Quick and Easy Poses for any Couple During a Photoshoot

Engagement sessions can feel intimidating and you might feel like your poses or photos are starting to look all the same. Or perhaps you’re having trouble getting a start at sessions? If that is the case, these poses will help you at your next engagement session and they work for all couples!

Easy-Poses-for-any-Couple-During-a-Photoshoot-1

The following poses work for all couples. Give them a try and add variety to your photo session.

T-Bone Pose

This pose works for any couple as it is in the shape of a “T.”  Place one person (the taller person) 45-degrees from the camera. Then place the other person’s shoulder into the armpit area of the taller person.

From here, the couple can hold hands, snuggle into the pose, look at each other, and even hug. Also, you can have the taller person, or the person standing at 45-degrees, kiss the person who is leaning into them on the forehead or cheek.

See the shape of the “T” as the woman leans into the man’s chest in this photo and they snuggle close.

You can use this same pose with a little distance between the two and have them hold hands. Doing the pose this way can make it feel more powerful and strong.

Standing with arms interlocked

Start by having both people stand facing the camera. Ask one person to wrap their arms around the other person’s with the hands around the tricep/bicep area. Once they are in that pose, you can have the person who is wrapped around also lean their head on the shoulder.

Here you can add variety by getting up close and photographing the rings. Have the leaning person look down at their hands and get detail photos of their face. Alternatively, get one from farther back and have the couple look at each other in this pose.

This particular pose also works if you photograph the couple from behind and ask them to touch noses, foreheads, or to kiss lightly.

One person in front and one person behind

This pose can offer many different photos since you can photograph it from different angles. Have one person standing slightly in front but off to the side of the other person.

Here they can stand holding hands, or you can even have one person facing backward and angled so that their back is to the camera but facing the other person. From here, you can ask them to look at each other. Have one person look at the camera, or have them get closer little by little while you capture their reactions.

Easy-Poses-for-any-Couple-During-a-Photoshoot-4

Have them face the camera and ask them to walk a bit with one person trailing behind. Do this a couple of times with them looking down, looking at each other, laughing or talking, or strolling. All of which will bring about authentic expressions while you’re photographing the pose.

Sitting down

Sitting down is another great pose for any couple. It can offer lots of different variations all within the same spot. You get different photos and won’t have to move your couple very much.

Easy-Poses-for-any-Couple-During-a-Photoshoot-5

A combination pose sitting down using the t-bone set up along with the arm wrapped around and the head leaning on the shoulder.

This pose works best if you have a staircase, ledge, or stool of some kind to offer different height options. However, don’t worry, it also works if they sit on a curb or the grass.

The key here is to have the couple sit comfortably as if they were sitting on their own during a date. From there, you can make adjustments to hand positions and where they are facing.

Have the couple sit next to each other at an angle. Or have one person leaning into the other in a sitting t-bone shape. You can even have one person sitting and the other standing.

Photograph them in this position from behind, side, and front. This will give you a lot of variety within the same pose. Have them snuggle, hold hands, caress or fix each other’s hair, kiss, close their eyes and go forehead to forehead, or touch noses. All of these are great variations of the same sitting down pose.

Using different focal lengths and apertures will give you a lot of different types of photos of the same moment.

Natural posing

When in doubt, natural posing may just be the best pose for all couples. It can be extremely useful at times during the session when it can seem like the poses are getting stale or repetitive.

Easy-Poses-for-any-Couple-During-a-Photoshoot-6

Natural posing is when you ask the couple to simply walk and enjoy the moment, or just sit and tell each other something they love about one another. You can also tell them to enjoy their surroundings or that you’ll be photographing them hanging out together as if you weren’t there.

This can bring about a lot of natural expressions, gestures, and relaxed poses from the couple that is much more authentic than any other pose you can put them in.

Usually, this works if you give them something to do like enjoying the moment or walking and exploring the location where they are. You can also tell them that you’re getting the settings right and just catch them being natural and relaxed.

This type of posing is really helpful at the beginning of sessions since most couples are nervous about having their photos taken. Getting them to relax while not having the pressure of looking at the camera or knowing how to pose can help them look natural.

Easy-Poses-for-any-Couple-During-a-Photoshoot-7

Also, use this when you feel like your poses are getting repetitive, or you feel like you’re out of ideas. Natural posing can also lead to natural cuddles that you can ask your couples to repeat and hold so that you can get the shot.

Natural posing can break up the session and make it more fun, especially if you’re at a location like a coffee shop, carnival, or doing an activity with the couple.

In conclusion

Using poses that work for all couples can a great solid foundation when you’re getting started in couple shoots.

Also, these poses work for all couples and therefore, can be helpful when you have run out of ideas or need something new to use at your next couples shoot.

Which pose will you try at your next couples session?

A Couple of Overviews of the New Nikon D3400

26 Jan

Last fall an update to the D3300 was released, the new Nikon D3400. I looked around and was able to find a couple of videos that go over the features and how it compares to the D3300, and also to the relatively new Canon T6.

The Nikon D3400 Review by Chris Winter

In this video photographer, Chris Winter goes over the features in the Nikon D3400 as compared to upgrades from the D3300, and some pros and cons. He mentions the new Nikon app Snapbridge as one of them, which allows you to receive photos to your smartphone directly from the camera without wifi.

Nikon D3400 versus the Canon T6

This next video compares the Nikon D3400 and the Canon T6 in several areas. See which one Chris rates on top:

  • Size and weight
  • LCD screens
  • Menus
  • Wireless integration
  • Video
  • Battery life
  • Burst mode
  • Autofocus

Couple Photography: Telling Their Love Story

18 Sep

228

A while ago, I went to the funeral for my husband’s dear Grandpa Wes, and I looked through old photos of him and his beautiful sweetheart, Daphene, who passed away just 6 months before (they couldn’t live without each other for very long). They had photos when they were young snuggled up together, holding hands, and even kissing, and it struck me how rare that was. Old photos usually are much more formal, and don’t show a lot of emotion or candid feelings. They also had more recent photos that showed the same affection, and that’s rare as well, to be married for decades and still have that connection. It made me realize even more how much I love what I do, and how much I especially love capturing those real moments, the ones that the grandkids will look back on later and say, wow, Grandpa and Grandma REALLY loved each other!

I’ve found some great ways to get couples to really connect for me, and hopefully these tips will help you capture a love story for every couple you photograph too.

196

Be Invisible

I tell couples many times during a session to pretend that I am not there. It usually works to bring their focus on each other, and some of the focus off of me. You want your subjects to act naturally towards each other, and interact how they normally would on a daily basis. You don’t want them to be so worried about you taking their photo, that they forget that they even love each other.

I like to tell them to look at each other, and say everything they feel about the other person with their eyes only. Some couples actually have deep, meaningful connections when I ask them to do this. Others laugh at the corniness, but it doesn’t matter. They are laughing with each other, and the connection is there. Either way, have your camera ready, and capture it.

Another good interaction builder is to ask them to whisper something in the other’s ear. I tell them that I do not want to know what they said to each other under any circumstances! This usually helps them to relax, and gives them permission to whisper all sorts of things to each other that will either ignite sparks, or laughter. It doesn’t matter, as long as they are pretending I’m not there, pretending the camera isn’t there, and making a connection.

187

Get Them Closer

Most of us have a distance comfort zone that we like to keep around ourselves. We don’t usually like people to be too close, especially when a photographer is watching us. Your job is to get them closer to each other. It may feel a little uncomfortable to them at first, but remind them that in a photo it doesn’t look as close as it feels, it just looks like they love each other.

173

You want to have a physical connection somewhere. Ask them to bring their foreheads or noses together (depending on height difference). Ask him to put his hand on her cheek, or on her back. She could put her hands on his chest, or on the back of his head. A good old fashioned kiss can work great too. A physical connection could be as simple as a hand hold, but just make sure they are connected. You don’t have to direct every hand placement, and pose them into uncomfortableness. Sometimes it’s enough just to ask them to hug lightly. Little cues go a long way – you want them to be natural with each other, and connect in a way that feels comfortable to them.

157

Give Them Something to Do

People that aren’t particularly comfortable with the camera can get even more uncomfortable if there isn’t anything for them to do. Couples sessions can be easier than a solo session in that regard, because at least they have someone to hold on to, but sometimes that isn’t enough to get them comfortable with the situation. If you just expect them to stand there and make beautiful images for you, you might be disappointed.

Tell them to take a walk together, or look at each other and laugh. Corny? Yes. Effective? Most of the time. Use vehicles to sit on, sit in, or lean on. Let him push her gently on a swing. Have them bring a puppy to interact with together, or a horse to hold onto, or a blanket to sit on. Even a wall or tree to lean on can help them feel a little more comfortable.

186

Faces Aren’t Mandatory

It’s great to get a few photos of the couple looking at you, although I still try to get them to have that physical connection with each other (cheeks together, but facing you; her head on his chest, both facing you, arms around each other, etc.). However, you can show even more connection sometimes without showing their faces at all. Intertwined fingers are a favorite thing of mine to photograph. A head on a shoulder, their backs as they walk away, or holding hands can show a lot too. Find those little details that can tell their love story in a subtle way.

195

Be Invisible – Again

You’ve already told them to pretend you aren’t there, but you can really remove yourself by peeking your camera through branches, leaves, or curtains. Not only does it kind of remove you and the camera from the sight of your subjects, but it gives you a great perspective for your photo. It lets the viewer feel like they are peeking into something that they shouldn’t be seeing, and makes the emotions feel even more genuine.

199

Who doesn’t like a good love story? If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a whole photo session with a loving couple is a romance novel. Your job as the photographer is to make it a good one.

Married couple sets Crossfit World Record at NorCal Regionals for Tamalpais CrossFit..

29 Nov

Very humble husband and wife team, Meshelle and Chad take setting a new record in a CrossFit regional workout in stride. Watch their full workout, and hear commentary from the coach Michael about the strategy for Meshelle, and Chad at they broke the CrossFit world record in team workout #3 on 5.19.2012 at Northern California Regionals. …To me, this is what CrossFit is about. Don’t be shy, all fitness levels are invited to their gym in San Rafael Ca. Give these great folks a holler, and check them out! Website- www.tamcrossfit.com Facebook- http Twitter- Tamalpais CrossFit (@tamCrossFit) A quick note, I opted to roll with the continuous workout shot for the full experience rather than edit. The result was a bit of unfortunate pans, and camera shakes as the whole thing was shot on a consumer tripod in the stands at full zoom, no image stabilization with people walking by. The thumps and bumps are often from the folks around me cheering! Definitely not a perfect shoot, but one I will always remember.. Well done guys! All music officially licensed through pond5. Shot and filmed on a canon t3i, kit lens, and Nikkor -qc 1:2.8 135mm using Fotodiox pro kikon-eos adapter. edited/corrected in Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 by www.RobertDBrown.com
Video Rating: 4 / 5

MadAppLauncher lets you set up groups of applications where you can launch one without using the mouse.

Looking for another way to group your Windows applications together and run them without having to navigate the “Start” menu?

If you’re tired of using the mouse, you may wish to consider MadAppLauncher, a freeware (GPL) application launcher. This application launcher can be run via a customizable hotkey, and programs may be placed into one of ten tabs. After adding program information to the launcher (right-click a virtual button and select “Edit”), just start the software by pressing the launcher hotkey, then a number to switch tabs, and then a letter / punctuation / function key to start the configured application. See the below screenshot for an example configuration….
