Zeiss’ 37MP Lightroom-capable, full-frame ZX1 camera is here — and it costs $6K

Zeiss has announced the release of its long-awaited ZX1 mirrorless camera in the United States and Germany.

First announced back in September 2018, the Zeiss ZX1 full-frame Android-powered camera is designed, in Zeiss’ own words, to help users ‘Shoot. Edit. Share.’ all on one device thanks to the integration of hardware and software.

At the core of the ZX1 is a 37.4-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor developed by Zeiss. In front of the sensor is a non-interchangeable Zeiss Distagon 35mm F2 T* lens with a focus and aperture ring (both of which appear to be electronically controlled). In addition to stills, the camera is capable of recording 4k (3,840 x 2,160 px) video at 30 frames per second (fps) and 1080p video at 60 fps in the H.264 codec. All images and video are stored on a 512GB internal SSD and can be transferred off the device using the USB-C port or the wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n/ac, 2.4/5.0 GHz and Bluetooth 4.2 LE).

Other specifications include a shutter speed range of 1/2000th to 30s, an ISO range of 80 to 51,200 (1/3 EV increments), Hybrid AF that uses both contrast and phase detection, and a 0.7” OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a 1920 x 1080px resolution. The camera uses a 3,190mAh 22.9Wh Li-ion battery, but Zeiss doesn’t mention how many shots the battery is rated for (likely because how much editing is done on-camera will greatly affect the battery life).

What makes the Zeiss ZX1 different than, say, the Leica Q2, is its massive 4.3” multitouch display on the rear that not only allows you to navigate the menu system, but also serves as a means of editing images directly on the camera with the Adobe Lightroom Mobile application. Zeiss said it’s worked alongside Adobe to ensure full compatibility and all buyers will receive a year’s worth of Adobe’s 1TB Photography Plan.

Despite clearly running on some version of Android, Zeiss no longer mentions the word ‘Android’ on any of its marketing material, so there’s no way of knowing what version it runs and what kind of support we can expect going forward.

Meike’s 25mm F1.8 manual lens for Nikon Z-mount costs only $75

It’s only been a few days since Meike introduced it’s 85mm F1.8 autofocus prime, but it’s already back with the announcement of another lens, a 25mm F1.8 manual focus prime for Nikon Z-mount cameras.

The lens is constructed of seven elements in five groups, has an aperture range of F1.8 through F16, features a minimum focusing distance of 25cm (9.8”) and uses a nine-blade aperture diaphragm.

The lens measures in at 61mm (2.4”) in diameter, 41mm (1.6”) long and weighs approximately 170g (6oz). Meike notes that the lens is entirely manual to the point that you’ll need to set your camera to release the shutter without a lens, as it won’t recognize a lens is attached.

Meike’s website makes mention of APS-C throughout the entire product page, but also shows the lens attached to the Nikon Z7 we have contacted Meike to confirm whether this lens is exclusively for APS-C or also full-frame

The lens is available now for just $ 75 on Meike’s website. It comes with the lens, front/rear caps, a carry pouch and a microfiber cleaning cloth.

Meike’s first autofocus lens is a new 85mm F1.8 prime that costs just $190

Budget optics manufacturer Meike has announced the release of an ultra-affordable 85mm F1.8 autofocus lens for Canon EF- and Nikon F-mount cameras that costs just $ 190.

The lens, which is the first autofocus lens Meike has produced, is constructed of nine elements in six groups, features an aperture range of F1.8-F22, has a minimum focusing distance of 85cm (33.5”) and uses a nine-blade aperture diaphragm. It also has a built-in microUSB port for updating firmware.

The lens measures in at 79mm long, 75mm diameter and weighs 420g (14.8oz). The 85mm F1.8 lens is currently listed as available on Meike’s online shop for just $ 190 (Canon EF, Nikon F). It comes with the lens, a lens hood, front/rear caps, and a microfiber pouch for transporting it in.

Meike’s new 50mm F1.2 lens for mirrorless (and EF) mounts costs just $350

Are you looking for fast glass on a budget? If so, Meike’s new 50mm F1.2 might satiate your needs without burning a hole in your wallet.

The ultra-fast lens will come in Canon EF, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony E mount when it ships mid-August. The lens is constructed of 12 elements in 7 groups, including an undisclosed number of multi-coated elements. It features an aperture range of F1.2-F22, has a minimum focusing distance of 60cm (24”) and uses a 67mm front filter thread.

The manual-focus lens measures in at 72mm (2.83”) long and weighs 620g (1.37lbs). For comparison, Canon’s RF 50mm F1.2 weighs 950g (2.09lbs). Below is a video overview of the lens from Arthur R:

The Meike 50mm F1.2 lens is currently available to pre-order for Canon EF, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony E mount camera systems for $ 350. The first units are expected to start shipping on August 15.

Blackmagic Design’s Pocket Cinema Camera 6K now costs $1,995 after permanent price drop

Blackmagic Design has announced it’s dropping the price of its Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (BMPCC6K) by $ 500, bringing the retail price down to $ 1,995.

Although Blackmagic Design doesn’t explicitly say the price drop is due to the current COVID-19 pandemic in the press release, it does suggest the decision was made alongside the release of its ATEM Mini switchers to help the current demand for at-home livestreaming efforts, saying ‘With the current demand for multi camera live streaming from home broadcast studios, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K makes a perfect studio camera when combined with the recent studio camera software update!’

The BMPCC6K offers 6K30p recording on its Super 35 sensor (6144 x 3456 pixels), up to 13 stops of dynamic range, built-in SD UHS-II and CFast card slots, HDMI output, an expandable USB-C port, a built-in 5” touchscreen and Blackmagic OS to run it all. All of that is packed inside the carbon fiber polycarbonate composite frame, which comes with a built-in Canon EF mount.

Fujifilm X-T200 is lighter, faster, offers 4K/30p and costs $800

Fujifilm has announced the X-T200, boasting a wide range of improvements over its X-T100 predecessor. The X-T200 uses a 24MP Bayer sensor like the T100 did, but uses copper rather than aluminum wiring, which provides 3.5x faster readout and had allowed Fujifilm to extend the high ISO by one stop, to 25600.

The X-T200 is an altogether lighter camera than the X-T100, weighing in at 370g / 0.8lb. Where the T100 offered very little in the way of a grip, the X-T200 provides a prominent, protruding grip for more comfortable hand-holding. The T200’s touchscreen is larger (3.5″ vs. 3″) and inherits a more touch-friendly menu from the X-A7.

Another welcome improvement is the ability to shoot un-cropped 4K video at 29.97 and 24p

Fujifilm promises autofocus improvements as well, including the latest eye detection algorithms. The X-T200 offers more phase-detect pixels (140k versus 16k), better PDAF coverage (across the whole sensor, rather than a central 25%) and more selectable autofocus points (425 vs. 91) than its predecessor. Burst shooting is improved to 8 fps (compared to 6 fps).

Another welcome improvement is the ability to shoot un-cropped 4K video at 29.97 and 24p, compared to the T100’s 4K/15p. Slow motion 1080/120p is also now an option, and a video setting has been added to the mode dial.

The Fujifilm X-T200 will ship in late February for $ 700 body-only or $ 800 with XC 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ kit lens.

Sigma’s 70mm F2.8 DG Macro Art lens costs $570, ships this month

Back in February, Sigma introduced the first Macro lens to join the company’s high-end line of “Art” series lenses: the Sigma 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO Art. And today, after keeping us in the dark for a few months, the company has finally revealed the lens’ pricing and availability.

According to Sigma, you’ll be able to pick up the new lens in Canon EF mount starting at the end of this month for a suggested retail price of $ 570. Additionally, the Sigma mount is expected to ship in June, and the Sony E-Mount version “will be announced later.”

As we mentioned above, this 70mm F2.8 is the first macro lens to join Sigma’s “Global Vision Art Line,” a lineup of lenses touted for its exceptional optical quality (usually at a very reasonable price). The new MACRO Art is said to deliver “stunning resolution and incredible clarity, while at the same time offering extremely smooth autofocus performance for a weightier, high-performance lens.”

In order to achieve this “extremely smooth” AF performance, Sigma has equipped the lens with an extending, floating, two-group focusing mechanism that the company says “minimizes aberration at all focal lengths,” whether you’re shooting at 1:10, 1:5, or the maximum magnification ratio of 1:1. Additionally, a new focus-by-wire system paired with a newly-developed “coreless DC motor” promises precise focusing—a must for macro shooters.

Sigma Announces Pricing & Availability for Its 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO Art Lens

Tamron launches 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony FE, costs $800

In February, Tamron announced development of a 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. We got our hands on a prototype at CP+, and spoke to Tamron about the lens in our CP+ interview, but we still didn’t have much in way of details about this exciting piece of Sony FE glass… until now.

Tamron officially launched the lens this morning, revealing full specs, release date, and pricing information for the first third-party standard zoom to be created natively for the Sony FE mount. Here’s a video introduction to the new zoom lens:

The lens was designed from the ground up for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, and engineers at Tamron focused on three main features: optical quality, portability, and silent autofocus. The lens weighs in at just 19.4oz (550g) and measures just 4.6in (11.6cm) long. And while the body was made of polycarbonate instead of metal (to save weight) the lens is still ‘moisture resistant’ so you can use it in inclement weather.

Optically, the lens is made up of 15 elements in 12 groups, including an XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element, a LD (Low Dispersion) element, a GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) element, and two hybrid aspherical elements that have been arranged “in the optimal arrangement to correct aberrations and reduce the overall lens size,” according to Tamron.

Finally, as the name suggests, the lens features Tamron’s new RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor. This new stepping motor offers quick, precise, and “exceedingly quiet” autofocus that Tamron claims “virtually eliminat[es] extraneous AF drive sounds during video recording.”

April 27, 2018, Commack, New York – Tamron announces the launch of the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036)- a high-speed standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. Product Highlights

1. Superb optical performance, including both outstanding image quality and beautiful background blur effects (bokeh), provided by fast F/2.8 aperture.

The Model A036 features a new design that leverages the advanced image quality of the latest full-frame mirrorless cameras. To balance beautiful bokeh with high image quality, the optical formula (15 elements in 12 groups) includes a special XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element, LD (Low Dispersion) element, GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) element and two hybrid aspherical lens elements in the optimal arrangement to correct aberrations and reduce the overall lens size. The lens also employs Tamron’s BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating that boasts exceptional anti-reflection performance throughout the entire zoom range, even when shooting in backlit conditions. In addition, incorporating the nine-blade circular diaphragm design, the lens will perform in versatile situation, providing beautiful soft portrayal at wide open aperture to a clear and sharp image when stopped down.

2. Comfortably lightweight (19.4 oz.) and compact (4.6 in).

Extra emphasis was placed on creating a high speed, fast aperture zoom lens in a compact and lightweight design because standard-range zooms are generally the most frequently used. Weighing only 19.4 oz. with a total length of just 4.6 in., the A036 enables photographers to enjoy the mobility provided by a compact, lightweight, full-frame mirrorless camera in all situations from casual snapshots to stunning portraits and dramatic landscape photography.

3. Minimum Object Distance of 7.5 in.; Working Distance 2.24 in.

The Model A036 breaks from the convention that the MOD of a zoom lens must be fixed throughout the focal range and achieves a MOD of 7.5 in. at the 28mm wide-angle end which delivers a maximum image magnification of 1:2.9. The working distance of just 2.24 in. from the front element allows photographers to enjoy close-up shooting that emphasizes the sense of perspective unique to wide angles. At the 75mm telephoto end, the 15.3 in. MOD provides an image magnification of 1:4, thereby enabling close-up shooting with a pleasantly blurred background similar to a macro lens.

4. All-new “RXD” stepping motor AF unit is excellently quiet and therefore perfect for video capture.

The AF drive incorporates a sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens and an RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor unit optimized for AF control. This achieves quick and precise AF operation, allowing users to maintain pin-sharp focus on continually moving subjects or when filming video. Additionally, the AF motor is exceedingly quiet, virtually eliminating extraneous AF drive sounds during video recording.

5. Consistent with Tamron’s exciting, ergonomically superb next-generation design.

The Model A036 features a mirrorless-oriented design that adheres to Tamron’s new “human touch” lens design concept. As signified by the Luminous Gold brand ring, careful attention to detail has produced an optimum shape reflecting the characteristic look of a Tamron-branded lens, whether on its own or attached to a camera body. This design emphasizes consistent brand identity combined with ease of operation.

6. Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating for weather protection.

Environmental seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops and afford Moisture-Resistant Construction. This feature provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Also, the front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance.

7. Compatible with main camera-specific features and functions.

Tokina Fi?RIN 20mm F2 FE AF lens will ship June 1st, costs $950

Tokina announced the Fi?RIN 20mm F2 FE AF—its second prime lens in the premium Fi?RIN lens lineup for mirrorless cameras—back in February, and we got to see it in person at CP+. But it was only this month that they revealed when the lens would ship, and only earlier today that we finally know the price.

According to Tokina itself, the autofocus lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras lens will begin shipping on June 1st; and according to online retailers who finally put the lens up for pre-order today, the price will be $ 950.

There’s not much more we can say about the lens that we didn’t already reveal in the announcement post and hands-on at CP+. The Fírin 20mm F2 FE AF is simply the autofocus version of Tokina’s first high-end Fírin lens. The two lenses share an optical formula, and the addition of AF is simply meant to offer “more options for end-users to choose from according to the purpose and style of shooting.”

GoPro unveils entry-level GoPro HERO action cam that costs just $199

It seems the rumors and leaks from earlier this week were spot on, and right on schedule (a day early, actually) GoPro has revealed its new, entry-level action camera: the $ 200 GoPro HERO.

The HERO is the cheapest action camera GoPro has ever announced, coming in at the same price tag as the HERO5 Session while boasting several features that are reserved for the company’s regular line (read: not the Session lineup) of action cams. If you’re keeping track, the HERO lineup of action cams now goes: GoPro HERO ($ 200), GoPro HERO5 ($ 300), and GoPro HERO6 ($ 400).

As GoPro SVP of Product, Meghan Laffey, explains, GoPro is hoping that the lower price-of-admission into the GoPro action cam family will entice first-time users who would otherwise pick up a third-party option or just keep using their phone. “HERO is a great first GoPro for people looking to share experiences beyond what a phone can capture,” says Laffey. “HERO makes it easy to share ‘wow’ moments at a price that’s perfect for first-time users.”

There’s not much to say about the GoPro HERO that wasn’t already revealed in Monday’s leak, but here goes. The main features are exactly what we expected.

The camera captures 1440/60p and 1080/60p video and 10MP stills, features a 2-inch display, voice control, electronic video stabilization, waterproof to 10M (30-feet) out of the box, and compatibility with all of the current GoPro HERO mounting accessories on the market (30+ from GoPro itself).

Finally, the camera also features compatibility with the GoPro and Quik Stories mobile apps, the latter of which can automatically edit your captured footage into ready-to-share highlight videos.
