Hasselblad’s new XH Converter 0.8 reduces focal length, increases aperture of HC/HCD lenses on X system cameras

Hasselblad has announced the XH Converter 0.8, a new Speedbooster-style adapter that makes it possible to use H system lenses on Hasselblad’s mirrorless X system while reducing the focal length by 0.8x and increasing the maximum aperture of the adapted lenses by two-thirds of a stop.

The XH Converter 0.8 works similarly to other focal length reduction adapters, such as Metabones’ popular Speedbooster line of adapters. Thanks to the extra flange distance going from a mirrored body to a mirrorless body, Hasselblad is able to pack not only the adapter components inside the unit, but also five optical elements in three groups. This differentiates the XH Converter 0.8 from Hasselblad’s previously-released XH Lens Adapter, which simply keeps the focal length and apertures the same across the board with adapted lenses.

Hasselblad has created a thorough chart showing what effective aperture and focal length compatible H system lenses would be when using them with this adapter on a Hasselblad X system camera:

Hasselblad has also shared a collection of sample images captured by photographer Tom Oldham on a 907X 50C using the XH Converter 0.8 with various lenses:

As tends to be the case with many adapters, not all lenses can use all of the features. The XH Converter 0.8 requires all HC/HCD lenses with firmware version 18.0.0 or later to be updated to firmware version 19.1.0 if you want autofocus compatibility, with the exception of the HC 120 and HC 120 II, which are limited to manual focus mode.

Likewise, any HC/HCD lenses that weren’t updated to firmware version 18.0.0 can’t be updated to firmware version 19.1.0 due to hardware limitations and will therefore be limited to manual focus. Hasselblad does not that since HCD lenses ‘were originally designed for a smaller format than HC lenses […] some reduction of performance in extreme corners can occur.’

Firmware version 19.1.0 for various lenses can be downloaded on Hasselblad’s website.

Hasselblad cameras must also be updated to the latest firmware, The X1D 50C must be updated to firmware version 1.25.0 or later, while the X1D II 50C, 907X 50C and 907X Special Edition models require firmware version 1.4.0 or later to work with the adapter.

The XH Converter 0.8 is made in Sweden and is available today for $ 950 on Hasselblad’s online store.

HASSELBLAD LAUNCHES XH CONVERTER 0,8 UNLOCKING A WHOLE NEW SET OF LENSES

The XH Converter 0,8 brings new opportunities to Hasselblad photographers with the ability to unlock a whole new set of H System lens capabilities. The XH Converter 0,8, used on HC/HCD lenses attached to an X System or 907X camera, reduces the focal length of the lens by a factor of 0,8x, which delivers a wider field of view and improves the maximum aperture of the lens by two-thirds of a stop. Additionally, the XH Converter 0,8 improves lens performance in terms of contrast and apparent sharpness across the entire frame.

An impressive combination for maximizing aperture is achieved when attaching the XH Converter 0,8 to the HC f/2,2 100mm lens, transforming the aperture and focal length to f/1,8 and 80mm, respectively. This creates an extremely large aperture that proves even faster than the XCD f/1,9 80mm lens, which until now has been the highest aperture lens option for X and 907X camera systems. An example of reducing focal length with the XH Converter 0,8 is when combined with the HCD f/4,8 24mm lens, it creates an aperture of f/3,8 with a 19mm focal length. This results in an even wider lens option than the existing XCD 21 lens, the widest lens in the X System.

The XH Converter 0,8 joins a range of Hasselblad adapters and converters, including the XH Lens Adapter which allows the usage of all 12 H System lenses as they are on X and 907X camera systems. The addition of the XH Converter 0,8 to the existing accessories lineup now provides these systems with enhanced functionality for H Lenses. In addition, H System users who decide to branch into the X or 907X systems gain more versatility from their current HC/HCD Lens options.

All H System lenses with firmware 18.0.0 or later must be updated to the newest version 19.1.0 to work with the XH Converter 0,8 and to get auto focus (HC 120 and HC 120 II can only be used in manual focus mode). Other H System lenses (except HC 120 and HC 120 II) with firmware older than 18.0.0 will work but only in manual focus mode. Please note that only HC/HCD lenses with firmware 18.0.0 or later can be updated to 19.1.0. Lenses with older firmware have older hardware and therefore cannot be updated. Additionally, the X1D-50c must be updated with firmware 1.25.0 or later and the X1D II 50C, 907X 50C and 907X Special Edition cameras must all be updated with firmware 1.4.0 or later.

Sigma updates firmware for multiple EF mount lenses, EF-E converter and one F mount lens

Sigma has released new firmware updates for a number of its Canon EF mount lenses as well as its Canon EF-E converter and a single Nikon F mount lens.

For the Canon EF mount lens included in the update, the firmware mainly addresses compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction feature to ensure corrections match the characteristics of each lens and errors don’t appear when the feature is enabled.

The firmware updates also improve functionality with select EF lenses when used on an EOS R camera with Canon’s EF-EOS R adapters. Below is a list of EF mount lenses that have firmware updates; a detailed list of the updated functionality of each lens can be found in the press release below:

Sigma has also updated the firmware for its MC-11 EF-E adapter to improve functionality and compatibility with the aforementioned Sigma EF lenses. Specifically, it improves the image stabilization functionality when used with the Sony a9 and a7 III when the in-camera image stabilization is set to ‘AUTO.’

Lastly, Sigma has updated the firmware for its 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens for Nikon F mount, improving the stability of the image in the viewfinder for more accurate compositions.

All of lenses can be updated with Sigma’s Optimization Pro tool alongside the Sigma USB Dock.

Sigma releases firmware updates for Canon EF and Nikon F lenses, MC-11 mount converter

Sigma has released multiple firmware updates for Nikon F-mount and Canon EF-mount interchangeable lenses. The new lens firmware updates bring a number of changes to a total of seven lenses, adding support for Canon’s Lens Aberration Correction function and multiple bug fixes, which were addressed in a recent compatibility notice.

The firmware update for Canon EF-mount brings the new Lens Aberration Correction function support for the following lenses:

  • SIGMA 24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 500mm F4 DG OS HSM | Sports
  • SIGMA 18-300 mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM | Contemporary

In addition, the update improves the AF speed for the 500mm lens when it is used with select camera models, and also adds compatibility with the EOS R’s ‘Scene Intelligent Auto Mode’ and automatic ‘1.6x (Crop)’ to the 18-300mm lens.

Sigma has also released a firmware update for Nikon F-Mount lenses that exclusively brings bug fixes. The software corrects problems that could impact video recording, AF, and overexposure involving the following lenses:

  • SIGMA 24-35mm F2 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art
  • SIGMA 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art

Joining the lens updates is a firmware release for Sigma Mount Converter MC-11 SA-E and EF-E. The update adds compatibility with the newest interchangeable lenses firmware updates.

Venus Optics has been making some very interesting lenses in the past couple of years. and at this year’s CP+ show the company is showing off an innovative ‘magic shift converter’, first announced last summer.

The magic shift converter fulfills two purposes. It acts as an adapter to allow a Canon or Nikon-mount Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero-D prime to be used on a full-frame Sony camera, but it also enables a shift movement, to correct for converging verticals.

Here’s a 12mm F2.8, coupled with the shift converter, with the movement fully shifted. In this position, a photographer would be able to mitigate the common problem of converging vertical lines in architectural and interior shots.

When used with the converter, the 12mm F2.8 becomes a 17mm equivalent, F4.

The mechanism can be rotated, allowing you to shift +/-10mm in both X and Y axes, without vignetting.

Unlike a simple mount adapter, the shift converter contains five glass elements arranged in four groups, including two extra low refraction elements. According to the manufacturer, using the adapter has a minimal effect on image quality, and the 12mm should retain its ‘zero distortion’ characteristics.

For around $ 300, the Magic Shift Converter is a relatively low-cost upgrade to the 12mm F2.8. zero-D wideangle prime. Despite its relatively low price, build quality is impressively high. What do you think?

Bookmark this HEIC to JPEG converter if you’re upgrading to iOS 11 tomorrow

iOS 11 will launch officially tomorrow—it’s been in beta for months—and one of the most relevant photo-centric features coming to Apple’s new mobile OS is the introduction of a high efficiency image file format (HEIF) called HEIC. This format should, in theory, make images smaller without sacrificing quality, in addition to a bunch of other useful features.

There’s just one problem: Windows users can’t natively view HEIC files on their computers. Enter JPEGmini creator Beamr and their new HEIC to JPEG converter.

Beamr says they created the Web tool in response to user feedback—ever since the new format was announced people have been asking for a way to convert HEIC to JPEG. Well, now they can by simply following this link and uploading up to 30 photos at a time. And since this is made by the same folks behind JPEGmini, HEIC images converted using the tool are then further optimized using the JPEGmini technology to spit out more manageable JPEGs.

We’re not sure for how long this tool will be needed. There are a lot of advantages to the HEIC format—the ability to store single images or sequences, the ability to store audio/text alongside the image, the ability to store image editing operations, and both lossy and lossless compression, to name a few—so it would make sense for the format to gain wide-spread integration quickly.

But until then, if you’re upgrading to iOS 11 tomorrow and need/want a way to convert those images to JPEGs, there’s on option waiting for you.

Adobe update brings Nikon D850 support to Camera RAW and DNG Converter

Adobe has released updates for its Camera Raw and DNG Converter modules, and the new versions bring support for the new Nikon D850 DSLR’s Raw files as well as a range of new Nikon lenses:

  • AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR
  • AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR
  • AF-S Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED
  • AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.4E ED

Additionally, the Camera Raw update fixes a few bugs, including a malfunction that resulted in a magenta color cast on some mRaw and sRaw images captured with the Canon EOS 6D Mark II.

Adobe’s Camera Raw 9.12.1 can be downloaded now. Lightroom users have to wait a little longer for D850 support, but Adobe says an equivalent update will be available soon. Until then, Lightroom users can (and should) use Adobe’s free DNG Converter for Mac or Windows to process their images.

The Laowa Magic Shift Converter brings easy lens-shifting to the Sony E-Mount

Venus Optics, the Chinese maker of the Laowa lens brand, has launched the Laowa Magic Shift Converter (MSC). The Magic Shift is designed to be used with Canon or Nikon mount lenses and Sony Full Frame E-mount cameras, and adds shift capabilities to your super-wide-angle lenses.

According to Laowa, the Magic Shift works specifically well with the company’s own Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D ultra-wide angle lens, which it converts into a 17mm f/4 Zero-D lens with a +/- 10mm shift capability.

Laowa says that, thanks to a patented internal optics system, there is no vignetting even at maximum shift and the impact on image quality is minimal as well. In addition, the MSC comes with a 360° rotation structure which allows photographers to shoot in both horizontal and portrait orientation.

Like conventional shift lenses, the Magic Shift Converter is aimed at architecture photographers, allowing them to compensate for converging parallels when shooting tall buildings or other structures with the lens angled upwards.

The Laowa Magic Shift Converter (MSC) Canon variant is currently available to pre-order on the Venus Optics website and at authorized resellers. Shipping is expected to start in late July/early Aug. The Nikon variant should be available two months later.

Sigma Mount Converter MC-11 experiences focus bug when used with Sony a9

Sigma has warned that the use of its Mount Converter MC-11 and certain Sigma zoom lenses with the Sony a9 may result in missed focus. According to a notice recently published by Sigma, the issue may arise ‘occasionally’ when using AF-S mode and while shooting ‘in the telephoto range.’

The phenomenon, according to Sigma, affects both the EF-E and SA-E versions of the MC-11. The company says it is investigating the issue and that it will publish an update ‘shortly,’ presumably with a software fix in the pipeline.

Sigma Mount Converter MC-11 adapts Sigma lenses to E-mount cameras, supports autofocus

Sigma has announced an adapter for Sony E-mount cameras, making it possible to use Sigma’s most recent lenses in Canon and Sigma mount on full-frame or APS-C E-mount bodies. The MC-11 adapter is able to use phase detection AF with adapted lenses, and makes use of both camera and lens stabilization when present. An LED display on the side of the mount provides compatibility information of attached lenses. The adapter also communicates EXIF data to the camera body, and retains profiles of compatible lenses – those included in Sigma’s Global Vision line – to optimize AF performance. 

Sigma has not announced pricing or availability at this time.

Adobe Camera Raw 8.8 and DNG Converter 8.8 now available

Adobe has released its Camera Raw 8.8 final release for Photoshop CC/CS6, the company has announced. Support for several additional Canon, Panasonic, and Fujifilm cameras have been added, as well as the Hasselblad Stellar II, Nikon D5500, and Olympus OM-D E-M5 II, among others. Read more
