Video: How to edit photos in Lightroom with a PlayStation controller

12 Aug

Industrious photographer Ben Stewart has demonstrated an excellent way to edit photos in Adobe Lightroom: using a PS3 or PS4 wireless controller. The process, which Stewart explains in the video above, enables Lightroom users to quickly scroll through photos, select tools, and make image adjustments without ever touching their keyboard or mouse.

It quite literally turns curating and editing large photo shoots into a game, and once you get the hang of it, the technique has the potential to seriously speed up your workflow.

Stewart recently demo’d editing an image using a PS3 controller, which had been mapped to various Lightroom shortcuts, and he walks others through the process of setting up their own wireless controller system n the video. His process involves two pieces of software for Windows PCs, SCPToolkit and JoyToKey, though macOS users will need to use an alternative mapping application such as Joystick Mapper. And if, for some reason, you’re not a big fan of PlayStation, you can use wireless controllers from other companies as well.

CamFi wireless camera controller now supports Sony digital cameras

28 Feb

Wireless camera controller CamFi now supports Sony digital cameras, the company announced recently. With CamFi 3.0, the latest version of the app, Sony camera owners can attach the CamFi wireless controller to their camera via a USB cable, then access and control the camera remotely using a laptop or tablet over Wi-Fi.

CamFi supports live view from Sony digital cameras, as well as Nikon and Canon cameras, and also enables photographers to change camera settings and capture shots using a laptop or tablet. The controller supports multi-camera setups, and also adds support for the latest DNP wireless printer server. The company says CamFi 3.0 also supports both Raw and JPEG image formats.

According to the CamFi Sony support page, the product presently supports the Sony a7R, a7R II, a7S, a7 II, a7, a6300, a6000, and a5100 models. Both MTP and PC Remote modes are supported; users can select their preferred mode in the camera’s ‘USB Connection’ menu. Check out the support page for full details on how to set up and use CamFi with Sony cameras.

Press release:

CamFi 3.0 Adds Wireless Tether Support for Sony Cameras

GUANGDONG, CHINA. – February 23, 2017 – CamFi Limited, maker of wireless controllers for digital cameras, announced today that the new version of its app, CamFi 3.0, adds wireless tether support for Sony cameras. This feature allows the photographer to transmit photos from a Sony camera to a laptop or tablet via Wi-Fi automatically during a photo shoot.

“CamFi is the only wireless camera controller which can support Canon, Nikon and Sony currently. The support for other camera brands will be added in the future,” Said Mark Ma, CEO of CamFi, “We hope we can bring something new for the photography industry.”

CamFi 3.0 supports both raw and jpeg image file formats. It also supports live view for Sony cameras. That way, a photographer can see the live view of the camera, change the ISO, shutter speed and aperture and shoot remotely. Furthermore, the new version added support for the newest DNP wireless printer server. This allows the user to print the photo via Wi-Fi immediately after shooting. CamFi supports multiple camera control, which can be used to create a bullet time effect.

There are many advantages to using wireless remote capture. For one thing, the technology enables the photographer to see the preview image on a large screen, such as that of a tablet, versus the small viewfinder of the camera. The tether also makes it possible for the camera to be in a position that gets the right shot, but which is not necessary comfortable or safe for the photographer. For instance, the camera can be mounted on a high railing while the photographer can see the preview while standing on the floor below. Wireless tethers are helpful for time-lapse photography and self-portraits as well.

Foolography and Triggertrap bring sensor-based triggering to the Unleashed camera controller

28 Sep

Foolography has announced a partnership with Triggertrap to bring new functionality to its tiny Unleashed Bluetooth camera controller that we covered at Photokina. The Unleashed works with many Canon and Nikon DSLRs and allows photographers to wirelessly control camera settings, such as aperture, shutter speed or ISO, and trigger the shutter or video using a smartphone app. You can also control multiple cameras, capture time-lapses and geotag your images.

Triggertrap is a wired solution that is also controlled via a smartphone app. It focuses on offering creative ways of triggering a camera, such as vibration, facial recognition or motion sensors among others. A future version of the Triggertrap app will now be compatible with the Unleashed hardware dongle, allowing for wireless triggering with the Triggertrap modes.

“We are often asked whether it’s possible to have a wireless version of Triggertrap Mobile,” says Mat Rodger, Managing Director of Triggertrap, “But so far, we have been focusing on our wired solutions. We are very excited to team up with the foolography team to deliver more options to our users, and to help foolography’s users trigger their cameras using our app.”

foolography partners with Triggertrap to bring sensor-based triggering to Unleashed

Berlin 26 September 2016 — Berlin-based foolography (foolography.com) today announced that it is partnering with London-based Triggertrap (Triggertrap.com) to add additional functionality to its popular Kickstarter-backed Unleashed product.

foolography’s Unleashed (http://kck.st/2c8lxlu) is primarily a camera remote app. It helps Canon and Nikon users take full control of their cameras from their phones. From their app users can change all the important settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc.) of their DSLR, take photos, start and stop video recording, control multiple cameras, take exposure-ramped-timelapses, geotag the images in-camera and preview thumbnails.

Triggertrap Mobile doesn’t offer as much control over the camera’s settings, but adds interesting and creative ways of triggering a camera to the mix, including sound, vibration, facial recognition, motion sensors, and much more.

Today, the two companies announced that Triggertrap will be including foolography’s Unleashed compatibility in a future version of the app. Instead of having to connect to the camera using the company’s Triggertrap Mobile Dongle, users will be able to use foolography Unleashed to trigger their cameras wirelessly based on a the triggering modes available in Triggertrap’s app.

“We have been huge fans of Triggertrap for a long time,” says Oliver Perialis, CEO at foolography, “and are very glad to announce this partnership. We always planned to open up our triggering API to other developers and couldn’t be happier that Triggertrap’s app is the first one out of the gates. This is just the beginning, and we hope developers will develop creative apps compatible with the Unleashed.”

Foolography’s Unleashed is a tiny Bluetooth DSLR controller

22 Sep

German company Foolography has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its latest product, the Unleashed smartphone DSLR remote control, and is showing a prototype device at its booth in Hall 4.1 at Photokina. The Unleashed is a tiny Bluetooth module that plugs into the USB and HDMI ports of your DSLR and allows you, via a dedicated app, to change camera settings, capture photos, record videos or create timelapses. You can also embed location information from the smartphone or an external GPS receiver in your images.

The Unleashed’s Bluetooth LE technology uses minimal power from the camera and does not require any charging. It automatically reconnects to the smartphone and, unlike Wi-Fi connected competitors, is always ready to be used. Its small dimensions mean that the camera hot shoe can be kept free and the Unleashed can stay on the camera at any time, even when in a bag or case.

On the downside, Bluetooth LE does not provide enough bandwidth for the transmission of a live view image. However, the Unleashed extracts low resolution thumbnails that allow for basic checks of exposure and composition. The Foolography Unleashed Kickstarter campaign has already reached its funding goal but you can still pledge $ 129 to secure a device. Shipping is planned for June 2017.

Elinchrom adds Sony compatibility to its high speed sync Skyport Plus HS wireless controller

11 Aug

Lighting manufacturer Elinchrom has introduced a version of its high speed sync Skyport remote flash trigger and controller that is compatible with Sony cameras. The new Skyport Plus HS transmitter allows Sony camera users to synchronize their shutter with Elinchrom flash heads using speeds of up to 1/8000sec. The system has been in use for some time for Canon and Nikon users, but now Elinchrom has added Sony to the list of camera brands with which the transmitter works.

Elinchrom’s high speed sync system is called Hi-Sync and varies from hotshoe style flash units in the way it produces light for short shutter speeds. While HSS modes in speedlights tend to use pulsing flash that gradually covers the camera sensor as the shutter slit passes by, Hi-Sync just uses a relatively long-duration burst. The company has introduced a system it calls OverDrive Sync that allows the user to calibrate the timing of the burst to the opening and closing of the individual camera’s shutter to ensure the two events coincide. This ODS system also allows a certain degree of exposure manipulation as photographers can tailor their shutter to different segments of the flash output curve.

The Skyport Plus HS 2.4GHz radio transmitter has a range of 200m/656ft when used without obstruction between the camera and the head, and 60m/196ft when used indoors. It system offers 20 channels for normal shooting and 20 more for high speed shooting, which can be arranged in 4 groups, and an AF illuminator to assist in low light conditions.

The Elinchrom Skyport Plus HS costs $ 249.95 USD / €249 EUR / £199 GBP.

For more information see the Elinchrom website.

Press release:

Elinchrom expands the family of EL-Skyport Plus HS transmitters to Sony users !

Since the launch of the Skyport Plus HS for Canon and Nikon, Sony users have been patiently awaiting their dedicated Transmitter. As promised, the most advanced Skyport ever is now available to Sony users. This will give them the ability to control and visualize power settings for all their compatible Elinchrom lights and the capability to shoot at speeds up to 1/8000s in Hi-Sync mode.

Visual Feedback Interface
The Large LCD display of the Skyport HS features two-way control via a visual feedback interface that lets you see the exact power up to 10 compatible Elinchrom lights in your setup right on the transmitter.

Users can control the modelling lamp and power of each flash unit directly from the Skyport transmitter, which instantly shows the updated settings.

This provides unsurpassed levels of “two-way communication and control” for every light in your setup, right from your camera.

Hi-Sync opens up the world of flash photography
Elinchrom Hi-Sync technology lets you go beyond the X-Sync of your camera. Photographers can simply switch to Hi-Sync mode and access sync speeds up to 1/8000s to freeze motion, overpower the sun, darken backgrounds or use a wider aperture. The ODS (Over Drive Sync) enables users to fine tune the Skyport Plus HS transmitter’s trigger signal to optimize exposure at high shutter speeds while gaining up to 2 more f-stops of light.

Even more
The Skyport HS has 20 frequency channels that can be used for either Normal or Speed mode. The transmitter attaches easily and securely to the hotshoe with its one-touch quick-lock mechanism, and is powered by 2x AA batteries. Users can also enjoy a range of up to 656ft (200m) outdoors, and up to 196ft (60m) indoors.

The Skyport HS continues the Elinchrom commitment to quality
Providing photographers with tools to enhance their shooting experience whilst also showing how Elinchrom is looking firmly ahead to the future. The Skyport HS represents a seamless extension of the EL-Skyport family since it is also compatible with the three previous generations of Elinchrom flash units (those using the EL-Skyport Transceiver RX module for Style RX, Digital RX, and Ranger RX systems, and those with integrated EL-Skyport modules for the BRX, D-Lite RX, ELC Pro HD, and ELB series.)

Other camera systems are currently being evaluated for future release.

CamFi DSLR controller now offers real-time upload to Dropbox

06 Aug

The makers of the CamFi wireless DSLR controller have launched a new version of their iOS app. It now allows the user to transfer photos to Dropbox in real-time while shooting. The new feature is aimed at photojournalists who want to send images to news desks as quickly as possible but can arguably be useful in other scenarios as well.

To make the system work, photographers need a so-called MiFi, a portable broadband device that allows multiple mobile devices to share a 3G or 4G mobile broadband Internet connection, or a second phone that is acting as a mobile hot-spot. Both the CamFi that is attached to the DSLR via a USB-cable and the phone that is running the CamFi app are then connected to the MiFi. This way, the CamFi can be controlled via the app and access the Internet at the same time.

As images are captured they are sent from the CamFi to the control phone via Wi-Fi and uploaded from the phone to Dropbox via the MiFi’s internet connection. This works for both Raw and JPEG files. The same system can be setup when controlling CamFi from a Windows PC. The developers say Mac and Android versions will be released very soon.

CASE Remote Air is the world’s smallest smart camera controller

20 Jul

CheeringTech, the maker of the CASE smartphone remote for DSLRs, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a lighter and smaller next-generation version, the CASE Remote Air.

CheerinTech says at 2.4″ x 1.6″ x 0.2″ the CASE Remote Air is the world’s smallest smart camera controller. At only 50 grams it is also very lightweight. Like similar devices, it connects to the USB-port of your DSLR and creates a Wi-Fi hotspot that allows for a wireless connection to your smartphone or PC. Using a dedicated app you can then see the camera’s live view image on the display of your smartphone, alter camera parameters, control video shooting or use one of the special modes, such as focus-stacking or time-lapse. In addition, you can download images from the camera to your device, including Raw files.

CASE Remote Air works with many Canon and Nikon DSLRs and can be controlled from Android and iOS mobile devices or PC and Apple computers. You can currently reserve a CASE Remote Air for $ 79 plus shipping. Delivery is expected for October. More information, including a full list of compatible cameras, can be found on the Indiegogo crowdfunding site.
