how to use the Canon Camera Connect app in 2021

In this article, I’m going to share everything you need to know about using the Canon Camera Connect app, including:

  • How to connect your camera to the app
  • The ins and outs of the app interface
  • What the app can do for you as a photographer

So if you’re struggling to get your camera connected to the app, or you simply want to know how you can use the app to revolutionize your photography, then you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s jump right in.

Step 1: Check for compatibility and download the app

Canon Camera Connect is a free app available for download on Android and iOS devices. To get started, head to the Play Store or the App Store and hit Install.

The app is compatible with a broad range of Canon digital cameras, including:

  • Over a dozen Canon PowerShot models
  • Plenty of Canon DSLRs, including the 5D Mark IV, the 6D Mark II, and the Rebel SL3
  • Canon’s mirrorless lineup, including the EOS RP, the EOS R, the EOS R5, and the EOS R6

If you’re not sure whether your camera is compatible with the Canon Camera Connect app, you can check the full compatibility specs here, though bear in mind that the compatibility list hasn’t been updated to include Canon’s latest camera models. Alternatively, you can download the app and search for your camera:

selecting your camera

Step 2: Connect your camera to the app

The specifics of this step will vary depending on your camera model. Fortunately, the Canon Camera Connect app offers startup instructions that take into account these variations.

In the app, select Easy Connection Guide:

activating the Easy Connection Guide

Then hit Connect another camera/camcorder:

picking your camera in the Canon Camera Connect app

Next, search for your camera model:

searching for your camera model

Depending on your camera’s capabilities, you may have the option to connect via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or NFC. Canon recommends Bluetooth for the best connection, but any of the three options should work.

selecting your connection method

Finally, head through the setup instructions.

By the time you’ve finished, your camera should be paired with the app and ready to go.

follow the instructions to connect your camera

Step 3: Explore the interface of the Canon Camera Connect App

After you have successfully connected your phone to your camera, head back to the app home page. The menu is minimal and pretty straightforward.

the Canon Camera Connect app interface

While the app offers several functions – including the ability to automatically download photos from your camera to your phone – you’ll generally stick to the top two options:

  • Images on camera
  • Remote live view shooting

Let’s take a look at each of these items in turn:

Images on camera

viewing images on your camera via the app

Selecting Images on camera will show you a gallery of all the images on your connected camera (i.e., on the camera’s memory card), sorted by the date they were taken.

images on the camera

To open an image, simply tap it with your finger. You’ll see it displayed large.

viewing a camera image

At the bottom of the screen, you’ll find several useful options, including Info (which lets you view camera settings for the file), Rating (which lets you give your file a rating between one and five stars), Import (which lets you download the file to your phone), and Delete (in case you want to erase the image from your camera on the spot).

Remote live view shooting

selecting the remote live view shooting option

Selecting Remote live view shooting will give you a live camera feed on your phone. Hit the big circle at the bottom of the screen to fire the camera shutter.

viewing a live view feed

You can make adjustments to settings, too; for instance, from your phone, you can change the point of focus, the shutter speed, the aperture, the ISO, the white balance, the AF area mode, and more.

When to use the app for amazing results

Now that you’re familiar with the Canon Camera Connect app basics, let’s discuss some common situations where the app can help your photography, starting with:

1. Photographing landscapes without a dedicated remote trigger

When shooting landscapes, it’s best to avoid using the shutter button to take photos. After all, most landscape photography occurs at slow shutter speeds, where the action of pressing the shutter button can introduce unwanted blur.

So what do you do?

Well, most landscape shooters rely on one of two options: They either carry a remote trigger, or they use the camera self-timer.

Unfortunately, both these methods come with significant drawbacks. It’s easy to forget a remote trigger at home, plus it requires batteries of its own, and it introduces yet another element of uncertainty into a camera setup. And the camera self-timer fails when you’re trying to photograph moving objects, such as a wave coming in on the beach; thanks to the delay, you rarely end up with the result you envision.

Enter the Canon Camera Connect app, which lets you fire your camera remotely, straight from your phone. You don’t need to carry anything extra (except for a smartphone, of course, but these days, who doesn’t?). And you don’t have to worry about self-timer delays.

2. Photographing from odd angles

If you’re the type of photographer who shoots from down low, up high, or any other uncomfortable positions, you’re going to love the Camera Connect app.

Simply turn on the remote live view shooting option, then position your camera without hurting your neck or scraping your elbows.

Preview the composition and exposure through your smartphone feed, then take your photo.

3. Doing street photography from the hip

In street photography, the goal often is to shoot without being noticed by your subject.

This has led street photographers to develop various techniques for shooting inconspicuously, including shooting from the hip, which involves blindly firing your camera without looking through the viewfinder.

Unfortunately, shooting from the hip, while discreet, results in very few keepers – unless you preview images through the Camera Connect app first.

In other words:

Set up your shots the way you normally would, with your camera held below eye level. But hold your phone in one hand and surreptitiously check the remote feed for framing information. That way, you can ensure your compositions look good before firing the shutter button, and your keeper rate will immediately skyrocket.

Make sense?

4. Product photography from a distance

If you like to shoot products (or any still life subjects, really) with studio lighting, you probably spend a lot of time walking to your lights, then back to your camera, then back to the lights, and back to your camera, and so on.

It may not seem like a lot, and if you’re just starting out, it probably isn’t. But over time, moving back and forth between camera and lights can become frustrating, and you’ll wish you had some way to simplify the process – such as the Canon Camera Connect app.

With the app, you can preview images and fire off test shots while standing next to your lights, then simply reach over and make adjustments to your light settings without needing to journey to your camera and back.

How to use the Canon Camera Connect app: final words

Well, there you have it:

How (and why) to use the Canon Camera Connect app. Hopefully, you can now confidently connect your camera to the app – and use it to improve your photography workflow!

Atomos launches Connect, a $79 capture card

29 Sep

Atomos has launched a HDMI-to-USB video capture card that allows any HDMI camera or recorder to be used to live stream or record to a PC or Mac. Connect is a tiny device that plugs directly into a USB port and accepts HDMI input to provide a video feed of up to 1080p at 60fps in up to 12-bit color.

The device can accept 4K at 30p, and needs no additional drivers, software or power supply to work. And best of all, it costs $ 79. Unlike most capture cards, the Connect doesn’t use a USB out cable, so the full weight of the HDMI cable will be borne by the USB port on your computer, making this perhaps a solution when a short cable is in use or when the cable can be supported.

Atomos is promoting Connect to use with its range of video recorders, but it can also work directly with any camera, or device, that can output via HDMI. The company points out though that when used with the Shogun7 users can switch between up to four simultaneously streaming cameras using the Shogun’s multiple-camera recording capabilities.

The Atomos Connect is available now. For more information see the Atomos website.

Press release:

Atomos launch Connect: Professional HDMI to USB conversion for streaming.

Melbourne, Australia – 28th September 2020 – Atomos is today excited to launch Connect, a convenient, reliable, and affordable bridge between professional 4K video capture and high frame rate UVC streaming over USB (up to 1080p60). Connect works with any HDMI device including the entire Atomos range. Simple to use, it has universal support from popular streaming platforms and at only $ 79USD is an affordable way for gamers, vloggers and education facilities to up their streaming game using the professional Atomos monitor-recorder ecosystem.

Convert, Connect, Stream
Connect bridges the Atomos world of professional recording and monitoring with popular streaming platforms such as YouTube, Twitch and OBS. Use your Atomos device for professional shot setup and recording and use Connect to simply convert the HDMI output to USB on the go for streaming on your Mac or PC. Connect accepts up to 4Kp30 video and is capable of up to 1080p60 output over USB – incredible streaming quality for the US$ 79 price point.

Plug and go like a pro
With a slim 0.5-inch profile, Connect is sleek enough to sit directly off your laptop or computer. No drivers are required and no power supply either, meaning it really is a simple matter of connecting your Atomos or HDMI device to your Mac or PC to start producing like a pro.

Shogun7 Connect – tame multicamera streaming
The Atomos Shogun7 allows you to monitor and record up to four 1080p60 streams simultaneously and then cue and switch in real-time with a simple touch of the screen. Additionally, the Shogun7 is able to accept asynchronous feeds (sources don’t need to be locked), allowing the user to use more affordable cameras for multi camera production. Adding in Connect, lets you output the switched feed for live streaming on your Mac or PC. This makes the Shogun7 Connect package one of the easiest and most affordable options for professional switching.

Transforms your Camera to a Pro Webcam
Even without an Atomos monitor-recorder, Connect transforms your HDMI camera to a powerful professional webcam. No drivers required, plug in Connect and go live instantly.

The Atomos Connect is available immediately for $ 79/€79 from the global authorised Atomos dealer network.

Fujifilm donates Instax cameras, film to hospitals in Europe to help staff connect with patients amid COVID-19

05 Jun

Fujifilm UK has announced it’s donated Instax instant cameras to 31 National Health Service (NHS) hospitals across the United Kingdom and 19 other hospitals across seven other countries to help hospital staff ‘share a smile’ with patients while still wearing their personal protective equipment (PPE).

With doctors, nurses and other hospital staff having to wear an extraordinary amount of PPE due to the COVID-19 pandemic, patients within the hospital are unable to have the more face-to-face interaction they’re more familiar with in less-chaotic times.

Left to right: [1-2] Healthcare workers at Florence Nightingale Group Hospitals, Turkey and [3] Azienda Socio-Sanitaria Territoriale (ASST) di Vimercate, Monza, Italy

‘Those working on the frontline in hospitals must put on gloves, gown, face mask, visor or air hoods before entering a hospital unit or caring for a patient – creating a full suit covering almost every feature,’ says Fujifilm in its press release announcing the initiative. It goes on to say:

‘This can make it difficult to reassure a patient, who cannot see a smile or a friendly face. PPE removes an important element of the personal connection that is usually so important between a clinician and patient. It can also heighten an already worrying and intimidating situation and make patients in ICU wards feel even more isolated.’

So, in its search to figure out how it can help NHS staff and patients alike throughout the COVId-19 pandemic, Fujifilm found a clever way to keep interactions a little more personal and friendly than otherwise possible while wrapped up in PPE. Through its donated Instax cameras, the staff is able to snap a photo of themselves and attach it to their gowns.

Fujifilm says roughly 120 Instax cameras and 7,500 Instax prints have been sent to hospitals in the U.K., Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Russia, France and Denmark, with more expected to be shipped out to interested parties.

In addition to helping patients feel more connected with their caretakers, Fujifilm says it also has the added benefit of making inter-team communication easier and boosting morale, as it can be difficult to see who’s underneath all the PPE, especially considering hospitals have staff moving more frequently between floors and departments.

Fujifilm encourages any health teams interested in receiving a special Instax kit to contact them via email at comms_uk@fujifilm.com.

Profoto adds Android support to its B10, B10 Plus strobes via Profoto Connect app

31 Jan

Profoto has announced it’s added Android compatibility for its B10 and B10 Plus strobes via its Profoto Control Android app.

Until now, only iOS users were able to control their B10 and B10 Plus strobes on their mobile devices. Now, Android users can control nearly every setting available on the strobes and even perform wireless firmware updates.

The Profoto Control Android app is free to download in the Google Play Store and works with smartphones running Android 7 or later.

Now for Android – Profoto B10 & B10 Plus

Profoto announces Android compatibility for B10 & B10 Plus’s control, offering seamless smartphone connectivity to more photographers.

In September 2018, Profoto launched the B10, a powerful battery-powered flash in a compact size. Shortly afterward in 2019, Profoto released the ever so slightly bigger brother the B10 Plus. Since then, the B10 series has been the preferred light for on-location photographers globally.

At the time, iPhone users could enjoy the freedom to control light by a simple swipe on their smartphone screen. Today, Profoto also offers that freedom to Android users through the Profoto Control Android app available on Google Play Store.

The Profoto B10 series are seriously small with the Profoto B10 similar in size to a medium camera lens and the B10 Plus around the size of a large camera lens. That said, both lights punch significantly above their weight with the Profoto B10 delivering five times the power of a speedlight and the B10 Plus providing twice that amount; light that’s natural and beautiful with a soft, gentle fall-off.

Trigger and control them wirelessly with ease from any Profoto Air remote, from Profoto Connect, or the Profoto A1 or A1X. You can point and shoot with TTL or switch to manual control at any time.

With the B10 & B10 Plus connected to the Profoto Control Android app, you can easily view and control all B10 and B10 Plus settings from the palm of your hand and install new updates in seconds.

Wherever your shoot takes you, Profoto B10 series provides you the power to create with seamless smartphone connectivity – now available for all Android and iPhone users.

Canon announces Image Connect, a new photographer matching service for the U.S.

09 Jan

In addition to its Robotic Camera System CR-S700R and Photo Culling plugin for Adobe Lightroom Classic, Canon has also announced it will be launching a new photographer matching service in the United States.

The service, called Image Connect, will use Canon’s RAISE photo community platform to connect customers with professional photographers. The process will go as follows, according to Canon:

  • Through the platform, customers can provide basic details for the job, such as event type, location, and date
  • Once photographers are matched with the customer through the platform, customers review photographer profiles and invite those they like to bid on the job
  • Photographers create an offer which allows them to set their own price (rather than adhering to standardized pricing) and allows them to communicate their rates and value to customers
  • Once an offer is accepted, the job is booked through the platform
  • Following the event, images are delivered electronically to the customers through a Canon customer portal

The service will be brand agnostic, so even if you’re not a Canon shooter, you’ll still be able to use the service. The service is expected to go live in a limited number of markets starting in Q1 2020. At the time of launch, the service will be limited to residents of the following states: Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.

There’s no word yet on whether Image Connect will be available outside the United States. We have contact Canon for clarification and will update this article accordingly when we hear back.

Tether Tools Air Direct is a new and improved way to wirelessly connect your camera to your computer, mobile device

25 Oct

Tether Tools has introduced a new device that enables users to create a wireless connection between their camera and theirfavoritee tethering software, and which avoids the use of hot folders and middleman applications for camera controls.

The new Air Direct allows a much wider range of camera models and brands to be used than the company’s current Air Case, and enables tethering software applications to operate as if the camera were connected with a cable.

The idea is that those using software applications such as Capture One Pro can use the software’s tethering functions as normal, with the system sending live previews to the software and the software controlling the camera’s operation. While the Tether Tools Air Case was a Nikon/Canon-only device, the new Air Direct will work with Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony cameras as well — so long as they are compatible with the software in use. Canon and Nikon owners will also be able to tether via smartphones and tablets using the existing Air Remote App.

The new device uses twin antennas to send and receive data to and from the camera via 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11AC Wi-Fi networks, which Tether Tools claims, along with a USB-C cable, allows a transfer connection 5x faster than before. Air Direct has a range of 200ft/60m and can send both Raw and JPEG files to PC and Mac computers simultaneously. Battery or DC powered, the Air Direct doesn’t drain camera power and can be run using an external battery pack via the USB-C connection.

The Tether Tools Air Direct will cost £358.80/$ 329.99. For more information see the Tether Tools website.

The Profoto Connect is a button-free wireless trigger that connects to your iPhone

28 Mar

Meet the Profoto Connect, a minimal button-free remote trigger that packs an unusual amount of power into a uniquely compact package.

The Profoto Connect has just three onboard settings that are controlled with a twist of the puck-shaped device: auto, manual and off.

Auto is effectively a TTL flash photography mode that will automatically detect the correct flash exposure needed for the scene when the shutter is pressed. For times when you need a little more control over the scene, simply turn the dial to manual and pair the Profoto Connect to Profoto’s iOS app via Bluetooth. Once connected, all of the settings can be entirely changed directly from the screen of your smartphone or tablet.

The device works with any Profoto AirTTL flash over the 2.4GHz frequency. It has an operational range between 330ft to 1000ft, features eight channels, has a 30-hour battery life and can be recharged via the onboard microUSB port.

How and Why to Use the Canon Camera Connect Application

11 Jun

If you own a Canon camera, chances are it comes with a built-in WIFI connection. This wireless connection can be a real game changer when it comes to photographing and sharing your photographs instantly. This versatility can really up your game during sessions and create more buzz when you share your photos after a session with the use of the Canon Camera Connect application.

In this article, I was using a Samsung Galaxy Prime smartphone and Canon EOS 6D camera with a Canon EF USM 85 mm f/1.4 lens.

What is the Canon Camera Connect application?

Canon Camera Connect is an application that you can download from the app store on your smartphone. It is used to wirelessly connect your DSLR to your phone so that you can photograph remotely, view images on the camera that you’ve already taken, and edit those images as well.

If your camera has built-in Bluetooth, it can also function by connecting your camera to your smartphone via that method as well.

Canon Camera Connect Application

This is what the Canon Camera Connect application icon looks like in the Google Play Store on Android.

How to use the application

There are a couple of ways you can connect your camera and smartphone in order to use the application. The first is connecting via an existing internet connection and using the information for user ID and password on both devices and then opening the application. The biggest drawback with the application, however, is that when the internet is faulty or patchy, your devices can disconnect and not allow you to use the app.

The second is the best option, in my opinion, because it connects to the camera directly and unless you are out of range or your phone goes to “sleep” you are always connected. Setting up the connection is easy. Go to menu on your camera, where you see the option to “Enable” the wifi connection, below, you’ll see the options for connecting.

Canon Camera Connect Application

In the Menu, go to the wifi settings to set the SSID that you will use to connect to your smartphone.

Choose to “connect smartphone”.  Within that menu, you are going to be able to set up your connection with a personalized name. I chose to name mine SET1 with the SSID which is the name of the wifi as “jl”. The encryption key is the password you’ll have to enter when you connect your phone to the camera’s wifi connection.

Canon Camera Connect Application

Choose Connect Smartphone to choose the settings to connect directly to your smartphone.

SET1 is the name I gave it in my camera’s menu. If you go into change/review settings you can set and change the name of the wifi that your smartphone will connect to.

Once you have the settings configured and enabled to connect, on your smartphone, go to the wifi networks and choose the one that you have named for your camera. Enter the encryption key and you will be connected. The application also has an easy to follow connection guide that can help you in case you forget the steps.

Canon Camera Connect Application

Here, using Easy Connection will help you to set the name and see the encryption key that you will need for your smartphone to connect to the camera’s wifi.

Canon Camera Connect Application

Here, you can see that the wifi network my camera has available so that my smartphone can connect. On the right, you see the main menu of the application.

You can add more Sets/Connections and can name them inside of your camera’s Wifi settings menu. This can save time if you use different devices with the application and camera.

View images and share instantly

In the Canon Camera Connect application, you have the option to view the images from camera instantly.

There is nothing more exciting than connecting your camera to the application after a session, transferring the images you believe to be great, and sharing them instantly onto social media. Clients love to see to see “sneak previews” of their session! This will also cause more excitement to see the final photographs.

Canon Camera Connect Application

Once you’re connected, you can view the images that are on your camera from your smartphone.

Connect your camera to the application, choose VIEW IMAGES, and select the ones you’d like to download. You can choose to resize or to leave them in original size. You can also edit the images in the application. They can be sorted by date in descending or ascending order which can make finding specific images faster.

Remote Live View mode

The other option that you have from the Camera Connect application home screen is to use the Live View Shooting mode. This feature is extremely helpful during sessions where you have your camera on a tripod and need to move around your subject, which could be a person or still life.

Canon Camera Connect Application

Here you can see the remote live view shooting mode. In the center photo, you can see that you can change your settings while photographing your subject. On the right, it’s the photograph that I just took.

From the live view shooting mode, you can see what you’re photographing, and change settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. The live view mode feature is fantastic because you don’t have to be stuck behind your camera or go back and forth between the subject and the camera.

Moving around your set, making adjustments to the set and to the camera, and “seeing” your photograph before even hitting the shutter can save you time. You can make sure you have everything just right before triggering the remote, all from your smartphone.

Using multiple devices

The Canon Camera Connect application can be set up on various devices as long as you download it, which is free in the app store on both Android and iPhone. Download the application and set up your camera to connect directly to the device you are going to be using.

Being able to use the application on multiple devices allows for more versatility when you’re photographing in different locations. All without having to use cords or tethering your camera to one specific device.

Canon Camera Connect Application

Choose Connect Smartphone to choose the settings to connect directly to your smartphone. You can also choose to connect to multiple devices.

Drawbacks

While the Canon Camera Connect application is very useful and functional, like all applications, it has certain drawbacks. The major drawback in using Camera Connect, and it’s not so much the application but the camera, is the wireless connection can drain the camera battery. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t matter if it is via an internet connection or directly to your smartphone, the battery life is cut significantly. Make sure you carry more than one camera battery if you attempt to use the application on location.

If you are connected directly to the camera’s own “wifi” you won’t be able to use any other wireless internet. However, connecting directly to the camera does secure the connection and you won’t be disconnected due to a patchy network. Just be mindful to not distance yourself too much or the application will disconnect since you won’t be in range of the camera.

Lastly, if your phone or camera go to sleep, then it disconnects the wifi connection automatically and you have to go through the entire process of choosing the camera’s wifi and connect again. It can become tedious, so my suggestion is that you set both your phone and your camera to not to to “sleep”  so that you don’t encounter this issue.

Conclusion

In the end, the Canon Camera Connect App is highly recommended for both remote live shooting and for downloading your photographs instantly so that you can share them with clients or on social media. The pros out weigh the cons. T

his application can truly give you more options when you are photographing both on location and in a studio. Download the application and test drive it, it will not disappoint.
