Following initial reports, Fujifilm confirms ‘small percentage’ of X-Pro3 units have an EVF defect

DPReview reader and Fujifilm X-Pro 3 owner Etienne Waldron shared the above photo in an attempt to demonstrate the brightness issue with the EVF display inside his unit.

Following concerns shared in the DPReview forums and on Fuji X Forums, Fujifilm has confirmed to DPReview that a ‘very small percentage’ of its X-Pro3 cameras are experiencing an issue that impacts the electronic viewfinder. As reported by impacted camera owners, including DPReview reader Etienne Waldron, who kindly shared the photos in this article with us, this issue causes the display in the EVF to appear substantially overexposed, though the problem doesn’t impact the model’s LCD.

The brightness issue doesn’t just affect the image either—reports note it’s apparent throughout the menu as well.

The exact cause of this issue is unclear at this time, and Fujifilm’s below statement doesn’t divulge what exactly is going on, but it appears to be a hardware defect rather than a software problem. Fuji is merely advising impacted customers to get in contact with its customer service for help, with a Fujifilm spokesperson telling DPReview the following in a statement via email:

‘Our customers are always our number one priority. We take feedback to heart and always strive to provide the highest possible quality in our products. We are aware of the phenomenon affecting the viewfinder in a very small percentage of X-Pro3 units. We advise our customers to contact Fujifilm customer service directly to solve any questions or concerns they may have about the camera.‘

Note the difference between the flip-down LCD and the EVF.

This issue is particularly frustrating for users in light of the camera’s EVF-centric design. The model features a hidden flip-down LCD that limits the ways in which the camera can be used in the absence of the viewfinder. Because the defect is causing a very overexposed image, the EVF is essentially unusable for impacted camera owners. Unfortunately, replacing the faulty camera is the only known solution to the problem at this time.

Canon Europe confirms its focus is on RF, not EF lenses unless the ‘market demand[s] it’

Although Canon’s flagship 1DX Mark III DSLR is still on the horizon, it seems as though Canon has stopped research and development efforts for new EF lenses.

In an interview with Digital Camera World, Canon Europe pro product marketing senior manager, Richard Shepherd, said that while Canon will continue to support EF lenses, the plan is to focus on RF lenses, unless the ‘market demand[s] it.’ Below is the full quote, shared by Digital Camera World:

‘As you know, last year we launched the RF mount and EOS R system […] To date we’ve launched ten critically acclaimed lenses, and as it’s a new system we plan to continue this, launching more RF lenses while still fully supporting the EF lens system. And of course, should the market demand it, we are ready to create new EF lenses. But for now, our focus is on RF.’

While this is the first time we’ve seen detailed confirmation about Canon ceasing development of new EF lenses, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. Canon’s EF mount was released 33 years ago when it replaced the FD mount in 1987. Since then, we’ve seen the rise of digital cameras, the fall of point-and-shoot cameras and now the rise of mirrorless cameras. Canon’s RF system is clearly the future for the company and as such it makes sense Canon would be more interested in investing its capital looking forward rather than behind.

As of October 12, 2017, Canon said it had surpassed production of more than 130 million EF-series interchangeable lenses—just shy of four million per year since the mount’s inception. The number has inevitably gone up by millions since and you can count on it continuing to rise for many years to come, even long after production has stopped.

Apple confirms its new Mac Pro, Pro Display XDR monitor will be available to order tomorrow

Apple has announced it’s opening up pre-orders for its new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR monitor tomorrow, December 10.

It’s been six months since Apple first showed off the redesigned Mac Pro and accompanying Pro Display XDR monitor at WWDC. At that time, no definitive timeframe was given for its release, aside from vague hints it’d arrive autumn 2019.

The new emails sent out to customers confirmed the devices will be ‘Available to order December 10’ with an included ‘Save the date’ calendar reminder.

The Mac Pro starts at $ 5,999 and the Pro Display XDR monitor starts at $ 4,999 (and requires either the $ 999 stand or a $ 199 VESA mount). As Apple noted back in September, the new Mac Pro will be built in the United States, similar to its cylindrical Mac Pro predecessor. You can order the devices tomorrow at Apple.com.

Sigma Japan confirms the release date for its L-mount 40mm F1.4, 105mm F1.4 ‘Art’ lenses

Sigma Japan has confirmed (machine-translated)the L-mount versions of its 40mm F1.4 DG HSM and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lenses, will start shipping on December 20, 2019.

Sigma says the control algorithm for the two lenses has been optimized to ensure full AF drive and body communication functionality for L-mount camera systems.

The two lenses will retail for roughly the same price as their Canon EF, Nikon F, Sigma SA and Sony E mount counterparts. B&H currently has the 40mm F1.4 DG HSM for L-mount and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM for L-mount available to pre-order for $ 1,399 and $ 1,599, respectively.

Photokina confirms Canon, Panasonic and Sony will be at 2020 expo

Photokina has shared a press release confirming Canon, Panasonic and Sony will be attending the 2020 expo in Japan and ensures the manufacturers ‘once again promise a fireworks display of new products at Photokina.’

The press release, titled “Photokina 2020: A Visit to the Motherland of Imaging,” comes three months after Photokina confirmed Leica, Nikon and Olympus won’t be attending the trade-show and reads as a rebuttal of sorts to remind the photography industry that Photokina is far from over, despite three main players dropping out.

The release of the press release follows a trip to Tokyo wherein delegation from the City of Cologne, Koelnmesse (the trade fair organizer responsible for Photokina) and the association of the photo industry (PIV) met with Canon executives, as well as other ambassadors and ‘high-ranking company representatives’ from Japan.

After briefly talking about the meeting in the introduction, Photokina follows with statements from Canon, Panasonic and Sony executives, which we’ve gathered below.

Canon Chief Executive Officer Image Communication Business Operations, Go Tokura, says:

‘As the imaging industry is at a significant turning point, we expect Photokina to be a leading show of the worldwide photo and imaging industry. Canon is eager to introduce new products and concept products at Photokina, thereby contributing to the industry’s success.’

Panasonic Director of Smart Life Network Business Division, Yosuke Yamane, says:

‘For many years, Photokina has been the ideal platform for us to present our product innovations. The Imaging industry is facing big changes and challenges these days. The press release wraps up with statements from Koelnmesse President and Chief Executive Officer Gerald Böse and Chairman of the photo industry association (PIV), Kai Hillebrandt.

The press release isn’t necessarily unusual when viewed in a vacuum, as using quotes from the exhibitors to promote the expo is nothing new or out of the ordinary. But when looked at in context of Leica, Nikon and Olympus dropping out just three months ago, it does seem as though the press release and statements are a mutual pact to at least give the illusion of Photokina being no different than before, if not better.

Sigma confirms Log picture profile, Raw over HDMI coming to its fp camera via firmware update

In an interview with Cinema5D, Sigma confirmed it’s bringing a firmware update to its full-frame fp camera that will add Log picture profile and Raw recording over HDMI.

The interview with Takuma Wakamatsu, Sigma’s product planner, took place during Inter BEE 2019. In the interview, Wakamatsu addresses a number of features that have already been confirmed to be on the horizon, such as in-camera CinemaDNG playback and still photo modes while recording video, but he also confirmed a future firmware update will include a Log picture profile in MOV mode and Raw recording over HDMI.

The Log picture profile should improve the dynamic range of the fp and offer more flexibility in post-production, while Raw recording over HDMI would allow external recorders, such as the popular Atomos Ninja V, to record ProRes RAW footage.

No specific timeframe is given for the firmware updates, but Cinema5D notes the updates will arrive in 2020 and be free of charge.

Fujifilm confirms release date for Neopan 100 ACROS II emulsion for 35mm, 120 formats

In April 2018, Fujifilm announced it was discontinuing its much-loved Acros 100 film stock. Now, more than a year later, Fujifilm has announced that its new Neopan 100 ACROS II film, first teased in June of this year, will start shipping in Japan on November 22, 2019 in 35mm and 120 formats.

According to Fujifilm, the newly developed Neopan 100 ACROS emulsion features the company’s ‘Super Fine particle technology,’ which better retains highlight gradation and improves overall sharpness that ‘emphasizes the contour of the subject.’

Fujifilm hasn’t shared any pricing information, but as noted by Emulsive, Rakuten Japan has both the 35mm and 120 versions listed for 1,045 Japanese yen, which equates to roughly $ 9.50 a roll.

Canon Korea promo video confirms the RF 70-200mm F2.8 lens won’t have internal zoom

A new video from Canon Korea gives us a closer look at Canon’s upcoming RF L F2.8 trinity and confirms what we’ve suspected from the get-go with the upcoming RF 70-200mm F2.8—it won’t be an internal zoom.

The 72-second video shows off sample images and specifications from each of the three lenses Canon showed off earlier this year: the RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM.

As expected from the first time we saw the ridiculously compact 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM, the lens will have an extending section for when shooting at longer focal lengths, as seen in the animated GIF above. This video marks the first time we’ve seen the extending section in action and as seen in the video, the zoom ring will have a rather short throw when going from 70mm out to 200mm.

Pricing and availability for these three lenses are still up in the air, but we expect to find out before the end of the year based on Canon’s own lens roadmaps.

New FCC database filing confirms forthcoming DJI Mavic Mini

Early this morning, two new products from the world’s leading drone manufacturer, DJI, were listed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). After being rumored for the past two months, the Mavic Mini is now officially on the FCC’s site. While the second filing is not labeled with a product name, it’s likely going to be a remote controller for the compact, foldable drone. The filings are FCC ID SS3-MT1SS51905 and FCC ID SS3-MR1SS51905.

It has been well over a year since DJI released a consumer-grade drone. The last two major products from the Chinese manufacturer are the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom, announced at the end of August 2018. The timing for releasing the Mavic Mini isn’t random. Not only is the Holiday season upon us, competing American manufacturer Skydio recently starting accepting reservations for its compact Skydio 2 drone. Shortly after GoPro announced its Karma drone, in September 2016, DJI responded by introducing the original Mavic Pro at a swanky event.

DroneDJ was the first to report on the Mavic Mini after photos were leaked online two months ago. One notable feature that will make it worth the purchase for some consumers is the rumored weight.

In the United States, a drone must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) if it weighs more than 250 grams (0.55 pounds) and less than 25kg (55 pounds). If speculation is spot on, the Mavic Mini will weigh 245 grams at takeoff negating the need for registration. Rules and regulations are more lenient in other countries where a drone weighs less as well.

Here are a few of the rumored specs for the Mavic Mini:

  • The DJI Mavic Mini will offer a remote since controlling a drone with a smartphone is a less than ideal experience.
  • It will have a flight time of up to 18 minutes.
  • Unlike the Spark, which is similar in size, it will have obstacle avoidance sensors.
  • The drone will have a range of 3.1 miles (5 km) and a top speed of 31mph (50 km/hr).
  • The drone will have a 12MP, 1/2.3” CMOS camera that can shoot up to 4K/30p, 2.7K/60p, and 1080p/120p video.
  • The expected retail price should be around $ 399 and the release date is expected soon to coincide with the Holiday season.

DJI owns a majority stake in camera company Hasselblad. There isn’t any word on whether they’ll incorporate their technology into the Mini’s camera as they did with the Mavic 2 Pro. The latter is currently the only drone in the company’s product line that features a camera with Hasselblad’s signature Natural Color Solution. DJI requested a short-term secrecy cycle of 180 days in a Confidentiality Letter from June 25th. While that gives them until late December to release the Mavic Mini, the Holiday season may expedite the release as soon as this coming month.

Nikon’s president confirms a ‘D5’ mirrorless equivalent is in the works

Japanese business publication Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun has shared a quote from a recent interview with Nikon’s CEO, Mr. Toshikazu Umatate, wherein he says a flagship mirrorless camera—equivalent to Nikon’s D5 DSLR—will be introduced.

The quote, translated via Google from Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun’s paywalled coverage (translated), reads:
