Polaroid Originals discontinues Spectra film due to the condition of aging cameras

04 Oct

Polaroid Originals has announced that it is discontinuing production of its wide-format Spectra film. The reason, CEO Oskar Smolokowski said in a statement on the company’s blog today, is due to the degraded nature of existing wide-format cameras.

‘Jamming and frequent breakdowns are now affecting the majority of these cameras,’ Smolokowski explained, ‘and unfortunately, this is not something we can influence with our film.’

In addition to selling its Spectra Color and B&W film products, Polaroid Originals also sold refurbished Polaroid Spectra cameras that were restored to full working order by specialists. This restoration process is no longer possible, however, and the company’s website now lists its refurbished cameras as sold out.

In his post, Smolokowski said, ‘After extensive testing, we have concluded that we cannot support these cameras any longer.’

The company will sell off its remaining batch of Specta film through its website, where the Spectra Color and B&W products are sold for $ 19.99 each; a triple-film pack is also offered for $ 55.99 USD. Smolokowski said the film will be on sale for a few months.

Production studio and early VR adopter Condition One has created its own rugged VR camera for internal use called ‘Bison,’ a name which references the first thing the company’s founder Danfung Dennis recorded with an early prototype. The camera won’t be put up for sale, and will instead be used to help create future VR features.

The company showcased Bison at NAB recently; the rig features a total of 16 cameras that produce 360-degree stereoscopic 3D videos with 3D positional audio. Videos are recorded at 48 fps with a combined 5.7K resolution. According to Condition One’s website, Bison can shoot footage at distances as close as 60cm/2ft, has a 2 hour recording time, a thermal management system, custom aluminum rig, custom carbon fiber tripod, remote trigger with a 792m/2600ft range and tablet control.

Final footage is created using Condition One’s proprietary 3D 360 stitching algorithms and software; the company describes the process as being ‘a fully automated production pipeline’ that it claims is the fastest and highest quality in the industry. Companies and teams interested in creating movies with Bison will need to team up with the studio to gain access.

First up, did HBO’s runaway success Game of Thrones commit treason with one of last year’s episodes? One reddit user claims to have spotted the 43rd President’s severed head on a spike during a scene where evil king Joffrey makes his bride-to-be look at Sean Bean’s impaled head. That claim was backed up by the show’s creators themselves on DVD commentary for the episode. So what happened? Well, apparently, to keep to their budget, the show’s producers had to use whatever prop heads they could get, reiterating that the decision wasn’t political, but financial. In any case, the showrunners and HBO have issued an apology and promised to alter the offending scene in future DVD releases. What do you guys think? Did Game of Thrones cross the line? Let us know. www.hollywoodreporter.com Next up, after spending years photographing the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, acclaimed photographer and video journalist Danfung Dennis sought a better way to communicate the reality of war through video. So he teamed up with a group of engineers to create Condition One, an immersive, 360-degree, virtual reality app for the iPhone and iPad. By shooting footage through a convex lens and linking it to the iPad’s gyroscope and accelerometer, Condition One creates a unique experience for viewers who can look around the videos by swiping or moving their iPad. With major deals already in place with companies like Mercedes, The Guardian, Discovery and investor Mark Cuban, expect this type of video to soon
