07 Nov

Profoto has announced it’s collaborated with Panasonic to bring Profoto Connect and Profoto Air Remote TTL support to the manufacturer’s cameras. As Panasonic said in its own press release today, owners of the LUMIX S1R, S1, GH5, GH5S and G9 models can update their firmware in order to use the two Profoto wireless transmitters.

VueScan application makes thousands of old scanners compatible with macOS Catalina

06 Nov

Apple’s latest desktop operating system, macOS Catalina, dropped support for 32-bit applications. As a result, many older scanners lost native support for the operating system, forcing owners to upgrade to newer hardware or use a different computer that retained compatibility. Third-party scanning software VueScan offers a different solution, namely support for around 6,000 older scanner models.

VueScan was upgraded this week to version 9.7. With it, Mac users can use their older 32-bit scanner with their Apple desktop or laptop even if they’re running macOS Catalina. The third-party software is made possible by reverse-engineering drivers for more than 6,000 older scanners from 42 manufacturers, including film scanner and flatbed models.

Manufacturers include Ricoh, Canon, Fujitsu, Kodak, Nikon, Panasonic, Polaroid, Samsung, Mitsubishi, and Epson, among others; a full list of supported models can be found here. Overall, VueScan supports around 2,400 scanner models on Windows, 2,100 models on Mac, and 1,900 models on Linux.

The software is available for $ 49.95 USD (Standard Edition) and $ 99.95 USD (Professional Edition), the latter of which includes support for film and slide scanning, among other things.

Loupedeck is now compatible with Adobe Premiere Pro CC

20 Sep

In June, Loupedeck launched an update to its editing console, including a physical redesign and added Capture One compatibility. Now, a big new software update aims to make the device attractive to an entirely new user group – the Loupedeck+ is now compatible with Adobe Premiere Pro CC, allowing for its use in video editing.

Configuration of the controls is customizable to adapt to your workflow, and configuration setups can be exported for sharing or use across multiple consoles. It is possible to create several LUTs (color lookup tables) for fast and efficient alteration of color and the system also supports flexible timeline navigation, content trimming and clip adjustment.

If Adobe Premier isn’t your video editor of choice, you might still be able to use Loupedeck in the future, as the company says it will be rolling out mode video software integrations later this year.

Loupedeck chief Mikko Kesti said in a statement:

“Our mission is to keep on improving the editing workflow, so it’s only fitting our next step is in the video editing space. Just like we developed the Loupedeck+ exclusively from community feedback, we felt it was imperative to listen to what our users had to say and make the device’s functionality even more well-rounded, providing all the same editing functions that photographers have at their fingertips to videographers. Users can now count on Loupedeck+’s intuitive design and user-friendly approach to enhance their video editing quality and increase their output. Our ongoing partnership with Adobe made introducing these new capabilities with its Premiere Pro CC suite an easy decision.”

The intelligent Rylo 360° camera is now compatible with Android

02 Mar

The impressive little Rylo 360° camera got a ton of attention when it debuted late last year, but unfortunately, the camera was iOS-only at launch. That all changes today with the release of Rylo for Android.

The Rylo 360° camera comes with two 208° lenses, 4K video resolution, and auto-stabilization technology, but most of its magic comes from software. The corresponding smartphone app lets you edit and “direct” your videos after capture: you can set specific focal points or select objects to be tracked before exporting or sharing the final product, making it an interesting option for any budding 360-degree video maker.

Apart from a new companion Android app, the new Android compatibility simply means a different syncing cable. Otherwise, the camera itself and all of the accessories in the box are the same as the iOS model.

As it is often the case with Android accessories, though, the Rylo doesn’t work with just any Android device. Rylo says the camera is compatible with most Android phones running Android 6.0 or newer, but its list of recommended devices includes mainly recent Samsung and Google high-end smartphones. Also listed are a few devices that are supported but don’t have the processing power to export 4K 360-degree video.

If you are an Android user and want to try Rylo for yourself, it’s now available for $ 500 from the Rylo website. And if you want to see why we called Rylo “a 360° camera done right,” click the big blue button below:

Sigma says three of its lenses are not fully compatible with the Canon EOS-1D X II

03 Jun

Sigma has announced that three of its lenses, the 20mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, 35mm F1.4 DG HSM Art and the 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM, aren’t ‘fully compatible with’ Canon’s newly released EOS-1D X Mark II. When one of these lenses is used with the camera, the resulting images may be underexposed. The company is developing firmware to correct the issue.

According to Sigma, the issue manifests when users choose ‘Center-weighted Average Metering’ or ‘Evaluative Metering.’ In addition, the company recommends users disable lens correction settings in the camera when using one of Sigma’s interchangeable lenses. This includes Chromatic aberration correction, Peripheral illumination correction, Distortion correction and Diffraction correction.

The latter point likely refers to an issue with the 35mm F1.4 Art lens and 1DX Mk II that surfaced last month in which images taken with the pair showed unusual banding around the edges. As SLR Lounge noted, turning off Peripheral illumination correction in-camera fixed the issue, which now appears to be Sigma’s official workaround. The camera maker also says that the Manual Override focus function isn’t available with the 1D X II when using its lenses.

Nikon issues D750 and D4s firmware updates, optimizes D750 VR with compatible lenses

02 Dec

Nikon has released firmware updates for its D750 and D4S DSLRs, providing both with a new external recording control option for use with external recorders using Atomos Open Protocol. At the end of a list of bug fixes, Nikon also mentions that the D750’s firmware version 1.10 introduces ‘optimal vibration reduction’ with vibration reduction lenses. We’re hoping this addresses a glitch in which VR can sometimes contribute to image shake.

Other notes on the firmware updates for both cameras relate to bug fixes in movie live view, and the D750’s update addresses some minor problems with HDR mode and in-camera Raw processing among other things. See below for more details.

Nikon D750 firmware version 1.10

  • An External recording control option has been added to the HDMI item in the SETUP MENU. If the camera is connected via HDMI to a third-party recorder that supports the Atomos Open Protocol (the Atomos SHOGUN, NINJA2, or NINJA BLADE), selecting On allows camera controls to be used to start and stop recording. More information is available in a supplementary manual.
  • Note:Choose an option other than 576p (progressive) or 480p (progressive) for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU.
  • Fixed the following issues:
    – The brightness of the live view photography display would not change when a command dial was rotated to adjust exposure compensation with On (Auto reset) selected for b Metering/exposure > b3 Easy exposure compensation > Easy exposure compensation in the CUSTOM SETTING MENU.
    – Although the preview button would stop the lens down to maximum aperture when assigned the Preview role, the maximum aperture indicator would not appear in the monitor.
    – In rare cases, the shutter would not be released when the user attempted to take photographs in movie live view.
    – About 4 seconds of static could be heard on audio recorded with external HDMI recorders during movie live view.
    – The shutter speed, aperture, and ISO sensitivity displayed in the monitor during movie live view would differ from values in the final movie file.
    – Part of the focus point would disappear if the user zoomed in while the framing grid was displayed.
    – Volume could sometimes not be adjusted if movies were played with indicators hidden during full-frame playback (None (image only)).
    – Exposure compensation would fail to produce the desired results if a negative value was selected when NEF (RAW) images were processed using the NEF (RAW) processing option in the RETOUCH MENU.
    – Images would in rare cases fail to record correctly with HDR (high dynamic range) selected in the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU.
    – If On was selected for Exposure smoothing during interval timer photography, every frame after the first would be overexposed.
    – File numbers were not assigned in the proper sequence.
    – The focus point would not be displayed in the correct location in the monitor.
    – In some languages, characters or parts of characters would be missing from the SETUP MENU > Location data > Position display.
    – In some languages, characters or parts of characters would be missing from the SETUP MENU > AF fine-tune > List saved values display.
    – In some regions, nothing would be displayed when Conformity marking was selected in the SETUP MENU.
  • Some help text has been changed.
  • Optimal vibration reduction is now available with vibration reduction lenses.

Nikon D4S firmware version 1.30

  • An External recording control option has been added to the HDMI item in the SETUP MENU. If the camera is connected via HDMI to a third-party recorder that supports the Atomos Open Protocol (the Atomos SHOGUN, NINJA2, or NINJA BLADE), selecting On allows camera controls to be used to start and stop recording. More information is available in a supplementary manual.

Note:

  • Choose an option other than 576p (progressive) or 480p (progressive) for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU.
  • Choose an option other than Auto for HDMI > Output resolution in the SETUP MENU when 640x  424; 30p or 640x  424; 25p is selected for Movie settings > Frame size/frame rate in the SHOOTING MENU.
  • Fixed the following issues:
    – In rare cases, the shutter would not be released when the user attempted to take photographs in movie live view.
    – About 4 seconds of static could be heard on audio recorded with external HDMI recorders during movie live view.
    – Exposure compensation would fail to produce the desired results if a negative value was selected when NEF (RAW) images were processed using the NEF (RAW) processing option in the RETOUCH MENU.
    – Images would in rare cases fail to record correctly with HDR (high dynamic range) selected in the SHOOTING MENU.
    – In portrait orientation, the monitor would not show the focus point in the correct location if 5:4 (30×24) was selected for Choose image area.
