DJI teases new release for June 11th with new video posted to social channels

09 Jun

DJI released a 21-second teaser video ahead of their latest product release titled ‘Learn to Win.’ An official announcement will be made this Tuesday, June 11th. The world’s top drone manufacturer released the Osmo Action camera less than a month ago.

Naturally, the Internet has offered up numerous theories on the next move for DJI, who hasn’t released a consumer-grade drone since the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom at the end of August last year. One possibility is their official entry into the lucrative and growing FPV racing market with a compact, agile drone. Another potential release could be a Software Development Kit (SDK) aimed at developers and tinkerers for custom applications.

The caption on the video, first posted to YouTube, hints at the latter SDK possibility as it reads ‘DJI was built by tiredless engineers who never stopped looking for answers and pushing boundaries. Now, get ready to push yours. If you’re ready to win, be prepared to learn.’

Rumors of a Spark 2 drone, slated for summer, have also circulated and are covered in detail by DroneDJ. The Phantom 4 series is still out of stock at DJI’s official online store, though representatives for the company have gone on record stating that a logical Phantom 5 follow-up is either on hold or, alternately, there was nothing to cancel in the first place.

PocketWizard releases MultiMAX II trigger with 20 ControlTL channels and more

18 Jul

Radio flash trigger manufacturer PocketWizard has reintroduced its much-loved MultiMAX transceiver, having added more control options and improved handling. The MultiMAX ll offers a total of 52 channels, including 20 dedicated to ControlTL devices, as well as improved features for time-lapse and sequential triggering.

The new version of the MultiMAX features a PowerControl function that allows the user to manually control the output of up to three groups of flashes compatible with the ControlTL system from the MultiMAX display panel. The screen is now illuminated by a blue LCD backlight, which the company says improves contrast and legibility, and the keypad is said to be brighter than that of the previous model.

The system’s intervalometer has had the burst limit lifted so users can set it for any number of flashes for as long as they like, making the mode useful for timelapse photography, and the SpeedCycler mode is now equipped to perform sequential firing of up to sixteen cameras or flashguns in sequence. That last part is useful in fast moving situations, when you can’t wait for an individual flash to recharge, so the MultiMAX just fires the next one in line.

The PocketWizard MultiMAX ll costs $ 230 and is available now. For more information, watch the video below or head over to the PocketWizard website.

MultiMAX Transceivers continue to be found in frequency crowded environments triggering arena flashes or remote cameras behind soccer goals, hockey nets, basketball nets, horse jumps, bull chutes, and the finish line of major International Track and Field events.

After a brief hiatus, the MultiMAX II returns with new features including 20 ControlTL channels, Manual Power Control and an improved blue backlit LCD which provides better contrast for improved viewing in dimly lit studios or on-site locations. The key pad is brighter too, allowing photographers to easily change settings on the fly. Its 344 MHz frequency sets it apart from 2.4 GHz noise in crowded venues.

“The MultiMAX II continues to provide incredible features that professional photographers have come to rely on. It has a whole suite of built-in tools designed for the demanding sports shooter like Patterns, programmable delays, and a settable contact time. The MultiMAX II is also Custom ID ready. The MultiMAX II has a total of 52 channels: 32 Standard Channels and 20 ControlTL Channels. Photographers can creatively control groups of lights or cameras allowing them to work in crowded venues or with multiple flash set-ups. Phottix launches Ares ll radio flash triggering system with more channels

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_2255968885″,”galleryId”:”2255968885″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Independent flash and accessories manufacturer Phottix has announced the next generation of its Ares remote flash triggering system that brings with it additional channels and improved security. The Ares ll transmitter and receiver have also both been given a facelift to include a new clearer control layout and LCDs to display functional information.

The new system offers a total of 16 radio channels, twice the number of the previous model, and can now deal with 4 groups of flashes. The units also include digital ID so that users can be sure other photographers in the area won’t interfere with their signal.

Using the first four channels the Ares ll can trigger Phottix Strato-compatible flash units, such as the Mitros+ hotshoe gun and the Indra studio heads, while all channels will trigger hotshoe flash units attached to an Ares ll receiver. The system allows a maximum flash sync speed of 1/250 sec, and both trigger and receiver are powered by two AA batteries each.

While the new units have a much more user-friendly design they have lost 50m of range compared to the original Ares, and can only operate at up to 150m – which is still enough for most uses. The units are compatible with the hotshoe and flash foot of cameras and flash units from ‘most major camera and flash systems (including Sony)’ according to Phottix.

The new Ares ll transmitter costs $ 54.95, as does the receiver. For more information visit the Phottix website.

Greg Gulbransen captured this photo of a polar bear on the frozen Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada when a rapid temperature drop at sunrise created the mist in this image.

‘I said to myself, “I hope a bear walks into this scene’ and sure enough this bear just walked into the scene,” he says. ‘The bear walked out there with his head down. I was so cold, I couldn’t feel my fingertips and I was praying my battery wouldn’t freeze and I said, “bear, would you just lift your head about 8 inches?” And sure enough, it lifted its head and that’s when I got the shot. I knew it was a special moment when I took it.’

If only nature was always so cooperative for photos.

We featured Dale Johnson’s work last year as part of our Readers’ Showcase series and since then he’s continued to gain recognition for his photos. He describes this shot from a trip inside Jomblang Cave in Indonesia as ‘the toughest selfie I’ve ever taken.’ If Instagram selfies were half as good as this one, we’d generally like them a whole lot more.

Derek Burdney’s photo of a Texas thunderstorm earns him the contest’s third place prize. Based in Omaha, Neb. Burdney says of this storm ‘The [weather] models looked good, so we got in position and watched this thing develop. It was a beautiful storm and everything was good for tornado production. It was really rotating. It never threw a tornado down, but it was really photogenic.’
