dPS Weekly Photography Challenge Mirrors

01 Aug

The post dPS Weekly Photography Challenge Mirrors appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

We asked for your suggestions for our weekly photo challenge over on Twitter, and Todd replied with ‘Mirrors‘ which is always a fun challenge! Most people have access to one (My 11yo needs to use one more before going to school haha) and the creativity factor is high on this one – be in the frame, don’t be, it’s your choice!

#dPSMirrors is the theme, make sure you use the hashtag if you’re posting on social media, and pop across and thank Todd for the theme this week (Feel free to suggest a theme in your comment!)

Angling the mirror to show a different scene within a scene as above, how did I do it? Guesses welcome! Was it one frame or two?

Obviously I didn’t venture out of my bathroom for my series of images, and that’s fine – you can do the same! I had an idea for another photo, but I got ‘that look’ when I asked my wife if I could take her full length mirror to the park… bah! Anyway!

The dPS Weekly Photography Challenge – The Street

24 Jul

The post The dPS Weekly Photography Challenge – The Street appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

This is a pretty broad theme, I’m sure you’ll agree! “The Street” or #dPSTheStreet has but one goal and that is to get you, at some stage in this next week to take your camera with you when you leave the house and head down the street. Find a scene and make it interesting. This photo is of my friend Elly who owns a coffee shop around the corner from my house, we’re all back in lockdown here in Melbourne, but a cafe can operate and so I head around to support them and grab my morning coffee. Today I took my camera with me (A Sony a7RMk3 and a 35mm lens) with the goal of making a frame for this challenge. I was going to go with the front window cakes (We have to order through the door and stay outside) display, but when I brought the camera up to my eye and half-pressed my shutter to focus, the camera had other ideas! My focus point was set to single and was slightly off the middle and just caught Elly in the frame and the photo was made. I like the image, despite it being a little less sharp than I’d have liked, because of the various elements in the frame, kinda takes me on a bit of a journey.

Anyways! Find a street scene and make it interesting! Looking forward to seeing what this week’s images have in store.

Find your photograph and share it with us in the comments under this post, or share it to social media and tag us!

The Weekly Photography Challenge – 2021 So Far

10 Jul

The post The Weekly Photography Challenge – 2021 So Far appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

We’ve passed the half-way mark for 2021 already, almost hard to believe really… This week your photo challenge is super easy – Share your favourite photograph (that you’ve taken) from the first half of 2021.

  1. Must be your own photograph. (Do I need to say this?!)
  2. Must tag your photo #dPS2021SoFar
  3. Has to be from this year. (Obviously haha)
  4. Share a note about why it’s your favourite.

Your photo can be amazing from a photographic perspective or a special moment for you personally. Mine, below, was a moment that the sun almost poked through when we went for a trip down to the 12 Apostles, what was supposed to be a quick, hand-held family memory turned into a capture of the (on that trip) seldom seen light on the stunning Apostles. The trip was a good one amidst lockdowns, so t’was a special moment.

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Cold

03 Jul

The post The Weekly Photography Challenge – Cold appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

This week our challenge may or may not be a direct result of me being in a house this week with no heating, school holidays for the kids here in Melbourne and the weather has been pretty chilly, so ‘cold’ it is!

The theme is #dPSCold use that hashtag wherever you share your photo. Make sure you take a new photo for this challenge, you don’t learn much by grabbing a photo out of your archive and uploading it ?

A cold photography scene

Tips for shooting in the cold or perhaps you could try the frozen bubbles thing

Keeping in mind that ‘cold’ could be many things as it’s applied to photography. A cold colour temperature, a cold scene and that could be many things too… Someone that’s cold, physically, mentally, it’d your story to tell!

Upload your photo into the comments field below this post (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section below this post) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see. Or, if you’d prefer, upload them to your favourite photo-sharing site and leave the link to them.

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Food

26 Jun

The post The Weekly Photography Challenge – Food appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

Food photography comes in many shapes and sizes, from a phone in a cafe capturing your coffee, to high-end cookbooks and beyond. This week your challenge, thanks to our dPS Group member, Julia, is food! And it can be anything that’s food related (not drinks, that’s in a few weeks)

Share your photographs in the comments section under this post (Details at the bottom) or on social media and make sure you tag us in your post and include the hashtag #dPSFoodChallenge

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Food

We have SO many great food photography tips and articles on our website, I’ve made a small collection for you.

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Food

I personally love food photography (I’m still learning!) and I can’t wait to see what you all photograph and share! Remember, the dPS Photo Challenges are about pusing yourselves to make a new photograph, so I will be doing that, too! I have a couple of ideas in mind and will venture out to grab a photograph or two!

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Food

Your ‘Food’ photograph could also incorporate the process of food, above the chef was getting ready to toss something over the flame – looks fun, don’t singe your eyebrows!

Now, how do you post your photograph in the comments under this post? The Weekly Photography Challenge – Dogs

19 Jun

The post The Weekly Photography Challenge – Dogs appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

They’re everywhere! Pets, running back and forth across parks, sitting on the couch beside you as you read this post about the weekly challenge… Dogs, man’s best friend or maybe you’re not a fan of them and that’s ok too (Though it might make this assignment difficult!) this week is simple, the theme is ‘dogs’ and it doesn’t really matter how you photograph your dog, as long as you do.

The Hashtag for this week’s challenge is #dPSDogs for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Of course you can join and share your photograph in our private Facebook group!

Dog on a newspapper

This little chap used to sit on the counter at the little news shop outside Earls Court Tube in London, I’d see him most mornings.

Betsy the Dog

This is ‘Betsy’ (I didn’t get the bloke’s name, just his dog) they were walking down Portobello Road market… Betsy whipped her head around as I went to grab a photo… you know what they say about photographing pets & children! You have to be quick!

Here are a few articles that might help you out with some technique or ideas for photographing your (or someone else’s) dog.

  1. Why taking photos of your pets will make you a better photographer.
  2. How to photograph your pets.
  3. Tips & Tricks for Photographing your own dog.

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Sports

12 Jun

The post The Weekly Photography Challenge – Sports appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

It doesn’t need to be some sort of pro-level sport, it can be a local football game, some skateboarding on the street, Surfing or Soccer… You can choose, but you have to go and find, and photograph some form of sport or something connected to a sport. Easy! As usual, you need to take your photograph this week and share it in the comments below (There is a HOW TO at the end of this post, just keep reading) or you can share your photo in our FACEBOOK GROUP or on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter where you can tag us (how to tag someone on social media)

If you’re tagging your photograph on social media, please use this week’s hashtag #dPSSports

Sports photography, just due to the sheer fact that most sports move at a bit of a fast pace, is usually approached with a faster shutter speed. Not all sports, but a lot. The surfing photo below, combined with a brighter day (outdoors, where most surfing is done, I’m sure you’ll agree!) and some good fast movement by the surfer left me with a 1/8000th shutter speed at f/3.2. I could have stopped down to bring my shutter down some, but my goal, at that distance from the surfer (190mm on a Canon 70-200 f/2.8) was to isolate him from the whitewash in the bottom of the frame, and aim for a nice sharp wave. (Indoor sports photography and Outdoor sports photography can be quite different in terms of light!)

Missed a challenge? Catch up here!

Surf Photography Sydney Australia Simon Pollock

I’ve photographed a lot of my son’s soccer for the last couple of years, just a dad on the sidelines with a camera, for fun, to document his games and the enjoyment he gets from playing his sport, I’ve slowed my shutter a little in this frame to try and get a little movement, depicting the action, I didn’t really achieve it, but it’s one way to show action in sports photography – give it a try!

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Rule of Thirds

05 Jun

The post The Weekly Photography Challenge – Rule of Thirds appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

Join in our weekly photography challenge! This week your challenge theme is ‘Rule of Thirds’ – read on, have fun!

We haven’t explored the rule of thirds in over a year, and sometimes its good to get back to your roots. If you don’t know what the rule of thirds is, you can read all about it over here on THIS article on our blog.

When you post your photo, make sure you include a hashtag #dPSThirds

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Rule of Thirds

“The rule of thirds is a compositional guideline that breaks an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so you have nine pieces and four gridlines. According to the rule, by positioning key elements along the gridlines, you’ll end up with better compositions.” – Read the full article

Here’s my personal exploration o the rule of thirds! I got a gig as the staff photographer for one of the Red Bull Air Race series in London (Sure, my name tag had someone else’s name on, but it’s all good!) Peter Besenyei’s Edge 540 slicing the third.

The Weekly Photography Challenge – Rule of Thirds

Here’s a great article with a shed-load of examples for you, well worth a read and afterwards, explore what’s around you and share your own photograph that explores the ‘rule of thirds’ – that article (click!)

The Weekly Photography Challenge – High Noon

29 May

The post The Weekly Photography Challenge – High Noon appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Sime.

High Noon, when the sun is its most harsh, when things tend to get very bright, can be a tough time to make a photograph – that’s why, this week, we’re challenging you to share your best ‘high noon’ photograph in this week’s weekly challenge.

Remember to tag your photographs #dPSHighNoon

Generally most photographers will try to avoid high-noon, or the middle of the day, so that they don’t need to struggle with the harsh light (and in some cases, the heat, though from a cold Melbourne afternoon I say ‘bring the heat!’) but when you have a small window in which to shoot and you have to go and make photos, all you can do is the best you can do!

Here are a couple of little helpers on the blog to help you out;

“Bright ideas for shooting in the midday sun”
“3 Quick tips for photographing in harsh midday sun”

The Weekly Photography Challenge – High Noon

Your photograph can be of anything, a portrait, a wildlife scene, a landscape, but it must be taken in the middle of the day – we’re not checkin’ exif because we trust you! Ha.

Remember to tag your photographs #dPSHighNoon

But how do I upload my photos?

Upload your photo into the comments field below this post (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section below this post) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see. Or, if you’d prefer, upload them to your favourite photo-sharing site and leave the link to them.
