Shiftcam is a 6-in-1 lens case for the iPhone 7 Plus

15 May

The dual-camera of the iPhone 7 Plus with its 28 and 56mm equivalent lenses, offers more flexibility in terms of focal length and framing than most smartphones. The Kamerar attachment we tested some time ago increases this flexibility even further by adding more tele reach, macro capability and a fish-eye lens.

The new Shiftcam camera lens case that is now on Kickstarter takes things one step further by adding even more lens options. The concept it similar to the Kamerar, with a system that is built around a shock-proof case that comes with a camera grip and an optional wrist strap. A snap mechanism and sliding lens module allow for quickly switching between telephoto, wide-angle, fisheye and macro options. The current prototype design includes the following lenses:

  • 120 Degree Wide-angle
  • 10X Macro
  • 20X Macro
  • 180 Degree Fisheye Lens
  • 2X Telepho

The makers of the Shiftcam are currently collecting funds for finalization of the design and mass production on the Shiftcam Kickstarter page where you can also secure a Shiftcam case by pledging $ 59. Shipping is planned for August 2017. We are hoping to get our hands on a review unit soon for a more in-depth look.

CROZ DIY camera offers just the basics in a tiny clear case

02 May

CROZ, a small DIY camera that first appeared on Kickstarter in October 2016, is now available for purchase. This camera is shipped as a do-it-yourself kit that requires buyers to assemble the device. The resulting camera, once fully assembled, is quite small and features a clear case that makes the internal components visible. The CROZ camera was developed by Taiwanese company Paper Shoot and designed by Hyle Design.

CROZ is a digital camera, though it lacks a display for previewing and reviewing photos. The camera features a 5MP CMOS sensor, LARGAN Precision Lens, four photo filters (B&W, Color, Sepia, and Blue), a microUSB connection port, and ‘automatic image algorithms.’ The entire camera, including the two AAA batteries that power it, weighs 98g / 3.4oz and measures in at 12mm / 0.45in thick.

Photos are stored to an SD card (up to 32GB capacity supported). Users can swap out the lenses based on need, as well; the kit ships with a wide-angle lens and a fisheye lens. Paper Shoot, which is offering the kit for $ 3,899 NT / $ 129 USD / £100 GBP, explains, “CROZ is designed to be simple and straight forward – it is a digital camera, period.”

ExoLens Case for iPhone 7 supports Zeiss lenses while protecting phone

30 Mar

ExoLens has announced the launch of its new ExoLens Case for iPhone 7, a case designed to protect the phone while also supporting the company’s ExoLens PRO with Optics by Zeiss accessory lenses. The case is made from clear impact-resistant materials that, says the company, offer ‘high-end aesthetics’ while keeping a low profile. The case can be used with and without the Zeiss PRO lenses.

ExoLens PRO owners are able to switch between the line’s various lenses without removing the case, the latter of which is described as ‘ultra durable’ with soft Black TPU material along the outer edges. ExoLens has launched the case for the iPhone 7 ($ 49.95 USD) on its website and through select global retailers, and will launch a version for the iPhone 7 Plus model later on in 2017.

Federal judge dismisses case against Kentucky ‘Drone Hunter’

25 Mar

A federal judge in Kentucky has dismissed a lawsuit against William Meredith, a self-proclaimed ‘Drone Hunter,’ who shot down a $ 1500 drone that was flying over his property.

The pilot, David Boggs, sued Meredith last year claiming that his drone was flying in legal airspace as determined by the FAA and therefore was not trespassing. A 1946 Supreme Court decision asserted that a property owner’s rights extend up to 83 feet in the air.

US District Judge Thomas Russell ruled that federal court is not the proper venue for the lawsuit, noting that the FAA has not enforced any regulations regarding aerial trespassing, nor was the agency a party in the suit. Instead, the Judge said that the lawsuit should be litigated in Kentucky State Court under existing trespassing laws.

Boggs’ attorneys have not said whether he will appeal to a higher court – in this case, the 6th US Circuit. In the meantime, drone pilots should probably steer clear of Meredith’s property.

Lumee Duo is an iPhone case with built-in illumination

14 Mar

The LuMee Duo is an iPhone case that, thanks to rubber edges and a solid shell, offers protection for your device. But it also comes with a feature that many mobile photographers will appreciate: Integrated LEDs on the front and back. They offer a brighter and softer illumination than the phone’s built-in LED flash, making it an interesting option for those who frequently take smartphone images in dim light conditions.

The LEDs are dimmable, and Lumee also claims they reduce the red-eye effect in flash photos. The case comes with a built-in battery that provides power for up to two hours and for 36 hours at the lowest brightness. The Lumee is available for iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and comes in Black Matte, Gold Matte and Rose Matte.

The Lumee Duo launched initially in December in the USA and Canada, but is now available on Apple.com and at Apple stores in 15 additional countries, including Australia, China, Germany, Japan and the UK. Depending on phone model prices range from $ 40 to $ 70. More information is available on Lumee.com.

Lensrentals and the mysterious case of the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM

25 Feb

One lens’ bad fortune is our gain: the Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM’s optical test results had been puzzling the team at Lensrentals, and when a customer dropped one recently a teardown was in order. The teardown took a total of six hours – twice the usual amount of time required – and along the way they found a lot of solidly constructed pieces, a mysterious component they dubbed the ‘Southern Fairy Tale Ring,’ and a great deal of silicone glue.

This article details the first part of the teardown, showing the disassembly of the first half of the lens up to the point where a snack break was needed. It’s a long read but as always, thoroughly fascinating and entertaining. It turns out that construction of the FE 70-200mm F2.8 is a bit unconventional, and that’s not a bad thing at all.

The iBlazr Case comes with 40 LEDs and a built-in battery pack

24 Nov

Ukrainian company Concepter, which brought us the iBlazr smart flash in 2013, has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to fund production and distribution of its latest product, the iBlazr Case. The iBlazr Case combines 40 dual-tone LEDs for better flash photography with a 2,500 mAh battery pack and is compatible with the iPhone 6, 6S, 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7, and 7 Plus models.

The ’40 high-power LEDs’ on the rear of the case are triggered by the phone’s built-in flash via a light sensor, which means the case works with virtually any iPhone camera app. According to its makers it provides 5 times the light output of the built-in LED flash or approximately 300 lux at 1 meter subject distance. The beam angle is 180 degrees and the built-in battery, which can also be used to charge the iPhone, is good for 1500 flash exposures. When the case is used as a flash light it provides more than 2.5 hours of constant illumination.

The LEDs can also be used to display customizable notifications for incoming calls, texts or other events, when the case is paired to the iPhone via a Bluetooth connection. The Shotlight companion app allows for adjustment of the flash color and brightness and is a fully-fledged camera app in its own right.

The iBlazr Case is made of ABS plastic and coated with a rubber material. The built-in battery is charged via USB Type-C port. You can now reserve a unit by pledging $ 55 or more on the project’s Kickstarter page. Shipping in envisaged for April 2017.

25 Oct

The oldest known Nikon camera in existence has gone up for auction at WestLicht. This particular Nikon I, serial number 60924, was made in April 1948 and is notable as being the third camera produced by Nikon. WestLicht describes the camera’s condition as ‘B+,’ and says it includes the original Nikkor-H 2/5cm no.70811 with a matching Nikon cap in ‘fantastic original condition.’

The Nikon I still has its original shutter, according to WestLicht, as well as engravings that indicate the serial number, ‘Nippon Kogaku Tokyo’ and ‘Made in Occupied Japan.’ In addition to the camera itself, the auction includes the original double-strap carrying case; WestLicht describes the case as ‘extremely rare.’

The auction’s starting price is €90,000, with WestLicht estimating the camera will sell for between €160,000 to €180,000 (about $ 174,000 to $ 195,750).
