The Cars of Mad Max: Fury Road, Photographed Filth-Free Before Filming

If you’ve ever wondered what the cars of Mad Max: Fury Road would look like all cleaned up, or you want some inspiration for a totally bonkers hot rod creation of your own, check out this photo series by photographer John Platt. Minute details of the vehicles can be seen in shockingly pristine states, as they were just after their creation and prior to the start of filming, giving us a good look at all the custom contraptions welded together into junkyard monsters.

In the movie, there’s so much desert dust kicked up by the tires of all those vehicles, we miss out on a lot of those details. The cars are appropriately filthy – and in this universe, they probably always would have been.

It’s hard to imagine anyone putting time and effort into washing and shining them up in between epic chases on the sand, and all those parts came from scrap yards anyway.

That makes Platt’s photo series all the more satisfying. He got to photograph some of the movie’s 150 custom vehicles in his studio with proper lighting before they got dirty, and it’s a good thing, too – most of them were utterly destroyed during filming.

Production designer Colin Gibson individually designed and sculpted each car and motorcycle according to writer and director George Miller’s vision. No wonder it took 15 years to complete pre-production. See the whole series here.

Time Machines: Langdon Clay’s Gritty Cars Of New York City

12 Dec

[ By Steve in Art & Photography & Video. ]

langdon-clay-cars-10

Photographer Langdon Clay captured New York‘s bruised & battered road warriors at rest, evoking a dirtier and more dangerous era of the city that never sleeps.

langdon-clay-cars-18

langdon-clay-cars-11

New York City in the 1970s was a city on the slippery slope to disaster; a major metropolis whose decline into bankruptcy, pervasive corruption and rampant crime portended a grim dystopian future fit for the likes of Snake Plissken. Armed with only his trusty Leica camera and rolls of Kodachrome film, Langdon Clay ventured into the Big Apple’s littered streetscapes, finding a fitting iconography for troubled times amongst the oft-filthy and snow-encrusted parked cars sheltering under the unforgiving glare of sodium-vapor streetlights.

langdon-clay-cars-7

Langdon Clay, a native of NYC born in 1949, grew up in New Jersey and Vermont before moving back to the city of his birth in 1971. Like many photographers of the era, Clay cut his teeth on black and white composition but once immersed in New York’s unique urban milieu, inspiration struck. “I experienced a conversion of sorts in making a switch from the ‘decisive moment’ of black and white to the marvel of color,” relates Clay, “a world I was waking up to every day. At the time it seemed like an obvious and natural transition. What was less obvious was how to reflect my world of New York City in color… I discovered that night was its own color and I fell for it.”

Checkered Past

langdon-clay-cars-9b

langdon-clay-cars-9

From 1974 through 1976, often in winter and always after dark, Clay roamed the streets of New York and nearby Hoboken, New Jersey seeking out likely land-barge subjects. Most – though not all – of his photos depict used and abused Detroit iron of the Malaise Era with a few stubborn survivors of the Space Age tossed in for good measure. Of course, no expose of New York’s cars would be complete without a Checker or two: the pair above includes one once-ubiquitous New York cab and a rarer, privately-owned Checker Marathon.

Apple Spread

langdon-clay-cars-8

langdon-clay-cars-5

We’re not sure why it took Clay forty-odd years to publish his collection of mid-seventies car photos… perhaps, like fine wine, a significant passage of time was required to imbue his subjects (and their surroundings) with the flavor of their long-passed era. In the event, “Cars – New York City 1974 – 1976”, published by Steidl, features 96 photographs spread over 132 pages.

Camouflaged Solar Panels: Tesla Roof Tiles Power Home Batteries & Electric Cars

21 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

tesla-solar-roof

Elon Musk is attacking the question of energy storage and consumption at home, first with electric cars, then with home batteries and now the final piece of the puzzle: solar panels people will actually want to show off.

tesla-material-types

Developed in collaboration with 3D, their semi-translucent Solar Roof tiles cost less than ordinary roofs, insulate better and best of all they generate energy to charge your electric batteries (Powerwall) and automobiles (Model X). This is effectively the final missing piece from the ultimate sustainable-power smart house.

teslatiles

The three-layered design features a normal solar panel at the bottom with a film on top that renders it invisible from below but operational under the sun’s rays coming from above. At the top is a tempered glass that is shatter-resistant, making it more durable than conventional clay (with a lifespan well beyond the typical 20-year roof).

telsa-powerwall-batteries

Aside from these benefits, perhaps the single biggest selling point is the array of material styles: Textured Glass, Slate Glass, Tuscan Glass and Smooth Glass. It may sound superficial but looks matter — neighbors complain and residents shy away from too-overt solar tech attached to their house.

tesla-demo-house

And people trust Tesla to do more than make better technology: they expect a high level of visual design as part of the package. Also, since they are all coming from the same collection of companies, one can expect superior installation and integration options tying Tesla cars, Powerwalls and Solar Tiles together. Between the tech and its brand backing, this development promises to boost solar adoption to new heights.

Totally Transparent: 14 See-Through Homes, Cars, Gadgets & Tech

06 Oct

[ By SA Rogers in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

transparent-kayak-3

If all walls and opaque surfaces were to disappear, leaving only see-through materials, what effect would that have on how we perceive the world around us? Designers present transparency in all sorts of objects, from washing machines and kayaks to entire houses, as a way to get a clearer picture of how we interact with and connect to our environments and each other.

PurePods: Clear Vacation Homes in New Zealand

All of the inner workings of a full-sized functional car are on display through a transparent acrylic body on this clear car by TWR Automotive, a company that manufactures auto parts. The car may not actually be road-ready, intended for exhibitions only, but it looks pretty cool and it’s fun to imagine watching the parts in motion.

Designed to completely immerse occupants in nature in any location around the world, the glass houses by Santambrogiomilano consist of structural glass on every surface except the ground floor. Different versions are adapted for different climactic conditions, with ‘Snow House’ able to withstand heavy snow loads, for example. Want privacy in one particular room? Sliding curtains make it possible, but the houses are intended for places where peeping toms are not a concern.

Infinity Kitchen

transparent-kitchen-1

Better hope your kitchen cleaning habits are on point – the ‘Infinity Kitchen’ by Dutch firm MVRDV won’t be forgiving with crumbs and streaks, as it displays everything from your stored food to your flatware and even features a clear cooktop and sink. “I see this as part of a wider dream, this kitchen,” says designer Winy Maas. “Imagine if not only our kitchens were transparent, but the walls through to the neighbor and the next neighbor even. This would create infinite perspectives in our cities. It would make within our claustrophobic environments possibly a view into the direction of the mountains or the sea.”

Transparent Kayaks

Crystal-clear kayaks are actually catching on, with models like the Molokini, Crystal Explorer Kayak and See Through Canoe offering users views of the aquatic life beneath them as they float. Made of Lexan for durability, these transparent vessels start at around $ 1,000 each.

Wheels of Steel: Full-Sized Art Cars Made of Nothing But Scrap Metal

09 Sep

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

scrap cars 1

Their body panels consist of a lacework of metal gears, their windshields no more than mesh, their seats steel and the spaces under their hoods hollow, but these life-sized car sculptures still manage to look like they could fly down the street at top speeds at any moment. A group of 50 artists raids the scrapyards of Pruszków, Poland for trash they can integrate into their Gallery of Steel Figures, a museum full of impressively lifelike recycled art.

The art collective previously wowed the internet with their sculptural recreations of pop culture figures, including Predator, the Na’avi from Avatar and Transformers. Their latest creation includes faithfully reproduced replicas of iconic cars, including a Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador, Fiat 500, Maserati GranTurismo and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.

World’s First Art Exhibition for Dogs Features Fountains, Fans & Cars

dog gallery wall art

British inventor, artist and satirist Dominic Wilcox is at it again, this time with a contemporary art exhibition aimed at canine attendees with a range of interactive installations purpose-built for pups.

Play More in London has an array of dog-oriented artworks set low on the gallery walls as well as other more directly experiential displays.

Cruising Canines, for instance, includes a cardboard car with cut-out windows and a fan to simulate a brisk drive through the English countryside.

dog giant bowl

Dinnertime Dream consists of a giant dog bowl that serves as a ball pit, the balls looking like extra-large pieces of dried dog food.

dog bowl side

A series of normal-sized doggy bowls operate as fountains, shooting water between them that can be used for bathing or drinking by so-inclined canines.

dog painting colors

“Contemporary art has long been an important source of inspiration and fascination for humans,” says Wilcox, “but never before has it been created with a view to drawing the same kind of emotions out of animals instead.”

dogs with art

Complimenting the interactive elements are a series of original paintings and multimedia displays by artists Nick White, Clare Mallison, Joanne Hummel-Newell, Robert Nicol and Michelle Thompson. While amusing for human companions as well, these works were tailored to be visible to dogs in terms of their colors and shades. The exhibition and its contents were all crafted in consultation with dog experts and veterinarians. It really is, as they say, for the dogs.

Mobile Museums: French Train Cars Filled with Impressionist Art

07 Jun

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

french train car musems 1

Commuters traveling from Gare Saint-Lazare to Vernon-Giverny in France get to gaze up at a selection of impressionist art from the Musée d’Orsay applied right onto the walls and ceilings of their train cars. The SNCF (French National Railway Company) collaborated with the adhesive experts at 3M for a summer-long installation that will make rail travel a lot more beautiful and relaxing. Three double-height cars on the RER line have been altered for the project, photographed by Christophe Recoura so the rest of the world can catch a glimpse, too.

french train car museums 2

An adhesive graphic film printed with impressionist scenes was carefully applied to immerse train travelers in these serene compositions starring the vague painterly brush strokes the movement is known for. Each car has its own theme: gardens and water, local landscapes or Paris industrialization.

This particular line serves visitors heading to Normandy, the birthplace of Impressionism and home of the annual Impressionist Festival. Sight-seers can gaze up at works by painters like Claude Monet as they travel to his former home in Giverny or to the André Malraux Museum (MuMa), which hosts the second-largest collection of Impressionist works in the world after the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.

In fact, a long-serving steam train line direct from Paris to Normandy is credited with encouraging artists to travel to that lush, peaceful corner of France in the first place as Normandy became home to a new school of open-air painting. The trains carried the artists, their families and their aristocratic clientele back and forth between the two cities, delivering them from the modern metropolis to a countryside full of cliffs, meadows and Gothic cathedrals.

Bird Biomimicry in Action: 12 Avian-Inspired Jets, Drones & Cars

14 Apr

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

bird inspired skeleton race car 2

The very same evolution-driven characteristics that enable birds to glide effortlessly through the air can be applied to everything from drones to bullet trains to make them faster, lighter, more nimble and all around cooler looking. Avian-inspired aircraft with nature’s most aerodynamic silhouettes, cars with frames modeled on bird skeletons, gull wing fighter jets and even the U.S. military’s current B2 Spirit Bomber look to the skies for design and performance improvements.

Yamaha with Swan Wing-Shaped Paneling

bird inspired yamaha

bird inspired yamaha 2

With an overall design inspired by flowing garments on a high fashion runway, the Yamaha 04GEN scooter concept has an elegant birdlike frame and two transparent body panels modeled on the wings of the swan. The likeness is especially evident when the panels are flipped up. The experimental concept model was unveiled at the first Vietnam Motorcycle Show in Ho Chi Minh City, and there’s no word as to whether it will actually go into production.

Lockheed Stratoliner

bird inspired lockheed

bird inspired lockheed 2

Designer William Black created the Lockheed Stratoliner in tribute to the bar-tailed Godwit, a bird that holds the record for traveling the farthest without a single stop (7,258 miles.) Designed for long distances, it uses four cryogenic hydrogen turbofans as its engines, emitting zero pollution. The oversized wings and swooping body come straight from the Australian wading bird, as well. Considering that hydrogen-powered flight is still far off from being a reality on such a large scale, this is destined to remain a concept for the indefinite future.

Kingfisher-Inspired Shinkansen Bullet Train
bird inspired kingfisher train

bird inspired kingfisher train 2

bird inspired kingfisher train 3

Engineer Eiji Nakatsu, a general manager of the technical development department for Japan’s high-speed bullet trains, also happens to be a birdwatcher, and not just by coincidence. He realized studying the flight of birds could help make trains faster and lighter, pushing the boundaries of innovation in his field. The typical train nose design was creating incredibly loud sonic booms as it emerged from tunnels, and needed some tweaking. Nakatsu recalled the way a kingfisher’s scoop-like beak enables it to dive into water at high speed with barely a splash, and applied the same shape to the train, eliminating the noise problem and enabling it to run at higher speeds.

Swan Plane, Chicken Aircraft & Seagull Jets by Alex Brady

Bird Inspired Seagull Jet Brady

bird inspired chicken brady

An odd swan-shaped plane, seagull-inspired fighter jets and an aircraft that combines the forms of chickens and dragons are among the fantastical aircraft concepts by British artist Alex Brady. Admitting that they’re 100 percent whimsical, Brady isn’t too concerned about the opinions of experts, who have noted that these creations couldn’t fly without the invention of new propulsion systems. His other designs take inspiration from manta rays, warthogs, wood lice, porpoises and even a pterodactyl.

Signal-Free Intersections: Future Streets for Self-Driving Cars

09 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

driverless car intersection

All of our automotive infrastructure is designed around the needs of human drivers, but in a world of driverless cars, a crossroads need not slow anyone down, let alone force someone to stop.

A team of researchers from MIT, Swiss Institute of Technology and the Italian National Research Council developed this Light Traffic concept for maintaining safe distances and speeds, moving vehicles through quickly, efficiently and fairly. Traffic problems are boiled down to a system of sequences, each accommodating different volumes from different directions.

driverless 2

Vehicles approaching the intersection are slotted into a system that slows them down in advance, anticipating the traffic coming from all sides.

driverless 3

By avoiding unnecessary stops, vehicle emissions are reduced, fuel is saved, and annoyance alleviated. Road infrastructure would last longer too, while the lack of lights would reduce costs both upfront and ongoing. In time, such systems could even reduce the need for lanes, giving back space for sidewalks, greenery or other uses.

Roller Coaster for Cars: Steep Bridge in Japan is Almost Vertical

09 Feb

[ By Steph in Destinations & Sights & Travel. ]

steep bridge

You’d likely feel more than a little trepidation approaching this bridge head-on, wondering how in the world your car is going to drive straight up a nearly-vertical surface. Spanning Lake Nakaumi between Matsue and Sakaiminato in Japan, the Eshima Ohashi bridge has a gradient of 6.1 percent on one side and 5.1 on the other. The third largest rigid-frame bridge in the world, this intimidating structure is the nightmare of anyone with a bridge phobia, especially since it runs a full mile over the water.

steep bridge 2 steep bridge 3

When you see it from the side, it doesn’t look quite as dramatic, but the angle leading up to the apex is no joke. Its extraordinary height enables even the tallest of ships to pass under it without the need for a drawbridge, allowing traffic to continue between the two cities without interruption. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart.

steep bridge 5 steepb ridge 4

Surpassing it in height is France’s MIllau Viaduct, which bests even the Eiffel Tower at over 885 feet from the ground. Still, imagine trying to drive over this thing on a foggy night, in the rain, or even worse, when the roads are slick from snow and ice. It seems like cars would just slip and slide right back down, which probably wouldn’t be as much fun as it sounds.
