Chinese satellite captures image showing both Earth and the Moon’s far side

China’s Longjiang-2 satellite has captured an incredible image featuring both the far side of the Moon and Earth in the background. The data was received by the Netherlands’ Dwingeloo Radio Telescope from an amateur radio transceiver built by a team at China’s Harbin University of Technology.

The satellite first provided the team with partial images of the Moon and Earth back in October, but then was inactive to avoid interfering with China’s Chang’e 4 Lunar mission. The satellite resumed activity on January 19 and captured a time-lapse, including one featuring the Moon’s far side and Earth, on February 3.

According to the team’s initial report, the images have been color corrected by radio amateurs. A team shared an uncorrected version of the image on Twitter, seen above.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft captures image of Earth from 71 million miles away

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which achieved a record orbit at asteroid Bennu earlier this month, has returned an image that, at first glance, is unremarkable. The photo, below, features two bright dots — the larger one on the right is Bennu, and the smaller one on the left is Earth and the moon as seen from a distance of 114 million kilometers / 71 million miles.

The image was captured by OSIRIS-REx’s black and white NavCam1 camera on December 19, 2018, according to the Bennu mission website. The asteroid’s brightness is due to the image’s five second exposure time, which was long enough to make both the Earth and moon visible.

The OSIRIS-REx probe has been tasked with exploring Bennu, a large asteroid located around 70 million miles from Earth. On December 31, OSIRIS-REx became the first spacecraft to successfully orbit an object as small as Bennu, where it will remain before briefly touching down in 2020 to acquire a small sample.

The spacecraft has returned a number of images to its team on Earth, including close-up shots of the asteroid’s rocky surface. The latest image joins the iconic Pale Blue Dot photo as a rare example of space photography that puts Earth’s tiny place in the universe into perspective. Future images from OSIRIS-REx will be shared in the mission’s Gallery.

Noa N7 smartphone captures 80MP images with ‘high-resolution mode’

Lesser known Croatian brand Noa might not be the first manufacturer that springs to mind when you think about mobile photography, but the company will be launching a new mid-range device with some very interesting imaging features at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of this month.

The Noa N7 comes with a dual-camera setup that features two 16MP Sony IMX298 1/2.8″ image sensors. At this point, there’s no further detail on how the two cameras play together, but we would assume there will be a shallow depth-of-field simulation mode and some kind of computational merging for better detail and reduced noise.

What the camera will definitely feature, however, is a 80MP high-resolution mode, presumably using image data from both lenses in combination with a pixel-shift technology. Looking at the demo video below, it seems the mode will require a tripod, but that’s still an attractive option for landscape or architectural photography who require maximum detail.

Main camera aside, the phone will offer a ceramic casing, Face-ID unlocking via the front camera, DTS stereo sound and an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 chipset. Images can be framed and viewed on a 5.7-inch display with 18:9 aspect ratio, and HD+ resolution.

If the 80MP mode has sparked your interest, the Noa N7 might be worth a closer look. Fortunately, the high pixel count won’t come with an expensive price tag—Noa says the N7 will retail for about 250 EUR ($ US 310) in Europe. This 2018 ‘ecosystem map’ captures the whole photo industry in one massive infographic

Photolemur, the makers of an AI-powered image editor, have put quite some time and effort into creating a comprehensive “Market Map of the Digital Photo Industry” that includes all sorts of brands, manufacturers, publications and other organizations that are involved in the industry in some shape or form.

“The aim of this initiative is to become the gate to the digital photo industry and to help photographers, new companies, VCs, entrepreneurs, journalists, and bloggers to understand who the major players in the world’s digital photo industry are,” writes Photolemur in the accompanying text. “Note that some companies work in more than one segment so we decided to link them only to their primary segment on the map.”

In the map you’ll find anything from camera and lens manufacturers, to Raw image processors, to providers of online education services, all neatly sorted and categorized. The company says it is planning to update the market map over time, adding more entries to existing categories as well as creating entirely new categories.

On the market map website you can contact Photolemur via an email link if you think they’ve missed out an important player in the industry. If you submit your name and email address, you can also download the map as an Excel file or high-resolution PDF.

The Hasselblad H6D-400c multi-shot captures insane 400MP images

Swedish medium format manufacturer Hasselblad has introduced its next-generation multi-shot body, building a monster that outputs 400MP images.

Following in the footsteps of the company’s H6D-100c, the H6D-400c MS uses sensor-shift technology to combine up to six exposures into a single monster image measuring 23200 x 17400 pixels. If you work to the principle that 300ppi is ‘”photo-quality”, that means you can create a print of over 77x58in.

The final image from the 6-shot process is a 16-bit TIFF that weighs 2.3GB.

The camera is aimed at the art digitizing market and other industries that require super-resolution and accurate color.

The H6D-400c MS gathers color information by shifting the sensor by a pixel at a time in a four-by-four grid, and recording four images with the red, green and blue filters over-lapping to produce RGBG at every pixel. The sensor is then returned to the normal position before being shifted half a pixel horizontally and then half a pixel vertically to record extra resolution via these two extra images.

The system is similar to that used by companies like Olympus and Panasonic, except that these manufacturers use their ‘floating’ 5-axis sensor image stabilization technology to manipulate the sensor into position. Hasselblad’s system uses a machined metal block with a track milled into it that the sensor is shifted along.

This creates a system that’s more rigid, to ensure the sensor movements are absolutely parallel and precise every single time. When not being used in multi-shot mode, the camera acts just like a H6D-100c, so it can be used normally too.

The H6D-400c MS will begin shipping in March, but pre-orders are being accepted immediately. The price of the camera will be $ 47,995 (€39,999 / £36,250 / RMB 319,999 / JPY 5,391,380 excluding VAT). If that’s a little out of your budget, you will be able to rent it directly from Hasselblad for about $ 480 (€400 / £360) per day, with discounts available for longer-term agreements.

YI’s Horizon VR180 captures stereoscopic 3D stills and videos at 5.7K

YI Technology, in partnership with Google’s VR team, has announced its Horizon VR180 stereoscopic 3D camera. The VR180 takes advantage of Google’s format of the same name, which allows for viewing of 180° material on popular VR headsets, such as the Daydream, Cardboard and Playstation VR.

The VR180 can capture video and stills at 5.7K/30p with the push of its single record button, with instant stitching and live streaming capability. It has a 2.2″ LCD touchscreen, Type-C USB port, and 4 microphones with noise reduction. The VR180 can be accessed using Google’s VR180 app.

GoPro Fusion makes official debut, captures 5.2K spherical video

GoPro’s pro-grade spherical camera has been in the works for a while now, but today Fusion gets its official debut today. It’s capable of 5.2K/30p and 3K/60p spherical video capture, in addition to 18MP spherical stills. It touts gimbal-like stabilization without a gimbal, and provides a feature GoPro calls OverCapture to create tradition fixed perspective video from 360-degree footage.

It’s not quite as rugged as its Hero siblings, but Fusion is waterproof to 5m/16ft. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity are included and the camera is compatible with the existing GoPro app. It’s up for pre-order now to US, UK, European and Canadian customers for $ 700.

Master drone pilot captures video while flying around, inside, and under a moving train

Absolutely, positively never try this yourself. By all accounts, this flight was highly illegal and DPReview in no way condones this activity.


If you’re at all plugged into the world of drone news, you’ve probably seen this video floating around the past week. Captured by master First Person View (FPV) drone pilot Paul Nurkkala, it shows his “flight of the year” in which he flies around, inside, onto, and under a moving train… barrel rolls included.

Nurkkala captured the video using his custom built drone, which is equipped with a GoPro Hero5 Session and piloted from afar using special FPV goggles.

The video has split the internet into two predictably conflicted camps. The first thinks it’s just the coolest footage to ever come out of a drone, because Nurkkala is clearly such a talented pilot. The second is infuriated that he would do something so obviously illegal, post the results online, and receive so much praise and adulation (and so many views… at last count his 5-day old YouTube video had accrued nearly 850,000 views).

No judgement if you find yourself both entertained and a little bit annoyed/angry while watching the video.

NASA Curiosity Rover captures rare photographs of clouds on Mars

Last month, NASA’s Curiosity Rover captured something (appropriately enough) curious in the Martian sky: clouds. Specifically, Curiosity snapped several sequences of “wispy, early-season clouds resembling Earth’s ice-crystal cirrus clouds” that NASA is calling “the most clearly visible so far” since the Rover landed 5 years and 5 days ago.

As NASA explains in a news release:

Researchers used Curiosity’s Navigation Camera (Navcam) to take two sets of eight images of the sky on an early Martian morning last month. For one set, the camera pointed nearly straight up. For the other, it pointed just above the southern horizon. Cloud movement was recorded in both and was made easier to see by image enhancement.

Each sequence of 8 images was enhanced and turned into an animated GIF:

Photographer duo captures incredibly creative architecture portraits

Artist duo Daniel Rueda and Anna Devis have one of the most creative, fun, not to mention OCD-friendly Instagram partnerships you’ll ever stumble across. They travel the world finding creative, strange and colorful architecture, and then come up with creative, strange and colorful ways to interact with it.

Surprisingly (or maybe not) Devis and Rueda are not photographers who love architecture, but architects who love photography. The architectural education gives them a better understanding and appreciation of the spaces they’re working with, while the photographer’s need to tell a story is what inspires them to insert themselves into each pictures as ‘characters.’

As Rueda explained in an interview with design website More with Less, in addition to lending a sense of scale, “the role of these characters in my pictures is to tell a story that goes beyond aesthetics. That is, it is not enough to just have an image that looks more or less beautiful; it has to tell something without the need of putting it into words.”

Devis and Rueda’s work is, plain and simple, a treat for the eyes. You can find many more creative shots like the ones above on Instagram at @drcuerda and @anniset.
