Apple upgrades its 27″ iMac with 10-gen Intel CPUs, new AMD GPUs and doubles RAM capacity

Apple announced at its all-virtual WWDC event this year that we would see another round of Intel-based computers before we start to see computers powered by its in-house chipsets. And now it’s here. Apple has announced an update for its 27” iMac, which may very well be the last Intel-based iMac for the foreseeable future. The update adds improved base-level storage options, more powerful CPU/GPU options, upgraded RAM capacity and improvements to the 5K Retina display.

The updated iMac shares the same external design as previous iMacs, with only one exception. In addition to the glossy glass screen that’s been standard on iMacs for the past decade, you can now choose a nano-texture matte glass option, a technology Apple first showed off in its Pro Display XDR. As its name suggests, this option reduces glare on the screen and should result in a better image in brighter environments. In addition to the matte glass, the display now features Apple’s True Tone technology for adapting the color balance based on the ambient lighting.

Moving inside the computer, Apple is now using 6-core and 8-core 10th-gen Intel CPUs across the entire lineup, with the option to upgrade to a 10-core option — the first time a 10-core CPU has been available inside an iMac. Apple has also increased the amount of memory the new iMacs can support. If you don’t mind paying the price, you can now max out your iMac with up to 128GB of RAM.

Apple has also updated the graphics capabilities of its new 27” iMac with AMD’s Radeon Pro 5000 series GPU. The base model starts with 6GB of GDDR6 of memory and has upgrade options going up to 16GB of GPU memory.

SSDs are now standard across the board, with the base model starting at 256GB of flash storage and the option to max out with an 8TB SSD. Apple has also added its higher-bandwidth T2 security chip, bringing it in line with the rest of Apple’s computer lineup.

Other improvements include an updated 1080p FaceTime camera, an improved ‘studio quality’ microphone system and better speakers. Apple is also making SSD storage standard across its 21.5” iMac lineup and the iMac Pro will come standard with the 10-core Intel Xeon processor that’s offered as an upgrade option in the new 27” iMac.

The base 27” iMac starts at $ 1,800 for a 3.1GHz 6-core 10th-gen Intel i5 processor, 8GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD storage and a Radeon Pro 5300 GPU with 6GB of memory. The nano-texture glass is available for an additional $ 500 and further CPU, GPU, RAM and storage upgrades can be made at various price increases.

Fujifilm plans to increase interchangeable lens production capacity as demand grows

Increased mirrorless digital camera demand has prompted Fujifilm to ramp up its interchangeable lens production capacity, the company has announced. New facilities at its existing Taiwa Factory in Miyagi prefecture, Japan will start in September, the ultimate goal being a 70% production capacity increase by 2020, the year when Fujifilm expects all of the new facilities to be fully operational.

Fujifilm reports that its annual interchangeable lens sales are growing by more than 20% per year. The company currently offers 36 interchangeable lenses for its X and G mounts, including its newly announced XF 8-16mm F2.8 ultra-wide zoom scheduled to launch in November.

The company revealed plans to install a large-scale cleanroom facility with a “cutting-edge” analyzer, as well as other facilities that will include AI-based optical adjustment technologies. The launch of these facilities, says Fujifilm, will increase lens production efficiency while maintaining a high level of quality. Fujifilm says the Taiwa Factory’s “Made in Japan” interchangeable lenses will be distributed globally.

Nimbus Data ExaDrive pushes SSD capacity record to 100TB

Only a few weeks ago Samsung set a new record for SSD-drive capacity with its latest 30TB model. The achievement didn’t stand for long; US company Nimbus Data just shot past Samsung’s benchmark with the launch of a gargantuan 100TB drive.

The company says the “ExaDrive DC series raises the bar in SSD power efficiency, density, and write endurance”. At a 85% lower claimed power consumption than the competition (0.1 Watts/TB) the new drive is the world’s most efficient SSD which, according to Nimbus, means a 42% reduction cost of ownership per terabyte.

With a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 2.5 million hours, or over 285 years, longevity of the drive should be ensured as well but the the ExaDrive’s selling point is of course capacity. According to the Nimbus press release the drive has “capacity to store 20 million songs, 20,000 HD movies, or 2,000 iPhones worth of data in a device small enough to fit in your back pocket.” As a photographer you’re unlikely to ever run out of space, even when shooting high-resolution Raw files or recording 4K video footage.

The ExaDrive DC100 comes with the same 3.5″ form factor, SATA interface and plug-and-play capability as most standard hard drives, allowing for easy installation. The ExaDrive DC100 will be available this summer. No pricing information has been provided yet but given it’s targeted at datacenter use the new drive likely won’t be cheap. This TCO advantage factors in the superior endurance, balanced read/write performance, power savings, cooling savings, rack space savings, component reduction, and lower refresh costs.

Integral unveils world’s first microSD card with 512GB capacity

It wasn’t too long ago that SanDisk launched the world’s biggest microSD card with a capacity of 400GB. Today, this record has been superseded by a UK company called Integral, which has unveiled what it says is the first shipping 512GB microSD memory card.

The card will work in any device that is compatible with the microSDXC standard—for example many Android mobile devices, drones, and some PCs—and offers a sustained sequential write speed of 10MB/s, which should be good enough for 4K video recording. Maximum speed is 80MB/s.

With half a Terabyte of storage space at your disposal, you really should be able to stop worrying about running out of memory, assuming you use a device with a microSD memory expansion slot.

The card is expected to be available from February, but no pricing information has been revealed yet. It’s fair to assume it won’t be cheap, however—Sandisk’s 400GB card still retails for around $ 250, and with an even higher capacity, the Integral is likely to tip the scales at $ 300 or more.

Seagate’s 12TB BarraCuda Pro is the fastest, highest capacity desktop drive on the market

As storage needs grow with the rise of VR content and ubiquity of 4K video, it looks like more and more hard drive options are becoming available that boast better reliability and performance at even bigger capacities. Case in point: Seagate has just announced new 12TB versions of its IronWolf, IronWolf Pro, and BarraCuda Pro hard drives, following hot on the heels of Western Digital’s recent 12TB drive launch.

These new Seagate drives come in a 3.5-inch form factor, with the BarraCuda Pro drive designed for desktop use, while both IronWolf drives are designed for Network-attached Storage (NAS) devices.

According to Seagate, the new 7200rpm 12TB BarraCuda Pro is “the fastest, highest-capacity and most reliable hard drive for desktop computing available on the market today.” The inclusion of Intel Optane non-volatile memory offers responsiveness and performance akin to that of an SSD, as well as twice the load and boot speeds compared to standard drives. This tech allows the drive to offer sustained data transfer rates of 250MB/s and burst data speeds up to 6Gb/s.

The IronWolf drives, meanwhile, are designed for creative professionals and others who prefer centralizing data onto a NAS unit. Both of the new 12TB drives support Seagate’s IronWolf Health Management software, which is designed for use with the Asustor NAS, Synology DiskStation NAS, and QNAP NAS units and helps to protect data with ‘prevention, intervention, and recovery’ solutions.

The IronWolf 12TB drive has a sustained data transfer rate of 210MB/s and the IronWolf Pro 12TB has a sustained transfer rate of 250MB/s. Both the IronWolf and IronWolf Pro 12TB HDDs are listed on Newegg for $ 470 and $ 540, respectively. Unfortunately, the ‘world’s fastest’ of the bunch, the BarraCuda Pro 12TB drive, isn’t currently listed, but you can probably expect a price north of $ 600.

SanDisk unveils world’s largest microSDXC card with 400GB capacity

As long as your device features a microSD-slot, there are now no excuses for running out of storage. Today, Western Digital introduced what is currently the largest capacity microSD memory card in the world: the SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card with a whopping 400GB of storage space.

Western Digital has managed to double the capacity of its current high-end models by leveraging its proprietary memory technology, design and production processes, allowing the die to store even more data in an unchanged form factor.

The company says users will be able to transfer files with 100 MB/s speed—which equals approximately 1,200 photos per minute—or fill the card with up to 40 hours of video in Full-HD resolution. The SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I comes with a 10-year warranty and is available now in Europe for 250 Euros (approximately $ 295). No information on US-pricing has been released yet.

SanDisk announces 256GB microSDXC card and ‘world’s fastest, highest capacity’ USB flash drive

SanDisk has unveiled its new 256GB Ultra microSDXC UHS-I Premium Edition card. Meeting A1 performance standards, it’s designed to expand smartphone storage for photos and videos as well as provide space to store and run apps. It’s said to achieve transfer speeds ranging up to 95MB/s. At this capacity, the card is able to store up to 24 hours of 1080p Full HD video.

The A1 performance standard means this microSD card can handle random read input-output access per second, also called IOPS, of 1,500, as well as a write IOPS of 500. As such, SanDisk says this card is suitable for handling in-app permissions, graphics and audio, and save profiles on a smartphone. The A1 spec is particularly useful in in light of Android Marshmallow 6’s option for storing and launching apps from the microSD card.

SanDisk also announced a 256GB USB 3.1 solid state flash drive. Claimed to be the world’s fastest, highest capacity drive, it offers read speeds up to 420MB/s and write speeds up to 380MB/s. SanDisk claims that’s fast enough to transfer an entire full-length 4K movie to the drive in 15 seconds.

The new Ultra microSDXC Premium Edition card will be available globally later this month for $ 199. The 256GB SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.1 drive arrives at the same time, and will sell for $ 179 through Best Buy and Amazon.

Seagate 5TB Backup Plus Portable is ‘world’s largest capacity’ mobile storage drive

Seagate has introduced the 5TB Backup Plus Portable, calling it the world’s largest capacity portable external storage drive. The Backup Plus Portable features the BarraCuda 5TB internal drive in a 20.5mm-thick aluminum case; it supports both macOS (with an NTFS driver) and Windows with USB 3.0 connectivity.

Seagate announced the BarraCuda internal hard drive last month, and lists the 5TB model with data transfer speeds up to 140MB/s. At this capacity, the drive can store up to 600 hours of HD video, according to Seagate. The new Backup Plus offering will be available later this month in red, black, blue, and silver color options for $ 190.

At the Flash Memory Summit conference Seagate has today announced a 60TB solid-state-drive (SSD), the largest capacity SSD at this point in time. Seagate say the driver has four times the capacity and twice the density of the next largest competing unit and could store approximately 12,000 DVD-quality movies or 400 million photos.

Thanks to its enterprise HDD 3.5-inch form factor, swapping out and connecting drives is very easy, increasing data accessibility in data centers that have to estimate short term versus long term data accessibility and storage needs. And thanks to its flexible architecture, it also provides a way for data centers to easily grow from the current 60TB capacity to 100TB of data or more in the future, using the same form factor. 

The bad news is that the Seagate 60TB SSD is currently only available for demonstration purposes and will only make its debut some time in 2017. So you’ll have to look for an intermediate solution if you current image storage is running out of capacity. Seagate has not given any information on pricing yet but says the drive will represent the lowest current cost per GB for flash memory once it is available.

Sandisk launches 128GB capacity memory stick with USB-C and A connections

Memory manufacturer SanDisk has announced a new series of portable flash drives that feature a retractable, reversible connector that allows users to pair the stick with both USB Type-C and Type-A devices. The company suggests the dual compatibility of the Ultra Dual Drive USB Type-C will make it easier for smartphone users to transfer images and data from the phone to a computer, as well as offering a solution for expanding the storage memory of the device.

SanDisk claims the USB sticks have a maximum read speed of 150MB per second but says that the write speed is dependent on the device it is connected to. Android users can download the SanDisk Memory Zone app that features a convenient interface for transferring files between the phone and the external storage areas. The flash drives come in capacities from 16GB to 128GB and have a five year warrantee.
