Can’t Stop the Music: Submerged Turntable Plays Perfectly

15 Feb

Submerged Records 1

What will become of all that humans have created when we’re no longer on the planet to preserve it? This project by artist Evan Holm is both a nod to the grief that the mere thought of losing so much art, architecture, music and other culturally significant creations can incite, and hope for a new beginning. ‘Submerged Turntables’ play music perfectly even when placed underwater, spinning in a black pool.

Submerged Records 2

Watching the record swirl in the water is an eerie sight, powerfully evoking visuals of the monster floods we’ve watched wipe out human settlements in epic disaster movies as well as in real life. The knob to control the record player is built into a branch that hangs over the pool. The video below shows the process of setting up the installation.

Submerged Records 3

“There will be a time when all tracings of human culture will dissolve back into the soil under the slow crush of the unfolding universe,” says Holm. “The pool, black and depthless, represents loss, represents mystery and represents the collective subconscious of the human race. By placing these records underneath the dark and obscure surface of the pool, I am enacting a small moment of remorse towards this loss.”

Submerged Records 4

“In the end however this is an optimistic sculpture, for just after that moment of submergence; tone, melody and ultimately song is pulled back out of the pool, past the veil of the subconscious, out from under the crush of time, and back into a living and breathing realm. When I pe

DPReview editor Barnaby Britton spent his weekend taking pictures on the new Apple iPhone 5s, which among other refinements features a new camera, larger sensor, built-in filter effects and a unique two-color flash. It also offers an improved panorama mode with adaptive ‘live’ metering across the frame. In this short article he explains why even if you don’t have any interest in the new iPhone, you should definitely pay attention to the iPhone 5s’ panorama feature.

Stair Rover Goes Where Other Skateboards Can’t

11 Jul

Stair Rover Skateboard Design 1

An eight-wheel mechanism allows the unusual Stair-Rover skateboard to descend flights of steps the way conventional skateboards never could. Designed by Po-Chih Lai, the wheel system mounts to a longboard and flexes to follow the contours of stairs and ride up curbs.

Stair Rover Skateboard 3

In addition to the original design, which fits wood boards, Lai offers an upgraded Pro version with a fiberglass deck and black components. The chassis goes to work on rough surfaces like cobblestones or uneven paving to reduce impact and prevent falls.

Stair Rover Skateboard 2

Stair Rover Skateboard 5

“Reach the top of a flight of stairs and simply keep going – let gravity and the patent-pending V-frame design do the rest. The wheels bounce up and down independently and conform to the shape of each step. It’s a balancing act that gives the board its crab-like scuttle and gives you a butter-smooth ride to the bottom.”

Stair Rover Skateboard 4

A new video of the board in action shows it navigating London landmarks like the Royal Albert Hall, Emirates Stadium and the Millennium Bridge. Currently up on Kickstarter, the project is seeking £50,000 in funding to bring the board into production. Backers donating at a certain level are pre-ordering a board before it’s available to the general public.

Swirl World: 9 Cool McFlurry Flavors You Can’t Get Here

23 Jun

[ By Steve in Culture & Cuisine & Global. ]

McDonald's McFlurry international
McDonald’s McFlurry is the coolest thing on the menu but not all McMenus are created equal. Take these 9 cool McFlurry flavors… oops, our bad, you can’t!

Durian Crunch McFlurry – Singapore

McDonald’s is a proven master at thinking global while acting local and if you don’t believe that, feast your eyes (and nose) on the Durian Crunch McFlurry. This limited edition, Singapore-only dessert treat takes vanilla soft-serve ice cream blended with durian syrup, adds a crunchy topping, and is served in a squared off frosted plastic container.

You’ll pay $ 2.80 SG (about $ 2.24 US) for each helping dished out from any of the innumerable McDonald’s Dessert Kiosk outlets scattered all across the city. That is, of course, if you love durian… there’s no middle ground when it comes to the “(stin)king of fruits.” Try bringing your Durian Crunch McFlurry into certain hotels or onto Singapore Mass Rapid Transit trains? That just might cost you a caning.

Bubblegum Squash McFlurry – Australia & New Zealand

Sweet-toothed fast-foodies fear not, the Bubblegum Squash McFlurry does NOT contain squash in any way, shape or form so Aussie & Kiwi parents can forget about sneaking some veggies into their children’s diets. In fact, the word “diet” should not be allowed anywhere near this pink, white & blue confection concoction made from bubblegum flavored syrup and marshmallows mixed into vanilla soft-serve ice cream.

Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry – Canada, UK & Ireland

You might think the McFlurry is as all-American as Mom’s apple pie but it actually originated in Canada: a McDonald’s franchise store in Bathurst, New-Brunswick first introduced the spoon-blended dessert in 1997. Canada continues to refine a distinct McFlurry identity with the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry. Coinciding with the appearance of its main flavoring feature, the Cadbury Creme Egg, the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry is usually available in most Canadian, British and Irish McDonald’s stores during the annual run-up to Easter.

Not all stores in all regions add the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry to their menus, which can be frustrating to devotees of the sickly sweet chocolate-shelled fondant orbs in all their various permutations. How does one know they’re such a devotee? Taking selfies with your long-sought sweet treat in foreign locales like London (England or Ontario) is a pretty good indication.

Killer Tips for Photographing the Moon That You Can’t Pass Up

17 Jun

The moon has long been a source of deep fascination for mankind. As long as anyone can remember, human beings have stared up into its source of light in the pitch black of night and wondered about it. Some have even gone a bit batty thanks to the moon’s effects (at least, some would have you believe). But hardcore photographers Continue Reading

05 Jun

05PHOTOGRAPHER-popup.jpg

For nearly forty years, photographer D. James Dee has documented artwork and installations for seminal artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schanbel and prominent New York City galleries. He’s now closing up shop and faces the prospect of finding a home for roughly 250,000 color slides and negatives that chronicle the explosive growth of the Soho art scene of the 70s, 80s and 90s. So far he’s found no takers. Is this trove of recent art history headed for the dumpster? Click through to read more. (via The New York Times)

Can’t Be Shaved: 12 Abandoned Barber Shops

12 May

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

abandoned barber shops
This abandoned barber shop triple-quartet collectively echoes with the metallic chattering of honed clippers tempered by hazy undertones of warm conversation.

Losing Your Head

The abandoned Richardson’s Barber Shop in Yanceyville, North Carolina, appealed to potential customers by displaying the unique motto “We need your head in our business” on the outside wall. Kudos to roving photographer Adam Prince for snapping the shop in a favorable light, or at least in favorable lighting.

Evidently the snappy slogan wasn’t the best way to get ahead IN business because by the fall of 2005, Richardson’s was OUT of business. On the bright side, though the ex-clip joint is looking faded and forlorn these days the circus flyers marring its front picture window in the autumn 2005 image above weren’t a permanent addition.

Rest In La Paz

The conquista-door has long slammed shut at the eerily exquisite La Paz Peluqueria de Caballeros (Gentlemen’s Hairdresser) shop sleepily snuggled in a small southern Spanish city. Shaded by gently waving palm trees and lit by a lone wrought iron lantern, the soot-stained stucco-walled shop exudes an aura of timeless style highlighted by the rich patina coating the frame of its cozy, glassed-in, second floor balcony.

A REALLY Close Shave

The well-preserved ghost town of Bannack, Montana, had a good run: it was founded in 1862 and finally abandoned in the 1970s. The former gold-mining town and territorial capitol boasted a population of around 10,000 and at least four saloons at its peak; one of which featured a one-seat barber shop in a front corner.

Legend has it that occasionally gunfights would break out among the drinkers, giving whomever was enjoying a trim at the time a close shave without the benefit of razor or cream. A tip of the hat goes to Flickr user Chuck_893 for his snap of the weather-beaten barber chair above

The Journey: It’s What You Can’t See That Will Thrill You

02 Mar

Photography is about a lot of things and other than “light” I’d say the “journey” is the most important. The fantastic thing about photography is that one’s mastery of the medium & artistic vision is a journey as much as the quest for each photo. Just as you never know what is over the next hill to photograph you never know how your view of the world might evolve. In both regards it pays to cherish the journey.
