FeiyuTech announces four new gimbals for mirrorless cameras, phones and action cams

12 Dec
Left to right, the Vimble 2A, the G6 Max and the AK2000S

Chinese gimbal manufacturer FeiyuTech has released details of four new devices aimed at a range of photographers using smartphones, mirrorless cameras, DSLRs and those wanting to shoot timelapse sequences. The four are the Feiyu AK2000S, the Feiyu QING, the Feiyu G6 Max and the Feiyu Vimble 2.

The Vimble V2 is a lightweight gimbal that comes in two versions, the 2A for action cams and the 2S for smartphones. The 2S is an update of an existing gimbal, but the Vimble 2A is completely new. It has an extendable handle that contains a telescopic section to increase the length of the handle by 18cm. The device weighs 277g, which the company says makes it the lightest action cam gimbal on the market. Controlled via the handle or a smartphone app, the Vimble 2A is designed to work with the GoPro5, 6 and 7 models and offers users a quick release clamp for these cameras.

Those with mid-sized mirrorless cameras are the target of the Feiyu G6 Max, with its 1.2kg capacity. A system of flexible heads allow the G6 Max to also be used with action cams, compacts and smartphones, and a new design means the gimbal is both smaller and lighter than the previous G6 Plus. Each arm on the new model has a motor lock, the device’s LCD screen is enlarged and the 9 shooting modes can be controlled directly from the handle as well as via the app.

The Feiyu AK2000S is designed for camera kits weighing up to 2.2kg/4.85lb and can control and power certain guest cameras. It uses 16.8v high torsion brushless motors to deal with the weight and now offers quicker and smoother response to instructions. The company claims motor performance is improved by 400%, and that a single charge will deliver 14 hours of operation.

The biggest of the new gimbals is the QING, which is really designed to sit on a tripod or slider to function as a complex timelapse and panoramic controller. Feiyu calls it a Motion Control Device and it can handle up to 3.5kg of kit and weighs 1.3kg itself. A detectable handle can be used as a remote controller but can also attach to the base of the QING so that it can be used as a regular gimbal. The QING comes with a 2200mAh battery to allow it to operate over long periods during timelapse sequences.

The QING costs $ 900, the AK2000S is $ 450, the G6 Max is $ 360 and the Vimble 2A and 2S are $ 127. For more information see the FeiyuTech website.

CAMS unveils new camera plates for small DSLRs and mirrorless cameras

02 Dec

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5930146630″,”galleryId”:”5930146630″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Following in the footsteps of its successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the Pro Camera plate system, accessory manufacturer CAMS is looking to the crowdfunding platform once more to create scaled down plates for smaller DSLR and CSC bodies. The company hopes to raise $ 20,000 to fund a project that it says brings a host of new features to the plate and sling strap system.

The new CAMS standard and Mini Plates are designed to fit smaller camera systems while still allowing access to the battery compartment door so batteries can be changed without having to remove the plate. The plates also have their own storage slots for a spare SD card and to hold the hex key that fits the plate to the camera.

Those using Arca-Swiss type tripod heads will be able to mount the plate directly onto their tripod, while a further thread in the base allows the plates to attach to a standard 1/4in-20 tripod screw.

Here’s a quick intro to the new plates from the Kickstarter campaign:

A sling strap comes as an optional accessory and connects to the plate via a quick-opening attachment, while a hand strap can be used with the smaller lug close to the camera’s handgrip. In addition to the usual neoprene strap, the company is now offering Minima webbing strap and a Pelle leather version.

Prices start from $ 50 for either plate with no strap or $ 65 with a Minima strap. For more details, visit the CAMS Kickstarter campaign page or the CAMS website.

Grip Gear introduces Movie Maker, a tiny slider for smartphones and action cams

30 Nov

Grip Gear, maker of the handheld smartphone stabilizer IndieSolo, has launched the Movie Maker: a portable, electronically driven slider built for smartphones, action cams and compact cameras.

Powered by AAA batteries or a separate power bank via USB, the Movie Maker includes a rail, motorized head and a clamp to accommodate most smartphones. Eight speeds can be utilized, as slow as 6mm/min up to 300mm/min to create slow motion, time-lapse or real-time stabilized panning shots.

Upon reaching the end of the track, the Movie Maker will automatically bounce back and move in the opposite direction. The motorized head can also be used separately from the rail to pan 360-degrees for panorama. It’s all designed to pack away into a compact kit that can fit into a camera bag or backpack.

The Movie Maker is available now on Amazon for a list price of $ 130.

Press release

Hollywood production tools arrive for smartphones.
Grip Gear launches The Movie Maker tool set

<GripGear. 31 Oct. 2016. For immediate release. > Smartphone movie tool kit company, Grip Gear has upped the ante in video production with the launch of Movie Maker: a set of miniature production tools that puts all the equipment a movie company might use to make a major Hollywood production into a tiny package that will help turn a smartphone into a full-blown movie making resource.

As smartphones become more and more capable, they are becoming one of the most important tools for creating video content for both brands and individuals. By 2019 video will account for almost 80 percent of all consumer Internet traffic. Even now, Facebook experiences 8 billion video views per day. But as video proliferates, standing out from the crowd becomes an increasing challenge.

The Movie Maker helps video makers move up into a new realm of production quality and creativity with gadgets like an 8-speed electronic tracking slider, a 360º panoramic function and suction cups to hold your phone in impossible positions for the most amazing shots.

Co-founder Rhys Bradley said: “As a former grip in the film industry, I’ve long had a vision of creating a film set experience in a smaller format for smartphones and other small cams. With the Movie Maker, smartphone users can now create beautiful movie quality footage that used to take massive pieces of expensive film making equipment with a set of highly portable tools that can fit in a camera bag!”

Co-founder Dean Tzembelikos said: “After 3 years of development and meticulous attention to detail and quality we are proud to launch the Movie Maker. It will enhance the video making experience and bring out the creative juices in everyone. This is a genuine breakthrough in putting movie making into the everyone’s hands”

The Movie Maker will shortly be available on Amazon as well as at www.gripgear.com and cost USD $ 129.

A new crowdfunding project on Kickstarter is looking to raise funding for the production and distribution of the GekkoGum camera support. GekkoGum is made from an odorless and grease-free rubber compound that is malleable and does not stick to your fingers but, according to its makers, has a retaining force comparable to gecko feet. This means you can use it to attach your action camera or smartphone to any surface or object within a matter of seconds. It won’t stick to silicone though.

GekkoGum comes in a storage pouch and can be cleaned with water to remove superficial dirt. It does not shrink or become brittle over time and keeps its characteristics for many years. The recommended maximum camera weight is 200 grams which includes most common action cams and smartphones. You can now secure a GekkoGum by pledging €15 (approximately $ 16) on the project’s Kickstarter page. Shipping is envisaged for January 2017.

Would you feel comfortable sticking an expensive device to a wall using GekkoGum? Let us know in the comments.

GoPro and Periscope partnership enables live broadcasting from Hero4 action cams

27 Jan

Live-streamed content is about to get a little more extreme as action cam maker GoPro and live-broadcasting video app Periscope have announced a partnership. Starting today, Periscope users can broadcast live from GoPro’s Hero4 Black and Silver models. With Periscope’s iOS app, users can switch between the camera on their mobile device and a GoPro, enabling a two-camera setup. An iPhone 5s, 6 or 6+ running iOS 8.2 is required. If you’ve got all the necessary equipment, download the latest version of the iOS app to start broadcasting from your GoPro.

Press release:

GOPRO GOES LIVE WITH PERISCOPE

Live story-telling just got more immersive! Beginning today, Periscope users can now broadcast live directly from their GoPro HERO4 Black or Silver camera. This innovative integration allows the 10+ million Periscope users to toggle between broadcasting from their iPhone’s camera to their GoPro directly from the phone screen with the simple touch of a button.

Much like a production switchboard, you can use your Periscope interface to flip between the two different camera angles, so even if your broadcast is lacking that heart-pounding action only GoPro can capture, you can still set up a two-camera shot for more dynamic story telling in real time. And yes, your GoPro will still record locally on the micro SD card even while broadcasting through Periscope.

Periscope lets you see what’s happening in the world right now, unedited and unfiltered. Integrating GoPro offers Periscope broadcasters a new tool to help tell their stories more creatively, while GoPro content creators now have a new platform and audience with Periscope and Twitter to share their experiences, live!

Live broadcasts from GoPro can now be shared directly to Twitter’s home timeline, enabling GoPro users and Periscope broadcasters to expand their reach to their Twitter fan base. This helps broadcasters cultivate new fans and interact with their audience right from their broadcasts in their home timeline, even after the live broadcast is done.

Pablo Jablonski, Periscope iOS Engineer said, “As a skier myself, I’ve always loved extreme sports, and I love how GoPro can show us all of the crazy things these athletes can do. As an iOS engineer on Periscope, bringing these two technologies together has been a the fulfillment of a longtime personal wish. Starting with X Games and moving forward, Periscope and GoPro together will bring these LIVE moments to all the fans.”

*Broadcast functionality is currently only available on iOS, but users will be able to view GoPro broadcasts from any platform.

*Compatible with iPhone 5s, 6 and 6+ with iOS 8.2

*Integration for use with GoPro HERO4 Black and Silver models

CAMS wants to change how you carry your camera with new ‘Pro’ camera and lens plates

06 Sep

Delaware-based company CAMS is raising money to create a range of mounting plates for DSLR users to carry their gear from a mount on the bottom, rather than the top of the camera. The low-profile CAMS Pro Camera Plate and Lens Plate attach to the tripod screws on the bottom of your camera (and lenses with a tripod collar) and provide a firm mounting point for the company’s quick-release neoprene straps, allowing your gear to be carried comfortably at hip level, ready to be brought quickly into the shooting position. Read more

A new BBC documentary uses tiny disguised cameras to take an intimate look at the lives of penguins. Wildlife producer John Downer and his team shot ‘Penguins: Spy in the Huddle’ with fifty ‘spy cameras’ disguised as rocks, eggs and even penguins themselves. The team shot footage of Emperor penguins in Antarctica, Rockhopper penguins on the Falkland Islands and Humboldt penguins in the Atacama Desert of Peru. Click through for photos, video and more information about the cameras.
