Craft brewery partners with Kodak to create a beer that doubles as film developer

Delaware craft brewery Dogfish Head has teamed up with Kodak to create SuperEIGHT, an analog-inspired Super Gose beer designed specifically to develop film.

Sam Calagione, founder and CEO of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, was recording an episode of The Kodakery, a podcast created by Kodak, when he learned that with the right levels of acidity and vitamin C, it would be possible to create a beer capable of developing film. Coincidentally enough, the research and development team at Dogfish was already working on a beer with properties that would align perfectly with those needed for developing film, and so SuperEIGHT was born.

After further developing the ‘super-refreshing, sessionable Super Gose,’ the Dogfish Head team sent a few batches over to Kodak for testing and sure enough, it worked. The resulting footage, seen in sample footage above, isn’t nearly as impressive as dedicated developers, but for a beer we’d say it’s pretty darn impressive. Kodak and Dogfish Head even shared a recipe for the development, which can be downloaded and printed off.

As for the beer itself, SuperEIGHT has an alcohol content of 5.3% and ‘is made with eight heroic ingredients including prickly pear, mango, boysenberry, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, kiwi juices and a touch of quinoa, along with an ample addition of Hawaiian sea salt.’

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery will start shipping six packs of 355ml (12 fl oz) cans in April 2019.

Preset Brewery drag-and-drop tool converts Lightroom presets for Photoshop

An application for macOS 10.10+ called Preset Brewery makes it possible to convert Lightroom presets into Camera Raw presets for use in Photoshop by simply dragging and dropping them—it really doesn’t get any simpler than that.

Preset Brewery was recently updated to version 1.1, which adds support for exporting the presets directly into Camera Raw so that they’re immediately available; however, the option remains to save the converted presets into the folder where the Lightroom presets are located.

Preset Brewery was created by developer Adam Bardon, who tells Fstoppers that a future update will add support for batch processing presets. Unfortunately, the application is not available for Windows, but Mac users can purchase Preset Brewery through the company’s website for $ 7.90 USD.

World’s Only Light Art Museum is in an Underground Brewery

Deep within the cooling and storage cellars of the former Linden brewery in the German city of Unna, darkened tunnels house the eerily glowing exhibitions of the world’s first and only light art museum. Established in 2001, the Centre for International Light Art is home to eleven sprawling installations within its 8,200 square feet, including Olafur Eliasson’s The Reflective Corridor, a 33-foot-high waterfall of light. Each was created specifically for this unique subterranean space.

Director John Jaspers describes the featured artists, including James Turrell and Joseph Kosuth, as “the Rembrandts and van Goghs of light art.” Their creations range from Keith Sonnier’s light graffiti rendered palpable in three-dimensional space via neon tubes, entitled ‘Tunnel of Tears,’ to Turrell’s surreal oculus entitled ‘Third Breath.’

Each exhibit interacts with the stark, aging surfaces within the 167-year-old complex, which was formerly just one of many industrial ruins found within Germany’s coal center. The little-known museum attracts only about 25,000 visitors per year, owing partially to the fact that local laws require limited-capacity guided tours due to emergency evacuation concerns.

That could change as the museum gains more recognition internationally, especially with its first annual international Light Art Award competition, which aims to promote artists working in the field of light art. Beer Bath: Underground Brewery Converted to Thermal Spa

Lounge in large wooden vats that once contained gallons upon gallons of beer, gazing up at the original stone arches in subterranean vaulted chambers. The Hürlimann Brewery in Zurich, built in 1836, has been transformed into a hotel and thermal spa with naturally heated water from a nearby spring.

Guests don’t actually bathe in beer here (there are other places to do that) but they get to enjoy the next best thing in spacious hot tubs made from the reclaimed barrels. The clean lines of wood and steel in the new construction contrast with, yet complement the aged stone architecture of the original facility.

Enclosed tiled rooms offer large pools in which to lay on your back and float, and the places to soak extend all the way up to the hotel’s rooftop, with heated pools looking out onto the city of Zurich.
