‘Blank Books’ Project is Rebuilding Burned Library in Baghdad

A lone artist is on a mission to restore some of the 70,000 books from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad that were reduced to ash during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. As chaos mounted, looters broke in set the library on fire, burning it to the ground.

Students at the school still lack replacements over a decade later, which led Wafaa Bilal (an Iraqi-born artist living in New York City) to propose Blank Books, a program designed to bring in book donations, in turn to be shipped in sets to the Iraqi capital.

This combination art, awareness and shelf-stocking project works essentially like this: blank books are created and put on shelves at the Art Gallery of Windsor. When someone donates a book, a white blank is removed and given to the donor as a symbol of the void they helped fill.

While the university shared a wishlist, they also welcome books from personal collections in any of the following categories: Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Radio, TV, Film, Music, Art Education, Industrial Design, Printing, Textiles, Calligraphy, Ornamentation.

The effort raised over $ 50,000 from a crowdfunding campaign, more than 5 times its target amount. The campaign worked like the installation: “The blank books will transform into colored books. I see this as a visualization of the reversal of destruction,” explains Bilal

As the shelves fill up with real books, Kickstarter backers and other donors receive the blank books as rewards as a “small reminder of their contribution.” You can read a more detailed interview with the artist on Hyperallergic or watch him speak on CNN.

More historical context on this effort from its creator: “During the Islamic Golden Age, Baghdad was home to the largest library in the world—the Bayt al-Hikma, or House of Wisdom. A Mongol siege in the 13th century laid waste to all the libraries of Baghdad, along with the House of Wisdom.”

“According to legend, the library was thrown into the Tigris River to create a bridge of books for the Mongolian army to cross. The pages bled ink into the river for seven days, after which the books were drained of knowledge.”

Fifth Wall: Artist Uses Aerial Urban Voids as Blank Backdrops

04 May

dky art new york'

In theater, the ‘fourth wall’ refers to the imaginary barrier between performers and their audience – the work of this illustrator evokes a kind of ‘fifth wall’, treating the sky above as invisible canvass for drawing upon.

Featured previously, French artist Thomas Lamadieu is back with new sets (SkyDesign and SkyFace) as well as fresh work in his SkyArt series from around the world, with illustrated shots taken and drawn from South Asia and Europe to the United States.

His recognizable style is pushed in new directions as he explores difference spaces and ways of filling them in, including some cartoons that breach the sky barrier and start interacting with infrastructure and spatial elements beyond the central area of focus.

In SkyFace, his portraits seem to push out from their frames, filling up their allotted space and then some, pulling back buildings to be revealed. In SkyDesign, his creations begin building out their own aerial infrastructure, crafting fanciful structures in the sky and manipulating the sun, moon, stars and other celestial elements seemingly at their fingertips.

High Security: 150 Creepy Cameras Installed on 1 Blank Wall

wall camera full picture

If you ever get that feeling you are being watched, well, for once it really is just your imagination – this fleet of surveillance cams is inactive but still startling to anyone caught by surprise. All they are missing is some George Orwell birthday party hats.

Street artist SpY, known for large and thought-provoking interventions, really lives up to his nom de plume in this installation set alongside a side street in Madrid, Spain.

Catching passers by off their guard, the neatly-arranged series features one hundred and fifty security cameras all pointed in roughly the same direction, all causing a cumulative sense of distinct unease that is only slightly irrational upon reflection.

While the prop cams are both inactive in practice and redundant in theory (since they all appear to be looking at the same spot), the effect of feeling watched by many eyes is still disproportionately unsettling.

The construction process was painstaking, involving a crane and the manual attachment and alignment of each camera along a carefully-planned grid.

Aside from their uniform focus, the consistent color and style of each unit adds another level of discomfort to the mix, like a marching army of emotionless robotic agents in some dystopian science fiction film.

Microsoft Publisher 2010 – Start Publisher with Just a Blank Document

15 Oct

Stop showing the New Template Gallery when starting Publisher 2010.

Upon starting Microsoft Publisher 2010 you are shown a “New Template Gallery” inside the Office 2010 Backstage View. From here you can open documents, access recent files, create new documents, and more in the left pane. In the right pane you can choose from various templates that may include business cards, menus, newsletters, and postcards.

While some appreciate this feature, others would rather start Publisher 2010 with just a blank document. Then they can begin work on a new publication, open an existing file, or later choose to access the templates by creating a new document. If you fall in this category, a simple configuration change achieves this effect:…

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Stop Ending Slide Shows with a Black, Blank Slide

02 Oct

Remove the black, blank slide that PowerPoint 2010 adds to the end of slideshows.

After displaying a slide show, Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 ends with a black, blank slide with the text “End of slide show, click to exit”. Presumably, the reason for this is that slide shows may be shown on a projector or larger monitor. After a slide show is finished, you can use the black slide to “cut the feed” so participants will not see the raw slides in PowerPoint as well as your Desktop, Taskbar, etc.

If you do not care about your participants seeing these things, you might find this ending slide annoying and wish to just exit straight from a slide show back into the PowerPoint application. To remove this ending slide, do the following:…
