Now it’s your turn. There are bikes everywhere in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. Go find some interesting ones and photograph them. Think outside the box of the usual shots, go macro, shoot a shadow, process it in black and white.

Invisible Bicycles: Tokyo’s High-Tech Underground Bike Parking

26 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

undergound bike copy

Sufficiently advanced science has been said to look like magic, like this subterranean cycle storage system – except in this case images and videos give you a peak at the secret workings below the surface.

amazing bike parking

On the space-starved streets of Tokyo, every bit of spare square footage counts, making the city’s investment in this complex-seeming solution a sensible way to tackle bike storage and theft.

Users simply walk their bike up, input a card or code, and let the machinery do the rest. The bikes are then taken underground, sorted and stored in a cylindrical shaft until needed, then available at a moment’s notice – bikers can be back on their rides faster than a valet at a fancy hotel could bring a car around.

underground car park variant

The Eco Cycle Anti-Seismic Underground Bicycle Park was designed and built by the engineers of Giken Seisakusho and can store up to 800 bicycles at a time. Its creators have also developed similar system designs that would work the same way but with cars.

The real wonder is not that it already exists in Japan, however, but that it has not been imported to other countries. There could be issues with water tables in certain cities, but the solution could also potentially be adapted to spaces like abandoned subway stations that already exist in others.

Flying Bikes & Pedaling Robots: 14 Futuristic Bicycles

18 Nov

[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

flying bike

All you need is an alien in a basket to make your biking experience just like a Spielberg film with this crazy flying bike and 13 other highly unusual, sometimes impractical bicycle designs. While some are just wild concepts, others represent truly innovative ideas for the future of cycling, from bending frames that function as built-in locks to extremely aerodynamic shapes and chainless drives.

XPloreAir Flying Bike

In a surreal scene straight out of ET, this bike can actually be flown right off the ground to an altitude of up to 4,000 feet. The XploreAir X1 Paravelo flying bicycle is a compact commuting bicycle that can be used like any other bike, or attached to a trailer equipped with a biofuel-powered fan. Get it going and the bike will lift into the air with the help of an attached fabric wing, traveling at up to 25 MPH for about three hours until the battery runs out.

Joules the Bicycle-Pedaling Robot

futuristic bicycles joules 1

If you want to bike around without actually doing any work, and look as conspicuous as possible in the process, here’s an idea that’s right up your alley: Joules, the bike-pedaling robot. Perched on the back of a tandem bike, Joules essentially performs the same function that an electric motor would. Says the creator, “Joules came from a challenge to build an electric tandem bicycle powered by actually pushing the pedals like a person. Fun kinetic design was part of the intent, practicality was not.”

Bending Bicycle Frame is Its Own Lock

futuristic bending bicycle 1

futuristic bending bicycle 2

Is this the ultimate theft-proof bicycle? Thanks to an innovative ratchet system, the frame of this bicycle can actually be bent to wrap around a lamp post so it can be secured without the need for a lock or a chain. Ratchet the frame tight again to make the bike rideable in an instant. The bending capability also makes it easy to store.

Air-Filtering Bicycle

futuristic air filter bike

In cities like Beijing, riding a bicycle is a popular and practical alternative to fighting monstrous traffic every day, but then you’re breathing in all of the exhaust from those millions of vehicles. Artist Matt Hope found an interesting if not very attractive solution: a 5,000v air filtration system with a filter that’s powered by your pedaling. The clean air that passes through the filter is then sent through a hose to a fighter pilot mask on the rider’s face.

StreetFlyer Harness Bicycle

futuristic streetflyer bicycle

Pretty much the opposite of ultra-compact urban bicycles, the StreetFlyer is a massive three-wheeled contraption that gives you the feeling of flying by suspending you from a lightweight frame using a harness. You strap yourself in, get a running start and then use swimming-like movements to pilot the thing.

The Contortionist Folding Bike

contortionist folding bike 1

The Contortionist Bike folds from full-size to the size of a single wheel in just twenty seconds. Once it’s folded, you can simply pull it behind you with the handlebars, freeing up your other hand.

Lunarctic Chainless Bicycle

futuristic bicycles lunarctic 1

futuristic bicycles lunarctic 2

The larger rear wheel and smaller front wheel of the unusual Lunarctic bicycle isn’t purely to give the bike an eye-catching look; it’s functional, too. The larger wheel provides stability, while the smaller one offers enhanced maneuverability. But the truly notable feature of this bike is the lack of a chain, making use of a belt drive instead.

25 Amazing Images of Bicycles

11 Jan

By Jonas Tana

Okay I admit it. I have an unnatural obsession with photographing three things:

  1. doors
  2. windows
  3. bicycles

But really, what photographer doesn’t? They make great subject matter and you can usually find something interesting about them. Waiting for just the right person to pass by that doorway, or a bird to land on the bike handlebars to complete the scene. Bikes make great shadows. People riding bikes make great panning subjects. The possibilities go on and on!

So today I found you some great images of bicycles, not only to prove that I’m not completely nuts, but to get you motivated. If it’s a winter wonderland of snow in your part of the world, and you long for spring as I do, maybe this will give you a taste of what’s to come.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Bicycles

11 Jan

Earlier today I admitted my dirty little secret. I am addicted to photographing bicycles. Yes, it is true!

By Kat…

I also shared some amazing bike images – check them out!

So you can probably guess what this week’s photography challenge will be, right? You guessed it – bicycles!

Get out there and photograph bikes of all kinds:

  • big ones
  • small ones
  • pedal bikes
  • motorbikes
  • scooters
  • with people
  • without people
  • moving
  • standing still
  • old rusty ones
  • shiny new ones

You get the idea. Bikes are great subjects because you can usually find them anywhere, at any time of the year. Even where I live, in two feet of snow, someone is crazy enough to ride their bike, or you can find one buried under the snow.

So no excuses accepted!

Here are a few ideas on how to approach this bicycle challenge:

  • look for shadows, so harsh sunlight contrasty lighting
  • look for shapes and use them in your composition
  • try your panning technique on some moving bikes
  • create abstract images
  • try some macro photography
  • create a silhouette, look for light behind the bike
  • if it has rained or is wet on the pavement, look for reflections
