Apple’s Smart Battery Cases for iPhone 11 models feature a dedicated camera button

Apple has announced its new Smart Battery Cases for its latest iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max devices, and hidden within them is a little surprise. Each of the Smart Battery Cases features a dedicated camera button that launches the Camera app.

According to the product description, the dedicated camera button will launch the Camera app regardless of whether the iPhone is locked or unlocked. ‘A quick press of the button takes a photo and a longer press captures a QuickTake video,’ reads the description.

This marks the first time any dedicated camera button has been found on a first-party case or battery case from Apple and further amplifies Apple’s emphasis on photography with its latest devices.

The Smart Battery Cases cost $ 129 for all iPhone 11 models and come in three colors: Black, White and Pink Sand. They are available to order now through Apple’s online store, physical Apple Stores and authorized Apple retailers.

The Shuttercase 2.0 is an iPhone camera case with battery grip, mechanical shutter button

Last year Shuttercase unsuccessfully attempted to collect funding for the original Shuttercase iPhone camera case. Now the company is back with a redesigned version that is called Shuttercase 2.0 and already available for purchase.

The Shuttercase 2.0 is aimed at iPhone photographers and movie makers who prefer the handling of a traditional camera over smartphone ergonomics for image and video capture. The case comes with a mechanical shutter button and a replaceable camera handle with a leatherette effect cover. The handle also contains a 3000mAh battery. In addition the case offers a mount for all current Moment smartphone lenses.

The modular design – lens mount, camera handle with battery, leatherette cover and thumb rest are all removable – allows you to use the battery pack when taking pictures with your iPhone and removing it and other components and leaving them at home for normal smartphone use. It also sets the Shuttercase apart from competitors such as the Pictar camera grip or battery packs from Mophie and others.

The Shuttercase 2.0 with Moment lens mount is now available for several iPhone models on the Shuttercase website for $ 78.99. An additional battery pack will set you back $ 28.99.

Nitecore announces ‘world’s first’ smart battery for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras

Nitecore has announced the NFZ100, the world’s first ‘smart battery’ for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, including the a7 III, a7R III and a9 systems.

Like most ‘smart’ electronics, the unique feature of the NFZ100 is the ability to manage and monitor the battery with an accompanying smartphone app. Nitecore NNERGY, as it’s called, is available to download for free on both Android and iOS devices.

Once installed and connected to the NFZ100, the NNERGY app will let you monitor the battery health, battery level, battery voltage and other real-time battery information. Nitecore even offers a dedicated ‘Storage Mode’ within the app that will discharge the battery to 70% to help maximize its lifespan if it won’t be in use for some time.

Individual batteries can be labelled with three-digit identifiers to ensure you can tell them apart inside the app. There is even an option to upgrade the firmware of the batteries as Nitecore further develops its technology. Yes, you read that right, you might soon need to update the firmware of your camera batteries, not unlike you do your camera itself.

The NFZ100 batteries feature 2,280 mAh capacity, which Nitecore estimates is good for 500 still photos when shooting with the Sony a9. Voltage is 7.2V, giving it a power rating of 16.4Wh.

Other features include overcharge protection, over-discharge protection, overcurrent protection, over voltage protection and short-circuit protection. The batteries weigh 82.5g (2.91oz) and measure 52 x 38.7 x 22.5mm (2.05 x 1.52 x 0.89in).

The Nitecore NFZ100 doesn’t appear to be available to purchase through any online retailers as of now and no current pricing information is available. DPReview has contacted Nitecore and will update this article with more information if we get a response.

Sony announces a new RX100 III Video Creator Kit with grip, SD card and additional battery

Sony has announced its new RX100 III Video Creator Kit, a product bundle that combines the RX100 III with Sony’s VCT-SGR1 grip, a 64GB SD card and an additional NP-BX1 battery.

Like most video creator kits, the RX100 III Video Creator Kit is designed to be an all-in-one solution for creators looking to get their foot in the door with a simple Full HD video setup.

At the heart of the RX100 III is Sony’s Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor, capable of recording 50Mbps 1080 / 60p video through the F1.8-2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm lens. Combine those specs with the 3-inch tilting screen and the ability to control both image capture and zoom with the VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip and you have yourself a solid vlogging setup.

Profoto’s B10 Plus flash with twice the power—and half the battery life—of its predecessor

Lighting manufacturer Profoto has launched a new version of its B10 miniature flash head that offers twice the output of the original model. The Profoto B10 Plus weighs only a pound more than the original and is just over two inches longer, but it provides a maximum output of 500Ws compared to the 250Ws of the B10.

The new head runs off the same lithium ion battery and accepts the same accessories as the B10, and has the same 2500 lumen modeling light with adjustable color to suit videographers working in a range of lighting conditions. In fact, all the features are the same including wireless radio control, TTL exposure and high speed sync with shutter speeds as short as 1/8000sec. The only other difference, of course, is the number of full power bursts achievable per charge – which drops from 400 in the B10 to 200 in the B10 Plus.

The Profoto B10 Plus weighs 1.9kg (4.2lbs), measures 10 x 23.5cm (3.9 x 9.3in) and costs $ 2095 / £1795. For more information see the Profoto website.

The Profoto A1X is an upgraded A1 with improved battery life, recycling times and more

Profoto has announced the A1X, an updated version of its A1 speedlight that’s improved in nearly every way.

The A1X isn’t quite a successor to the A1. Instead, it sits alongside the A1 as a more powerful alternative in the event the A1 just isn’t enough for your needs. In the words of Profoto, it has ‘a little more of everything.’

Specifically, the A1X has a more powerful internal battery that gets 450 full power flashes per charge compared to the 350 of the A1. It also features a 1 second recycling time compared to the 1.2 second recycling time of the A1, 20 wireless channels instead of 8 and a new display interface, similar to the one found on Profoto’s B10 light. The A1X is also available for Sony, whereas the A1 was limited to Canon and Nikon camera systems.

Aside from the above differences, the A1X is effectively identical to the A1. It features the signature round head, AirTTL and HSS, a magnetic click-on mount for Profoto’s optional Light Shaping Tools, an LED modeling light, built-in Air Remote capabilities and firmware update functionality. The device can be used both off-camera and on-camera, features flash durations from 1/800th to 1/20,000th and can work at distances up to 300m (1,000ft).

The A1X measures in at 75mm x 108mm x 165mm (3.0in x 4.3in x 6.5in) and weighs 560g (1.23lbs) with the included battery. Included with the flash unit is a Li-Ion battery, a USB Type-A to Micro B, a power cable, a battery charger, a flash stand, a dome diffuser, a bounce card and a dedicated bag for protecting the A1X.

Afidus ATL-200 camera can capture time-lapses for up to 80 days on battery power

A company called Afidus andbased out of Taiwan is demonstrating a relatively small cube-shaped camera called the ATL-200 at NAB 2019. Though it resembles an action camera, the ATL-200 is designed specifically to capture time-lapses; it can capture continuously for up to 30 days while on battery power.

The ATL-200 camera can be powered with four AA batteries or with a 5V micro USB cable charger. When operating off batteries, the camera operates for 45 days at a 1-minute capturing interval or 80 days at a 5-minute capturing interval, assuming it runs for 8 hours per day.

Operators have a number of capture options, including time-lapse intervals from 1 to 30 seconds, 1 to 10 minutes, and 1/4/24 hours, as well as a custom time option for using any interval duration. Continuous intervals can be set to 5, 10, and 15fps when recording at 1080p and 30fps at 720p.

ATL-200 supports multiple capture modes, including motion detection, stop motion, time-lapse, time-lapse and motion hybrid, and step video. The camera’s integrated motion sensor can detect moving objects located up to 25ft / 7.6m away. In addition to the camera’s autofocusing capabilities, operators can manually set the focus and zoom using the ATL-200’s companion mobile app.

Other features include a Sony Exmor Full HD 1080p sensor, IPX 64 weather-resistant construction, and a standard 1/4-20 tripod mount joined by four strap tabs. The camera is shipped with a 16GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card, but users can swap it out with other cards that have capacities up to 128GB. Time-lapses are saved in MP4 format. Afidus lists the ATL-200 on its website, but it only appears to be available for sale through TimeLapseCameras.com at this time, as noted by Newsshooter. The camera is priced at $ 389 USD; the next camera batch is expected to start shipping in late April.

Blackmagic announces a new battery grip for its Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Blackmagic Design has announced the impending arrival of the Pocket Camera Battery Grip, a new battery adapter for its Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC4K) that dramatically increases the battery life and adds a bit of extra grip for when handholding the 4K camera.

The Pocket Camera Battery Grip features a carbon fiber design with non-slip hand grips and a slide out tray that trades the BMPCC4K’s usual LP-e6 battery for two L-series batteries, increasing the battery life to up to two hours of continuous shooting on a single charge. When a charge is needed, users can charge the batteries inside the grip using the camera’s 12V DC connection.

As with other battery grips, the Pocket Camera Battery Grip attaches to the bottom of the BMPCC4K and screws into the integrated tripod mount using a tightening dial. The LP-E6 battery door on the BMPCC4K even gets a cozy place to hide in the grip so it doesn’t get misplaced for when you need to switch back.

The Blackmagic Pocket Camera Battery Grip will be available in August 2019 and is currently available to pre-order at B&H for $ 245 USD.

Hasselblad launches new cable release, battery charging hub for X1D

Hasselblad has introduced a cable release for its X1D medium format rangefinder-style camera alongside a new USB double battery charger. The Release Cord X is 90cm/36in long and triggers the shutter in single shot and continuous modes, and controls the camera via its microphone socket.

Dual slots on the Battery Charging Hub allow for two batteries to be charged simultaneously and for the camera to be powered via the USB C connector. The hub can be plugged into the AC power supply to charge batteries and the camera, or it can be fed from a portable power bank. The hub is compatible with both battery varieties the camera takes, but charges the newer 3400mAh models 25% more quickly – in 2 hours 18 minutes for one and 2 hours 48 minutes for two. The older 3200mAh model takes 3 hours.

Batteries can be checked via the LED panel that monitors the charging process as well as providing a quick levels readout for partially charged units.

The Hasselblad Battery Charging Hub makes it possible for a Hasselblad photographer to streamline the battery charging process, allowing X1D photographers to go further with their creative pursuits. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K update adds pixel remapping, better battery life, more

Blackmagic Design has released Blackmagic Cameras 6.1, the latest firmware for its Pocket Cinema Camera 4K camera. The update includes better audio recording, improved battery performance, a new pixel remapping feature and other updates.

On the audio front, Blackmagic has implemented a new audio processor that ‘analyzes incoming audio from the dual microphones on each side of the camera to dramatically lower the noise floor, resulting in quieter recordings than possible before.’ Audio latency has also been reduced for more accurate syncing with video footage and improved real-time monitoring.

A new in-camera calibration tool has also been added that lets users recalibrate pixels in the camera to fix brightness variations that can occur over time. ‘The new pixel calibration feature allows the camera to realign the light output of each pixel resulting in a smooth clean image under changing environmental conditions,’ says Blackmagic.

Other features and improvements include more accurate autofocus, a new media formatting interface designed to prevent accidental formats, 2:1 monitoring frame guides, and new power savings and efficiency fixes that Blackmagic claims improves battery life 10-15%.

Fremont, California, USA – February 4, 2019 – Blackmagic Design today announced Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 which is a new update for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. This update adds quieter audio recording, a new pixel remapping feature, new 2:1 monitoring frame guides, improved battery performance and much more.

The new Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 significantly improves audio recording when using the built in microphones on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. The new processing now analyzes incoming audio from the dual microphones on each side of the camera to dramatically lower the noise floor, resulting in quieter recordings than possible before. In addition, latency has been reduced for audio monitoring, audio and video synchronization has been fine tuned, and the 3.5mm audio input selection interface is now more intuitive, making it faster to use.

Blackmagic Cameras 6.1 also improves auto focus performance. Auto focus now responds quicker and more accurately so that lens hunting is greatly reduced when the camera is locking on to the focal point. There’s also a new media formatting interface that helps prevent customers from accidentally formatting media cards. Once the camera is updated, customers will need to tap and hold the media format confirmation button for 3 seconds before a card will be erased and reformatted.

This update also includes a new in-camera calibration feature which allows customers to recalibrate pixels in the camera. Over time some pixels can change in brightness and create small variations across the sensor. The new pixel calibration feature allows the camera to realign the light output of each pixel resulting in a smooth clean image under changing environmental conditions. Blackmagic Camera 6.1 update also features 2:1 monitoring frame guides, which is another creative composition tool for filmmakers to frame shots. In addition, new power savings and efficiency enhancements improve battery runtime by 10-15% and give customers a more accurate indication of remaining battery power.
