3 Legged Thing’s new tripods feature leveling base, video heads, table-top option and more

Tripod manufacturer 3 Legged Thing has announced a new range of premium tripods that are designed to suit both stills and movie photographers. Inspired by the skateboarding world, the Legends range will offer video heads for the first time as well as new leg locks, a leveling base as well as three detachable legs that can become monopods or booms arms for lights and microphones. The company has launched two models, Mike and Jay, and promises more for the future.

The 8-layer carbon fiber legs offer a lightweight tripod without compromising stability and rigidity according to the company, and new Rapid Latch locks on the tops of the legs make them quick and easy to open for those with disabilities.

Mike is the taller of the two, measuring 66.7cm (26.26in) when closed, but extending to a maximum height of 147.5cm (58.07in). Mike weighs 1.65kg (3.64lbs) and can support kit of up to 14kg (30lbs). Jay is designed to be travel-friendly and measures 40.5cm / 15.94″ when folded and extends to a maximum height of 111.2cm (43.78in). He weighs 1.41kg (3.1lbs) and can hold the same weight as Mike – up to 14kg (30lbs).

Jay has a minimum height of 10.0cm / 3.94″ and Mike of 13.5cm / 5.31″, but both models can have their legs removed and optional ‘footwear’ mini-legs attached so that they can be used very close to the ground or on a tabletop. With the mini-legs attached the leveling base can double as a 3-legged stabilizer for one of the main legs when used as a monopod.

The company has also released its first video heads, which offer left or right panning arm placement, fluid movement and adjustable tilt motion. The AirHed Cine comes with either an Arca-Swiss clamp and plate or a standard version, and both have a mounting thread for attaching accessories.

Mike will cost $ 549.99 / £499.99 on his own, or $ 849.99 / £729.99 with the AirHed Cine, while Jay costs $ 479.99 / £449.99 on his own, or $ 779.99 / £679.99 with the AirHed Cine. The AirHed Cine costs $ 349.99 / £299.99 by itself. The company says there will be more to come for the Legends system in the next few months.

The first two tripods in the range are Mike and Jay, 3 Legged Thing’s first levelling-base, hybrid photo/video tripods. Equally useful for video makers or landscape photographers, levelling base systems enable smooth and fast set-ups on challenging terrain. Mike is a full size carbon fibre tripod, designed for incredible stability in any conditions, whilst Jay features shorter carbon fibre legs with more sections, creating a travel-friendly video option, the first of its kind.

Mike is named after one of the original Bones Brigade skateboarders, Mike McGill. Inventor of the McTwist (arguably the most iconic trick ever invented), Mike is one of the most famous skateboarders in the world, and a professional for over 30 years. Jay is named for the late Jay Adams, the Dogtown skateboarder, whose style was inspired by surfing, influencing a whole new generation of skaters.

Similarly, the tripods in the Legends range share this DNA of innovation. These tripods have not one but three detachable legs, adding a level of versatility rarely seen in a tripod system. The legs can be used as a monopod; as boom arms for lights or microphones, or both!

With the legs removed the tripod can be used on table-tops or at ground level by joining a set of 3LT’s tripod footwear to the leg hinges. This enables both Mike and Jay to be used for macro work, bringing photographers a varied range of perspectives from which to shoot. With the addition of 3LT footwear, the levelling base can also be used as a foot stabiliser for a monopod leg, adding an extra level of versatility to the products.

The tripods are constructed from 8 layers of 100% pure Japanese carbon fibre, and aerospace-grade, anodised magnesium alloy, providing incredible strength, rigidity, and durability.

The new tripods have 3 Legged Thing’s new Rapid Latch, a hardwearing anodised mag-alloy latch with auto-engage lock, which is used to open and position the legs. The Rapid Latch has been specifically designed to make adjusting the legs quick and simple, even if the user is wearing thick gloves. Rapid Latch is also designed to be friendly to those with disabilities or hand injuries, enabling them to easily change the leg angles without complication or fuss.

Each of the legs can be used at three optimal angles creating different shooting heights, and can be positioned independently for use on uneven ground. The tripods come with removable rubber Bootz, which can be replaced with one of four varieties of alternative footwear, to increase stability on even the most challenging surfaces.

The Legends range tripod leg locks have new external designs with raised O-Pads for improved, grip, leverage and water displacement. Internally, the locks have been engineered with a new design of Chicken Lips (shims) which give the locks greater strength and grip, and formidable anti-rotation.

Mike and Jay’s levelling base has a friction control that enables users to finely-adjust the positioning. Both tripods are also available in kits with 3 Legged Thing’s stunning new video head, the AirHed Cine.

Precision milled from aerospace-grade magnesium alloy, and featuring a distinctive spiderweb design, the AirHed Cine has an adjustable, fluid-motion, tilt mechanism that offers smooth movement and can be controlled directly, or with the included panning arm. The arm can be fitted to either side of the head for right or left-handed operation. Sony’s FX9 will offer oversampled 4K 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording, Dual Base ISO and more

Sony has unveiled the FX9, a new XDCAM camera that features a 6K full-frame sensor, a hybrid autofocus system and, most interestingly, an E-mount for attaching lenses.

The camera is based around a newly-developed 6K Exmor R sensor that features over 15 stops of dynamic range, Dual Base ISO (ISO 800 and 4000 in S-Log 3) taken from Sony’s Venice cameras and internal oversampled 4K 4:2:2 10-bit recording. Sony does note though that the FX9 will only support 3840×2160 recording at launch with full 4096×2160 recording following in a future update. The FX9 is also capable of capturing Full HD at 120 frames per second.

The Fast Hybrid AF system features a 561-point phase-detection AF sensor that covers roughly 94 percent the width and 96 percent the height of the imaging area. Sony has also taken inspiration from its FS7 series and included a continuously variable electronic variable neutral density (ND) filter.

The FX9 is also capable of recording image stabilization metadata that will be able to be imported into Sony’s Catalyst Browse/Prepare software to precisely stabilize footage in post-production via an update expected to be out in December 2019. Sony says other post-production software developers are being encouraged to adding this functionality as well.

Sony has also made the FX9 compatible with existing and new accessories, including Sony’s UWP-D wireless microphones, the XDCA-FX9 extender kit that enables 10-bit Super35 4K video at 120 fps (as well as 16-bit Raw output in an upcoming update) and additional accessories.

To pair with the FX9, Sony has announced the FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G, an E-mount lens designed to work hand-in-hand with the new E-mount camera system. The lens features two Extreme Aspherical (XA) elements, an 11-blade aperture diaphragm and floating focus groups to offer improved focusing across the entire zoom range.

The FX9 will be available ‘towards the end of 2019’ while the FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G lens is set for a spring 2020 release. Pricing information hasn’t yet been confirmed for either units.

Next generation camera offers greater flexibility to bring artistic vision to life

SAN DIEGO, CA — SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 — At IBC 2019 in Amsterdam, Sony today unveiled the PXW-FX9, its first XDCAM camera featuring an advanced 6K² full-frame sensor and Fast Hybrid Auto Focus (AF) system. The new camera offers content creators greater creative freedom and flexibility to capture stunning images that truly resonate with audiences.

Building on the success of the PXW-FS7 and PXW-FS7M2, the FX9 uniquely combines high mobility with an advanced AF system, impressive bokeh and slow-motion capabilities thanks to its newly-developed sensor. The FX9 also inherits its color science and a Dual Base ISO from the VENICE digital motion picture camera, creating the ultimate tool of choice for documentaries, music videos, drama productions and event shooting.

The FX9 was designed in close collaboration with the creative community and is an example of Sony continuously evolving cameras to innovate for the customer and market needs. The FX9 benefits from the versatility, portability and performance expected of an FS7 series “Run & Gun” style camera, while also offering High Dynamic Range and full-frame shooting features.

Powerful features

The newly-developed Exmor RTM sensor offers wide dynamic range with high sensitivity, low noise and over 15 stops of latitude that can be recorded internally in 4K³ 4:2:2 10bit. Oversampling of the full-frame 6K sensor’s readout allows professionals to create high-quality 4K footage with impressive bokeh effects through shallow depth of field, while wide-angle shooting opens new possibilities for content creators to express their creativity.

A dual base ISO of 800 and 4000 enables the image sensor’s characteristics to best capture scenes from broad daylight to the middle of the night. With S-CinetoneTM color science, the new sensor can also create soft and alluring facial tones. The camera can also capture content up to five times slow-motion with Full HD 120fps shooting played back at 24p.

The shallow depth of field available with a full-frame image sensor requires precise focus control, and the enhanced Fast Hybrid AF system, with customizable transition speeds and sensitivity settings, combines phase detection AF for fast, accurate subject tracking with contrast AF for exceptional focus accuracy. The dedicated 561-point phase-detection AF sensor covers approximately 94% in width and 96% in height of the imaging area, allowing consistently accurate, responsive tracking – even with fast-moving subjects while maintaining shallow depth of field.

Creative freedom

Inspired by the high mobility “Run & Gun” style approach from the FS7 series of cameras, the FX9 offers content creators shooting flexibility thanks to a continuously variable Electronic Variable ND Filter. This enables instant exposure level changes depending on the filming environment, such as moving from an inside space to outdoors or while filming in changing natural light conditions.

Additionally, the FX9’s image stabilization metadata can be imported to Sony’s Catalyst Browse/Prepare? software, to create incredibly stable visuals even in handheld mode. Sony is also working to encourage third-party non-linear editing tools to adopt this functionality.

The FX9 comes with a wide range of customizations and expansion features. These include compatibility with the new UWP-D series of wireless microphones via Multi Interface Shoe™ (MI Shoe) with digital audio interface, the XDCA-FX9 extender kit enabling 10bit Super35 4K 120fps and 16bit RAW output in a future update, compatibility with Sony BP-GL and BP-FL series batteries, D-Tap, RJ-45 interface and stable “Dual Link” streaming by using two carrier lines, as well as DWX slot-in type digital wireless receiver commonly used in broadcasting settings?. The FX9 will also be compatible with the newly launched E-mount lens FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G, which uniquely balances full manual operability for professional cinema shooting and auto-control functions.

Sony Unveils Full-frame E-Mount Cinema Lens FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G, Designed for High Optical Performance and Reliable Operability

Lens offers greater flexibility for video content creation, with servo zoom and autofocus/autoexposure system

SAN DIEGO, CA — SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 — At IBC 2019 in Amsterdam, Sony today introduced a new full-frame E-mount, 16-35mm lens (FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G) to accompany the newly announced FX9 full-frame camera. The lens offers high optical performance, reliable operability and intelligent shooting functions for cinematographers. It is compatible with the full range of Sony’s E-mount cameras – from Alpha™ interchangeable lens cameras to the VENICE digital cinema camera – bringing unprecedented creative flexibility for all content creators. Sony also announced their intention to expand the FE C Cinema Lens line-up going forward.

“The performance of our new E-mount Cinema Lens series offers filmmakers greater creative freedom and helps them concentrate on their artistic vision. Lens for a new age of full-frame video shooting

The new lens is compatible with the intelligent shooting functions of E-mount. Paired with the new full-frame FX9 camera, it supports fast and accurate auto focus, making it possible to track quick-moving subjects while maintaining a shallow depth of field.

Stunning bokeh and corner-to-corner resolution

The two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements with extreme surface precision of 0.01-micron, together with circular 11-blade apertures, deliver beautifully smooth bokeh in every frame. The two XA elements and three aspheric lenses are positioned in a way that effectively reduces field curvature, astigmatism and, in combination with two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glasses, reduces color distortion. Additionally, floating focus employs two focusing groups, providing outstanding resolution at every zoom position. Nano AR (Anti Reflection) coating drastically reduces flare and ghost phenomenon.

Excellent operability with three independent rings, remote control from the camera, and a detachable servo zoom

The new E-mount lens further offers accurate and precise operability thanks to three independent rings for focus, zoom and iris that content creators can manipulate to get the exact results they desire. The linear response Manual Focus (MF) feature provides direct adjustment for precise and repeatable manual focusing. The focus ring with a large rotation angle also includes a distance scale, which makes it possible to quickly and easily set the same focus position during scenes that need to be shot repeatedly.

The new range also supports a number of lens accessories to facilitate a variety of different shooting styles. The industry standard 0.8mm pitch gear on each lens ring provides the option to use follow focus and remote actuators. Equally, the widely-available 115mm diameter matte box and lens support can be used to aid accurate, responsive and precise operability. Additional functions include a de-clickable iris ring that prevents unintended iris change during shooting, the option to reverse the rotation direction of the zoom ring to be fitted with user’s preference and detachable servo zoom that provides smooth zooming expression.

The new 16-35mm (FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G) will be available in Spring 2020.

The Sandisk iXpand Base is an iPhone dock that backs up your phone while it charges

Unlike many Android phones, Apple’s iPhones don’t come with microSD slots or other expandable storage. iPhone users who do not trust the cloud can therefore have a hard time backing up photos, videos, contacts and other types of content from the their devices.

To make local backup easier on iPhone users, Western Digital has introduced a creative solution: The SanDisk iXpand Base. This iPhone dock enables users to automatically back up their files while their phone charges. The device combines a 15W charger with a built-in harddrive and offers up to 250GB capacity.

Simply plug the iPhone in and leave it on the rubberized surface while charging. Data is backed up automatically and can be restored via a dedicated app. This works with previously set up iPhones, but also brand new devices, making it a useful option for data transfer when you’re upgrading to a new iPhone model.

Prices start at $ 50 and go as high as $ 200 depending on capacity.

Manfrotto launches new FluidTech Base and monopod kits for stills and video

Accessory-maker Manfrotto has introduced a new series of monopod kits called XPRO Monopod+ and a new FluidTech Base to help videographers to achieve smooth pan, tilt and swivel motions. The new Monopod+ models come in a choice of four or five sections. The legs are made of aluminum or carbon fiber and kits are available with and without heads. The actual monopods are the same as the existing XPRO models but they come with the FluidTech base included.

The new base is slightly larger than the one it replaces and offers three-way motion instead of just support for panning. The rotation can be locked off to allow only panning or unlocked to support smooth action in three directions. The base attaches and detaches by screwing it to the foot of the monopod, and while the base will hold the monopod upright on its own Manfrotto doesn’t suggest using it self-standing with a camera attached.

Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM galleries: Roller derby and daylight base ISO samples

Our friend James McDaniel recently put Sony’s premium stabilized telezoom to the test, first in low light shooting roller derby WFTDA Playoff action and later in daylight, shooting at base ISO. This lens features built-in image stabilization and uses a linear motor to acquire focus quickly and silently, which could be real benefits to all kinds of photographers. Study: Instagram interactions declining as user base grows

User interactions on Instagram decreased an overall 33% from the first quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2016, according to social media analytics company Quintly. Video interactions decreased more substantially than image interactions, with video interactions down 39% and image interactions down 27%. The changes affected accounts with a high number of followers more so than accounts with less followers.

The study is based on an analysis of 13,000 Instagram profiles, and considers both ‘likes’ and comments as forms of interaction. While the decrease in interactions is ‘tremendous,’ according to Quintly, it doesn’t necessarily indicate anything dire for the image-sharing app. Rather, the company speculates that a combination of increased posting frequencies among users and a growing user base has crowded users’ feeds while their interactions with the content remain relatively stable, causing a natural decrease in interactions.

Additionally, Quintly points toward more brands joining Instagram as a potential cause, saying the brands may be alienating their followers with various advertising methods, causing the followers to interact less often. The company summarizes its findings, saying, ‘The takeaway should definitely not be that Instagram is losing traction but more that it starts to get harder to achieve success in the “fight for interactions” on increasingly fast timelines.’

Studio report: Nikon D5 has lowest base ISO dynamic range of any current FF Nikon DSLR

When the Nikon D5 arrived in our office on Friday we immediately wanted to answer a few questions: How is the low light performance? How good is the autofocus? How is the Raw dynamic range? After running our Exposure Latitude and ISO Invariance tests we’ve found that while the D5’s sensor is clearly optimised for low-light image making, it represents a rather surprising – and disappointing – step backwards in terms of base ISO dynamic range.

Let’s take a closer look, starting with our Exposure Latitude test scene. There are two pages in this article, so don’t miss page 2, where we’ll look at ISO invariance. 

Exposure Latitude

In this test we look to see how tolerant of pushing exposure the D5’s Raw files are. We’ve done this by exposing our scene with increasingly lower exposures, then pushed them back to the correct brightness using Adobe Camera Raw. Examining what happens in the shadows allows you to assess the exposure latitude (essentially the dynamic range) of the Raw files.

Because the changes in this test noise are primarily caused by shot noise and this is mainly determined by the amount of light the camera has had access to, the results are only directly comparable between cameras of the same sensor size. However, this will also be the case in real-world shooting if you’re limited by what shutter speed you can keep steady, so this test gives you an idea of the amount of processing latitude different formats give.

Even at a modest 3 stop push, we see the D5 has already contributed a considerable amount of noise to its low ISO images compared to the 24MP D750. After a 5 stop push the gap widens, with the D750’s 5 stop file looking more like the 3 stop file from the D5. In fact, the D5’s performance closely resembles the performance seen from the Canon 6D$ (document).ready(function() { $ (“#imageComparisonLink2279”).click(function() { ImageComparisonWidgetLink(2279); }); }), with just a bit more color noise showing in the 6D’s file.

After very aggressive pushes, an interesting series of bands appears at the top and bottom of the image. We don’t know what’s causing this additional noise (which appears to be confined to specific read-out rows) but it’s interesting to note.

Caught on Video: Illegal BASE Jump Off NYC Freedom Tower

Breaking into One World Trade Center and scaling to its top was just the beginning for this daring trio, who then not only parachuted from close to the peak but also had to navigate nearby structures on the way down and ultimately land in the street.

If you are not one for suspense, skip to the two minute and thirty second mark in the first video above to watch as the first jumper takes the plunge from the 1,776-foot tower, followed shortly thereafter by the man behind the camera.

After months of hiding their identities, James Brady, Marco Markovich and Kyle Hartwell have turned themselves in and are already raising legal funds for their defense. They are charged with burglary, reckless endangerment and jumping from a structure.

According to the New York Times, the trio have been “described by their lawyers as experienced, amateur sky divers who also sought thrills leaping from buildings, bridges and other structures.” As for how they got in and up in this case: apparently, they simply slipped through a hole in the fence, scaled the stairs and did not encounter any security along the way to the top of the tower above. A similar stunt was pulled by a teenager not too long ago, but reporters who tried to follow suit found themselves caught and arrested.

Sea Fort Retreat: Island Hotel in 1860s British Harbor Base

Known for its naval power, England has a great many leftover army and sea forts. Some have been turned into private islands, radio station or micronations, but this one has been made into a museum and luxury resort.

The Spitbank Fort was the result of an 1859 Royal Commission and is located in the Solent, near Portsmouth, England. Though its purpose and wares shifted somewhat over time, it was aimed at protect British shores from both sea and (eventually) air attacks.

The structure remained an operational military island for a full century before being decommissioned in the late 1900s as obsolete.

Five million dollars worth of renovations later, the structure is now a hybrid of its original architecture and engineering and added luxuries including (but not limited to) hotel rooms, bars, restaurants, libraries, saunas, sun decks and swimming pools.
