Sigma announces pricing, availability for its MC-31 PL-to-L-mount adapter

21 Feb

Sigma has announced its upcoming Mount Converter MC-31, which will allow PL-mount lenses to be used with L-mount camera systems, will start shipping on February 27, 2020 for a retail price of $ 679.

First announced at IBC2019, the MC-31 is constructed of an aluminum-alloy with a brass mount and locking ring. When used on the Sigma fp, the lens can also fasten with a screw thread for even more security while shooting.

Conventional? No. But it certainly gets the job done.

Sigma has included shim adjustments within the adapter at two points on the mount. ‘The flange depth can be adjusted on the camera-side mount as well as the lens-side for proper calibration of both camera and lens accuracy,’ according to Sigma.

There’s also a removable tripod socket, making it possible to attach the MC-31 to a tripod or other filmmaking rigs, as well as luminous paint (the same used on Sigma’s Cine lenses) for times when you’re shooting in low-light environments.

We will update this article with purchase links when they go live at the usual retailers.

Press release:

Sigma Mount Converter MC-31 to Begin Shipping on February 27, 2020

Pricing for the MC-31, which allows PL-Mount lenses to be used with L-Mount cameras such as the Sigma fp, will retail for $ 679 USD

Ronkonkoma, NYSigma Corporation of America, a leading camera, photography lens, cine lens, flash and accessories manufacturer, today announced that its Mount Converter MC-31 will begin shipping on February 27, 2020. The Mount Converter MC-31 will retail for $ 679 USD from authorized Sigma dealers.

Announced at IBC2019, the new Sigma Mount Converter MC-31 is a converter that allows creatives to easily adapt PL-Mount cine lenses, which are widely used in filmmaking, for L-Mount cameras including the Sigma fp as well as cameras from Leica and Panasonic. Designed for durability, its metal construction with aluminum alloy body, brass mount and locking ring ensures a secure connection between lens and camera.

For full product details and technical specifications as well as press imagery, please refer to the official press release here and imagery here.

Key Product Features:

Shim Adjustments

The MC-31 has shim adjustments on two points of the mount. The flange depth can be adjusted on the camera-side mount as well as the lens-side for proper calibration of both camera and lens accuracy.

All-Metal Construction

With an aluminum-alloy body and strong brass mount and locking ring, the MC-31 boasts excellent durability. It is also designed to be fastened on the mount of the Sigma fp with a screw thread, ensuring an even more secure connection between the lens and the camera. This allows users to shoot steady without the lens rattling even after long-term use.

Tripod Socket

The removable tripod socket allows MC-31 to be attached to a tripod or other filmmaking accessories such as a camera cage.

Secure Lens Mounting

With the screw thread removed, the stopper of the locking ring is released. This makes it possible to use MC-31 with a PL mount lens that requires tighter mounting than the MC-31’s specifications, allowing the lens to lock securely in place on the converter.

Luminous Paint for Low Lighting

The markings on the upper part of the converter are in the same luminous paint as the one used for Sigma Cine Lenses, helping make it easier to replace or adjust a lens in the dark.

Sharp 8K Video Camera appears at CES 2020 with some specs and availability details

16 Jan
During last year’s CES event, Sharp introduced a Micro Four Thirds camera prototype simply referred to as the ‘8K Video Camera.’ Details about the camera at the time had largely come from Kinotika, which had the chance to spend some hands-on time with the model. The company was back with more details about this model during CES 2020 and this time they come from a video published by Personal View.

During the video interview below, Sharp’s vice president of New Business Development Cliff Quiroga revealed some details about the company’s 8K camera, which was demonstrated with a working model at the most recent Consumer Electronics Show. The camera will be able to record 8K/30p, 4K/60p and 1080/60p video, it was confirmed.

The latter two recording options will be at 200Mbits/s at 10-bit, according to the interview, which reveals that the camera will feature a full-size HDMI output port, a 14cm (5.5″) fully articulating touch LCD, headphone and audio jacks, as well as a mini XLR port. The camera was demonstrated with an 8K external display.

Sharp is aiming for an H2 2020 release date in Japan and plans to launch the camera in the United States at some point ‘shortly after that.’ The price is still expected to fall below $ 4,000, but additional details are still pending.

Rokinon announces pricing, availability of its new 45mm F1.8 lens for Sony full-frame cameras

13 May

Rokinon, known in other markets as Samyang and Bowers, has announced the pricing and availability of its new AF 45mm F1.8 lens for Sony full-frame camera systems.

The lens, which Rokinon calls ‘tiny but premium’ is the latest in its ‘Tiny Series’ lens lineup. The optical construction consists of seven elements in six groups, including two aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element. Certain elements inside the design also feature Rokinon’s ‘Ultra Multi-Coating,’ which is said to reduct flaring and ghosting.

Inside, it features an autofocus motor for Sony camera systems, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm and an aperture range between F1.8 and F22.

While the lens was designed for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras, it can also be used with Sony APS-C models where it ends up being a 67.5mm equivalent focal length lens. The lens measures in at 61.8mm (2.43in) by 56.1mm (2.21in) and weighs just 162g (5.7oz).

Venus Optics announces pricing, availability of its Laowa 100mm F2.8 2:1 macro lens

10 May

Venus Optics has announced that the Laowa 100mm F2.8 macro lens it first showed at Photokina last year will cost $ 449 and will begin shipping at the end of this month. The 100mm Ultra-Macro APO lens can achieve 2:1 magnification and joins the company’s 60mm F2.8 with the same magnification ratio to create a unique line-up of macro optics.

The version designed for Canon EF mount has electronic contacts to drive aperture control and EXIF data

The lens will be available for Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony FE mounts, and will come with slight variations depending on the mount version. The Canon model is chipped and has an aperture motor to enable body-controlled aperture changes and for EXIF data to be stored in the image. The Canon version will also has a nine-bladed iris, while the Nikon model features a seven-blade aperture diaphragm. The Sony FE version of the lens will has a 13 blade aperture diaphragm.

Below are a few sample photos provided by Laowa:

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5942078857″,”galleryId”:”5942078857″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Laowa says it has worked hard to suppress chromatic aberrations, not only in focused areas but also areas not covered by the depth-of-field – which it points out is a problem for many other lenses.

A tripod collar is available for an additional $ 30. For more information see the Venus Optics website.

Press release:

Venus Optics announces availability and pricing for Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra Macro APO

Featuring a 2 times life-size reproduction with no visible CA, the new Laowa Macro is a high quality and versatile macro and portrait lens.

China, 7 May 2019 – Venus Optics, the camera lenses manufacturer who had previously launched a number of unique Laowa camera lenses, is proud to announce the availability and pricing of the new Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra-Macro APO lens.

Followed by the success of the Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1 Macro, the 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Macro is the 2nd member of Laowa 2:1 macro line-up. This new 100mm lens can cover full frame sensor and focus from 2:1 magnification to infinity. 100mm is a more popular focal length for macro photographers. However, all of the current 100mm macro lenses in the market can only achieve 1:1 (life-size) or even smaller magnification. Shooting with smaller bugs is usually a challenge for macro photographers. The wider magnification range of the new Laowa Macro allows photographers to capture subjects at any size, making it one of the most versatile macro lens in the market. Despite having the wider range, Venus Optics manage to compress the size of the lens to the minimal and it is similar to other 1:1 macro lens in the market.

Laowa 100mm 2:1 Macro lens also features an apochromatic (APO) characteristic that chromatic aberration is invisible. Chromatic aberration (CA) is one of the most challenging topic for optics designer as it can usually ruin a perfect image. Some of the macro lenses in the market controls the chromatic aberration at the ‘in-focus’ area really well but the CA is uncontrollable in ‘out-of-focus’ rendition. The Laowa 100mm, however, delivers an exceptional performance on chromatic aberration suppression, both at the ‘in-focus’ area as well as ‘out-of-focus’ area. The subject in the image will not be polluted of any unwanted color fringing.

The Canon version of the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Macro lens is integrated with a CPU chip and aperture motor. Photographers can now control the aperture and exposure through the camera itself and record the EXIF data into the photos. A focus indicator will also be shown in the camera to assist focus. This new feature also benefits macro photographers when composing at smaller f-stop as the aperture will only close when shutter is released, making the viewfinder so much brighter.

Not only it is an exceptional macro lens, the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 is also a very decent portrait lens when focus to infinity. The 12 elements in 10 groups optics design delivers a crystal sharpness image in both macro and infinity distances. The bright f/2.8 and circular aperture renders softly diffused bokeh and isolates the subject from its background. The lens has an internal focusing structure that will not extend when focus is changed. A multi-layer coating has also been applied to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast. Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony FE mounts are currently available.

Pricing & Availability

The suggested retail selling price in US of the new Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra Macro APO lens is USD 449/pc (ex-VAT). Pricing varies in different countries.

The lens is now available to order from Venus Optics authorized resellers and official website (http://www.venuslens.net/) . Shipping is expected to start from late May onwards.

Sigma announces pricing, availability of its MC-21 SA- and EF- L-mount adapters

29 Mar

Earlier this month, at CP+, DPReview got its hands on the Sigma MC-21 adapters, a pair of adapters that allow either Sigma’s SA- or Canon EF-mount lenses to be used on L-mount cameras. At the time we weren’t given details on pricing or availability, but today that changes. Sigma has announced the Sigma MC-21 SA-L and EF-L adapters will be available starting April 2019 for a cost of $ 169 USD and $ 249 USD, respectively.

As we were told at CP+, the SA-L and EF-L adapters can be used with 29 existing Sigma lenses, including 23 full-frame lenses and 6 APS-C lenses from the Global Vision lineup. This brings the total number of supported L-mount lenses to 40, including the 11 DG Art primes and and native L-mount lenses.

A full list of the Sigma lenses supported by the SA- and EF-mount lens adapter.

Sigma also confirms that data pre-loaded on the MC-21 adapters ensures autofocus and aperture control have been optimized for the supported lenses and says future lenses will hold the required data in the lens itself, meaning no firmware updates will be needed. The MC-21 adapters also support EXIF data transfer and various in-camera correction functions including chromatic aberration, peripheral illumination, magnification and distortion.

Additional features include an integrated tripod socket for mounting larger lenses without tripod support and an internal flocking that’s used to reduce internal reflections.

On the Foveon front, Sigma notes it ‘will aim to [eventually] replace its SA-mount lenses with the native L-mount versions, but until then, Foveon shooters can rely on the existing offering of Sigma MC-21 at a lower price point to ease the transition to the new system.’

Press release:

Sigma Announces Pricing & Availability for Sigma Mount Converter MC-21

Available in April 2019, the new accessory ensures compatibility of the Sigma lenses in EF and SA mounts with the L-Mount camera systems

Ronkonkoma, NY – March 29, 2019 – Sigma Corporation of America, a leading still photo and cinema lens, camera, flash and accessory manufacturer, today announced pricing and availability for the new Sigma Mount Converter MC-21, offering photographers a wider range of lens options for L-Mount cameras from Sigma, Leica and Panasonic. The Sigma MC-21 will start shipping in April 2019 and will be priced at $ 169.00 USD for Sigma SA-L mount and $ 249.00 USD for Canon EF-L mount.

Features

The Sigma Mount Converter MC-21 allows for Sigma’s SA mount and Canon EF mount lenses to be used on L-Mount camera bodies. By attaching MC-21 to a Sigma SA mount or Sigma Canon EF mount lens, it becomes compatible with the L-Mount camera system without compromising usability and image quality. The development of Sigma MC-21 increases the number of interchangeable lenses manufactured by Sigma to be used with the L-Mount systems by 29, offering a total of 40 lens choices, including 11 DG Art primes with native L-mount. The addition of MC-21 to the Sigma accessory lineup will increase the accessibility of the L-Mount system and further Sigma’s role in the strategic L-Mount Alliance alongside Leica and Panasonic.

The full list of compatible lenses and technical specifications can be accessed here and product imagery can be downloaded here.

Pricing

The lower price for the Sigma MC-21 in Sigma SA-L mount reflects the company’s appreciation for the loyal Sigma camera users as the MC-21 in Sigma SA-L mount allows for Sigma SA mount lenses to be used on any L-Mount camera body. Eventually, Sigma will aim to replace its SA mount lenses with the native L-mount versions, but until then, Foveon shooters can rely on the existing offering of Sigma MC-21 at a lower price point to ease the transition to the new system.
