Canon unveils AI-powered automatic camera, the PowerShot PICK

Canon has launched a campaign on the Japanese crowdfunding site Makuake for an AI-powered camera, the PowerShot PICK. The campaign has proven to be highly successful, attracting nearly ¥100,000,000 in support. The goal was ¥1,000,000.

The experimental PowerShot PICK camera can analyze a scene, identify people, track their faces and then, using artificial intelligence, determine the ideal moment to capture a photo. In a rough translation, Canon refers to the PICK as an ‘automatic shooting camera.’ The PowerShot PICK combines Canon’s optical, video processing, and artificial intelligence technology.

In terms of design, the PowerShot PICK is a compact, modern-looking device. It has been designed to blend in, while Canon has also considered ways to give the PICK some character. You can also take the PICK with you when you leave the house, such as when going to a family gathering or an event. You can place the PICK on a tripod as well, and Canon is offering special Velbon tripods as part of the campaign.

The PowerShot PICK uses a 1/2.3-inch 12MP CMOS image sensor. The sensor is paired with a 19-57mm equivalent zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F2.8. The PICK includes built-in image stabilization. The PICK pans 170° in both directions and can tilt 110°. The PICK records to a microSD card and weighs a mere 170g. As you can see in the video above, the PICK is small, with a height of about 3.5″ (90mm) tall.

While the PICK is designed to take photos automatically in the background, which Canon believes will result in more authentic images and better mementos, the PowerShot PICK can also be manually controlled using keywords. A user says, ‘Hello PICK,’ followed by commands to take a photo, record video, change subjects and stop capturing.

The PICK will launch alongside a dedicated smartphone app, allowing you to view and share photos and videos captured by PICK. The app automatically recommends the best photos, although you can view all images.

The setup process promises to be easy. After pairing with your smartphone, which is required, you simply power on PICK and place it somewhere, depending on the situation. You could place it on a table at the center of a family meal, on a tripod near an event, on a bookshelf, etc. As mentioned, although PICK can operate automatically, it can be controlled using voice or by using the smartphone app.

The Canon PowerShot PICK is currently available only to backers on Makuake. The price for the PICK works out to just under $ 400. Given the campaign’s success, the only remaining units are for the PICK and charging cable. The tripod bundle has sold out. Canon intends to ship the PICK to backers this July. Canon hasn’t announced global or public release plans, so it’s unclear if the PowerShot PICK will be available outside of Japan. You can learn more about the PowerShot PICK by visiting Makuake.

Netgear launches Meural WiFi Photo Frame with automatic wireless photo album syncing

Netgear has announced the Meural WiFi Photo Frame. The frame is designed to conveniently display your photographs using an accompanying smartphone application.

The Meural is a 13.5″ x 7.5″ frame with a 15.6″ diagonal display offering a 1920 x 1080 resolution and anti-glare coating. The display promises a wide viewing angle and ambient light sensor to ensure it looks good in any setting and from a large variety of angles. Including its bezel, the Meural Photo Frame is 16″ (408mm) wide, 10″ (259mm) tall and has a depth of 1.68″ (42.4mm). The frame weighs 2.9 lb. (1.3kg).

Like Netgear’s Meural Canvas before it, the smaller WiFi Photo Frame also utilizes touchless gestures for photo control, allowing you to scroll through images with a wave of your hand. The frame can also quickly be rotated between portrait and landscape orientation.

On the inside of the Meural is 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 8GB of storage (of which 4GB are utilized for storing photos), a Quad-core ARM processor and WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4GHz and 5GHz). The frame includes gesture sensors for both portrait and landscape orientation, an orientation sensor itself and an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust brightness. The frame utilizes a DC power port for power and Netgear states that it uses approximately 20W during typical usage. The included power cord is 6′ long.

Using an app on your smartphone, you can link existing photo albums to automatically upload and display on the Meural WiFi Photo Frame. The frame can also display location and data information so you will always know when and where images were captured by simply gesturing upward. You can also use the app to invite family and friends to upload their own photo albums to a specific Meural. This means that distant family and friends can upload new photos to your own Meural, allowing you to quickly share memories with one another via personalized photo playlists.

The Meural Photo Frame is compatible with Apple and Android devices. For iPhone and iPad users, you must have iOS 11 or later. On Android, the frame is compatible with Android 5.0 or later. For iOS users, the Meural Photo Frame supports Live Photos. When using either compatible device, you can also display short videos up to 15 seconds in duration.

Disney Research Studios demonstrates automatic face swapping with faster, cheaper AI

Disney Research Studios and ETH Zurich have published a study detailing a new algorithm that is able to swap faces from one subject to another in high-resolution photos and videos. Of note, this system is able to fully automate the face-swapping process, presenting the first instance of megapixel-resolution machine-generated imagery that is ‘temporally coherent’ and photo-realistic.

The new algorithm involves taking the face of a subject and modifying it using the face of another person, blending the two so that the face from one person is presented with the expressions and movements of another.

The system involves a multi-way comb network trained with images of multiple people, as well as a blending method that preserves contrast and lighting. ‘We also show that while progressive training enables generation of high-resolution images,’ the researchers say, ‘extending the architecture and training data beyond two people allows us to achieve higher fidelity in generated expressions.’

Key to the high level of quality is the ‘landmark stabilization algorithm,’ which Disney researchers describe as a ‘crucial’ aspect of dealing with high-resolution content. Though this isn’t the first instance of face-swapping in footage, the study points out that existing methods used to generate characters like the young Carrie Fisher in Rogue One are both time-intensive and quite expensive.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to change this, ultimately enabling creators to rapidly generate computer characters using live-action footage and input images of the target. Generating realistic faces remains a big problem, however, producing what is referred to as the ‘uncanny valley’ look that limits the use of this tech.

This makes Disney’s new technology particularly exciting, teasing a future in which creators will be able to generate photo-realistic, high-resolution, temporally-stable face swaps between two people. The researchers explain:

As our system is also capable of multi-way swaps — allowing any pair of performances and appearances in our data to be swapped — the possible benefits to visual effects are extensive, all at a fraction of the time and expense required using more traditional methods.

The study compares the face-swapping results from this new method to the results from existing algorithms, including DeepFaceLab and DeepFakes. Though the other algorithms were able to produce casually convincing results, they were unable to pass scrutiny and, in some cases, were either excessively blended or outright bizarre and uncanny.

In comparison, the face swaps generated using the new method were realistic and maintained a high level of sharpness and detail at a 1024 x 1024 resolution, bypassing the soft, blurry results often seen when using DeepFakes. As well, the researchers note that DeepFakes has such heavy processing requirements that it was only able to generate a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels using an 11GB GPU.

When using morphable models, the researchers were able to increase the resolution to 500 x 500 pixels, but the results were typically unrealistic. Beyond that, the researchers were forced to train the conventional models for each pair of face swaps whereas the new algorithm could be simultaneously trained for all of the people used for the various face swaps.

However, the study points out that the new algorithm presents one big limitation also experienced by other, more conventional methods: the original head shape is maintained. Though the face swap may be very realistic, the face itself may not match the head shape properly, resulting in a generated character that looks a bit ‘off’ from what is expected.

Future research may result in a method for transferring the subject’s head shape in addition to their face, producing not only photo-realistic results, but also the correct overall appearance for a digitally-recreated actor. The biggest obvious use for this technology is in film and television, enabling studios to quickly and cheaply (relatively speaking) create 3D models of aging or deceased actors.

This technology joins a growing body of research on face-swapping and model-generating algorithms that focus on still images rather than videos. NVIDIA, for example, published a study in late 2018 that demonstrated the generation of photo-realistic portraits of AI models that involved source and target images of real people.

Around a year later, the same company published new research that performed a similar face swap, but one involving dogs instead of humans. We’ve already seen the use of these various AI technologies reach the consumer level — Let’s Enhance 2.0, for example, recently introduced a new feature that utilizes machine learning to reconstruct the faces of subjects in low-resolution images.

Fujifilm’s new Instax Mini 11 features an ‘Automatic Exposure’ mode and dedicated ‘Selfie Mode’

Although not nearly as exciting as its new X-T4 camera, Fujifilm has also announced the Instax Mini 11, its latest-generation instant film camera.

The Instax Mini 11 looks very similar to its predecessor, the Mini 9 (don’t ask where 10 went), but it’s received a subtle facelift. Specifically, the camera is more rounded than before and uses a material around the lens that’s different from the material used in the rest of the camera body. The shutter button and the button used to extend the lens now have dimples as well, presumably to make it easier to locate the buttons by feel when shooting.

Aside from the slight design change, Fujifilm has also added an Automatic Exposure mode that adjusts the shutter speed and flash output based on the ambient lighting environment. Previously, the only option was to choose from a selection of presets that were changed by twisting a ring around the lens.

Fujifilm has also added a new Selfie Mode that, according to Fujifilm, ‘makes it super easy to take selfies and close-up pictures.’ A small convex mirror on the front of the camera makes composing selfies a bit easier as well (this has been on previous-generation Instax Mini cameras).

The Mini 11 also comes in different color options: Blush Pink, Sky Blue, Charcoal Gray, Ice White and Lilac Purple. The Instax Mini 11 is set to ship in mid-March with an MSRP of $ 69.95. In addition to the new camera, Fujifilm has also unveiled two new Instax film varieties: Instax Mini Blue Marble film and Instax Square White Marble film.

New Google research thwarts automatic watermark removal

Watermarks are widely used by photographers and stock agencies to protect their digital property in an online world where very little stands between an eager image thief and your photography. However, even complex watermarks might not be as secure as you’d think when the same pattern is applied to a large number of accessible images.

A research team at Google recently embarked on a two-part experiment. First, they developed a method of quickly,. effectively and automatically removing watermarks from a large set of images. Then, they found a way to thwart their own automatic system, creating a more secure way to watermark.

Automatic Watermark Removal

It’s a tedious task to remove a watermark manually, which can can take even image editing experts several minutes. Even for a computer it is very difficult to automatically detect and remove a watermark on a single image. However, if watermarks are added in a consistent manner to many images, automatic removal becomes much easier.

In the first step, an algorithm identifies which image structures are repeating in an image collection. If a similar watermark is embedded in many images, the watermark becomes the signal and images become the noise. At that point, a few simple image operations can generate a rough estimation of the watermark pattern.

In the second step, the watermark is separated into its image and opacity components while reconstructing a subset of clean images. The end result is a much more accurate estimation of the watermark pattern, which can then easily be removed from the marked images—no manual photo editing required.

Making More Secure Watermarks

As the vulnerability of current watermarking techniques lies in the consistency in watermarks across image collections, the research team at Google developed a method to introduce inconsistencies when embedding watermarks.

They found that simply changing the watermark position or random changes in its opacity do not improve security by much; however, slightly warping the watermark when embedding it in the image did the trick by producing a watermark that is very similar to the original but leaves very visible artifacts when removed by an algorithm. Estimating the random warp field that was applied to the watermark is simply too difficult for current algorithms.

According to the researchers, there is no guarantee that there will not be a way to break randomized watermarking schemes in the future, but randomized warping will make it fundamentally more difficult to automatically remove watermarks from image collections.

Fotodiox introduces full automatic Nikon to Sony E adapter

Accessory manufacturer Fotodiox has introduced a new adapter that allows Nikon lenses to operate with a full range of automatic functions when hosted on a modern Sony E-mount camera body. The Fusion Smart AF Adapter accepts Nikon G AF-I and AF-S and provides connections between the lens and a Sony compact system camera body so that the user can enjoy autofocus as well as the ability to automatically stop down the lens and to trigger vibration reduction in lenses that have it. The adapter uses power from the camera to drive the lens, and EXIF data is passed back from the lens to be recorded in the image file created by the camera.

The company says that the adapter works best with Sony’s latest bodies that feature phase detection autofocusing systems, such as the a7R II. The adapter works with bodies that use contrast detection but the AF is a lot slower.

As Nikon uses a physical lever to close the iris of its lenses Fotodiox has used a motor within the adapter to handle that function so lenses that have no aperture ring don’t have to used wide open all the time. This also means that metering works without the user having to manually stop the lens down and that the camera’s semi-automatic exposure modes to operate.

[MODIFIED] Windows 7 – Disable Automatic Docking, Resizing, and Maximizing of Windows

Prevent Windows 7 from automatically docking, resizing, and maximizing windows when you drag them to the screen edges.

Windows 7 comes with a window management feature that is supposed to make it easier to lay out multiple windows on your Desktop. It does this by automatically maximizing or docking windows when you move them to the top or sides of the screen. Plus, as you resize windows and move your mouse pointer towards the screen edges, Windows 7 will resize the windows for you. You’ll notice these things happening by the appearance of an outlined rectangle during the move or resize operations.

Prevent Windows 7 from automatically contacting Microsoft or prompting you to contact Microsoft whenever a software / hardware / operating system error or problem is detected.
