Heritage Auctions will soon be the first auction house to ever offer an Ansel Adams 4×5 view camera. The camera is part of a complete outfit including an Arca-Swiss 4×5 View Camera, three lenses, a pair of Graflex graphic film pack adapters, compendium lens hood, extra bag bellows, Wratten gelatin filters, a dark cloth, original carrying/shipping case, tripod and more.

This view camera collection was used by Ansel Adams from 1964 to 1968, according to the auction house, after which point he gave the camera to his then-assistant Liliane de Cock, who used it as part of her own career. The camera and related accessories were acquired directly from the photographer’s family. Heritage Auction doesn’t list the condition, saying only that it is ‘available upon request.’ However, it estimates the lot as being worth between $ 70,000 and $ 100,000, and is seeking an opening bid of $ 35,000.

1956 Stereo-Nikkor 3.5cm F3.5 lens auction goes live on eBay

16 Aug

A Stereo-Nikkor 3.5cm F3.5 lens said to be in mint condition has been put up for auction on eBay. This speciality lens was designed for the Nikon S-Mount rangefinder to produce stereoscopic 3D images on a single photograph. The lens is being offered as part of a full kit that also includes a brown Nikon leather case, a Nippon Kogaku lens cap, original silica gel, Nikon Stereo Prism, and original Nikon Stereo L 38 filter.

According to the eBay seller, there’s a chip in the prism’s glass and ‘very tiny scratches’ on the lens, but otherwise the items are said to be in excellent condition. Unfortunately, not much information about the Stereo-Nikkor exists; the product was introduced in December 1956 and discontinued in 1961 or 1962, according to Mir.com. Estimates place Stereo-Nikkor manufacturing at between 100 and 200 units during its brief production.

Though the auction currently has $ 1,125 in bids, it has not reached its minimum reserve amount. The product is located in Vienna, and has a $ 300 shipping rate.

Leica’s historical family tree is up for auction at Christie’s

12 Aug

A piece of Leica history is on auction at Christie’s – or more specifically, 107 pieces of history. The Stammbaum, or family tree, once greeted visitors at the company’s Solms, Germany headquarters and includes models introduced throughout Leica’s history. The collection traces models from rangefinder and SLR product lines all the way back to the U-r Leica, a prototype 35mm camera designed by Oskar Baranack.

The auction is open at Christie’s through September 14, 2016. The family tree’s assessed value is between £350,000 and £450,000 (roughly $ 456,400 – 586,800). If that’s a bit steep for you, there’s a free PDF download showing the camera models included over at apotelyt.com.

Collector’s item: Nikon’s 87th F SLR camera up for auction on eBay

02 Jul

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_4189097372″,”galleryId”:”4189097372″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

A rare Nikon F SLR camera with the original cloth-type shutter and a Nippon Kogaku Tokyo Japan 1:1.4 F = 50mm lens has surfaced in an eBay auction. Per the listing and product photos, this camera was the 87th unit to come off the production line; it was originally owned by the seller’s deceased grandfather who is said to have collected hundreds of cameras during his lifetime.

The Nikon F SLR was developed by Nippon Kogaku in the late 1950s and launched in 1959. The very first models off the production line used the same cloth shutter curtains as the Nikon SP. Nikon switched to using much more durable titanium shutter curtains in all subsequent F bodies, and it is estimated that Nikon produced only around 100 Nikon F SLR units with a cloth shutter before switching to titanium.

The seller started the auction at 99 cents without a ‘reserve’ price, and it currently sits with a bid of $ 4,050. The auction ends this upcoming Sunday.

UP for Auction: Bids Fail to Save World-Famous Holdout House

fdamous up house

In the esoteric realm of ‘nail houses’ – properties whose owners refuse to sell them to developers at any cost – Edith Macefield‘s may be the most well-known, but her century-old home now appears doomed to face a wrecking ball.

An auction for the property was just completed but no buyers were found – anyone purchasing the house would also have had to adopt its existing $ 500,000 mortgage, which, despite its fame, was not enough to attract either curious collectors or real estate developers.

Macefield herself turned down an offer for $ 1,000,000 from developers trying to buy up the land for a commercial complex, hence the construction of a giant concrete wall on three sides as their project went ahead without this last little lot.

In a strange but heartwarming twist: before she passed away in 2008, Macefield befriended the superintendent of the surrounding commercial development. Apparently she ultimately enjoyed the attention and company brought by the development.

As Macefield aged, this superintendent began taking her to appointments and purchasing her groceries and their friendship grew. In the end, she willed him the property – in an attempt to respect the gift, he then tried to make it work as an office or restaurant.

At this point, the house has been boarded up for some time now and the failed sale leaves few possibilities outside of its destruction. It has no historic preservation status, for instance, that might further delay its demolition.

up house movie story

Some fans hoped Pixar Animation Studios, producers of ‘UP’, would buy the house for publicity purposes and spare it the wrecking ball, but there has been no news on that front.

Though there are many holdout homes around the world, hers has become a symbol of resistance – her defiance a story that will certainly outlive the structure itself, whatever its fate.
