Report: Nikon firmware for using CFexpress Type B cards with D5, D850 and D500 will arrive ‘before the end of 2020’

Back in February 2019, Nikon announced it was working to develop a firmware update for its D5, D850 and D500 DSLR cameras that would bring support for using CFExpress Type B memory cards. Since then, we haven’t heard a word about these development from Nikon, but Nikon Rumors says it ‘can confirm’ the much-anticipated firmware update will arrive before the end of the year.

According to Nikon Rumors’ report, the firmware update will arrive ‘before the end of 2020.’ Nikon Rumors says Nikon ‘may say something about [these updates]’ this coming week when it launches its Z6 II and Z7 II mirrorless cameras.

Despite promising a firmware update, Nikon never confirmed the details of what kind of performance we can expect from CFExpress Type B cards when used with its D5, D850 and D500 DSLR cameras. While CFExpress Type B support will make it easier to use the open and more popular format — not to mentioned larger maximum capacities, since XQD cards top out at 240GB compared to the current 1TB maximum capacity of CFExpress cards — it doesn’t necessarily we’ll expect improved speeds over using XQD cards when using them inside the camera. However, you will see improved speeds over XQD cards when importing the cards to your computer if you’re using a CFExpress Type B memory card reader.

We contacted Nikon for a comment on the updates on Friday October 9, but haven’t received a response. We will update this article if we get any further information from Nikon.

Canon EOS M7 Rumored to Arrive in 2020 With Dual Card Slots, 2.36M-Dot EVF

Canon EOS M7 rumor

With most photographers focused on Canon’s new EOS R models, rumors of another couple of Canon EOS M cameras have mostly flown under the radar. This includes talk of a potential EOS M7, as well as a rumored EOS M50 Mark II.

And information continues to leak, including recent Canon EOS M7 specifications; if the rumors are accurate, it’s shaping up to be one impressive camera.

Canon Rumors suggests we may get:

A 32-megapixel sensor.

In-body image stabilization.

A 2.36M-dot electronic viewfinder.

12 frames-per-second shooting.

Dual card slots.

4K/60p.

Nice, right?

Unfortunately, the same set of rumors also puts the EOS M7 price at $ 1599 USD, which is significantly more expensive than either the EOS M50 and the EOS M6 Mark II. But if the EOS M7 is, as many have speculated, a higher-end, durable APS-C mirrorless model from Canon, this pricing could make sense.

Now, the features listed above are unconfirmed (Canon Rumors marks them as CR1), so take them with a pinch of salt. But the EOS M7 has long been a topic of discussion, including speculation of the camera as a mirrorless replacement to the Canon EOS 7D series, which was a favorite set of DSLRs among bird and wildlife photographers.

If the latter is true, the EOS M7 should, first and foremost, be an action photography camera. This is hinted at by the (relatively) fast continuous shooting specification, as well as the dual card slots, but we’ll have to wait and see regarding its durability (the 7D series was known for its large, tough bodies).

Interestingly, Canon Rumors also mentions the possibility of the EOS M line drawing to a close in 2021, with Canon focusing entirely on the EOS R lineup, including (perhaps) an APS-C EOS R model. If such a rumor were true, then the EOS M7 and the EOS M50 Mark II may be some of the last EOS M bodies we ever get.

Of course, this is also completely unsubstantiated, so just keep an eye out for related news in the future!

Nikon Z-mount 1.4x and 2x teleconverters arrive in August

Nikon has announced that it will add two teleconverters to its mirrorless Z-series lineup this summer: the Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x. Both are weather-sealed, with fluorine coatings on front and rear elements to resist smudges, and retain autofocus capabilities with all AF points up to F11. The teleconverters will be compatible with ‘select’ Nikkor Z lenses, including the 70-200mm F2.8 VR S. It’s likely (but unconfirmed) that they’ll also work with the 100-400 and 200-600mm tele-zoom lenses currently on the Z-mount roadmap that should be released next year.

Both teleconverters are compact designs with a protruding front element meaning that, like recent F-mount equivalents, they cannot be ‘stacked’ or combined.

The 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters will sell for $ 550 and $ 600, respectively, and will go on sale in late August. They will be sold alongside the previously-announced but delayed Z 70-200mm F2.8 S, which is expected to become available in the same timeframe.

‘Back to the drawing board’: Sigma says full-frame Foveon camera won’t arrive this year

Development of Sigma’s full-frame Foveon camera has met considerable setbacks and the camera is no longer slated to arrive this year. In a letter to customers, CEO Kazuto Yamaki apologizes for the delay and says the decision comes after ‘careful and rigorous testing.’ No new release date is given at this time, and Mr. Yamaki says that the company has decided to start over with a ‘clean slate.’

The full-frame Foveon project was first announced to the public at CP+ in 2018. At the following year’s CP+, Sigma released more details about the camera and said it would reach market in 2020. Mr. Yamaki discussed with us some of the challenges of taking Foveon full-frame, describing the difficulty of improving interconnected aspects of sensor performance like high ISO performance and color gradation.

Dear Customers,

Thank you for being a valued customer.

At Photokina in September 2018, SIGMA announced the development of an L-mount mirrorless camera equipped with a full-frame Foveon sensor. Then, at CP+2019, we shared our plan to release the camera in 2020 and have worked diligently on the development to meet our commitment.

As a result of careful and rigorous testing based on the latest development information, however, it has become clear that the launch of such a camera would be infeasible within this year. Still at this point, we cannot say for certain when the full-frame Foveon X3 sensor will be put into mass production.

In light of current development progress, we are not in a position to offer any specific release plan at present. We have therefore decided that we should start over the project with a clean slate, putting the production plan for this new camera back to the drawing board and going back to the development of sensor technologies.

Since the earlier announcements, your excitement with the launch of a “full-frame Foveon” has been a tremendous source of inspiration and encouragement for us. Everyone involved in the project has pulled out all the stops to make it a reality. I would like to express my deepest apologies for failing to meet your expectations and having to share this disappointing news.

I would like to emphasize that Foveon sensors are in a class of their own and that they are part of the identity of SIGMA cameras that embodies our ideals and philosophies. We are determined to continue dedicating ourselves to technology development to bring better image sensors to life.

Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L and RF 85mm F1.2L DS will arrive before the end of the year

Canon’s RF 70-200mm F2.8 and 85mm F1.2 DS were announced some time ago, but as of today they’re official. Canon has revealed full details and pricing for these new additions to its full-frame mirrorless lineup.

The RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM boasts an impressively compact design, measuring 146mm (5.8″) in length when at its widest zoom position. It extends when zoomed in towards 200mm, marking a departure from its EF-mount equivalents.

The RF 70-200mm F2.8 includes a floating focus lens element for reduced focus breathing, with a total of 17 elements in 13 groups making up the optical construction. Its image stabilization system is CIPA-rated to 5 stops.

Defocus Smoothing works thanks to a special coating to two of the lens’ thirteen elements

The 85mm F1.2L USM DS sits alongside the standard RF 85mm F1.2, but is differentiated by what Canon calls Defocus Smoothing (DS). Defocus Smoothing works thanks to a special coating to two of the lens’ thirteen elements. This gives out-of-focus highlights smoother edges compared to those rendered by the standard version of the lens.

The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM will be available in late November for $ 2700; the RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS is scheduled to arrive in December for $ 3000.

Short and Light With All The Might: Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM
The new lens features a large and bright f/2.8 aperture, which, along with the 70-200mm focal zoom ranges, presents an ideal workhorse lens for professional and amateur photographers shooting sports, wildlife, wedding and event action. The new RF lens is 27 percent shorter and 28 percent lighter than its EF counterpart with a large portion of the lens element arrangement closer to the camera body. This arrangement is designed to provide photographers with a more balanced feel and experience even at telephoto end of the zoom range. Additionally, the shorter and lighter design allows the lens to be more easily stowed away in a camera bag when not in-use.

A first for Canon lenses, the new RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM features two Nano USM motors providing an even greater level of high-speed autofocus for still image shooting and quiet and smooth autofocus for video shooting. The lens also incorporates a floating focus control, another Canon first, that drives the two lens groups individually while using the two aforementioned Nano USM motors. Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 Noct will arrive at the end of the month for $8000

Nikon has been teasing the release of the Z-mount 58mm F0.95 Noct for as long as the full-frame Z system has been known to the public. Since then it’s been seen in development announcements, on roadmaps and behind glass, but today is the first time its full specifications (not to mention a price) have been released to the public.

Its F0.95 maximum aperture makes this the fastest Nikkor lens ever made. It comprises 17 elements in 10 groups; three aspherical elements are included, one of which is ‘large diameter’. Nano Crystal coating helps control flare and ghosting from light entering the lens at diagonal angles, while Nikon’s newer Arneo coating has been added to deal with incident light entering the lens vertically.

Living up to its name, the Noct has been designed with night photography in mind. Nikon says that the lens will reproduce point light sources faithfully across the entire frame, without the smearing effects of sagittal coma flare.

Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements 2020 arrive with new AI-powered tools

Adobe has released Photoshop Elements 2020 and Premiere Elements 2020, adding a number of new features and capabilities powered by the company’s Adobe Sensei AI, including automatic selection, skin smoothing, colorization, new Auto Creations and more, as detailed in an announcment blog post.

Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements are Adobe’s entry-level versions of its products, offering general consumers access to some of the tools and capabilities found in these products, but with less complexity and lower prices at $ 99.99 each for a full software license.

The Photoshop Elements 2020 update brings a number of new features, including new Pattern Brush, B&W Selection, Depth of Field, and Painterly effects for Auto Creations, support for automatically colorizing black-and-white images using AI, automatic skin smoothing, and one-click subject selection.

The updated software also enables users to remove unwanted objects from images, add heart and star patterns to photos, and search for content via Smart Tags. Beyond that, the software has received general performance enhancements, as well as support for HEIF images and HEVC videos. For customers located in the United States, Photoshop Elements now also supports directly ordering prints and other items through the Fujifilm Prints and Gifts service.

Joining the big Photoshop Elements 2020 update is the new Premiere Elements 2020, an update that adds simplified noise reduction, a sky replacement tool, support for turning images and videos into dynamic time-lapses, and a tool that replaces the black bars in vertical videos with a fill that matches the video, as seen below.

As with the new version of Photoshop Elements, this Premiere Elements update also adds Smart Tag search and support for HEIF/HEVC formats. The software also supports searching videos for specific people using Sensei’s face-matching capabilities. Finally, Premiere Elements now includes five guided edits that help users modify their videos.

In addition to the individual $ 99.99 license price, Adobe offers Photoshop Elements 2020 and Premiere Elements 2020 bundled for $ 149.99. Existing customers can upgrade either of the new products for $ 79.99 or both for a total of $ 119.99.

‘Everybody Street’ documentary free streaming options arrive on YouTube, Prime Video

Cheryl Dunn’s 2013 street photography documentary Everybody Street is now available to stream on YouTube and on Amazon Prime Video. The YouTube stream is ad-supported and the Prime Video option requires an Amazon Prime subscription. Alternatively, viewers can purchase the documentary on DVD. Everybody Street was previously only available on-demand through Vimeo.

The documentary, which enjoys a healthy 7.7-star rating on IMDb, focuses on New York street photographers Bruce Davidson, Ricky Powell, Mary Ellen Mark, Elliott Erwitt, and others, covering their life and work in the city.

Irix 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 lens preorders arrive ahead of December release

IRIX has launched its 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 full-frame DSLR lens for preorder. The model measures 8.7 x 13.5cm / 3.4 x 5.3in, weighs 840g / 29.6oz, and features 12 elements in 9 groups, a 0.345m minimum focusing distance, 77mm filter size, focus lock, a detachable Arca Swiss lens collar, and a detachable lens hood.

The 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 lens includes a Neutrino coating to minimize ghosting and light flares resulting in improved color fidelity and contrast. IRIX used its Dragonfly finish for weather sealing against moisture and dust. As stated in late September when the lens was announced, IRIX claims its new lens has nearly zero distortion at 0.1-percent.

The new 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 lens is offered in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Pentax K mount options, each priced at $ 595 USD. The model can now be preordered from B&H Photo, where the shipment start date is listed as December 26, 2018.

Sony’s 400mm F2.8 G-Master will arrive in September for $12,000

Sony’s previously announced 400mm F2.8 GM OSS received a full introduction today. The pro-grade lens will ship in September for $ 12,000, and aims to deliver superior autofocus and handling. The lens is a (relatively speaking) light 2.7kg / 6.4lb, and Sony claims it’s well-balanced for monopod or even handheld shooting. The company also says that its FE 400mm takes advantage of two new linear motors with 5x faster tracking performance on the a9 compared to the 300mm F.8 G2.

Unlike the 500mm F4 for A-mount, which was front heavy, most of the glass in the new 400mm F2.8 GM is in the center and rear of the lens.

Optical stabilization is offered in three different modes, the third of which is designed to make framing easier when following moving subjects. The lens is made of magnesium alloy for durability, and a drop-in filter slot accepts 40.5mm filters – including a new circular polarizing filter that will go on sale in December.

Firmware version 3.0 for the a9 is also announced, mainly adding support for the 400mm as well as the ability to record camera serial numbers to EXIF data.
