Guerrilla Apparel: Pirate Printers Press Clothes to Painted Public Surfaces

07 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

A Berlin street art collective is hitting the streets of Europe again, touring major cities to turn infrastructural patterns into (quite literal) streetwear across the continent. Each of their unique creations is tied to public art and design patterns often overlooked as we walk by (or on top of) them.

Raubdruckerin (AKA Pirate Printer) press apparel to painted street objects featuring a level of relief, soaking up the top layer to create impressions of manhole covers, vents, grates, bike lane symbols and just about anything else with some depth to it.

In German, there is some nuance to their name as well: ‘Rauber’ means both pirate and robber, while “drucken” is both press and print. Effectively, they press and steal patterns (though since their source material is quite literally in the public domain, no one so far seems to mind).

Like graffiti artists or mobile street painters with portable canvasses, their work tends to draw a crowd and has a performative aspect to it by its nature. In turn, they aim to raise awareness of overlooked and everyday design objects.

So far they have made their way through Amsterdam, Athens, Paris and Lisbon. In each location, they press cotton bags and apparel to street surfaces coated in eco-friendly ink, then wash up behind themselves to leave no trace.

Digital Knitting Machine: Kniterate is a 3D Printer for Custom Apparel

23 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Gaming & Computing & Technology. ]

Borrowing logic from the 3D printing industry, Kniterate lets users turn ideas and designs from digital files to one-off wearable garments in hours. Able to “print” shirts, scarves, sweaters, dresses and more, the machine is aimed at enabling customized creations as well as rapid prototyping.

Compact, portable and affordable, the gadget itself links into computer and mobile apps – creatives can build out ideas in Photoshop, build them in Kniterate’s device-specific application, then send them to straight to production with the touch of a button.

The application comes with a number of preset patterns that can be used but the intuitive interface is also designed to allow for easy from-scratch creations, even by people with limited digital design experience. Even in cases there the final product will be made via other methods or materials, this machine allows for iterative design experiments to test size, fit and styles.

The system is also designed to reduce waste from off-cut materials, printing with the exact amount of material needed to make a particular piece. The device can carry up to six yarns at a time to span an array of colors and materials – it is also made to be compatible with off-the-shelf yarns, making it more flexible and affordable than printers (often designed to make money from material sales rather than the machines themselves).

Adobe Stock Apparel line celebrates the worst of stock photography

17 Sep

Adobe is promoting its stock photo service with a ‘limited edition clothing line’ celebrating such stock photo atrocities as ‘laughing woman eating healthy vegetable salad’ and ‘smiling seniors using laptop.’ The campaign pokes fun at famously bad images that services like Shutterstock are rife with, and commemorates the images by putting them on t-shirts and sweatshirts. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your views on ironic t-shirts, none if it is actually for sale, but you can view the whole collection in a mock lookbook.

The promotion rests on the premise that Adobe Stock weeds out the so-called low quality images found in other stock websites, saving creatives from spending time sifting through the cheesiest of photos. It’s also worth noting this comes just after the news that Shutterstock is now offering a Photoshop plugin, making it possible for designers to access their extensive collections within Adobe’s own software.

Invisible Apparel: Material-Free Dresses Made of Light

04 Feb

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

light art dress

Combining light art photography and high fashion, these show-stopping, runway-worthy gowns are invisible until completed, and manufactured without physical material.

Atton Conrad sets the models in pitch-black rooms, then writes with lights around them, resulting in a flowing and ephemeral slow-captured creation that is only visible after each shot is finished.

Conrad has worked extensively in both of the fields found intersecting here, as a veteran photographer and light artist alike. “London born, Belfast bred and originally set for a career in science, the inherited genes from an artist father & actress mother prevailed. He made for the bright lights of his birth city to persue his love of photography.” He was, as it were, drawn to the light – limelight, spotlight, and lighting itself.

Of his work, he says that “it started with light trails, but grew far beyond that, as i developed my methodology and custom designed ‘light brushes’ I realised that the techniques could give me incredibly fine control over light and texture, to an unique almost hyperreal result. I have always been known for my classic lighting, and still take great pleasure in it, but this took it a completely fresh direction.”
