2019 Pulitzer Prize photography award winners announced for Breaking News, Feature Photography

The 2019 Pulitzer Prize winners have been announced, including two in their respective photography categories: the photography staff of Reuters for Breaking News Photography and Lorenzo Tugnoli of The Washington Post for Feature Photography. Both winners have been awarded $ 15,000 each.

The photography staff of Reuters was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for their ‘vivid and startling visual narrative of the urgency, desperation and sadness of migrants as they journeyed to the U.S. from Central and South America,’ it was announced. The photography staff of Reuters was awarded the Feature Photography Pulitzer Prize in 2018, as well. Below is a gallery of the winning photographs in the Breaking News Photography category:

Reuters congratulated the winners on Monday. The publication’s Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler said in a statement:

While it’s gratifying to be recognized for the work, public attention should be focused more on the people about whom we report than on us: in this case, the Rohingya and the Central American migrants.

In addition, Lorenzo Tugnoli of The Washington Post was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his ‘brilliant photo storytelling of the tragic famine in Yemen, shown through images in which beauty and composure are intertwined with devastation.’ The work was moved from the Breaking News Photography to the Feature Photography category by the Pulitzer jury. Tugnoli was joined by Craig F. Walker of The Boston Globe and Maggie Steber and Lynn Johnson of National Geographic, who were nominated as finalists. In the Breaking News Photography category, the photography staff of Associated Press and Noah Berger, John Locher and Ringo H. W. Chiu of Associated Press were nominated as finalists.

Samyang has announced the AF 85mm F1.4 FE lens for full-frame Sony cameras

Samyang has announced the AF 85mm F1.4 FE, an autofocus prime lens designed for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The 85mm F1.4 FE is Samyang’s sixth autofocus lens for Sony full-frame cameras since first unveiling a pair back in 2016. Powering the autofocus is Samyang’s Dual Linear Sonic Motor (DLSM) that uses ultrasonic vibrations to drive the focusing mechanism.

The lens is constructed of 11 elements in 8 groups, including one Extra Low Dispersion (ED) and four High Refractive (HR) elements, and features a nine-blade aperture diaphragm. Its aluminum body is weather sealed to protect against rain and dust and features a Samyang’s Ultra Multi Coating (UMC) on its optical elements.

The minimum focusing distance is 0.9m / 1.95ft and uses a 77mm filter thread. It measures in at 99.5mm / 3.9in long and weighs 568g / 1.25lbs. Below is a sample gallery of images provided by Samyang:

Newly announced microSD Express format offers transfer speeds up to 950MBps

The SD Association has launched the microSD Express format, bringing extremely fast read speeds of up to 985 MBps to microSD cards — approximately 10 times faster than current high-end cards are capable of.

Like the SD Express format, microSD Express uses the NVMe 1.3 and PCIe 3.1 interfaces that are deployed in PC computers to power high-speed SSD drives. This technology is integrated into the second row of pins on the card. This means microSD Express cards will work at full speed on compatible devices but will also be backward compatible.

The new standard will not only provide much higher transfer speeds but also reduce power consumption compared to regular microSD cards, thanks to support for the low-power sub-states (L1.1 and L1.2) of PCIe v3.1.

High-speed and high-capacity microSD card could be very useful in all sorts of applications, from automotive to mobile, but in the imaging realm might provide most value to video shooters who need the capability to shoot 360-degree and/or Raw footage without being limited by storage.

That said, we are likely still some time away from manufacturers launching any microSD Express cards and compatible devices. In the meantime more information is available in the video above and the official press release on sdcard.org.

Andi – The zoom is EXACTLY what I need right now. My daughter, who has cerebral palsy, has been a swimmer since she was 7. I have always been able to get decent action shots indoors in dim lighting using either a 50mm or 85mm prime lens, but,,, She has been in development camp with US Paralympics coaches and decided this year to commit to swim because she wants to make the US Paralympic Team (and she has a shot – she became the first paraswimmer in state history to compete in breaststroke two weeks ago in our state’s high school swimming championships and will swim in the Canadian-American Paraswimming Championships and probably the World Para-swimming World Series in 2019). Because she is now swimming in much larger venues, I need a lens with better reach than the primes I’ve used in the past, but these venues also have better lighting so I can get away with an f4.5-6.3 and still get decent action shots.

Shannan – It would be DREAMY to win either of these fantastic lenses! A decade ago I learned about an organization called Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. My daughter had been given a fatal diagnosis and NILMDTS sent a photographer to the hospital to take photos of our sweet baby as she died. I cherish those photos and am so grateful to have them. I have been working toward volunteering as a photographer for NILMDTS and the 45mm F013 would be a go-to lens to give these families the photos that they will cherish as much as I do. Hospital rooms are tight, between the equipment, staff and families and I don’t have the space for a tripod. Tamron’s fantastic VC will help me offer tack sharp images of these sweet babies and the Ultrasonic Silent Drive will help me melt into the background so I don’t disturb the event.

Both lenses would be a great addition to my backpack as well! I love shooting nature and backpacking off trail on rugged terrain to capture the fog rolling in or a babbling brook. I have been putting off buying a telephoto lens for a while because every once counts when you are backpacking! But Tamron has made it accessible without losing quality. The VC and the moisture resistant construction are also a must. I sometimes leave the tripod at camp if I have to climb to a vista. The VC on the 100-400mm A035 is amazing and would allow me to leave that tripod back with more confidence. And, like I said, the moisture resistant construction will let me focus on the shot instead of bagging up!

Thank you for making quality glass and giving me the opportunity to get my hands on some!

New ‘EZ’ E-6 film developer announced under Edwal brand

On the back of the re-introduction of some Kodak Ektachrome films a U.S. photographic company has announced it will begin sales of its own slide developing kits under the Edwal brand. Edwal has been associated with photo chemistry for some time, and US photographic distributor OmegaBrandess owns the rights to the name and intends to produce E-6 chemistry kits aimed at making transparency development easier for the home user.

The Edwal kits will contain developer, color developer and a single bleach/fix solution, and will be available in 1-quart/946ml and 1-gallon/3.8l sizes. The company claims the chemicals offer users some degree of flexibility with development times and the temperature of the solutions without adverse effects on the film.

Finalists in Taylor Wessing portrait prize announced

London’s National Portrait Gallery has released the shortlist for its annual Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, ahead of the winner being announced in October. The competition is open to professionals as well as amateur photographers, and carries a top prize of £15,000 (approx. $ 19k). The winner and shortlisted images, along with selected others, make up an exhibition that runs at the NPG for four months and an accompanying catalogue.

The print-only competition is sometimes controversial in its choices, and gave birth to the Portrait Salon – an independent group that only exhibits images rejected by the Taylor Wessing competition.

Sony Cyber-shot HX95 and HX99 compact high-zoom 4K cameras announced in Europe

For European customers, Sony has launched the Cyber-shot HX95 and HX99, a pair of slim, compact high-zoom cameras featuring the BIONZ X image processing engine, front-end LSI and 4K video recording. Both models are nearly identical, each sporting a 180-degree tiltable LCD, OLED Tru-Finder, and 1/2.3″ Exmor R 18MP CMOS sensor.

Both the Cyber-shot HX95 and HX99 feature a ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-720mm High Magnification Zoom lens, Optical SteadShot image stabilization, Zoom Assist, and auto focus speeds as fast as 0.09 seconds. Both models support 4K video recording at 3840 x 2160.

The Cyber-shot HX99 camera differs from the HX95 in a few ways, one of which is an OLED Tru-Finder with a control ring versus the HX95’s retractable viewfinder. The HX99 also features a control ring for customized camera functions, Touch Shutter, Touch Focus, and a focus point shifting function called Touch Pad.

Both the HX99 (€520 / £450) and the HX95 (€500 / £430) will be available in Europe starting October 2018.

Pricing and availability announced for ‘compact’ Nikon 500mm F5.6E

Nikon has gone public with pricing and availability for its previously-announced AF-S Nikkor 500mm F5.6E PF ED VR lens. The use of a Phase Fresnel element allows for a smaller and lighter lens design, in theory allowing the 500mm F5.6 to be used handheld somewhat comfortably. The lens will be available September 13th for $ 3600.

MELVILLE, NY (AUGUST 23, 2018 AT 1:01 A.M. EDT) –Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, a fixed focal length super-telephoto lens compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras.

The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is a high-performance, FX-format, super-telephoto lens that supports 500 mm focal length. The adoption of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element has significantly reduced the size and weight of the lens, making hand-held super-telephoto photography easier and more enjoyable.

With a maximum diameter of 106 mm and length of 237 mm, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, which weighs 1,460g (roughly the same weight as the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR) is significantly lighter than previous500mm lenses which can typically weigh up to more than 3,000g. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is designed with consideration to dust- and drip- resistance, which in addition to the fluorine coat applied to the front lens surface, allows greater agility when shooting.

The use of one PF lens element and three ED glass elements enables extremely sharp and detailed rendering that is compatible with high pixel-count digital cameras. In addition, the materials used in the new PF lens element have been developed effectively to reduce PF (diffraction) flare, allowing light sources to be reproduced in near-original colors. In combination with Nikon’s coating technologies, such as the Nano Crystal Coat, effective in controlling ghost and flare, extremely clear images are achieved.

AF speed has been increased by making lens elements in the focusing group lighter. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is equipped with a VR mechanism that offers camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.01-stop increase in shutter speed. The SPORT VR mode that has been adopted is especially effective when photographing fast-moving and unpredictable subjects such as wild birds, or in scenes such as sporting events. The stabilization of the image displayed in the viewfinder is also an effective feature for recording movies.

Additionally, the use of the Mount Adapter FTZ will allow the lens to be used with mirrorless cameras Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 6, also announced today. Users will be able to enjoy super-telephoto shooting at the 500 mm focal length with a system that is even more compact than ever before.

We are also planning to release the Dot Sight DF-M1, an accessory that is highly effective with super-telephoto photography. With super-telephoto shooting, a narrow field of view in the viewfinder tends to be made visible – making it easy to lose track of the subject. The Dot Sight DF-M1 makes it easy to keep track of the intended subject within the frame, even if the subject exhibits sudden movement.

PF (Phase Fresnel) Lens Elements
The PF (Phase Fresnel) lens, developed by Nikon, effectively compensates chromatic aberration, utilizing the photo diffraction phenomenon2. It provides superior chromatic aberration compensation performance when combined with a normal glass lens. Compared to many general camera lenses that employ an optical system using the photorefractive phenomenon, a remarkably compact and lightweight body can be attained with fewer lens elements.

2018 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year winners

Nature 1st Place – and Grand Prize winner

Reiko Takahashi’s image of a humpback whale calf’s tail has been named Grand Prize winner of this year’s National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year contest. Her caption for the photo reads:

I was fortunate to have encountered a humpback whale with her calf on my first day snorkeling near Japan’s Kumejima Island. Most of the time, the calf stayed close to her mom. At one point, the calf began jumping and tapping its tail on the water near us—it was very friendly and curious. Finally, the mother, who was watching nearby, came to pick up the calf and swim away. I fell in love completely with the calf and it’s very energetic, large and beautiful tail.

Winners in three categories have also been chosen, from over 13,000 total entries. Takahashi’s photo, titled Mermaid, also took first place in the Nature category – Cities and People round out the categories.

Thousands of flamingos are seen taking off from the colorful Lake Natron in Tanzania. Before taking off, flamingos need to take a short run on water to build up some speed. At that moment, their long, red legs create a series of water ripples on the surface of the lake. Looking down from the helicopter, these ripple lines look like giant aquatic plants flowing in the water. This photo was taken from a helicopter.

These natural sand towers, capped with large stones, are known as the Earth Pyramids of Platten. They are situated in Northern Italy’s South Tyrol region. Formed centuries ago after several storms and landslides, these land formations look like a landscape from outer space and continuously change over the years and, more accurately, over seasons. This natural phenomenon is the result of a continuous alternation between periods of torrential rain and drought, which have caused the erosion of the terrain and the formation of these pinnacles. As the seasons change, the temperatures move between extremes and storms affect the area, pyramids disappear over time, while new pinnacles form as well.

This is a view of the main street from a tram in Nagasaki on a rainy day. The tram is vintage, but retrofitted with modern ticketing equipment. A conductor is no longer on board—only the lone driver. The quiet streetscape seen through the front windshield of the tram somehow caught my attention. This view presents quite a contrast to busy urban centers in Japan, such as Tokyo and Osaka. The ride on a vintage tram through the relatively quiet main street was a memorable experience during our week-long visit to the historic city of Nagasaki.

Teotihuacan means ‘the place where the gods were created,’ and that’s the exact feeling visitors have when they walk along the Avenue of the Dead at this Mexican archeological site. This pyramid was dedicated to the god of Sun, and I found it mesmerizing how the rising sun in the picture conquered just half the image, while the other half is in the shadows. I have always loved archeology and ancient civilizations, so I couldn’t wait to visit Mexico and explore the remains of the pre-Columbian civilization. I planned my visit to Teotihuacan at sunrise, to get a combination of golden sunlight, play of shadows, and few crowds around. I flew my drone to see if the image I had in my mind was really out there: luckily for me, this frame was just waiting for my camera!

On an early morning, I wanted to photograph the fog, which is epic in Dubai every year from December to January—and almost every photographer’s dream in this part of the world. Sadly, I could not get access to the rooftop and so I peeped through the glazed window on a lower floor. I was overwhelmed and excited to see how beautiful the city looks, and my excitement was quadrupled as soon as I saw the reflection of the road and building on the building that I was in. I immediately opened the window to the maximum permissible amount and clicked a single shot with stretched hands.

In this photo, I tried to bring the intense and stacked living conditions that Hong Kong is famous for into perspective for the viewer. With so many people living in small spaces, it’s strange to see all these amenities empty. As a solo traveler, I’m often alone in crowds and this photo resonates with me. I barely scratched the surface of this incredible urban environment, but this image really summarizes my experience here.

For a long time, I have been fascinated by the ancient Mongolian method of hunting with Golden Eagles. In early 2018, I followed one family of eagle hunters during their migration from winter camp to spring camp. Mongolia is sparsely populated, but the inhabitants have a very hospitable and welcoming culture. Tea for Kazakh culture is one of the attributes of hospitality. Tea isn’t just a drink, but a mix of tradition, culture, relaxation, ceremony, and pleasure. Damel, seen here wrapped in heavy fur clothes, drinks a cup of tea to keep warm from the chilly temperatures in Western Mongolia.

Since 2016, I’ve been involved with Haitian immigrants and refugees living in my city, Estrela. I have become friends with some families, and especially with twin sisters, Leïda and Laëlle. They say living in Brazil is like living in paradise—very different from the reality of their country of origin. They dream of becoming models and teachers, as a way to earn money to bring their other relatives from Haiti to Brazil, to live all near one another. On this day, they were playing in front of their home, improvising exercises to develop their imagination and creativity, as if they were actresses, and playing an imitation game with poses. Laëlle reached for Leida’s face and lifted her head up, showing her where she should look. At this brief moment, I took the photo.

This photograph was taken from Dhaka’s airport rail station during the Eid vacation. People were returning to their village homes to spend Eid with families, and the rush at the last hour was immense. One man caught my attention: he was dangling on a train’s handle with his family, trying to get inside the train. At that time, rain started and the train began to slowly move. The family had tickets to board the train, but couldn’t get to their seats. There are many people like him, who come to Dhaka for work—leaving their families and home villages—so when they get vacation, they don’t want to miss the opportunity to spend time with dear ones, no matter what.

€80K Oskar Barnack Award finalists announced

Leica has released details of the twelve finalists for this year’s Leica Oskar Barnack Award, one of who will take the €35,000 (approx. $ 41,000) top prize. Organizers say that 2500 photographers submitted work to the competition this year, and that 110 countries are represented in the contest that looked for portfolios of 10-12 images demonstrating ‘the relationship between man and the environment in the most graphic form’.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Berlin in October, with the best portfolio earning the photographer a €25,000 cash prize as well as €10,000 of Leica M equipment. The best new photographer will win an M camera and lens kit of the same value along with €10,000, and the ten runner-ups will receive €2500.

Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2018: The twelve finalists have been chosen

During European Month of Photography (EMOP, Berlin), the finalists’ project portfolios will be presented in a major exhibition in the ‘Neuen Schule für Fotografie Berlin’ from 10th to 31st October 2018

The twelve finalists of this year’s Leica Oskar Barnack Award (LOBA) have been chosen. The complete portfolios from the categories ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Award’ and ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Award Newcomer’ can now be viewed at www.leica-oskar-barnack-award.com

This year, around 2,500 photographers from a total of 110 different countries submitted entries to the LOBA competition.

This year, the jury was again impressed by the large number of entrants and the high quality of the portfolios entered in the competition. “With every new year of the competition, it is remarkable to see how intensely and creatively the entrants fulfil the thematic requirements of the LOBA. We have consciously maintained the theme of ‘the relationship between people and their environment’ since the first request for entries to the LOBA competition in 1979. Today, this theme remains as valid as it was in the past – in fact, we could even say that it is now more important than ever before”, says Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director & Chief Representative Leica Galleries International.

In addition to Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, the members of this year’s LOBA jury were:

  • Markus Hartmann, Hartmann Projects (Germany)
  • Terje Abusdal, Photographer & LOBA winner 2017 (Norway)
  • Christian Wiesner, Artistic Director, Paris Photo (France)

The winners and finalists of the LOBA will be honoured in the course of a formal ceremony in Berlin on 10th October. The portfolios of all twelve finalists will then be on view from 10th to 31st October 2018 at a major exhibition in the ‘Neuen Schule für Fotografie’, Brunnenstrasse 188-190, 10119 Berlin. The LOBA Catalogue 2018, presenting the winners and finalists in detail with comprehensive portfolios and interview, will be published to accompany the exhibition.

With prizes amounting to a total cash value of around 80,000 euros, the LOBA is one of the industry’s most prestigious photographic competitions. The winner in the main category will be honoured with a cash prize of 25,000 euros and Leica M-System equipment (a camera and lens) valued at an additional 10,000 euros. The winner of the Newcomer Award will be honoured with a cash prize of 10,000 euros and will also be presented with a Leica rangefinder camera and lens. In addition to the two main categories, ten further submissions to the competition will each be honoured with prizes of 2,500 euros.
