7Artisans will ‘soon’ announce a ~$200 50mm F0.95 lens for APS-C mirrorless camera systems

Chinese optics manufacturer 7Artisans is set to release a new 50mm F0.95 APS-C lens for EOS-M, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds (MFT), Nikon Z and Sony E mount camera systems.

The fully-manual lens is expected to retail for around $ 200. It will feature a metal build and its optical design consists of seven elements in five groups, including two ultra-low dispersion elements. It’ll have a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7”), offer a de-clicked aperture, use a 13-blade aperture diaphragm, and have a 62mm front filter thread.

The lens will measure 67.5mm (2.7″) long and weigh 416g (14.7 oz). Below is a video review from YouTube channel InfoFotografi (with English subtitles):

Sony to announce a new camera in the next 24 hours

Earlier this month, Sony was set to release a new camera. However, the July 7th announcement was postponed for unspecified reasons. At the time, no information was provided as to when we could expect the new camera, but Sony has updated its website to announce the product will be released via a YouTube Premiere at 23:00 JST on July 27, 2021 (10am EDT, 7am PDT July 27).

The updated graphic shows the same ‘Capture more of your world’ tagline seen in the original announcement as well as a microphone windscreen atop a rainbow-gradient background. No further information is provided, but the graphic does confirm we will see a new camera within the next 24 hours (barring a last-minute postponement).

Canon to “Soon” Announce Three New RF Lenses (Including the 14-35mm f/4L)

Canon to announce 3 new RF lenses

Over the next handful of months, Canon will release at least three new RF-mount lenses, according to Canon Rumors. They are:

  • The Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM
  • The Canon RF 70-400mm IS USM (maximum aperture unknown, but potentially f/5.6-7.1)
  • The Canon RF 16mm f/2.8

While the new glass is unconfirmed by Canon, Canon Rumors shares a few details (as well as some helpful guesses). 

Let’s take a closer look at each item, starting with:

Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM

As explained by Canon Rumors, “expect to see a Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM as a little brother to the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM.” 

On the wide end, the lens will offer a breathtaking perspective for landscapes, urban scenics, and architectural photos; on the long end, the lens will feature a conventional 35mm focal length, perfect for tighter landscapes and even the occasional portrait. Plus, you’ll get a respectable f/4 maximum aperture – not enough for easy ultra-shallow depth of field effects or astrophotography, but absolutely usable for standard landscape scenarios assuming you bring your tripod.

Note that the 14-35mm will feature Canon’s “L” lens designation, so you can expect top-notch image quality rivaling some of the best glass on the market. Add in the image stabilization, and you’ve got yourself a relatively versatile wide-angle zoom, perfect for landscape photographers, travel photographers, and more.

Canon RF 70-400mm (maybe f/5.6-7.1) IS USM

The RF 70-400mm will be Canon’s second super-telephoto zoom designed for the RF mount, following in the footsteps of the powerful RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1. 

But while the 100-500mm is an L lens – designed for professionals and with a price to match – the 70-400mm will likely be a more casual, portable option. According to Canon Rumors, there’s no “L” label on the 70-400mm, though you can expect image stabilization and a (consistently fast) USM autofocusing motor for wildlife and sports. 

While I can only speculate, I suspect the 70-400mm is designed for frequent travelers in need of a portable “do-anything” telephoto, as well as for enthusiast bird and wildlife photographers. Interestingly, Canon offers an EF-mount counterpart, the much-loved 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM. Yet the 100-400mm is an L lens, offers an f/5.6 maximum aperture at 400mm, and is very pricey, none of which is likely for the 70-400mm. It’ll be interesting to see how the two lenses stack up and whether Canon’s new lens will venture into the sub-$ 1000 “budget” superzoom range.

Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 

The RF 16mm f/2.8 “is a non-L prime lens,” explains Canon Rumors, and will be especially useful as “a nice and compact 25mm f/2.8…if an APS-C RF-mount camera is coming.”

Still, expect a lens compatible with Canon’s full-frame mirrorless stable. At 16mm, you’ll capture beautiful landscapes and architecture, as well as travel and street photos with an unusually wide perspective. And thanks to the f/2.8 aperture, the RF 16mm should be suitable for serious astrophotography. 

At the very least, you can expect a relatively inexpensive, compact lens for Canon’s up-and-coming mirrorless shooters.

Canon to announce three new lenses: final words

Assuming Canon can deliver on expectations discussed above, these three lenses should satisfy plenty of enthusiasts and even the occasional professional. 

If you’re a photographer seeking a nice wide-angle perspective for serious landscape work, keep an eye out for the RF 14-35mm, which will cover all but the widest of landscape focal lengths and offer top-notch image quality to boot. 

For enthusiasts in need of an all-purpose telephoto zoom, the 70-400mm will be the lens to beat, though I’d recommend you consider image quality reports before buying.

And if you’re in need of a compact, lightweight, ultra-wide prime, the 16mm f/2.8 should be worth a look.

Nikon to Announce the Zfc, a Retro Mirrorless Camera, This Summer

Nikon to announce the retro mirrorless Zfc

For months, we’ve had hints of a second Nikon Z-mount APS-C camera, frequently dubbed the “Z30” – and according to Nikon Rumors, that camera “is real and will be announced soon.”

But it will not be a standard, entry-level APS-C camera to match the Nikon Z50 or the Nikon D3500. Instead, the new Nikon mirrorless model, now referred to as the “Nikon Zfc,” will be a retro-style camera reminiscent of 20th-century film bodies as well as Nikon’s only retro DSLR, the Df:

Here’s what you can expect in terms of design, based on Nikon Rumors reporting:

  • Mechanical dials (likely for ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation)
  • A fully-articulating screen
  • A “very thin camera body without a handgrip” and a “Nikon Df-inspired design”
  • “Shape and handling similar to old Nikon FM cameras”

Of course, any mirrorless model from Nikon will undoubtedly pack Nikon’s latest and greatest technology, from Eye AF and fast continuous shooting speeds to a powerful electronic viewfinder and an articulating touchscreen. And Nikon Rumors does claim the Zfc will offer capabilities similar to that of the Z50, a robust but well-priced APS-C camera featuring a respectable 21 MP sensor and an 11 frames-per-second burst mode.

But as film (and Fujifilm) shooters know, the photography experience on a retro-style body is wildly different from what you get on a standard DSLR or mirrorless camera. I’m a big fan of film-inspired designs, myself – the dials force you to slow down and really appreciate your settings, plus they make everything feel more real. And with the Zfc, you’ll get the best of both worlds: the tactile, mechanical ergonomics of a film camera, combined with the impressive speed and efficiency of a 2021 mirrorless camera.

While the Zfc is still only a rumored camera, and while the announcement and release date are technically unknown, Nikon Rumors is pushing a June 28th announcement date and expects the camera to begin shipping on July 31st.

The older Nikon Z50 currently sells for around $ 850 USD, body only, or $ 900 USD with a basic kit lens, and you can expect a slightly higher price for the Nikon Zfc; Nikon Rumors claims $ 999 USD (with a kit lens included).

So keep an eye out for the Nikon Zfc announcement later this month, especially if you like the sound of a reasonably priced, retro-style camera that can use Nikon Z lenses!

Canon to Announce a New Camera and “Many, Many Lenses”

Canon to announce a new camera and "many, many lenses"

Canon will soon be announcing “more lenses at once than ever before,” according to the often-reliable Canon Rumors.

This information comes from an unnamed source “with a stellar track record.” 

According to CR’s source, “Canon is going to make a ‘massive splash with a new camera and many, many lenses.’” And while the source – and Canon Rumors – offered no information as to which lenses and camera this will be, we can certainly speculate, based on the Canon RF lens roadmap and leaked information on upcoming Canon mirrorless models.

So what gear can we expect from Canon? And when can we expect it?

Regarding lenses: 

Canon’s leaked roadmap is pretty sizable, featuring a whopping 15 lenses to be released over the next couple of years:

  • Canon TS-R 14mm f/4L
  • Canon TS-R 24mm f/3.5L
  • Canon RF 10-24mm f/4L USM
  • Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon RF 18-45mm f/4-5.6 IS STM
  • Canon RF 100-400mm f/5-6-7.1 IS USM
  • Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L USM
  • Canon RF 135mm f/1.4L USM
  • Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro
  • Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
  • Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
  • Canon RF 500mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon RF 600mm f/4L IS USM
  • Canon RF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM
  • Canon RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM

As you can see, Canon’s new lenses cater to wide-angle landscape shooters and sports/wildlife super-telephoto photographers, with a few fast primes sprinkled in. 

I could certainly see Canon announcing most or all of the super-telephoto glass in one breath, especially if their release coincides with the announcement of Canon’s flagship, sports-focused mirrorless camera, the highly-anticipated EOS R1. 

And previously, Canon Rumors did claim that the EOS R1 will “show its face in 2021” – and that the R1 will likely be teased prior to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. 

So does Canon’s “massive splash” announcement refer to a summer reveal of the EOS R1 plus a series of super telephotos? This seems plausible; releasing sports- and wildlife-focused super-telephoto lenses alongside Canon’s highest-performance mirrorless model to date certainly makes sense, though hopefully Canon will include a couple of non-specialist lenses to keep other users satisfied. 

Another camera possibility is an EOS R5s, rumored to pack 90+ megapixels into a 35mm sensor, or an APS-C RF-mount EOS R7, designed as a mirrorless successor to Canon’s popular 7D lineup.

Regardless, I do think a summer 2021 announcement date is likely, especially given Canon’s current “supply chain and manufacturing issues.”

Sony to Announce “the One Never Seen” on January 26th

Last week, Sony offered a mysterious announcement, displaying only the words, “The one never seen,” as well as a date, January 26th, 2021, 10 AM EST.

The title of the YouTube countdown reads, “New product announcement on January 26th, 2021.” And the caption simply states to “be ready for the announcement of the new Alpha.”

In other words:

We should have a new Sony Alpha mirrorless model – and our first compelling camera reveal of 2021 – before the week is out. 

But what camera is this new Alpha, the “one never seen”? What model is Sony teasing?

Unfortunately, we have no official knowledge, and Sony will undoubtedly stay silent until 10 AM on January 26th. But the internet has been abuzz with speculation, and plenty of suggestions have been thrown around regarding the identity of the new camera, including:

  • A Sony a9 III
  • A Sony a7 IV
  • A medium format camera

According to SonyAlphaRumors, the new kit is most likely the A9 III, which will potentially offer 8K/30p – hence the “one never seen” designation, because up until this point, Sony has restricted their Alpha models to 4K (with even the video-centric Sony a7S III maxing out at 4K/120p). 

8K capabilities do come with significant resolution requirements. The Canon EOS R5, for instance, sits at 45 MP, and the Sony a9 III may overshoot this by a few megapixels (SonyAlphaRumors suggests a possible 50 MP sensor).

The Sony a9 and a9 II are action photography cameras through and through, offering blazing-fast autofocus and exceptional continuous shooting speeds, but at the cost of resolution. Both cameras sit at an “average” 24 megapixels, so a jump to 8K might even call for a doubling of the current resolution count.

Regardless, a 50-megapixel camera with professional-level action chops will certainly satisfy some photographers, assuming they can afford the (likely exorbitant) price. 

So make sure you check out Sony’s announcement on January 26th at 10 EST. Whatever Sony unveils, it’s bound to be exciting – and only the start of a thrilling 2021!

Canon to Announce the EOS M50 Mark II With 32.5 MP, 14 FPS

2020 is Canon’s year.

First we get the EOS R5 and R6, two powerhouse cameras that have revolutionized Canon’s mirrorless lineup (and, in some ways, the world of mirrorless more generally).

And now it looks like we’ll be seeing another impressive mirrorless model before the year is out, this time as an addition to Canon’s APS-C mirrorless arsenal:

The EOS M50 Mark II, the successor to the fantastic EOS M50.

While the EOS M50 Mark II’s release isn’t yet official, camera product listings have prompted Canon Rumors to declare that the new mirrorless body is “confirmed.”

And according to Canon Rumors, the EOS M50 Mark II will include a 32.5 MP sensor (up from 24 MP on the EOS M50), as well as improved autofocus, 14 frames-per-second continuous shooting (compared to 10 fps on the EOS M50), 4K/60p capabilities without a crop, one SD card slot, and a 3.69M-dot electronic viewfinder (up from the 2.36M-dot EVF on the EOS M50). You can also expect compatibility (via an adapter) with Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses, though Canon also offers a decent range of EF-M glass.

In other words, the EOS M50 Mark II will be impressive indeed. Photographers will be able to harness the detail of a 30+ megapixel sensor while maintaining the speed of an action camera. And while we don’t know if the 14 fps specification only applies when using AF-S autofocus, worst-case scenario puts the EOS M50 Mark II at around 10 fps when set to AF-C, which is not bad at all for serious action shooters.

Personally, I’m most looking forward to the electronic viewfinder. I find EVFs below 3.69M-dot tough to use, and it’s hard to overstate the value of a good electronic viewfinder. After all, it’s what defines your entire shooting experience, especially if you’re the type that shoots frequently through the viewfinder rather than working with Live View on the rear LCD.

Overall, the EOS M50 Mark II appears to be something of an all-around camera for beginners and intermediate photographers (while still perfectly capable of professional-quality shots). And the 4K/60p video is a nice addition for hybrid shooters and vloggers, especially given the limitations of the EOS M50’s 4K/24p video (it comes with a frustrating 1.7x crop).

So if you’re looking for a powerful camera that offers a lot of resolution, impressive speed, and a (likely) reasonable price tag, then keep an eye out for the official EOS M50 Mark II announcement over the next few months.

Nikon to Announce the 14-24mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.2 for Z Mount

Nikon hasn’t managed to capture much airtime over the past few months, what with the Canon EOS R5 and R6 launch as well as the Sony a7S III announcement.

But Nikon continues to produce top-notch kit, and we’ll see the fruits of the company’s labor later this week, with the official announcement for two new lenses:

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S.

And the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S.

Both lenses are designed for Nikon’s Z mount cameras, which means that they’ll be compatible with Nikon’s mirrorless bodies: the Nikon Z5, Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7, and Nikon Z50.

Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from these two lenses.

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S

This lens will be a Z mount remake of a popular F-mount (DSLR) lens, the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G.

And, if the original lens is anything to go by, the Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S will be an absolute powerhouse.

At the very least, the Z mount 14-24mm will give Nikon users an ultra-wide zoom with an f/2.8 maximum aperture, which will be appreciated by many photographers, including astrophotographers and other low-light shooters. At present, Z mount f/2.8 zooms are limited to the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8; while both of these are excellent lenses, they just don’t offer the perspective that you can get from a 14-24mm lens.

According to Nikon Rumors, the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 will work with front filters (which is always a concern with ultra-wide lenses), but will also take rear filters. The 14-24mm will be relatively compact, and will feature “smooth and silent autofocus.”

In other words:

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 will likely be a lens that does a lot of things well, from landscapes and astrophotography to those ultra-wide travel and event shots that draw the viewer straight into the scene.

The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S

Nikon already offers a Z mount 50mm lens: the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S.

But the new 50mm f/1.2 S will go beyond the 50mm f/1.8 S; that extra maximum aperture may not seem like much, but it’s critical for low-light shooters of all types, as well as anyone who’s after the best possible bokeh.

That’s why, if you’re a portrait photographer or an event photographer, the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S should be at the top of your wish-list.

While the 50mm f/1.2 S is likely to offer stellar image quality, such a wide maximum aperture comes with a serious price:

The lens is going to be big and hefty. This certainly won’t be your easy-to-carry nifty fifty, so if that’s what you’re after, look elsewhere. But it will be a high-quality, well-built, weather-sealed lens that many professionals are after.

Conclusion

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S and the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S lenses are bound to be impressive (even if they have a price tag to match!).

So if either lens seemed appealing, I recommend you keep an eye out for Nikon announcements over the next few days.

Sony to Announce New Line of Compact Cameras Next Week

Sony’s is famous for its full-frame mirrorless lineup, which offers stellar image quality, lightning-fast autofocus, and more.

Sony is also famous for its APS-C mirrorless lineup, which offers similarly fast autofocus but in a compact package.

Yet Sony is about to take their mirrorless system a step further.

Earlier this week, Sony unveiled this graphic on their Sony Japan website:

And while the announcement hasn’t officially been followed by additional details, Sony Alpha Rumors has reported that Sony will be announcing a brand-new type of mirrorless camera, one that combines the compactness of the Sony a6000 series with the image quality of the a7 and a9 series.

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the first of these cameras will be labeled the Sony a7C, where the ‘C’ will likely stand for either Concept or Compact.

So what can we expect from this new mirrorless body?

  • The a7 III’s 24 MP sensor
  • A fully-articulating screen in the style of the a7S III
  • Autofocus from the a7S III
  • A design close to that of the Sony a6600 (though a hair larger)
  • 4K/30p video recording capabilities
  • In-body image stabilization
  • One SD card slot
  • A headphone jack as well as a mic input
  • A higher price tag than the a7 III (which currently sits around $ 2000 USD)

Sony Alpha Rumors also reports that the a7C “will be marketed for vloggers and YouTubers,” and will debut alongside a new set of compact lenses.

If all this information is accurate (and I suspect that it is!), we’re going to be in for quite a treat. The a7C will offer some of Sony’s best goods, and future a7C cameras should be similarly impressive.

Really, this camera seems like a powerful hybrid; while it may be aimed at YouTubers and vloggers, it should also appeal to travel photographers, street photographers, and even more casual, walkaround photographers.

Plus, the new compact lens lineup will hopefully address a common frustration among Sony mirrorless photographers: that the cameras are compact, but the lenses aren’t.

So if you’re looking to grab a compact camera that can handle video and stills on the go, keep an eye out for the announcement!

Panasonic will announce, via livestream, its new Lumix S5 full-frame camera on September 2

Panasonic has announced it will hold an online launch event for its new full-frame mirrorless camera, the Lumix S5, on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at 10 AM EDT.

Aside from the date and time, no further information was shared about the camera or launch event. Panasonic suggests keeping an eye on its Lumix S5 webpage and Instagram account, but we will also update this article with a link to the event when it goes live.
