Golden Ratio in Action: Coloring Book & Animations of Geometric Illustrations

The Golden Ratio has been a source of inspiration (and contention) for thousands of years, lurking behind great works of design. Venezuelan architect and illustrator Rafael Araujo is fascinated with patterns of nature and their applications to built environments, but as his artwork shows, is particularly interested in the Golden Ratio as found in natural settings.

hand drawn

These painstakingly created drawings trace this ratio into reality, animating everything from fluttering bird wings to the formation of seashells. Some of these sophisticated works take days or even weeks to complete — fans can also get in on the action with his recently created coloring book.

This coloring book provides a version of his pieces as frameworks for others to complete. The artist got the idea after fans started asking for prints, seeing it as a way to bring them into the process rather than simply giving them a framed product.

Using pencils, rulers, compasses and protractors, he spends as much as 100 hours on a given illustration of these mathematical expressions. Leftover lines, like those found faded in architectural drawings, give extra depth to each piece while also highlighting the geometry that goes into it.

His work shows how the geometric formulas of the Golden Ratio can be found in spirals of plants as well as the delicate flights of butterflies, all through hand drawings of each phenomenon. And as fascinating as they are in their finished form, animated images and process videos of the works in progress are especially intriguing.

Part of the challenge in his representations is their three-dimensional nature — showing complex organic curves accurately in 3D is an incredibly difficult feat of science applied to art. At the same time, something would be lost if these creations were simply done using computer programs (h/t Colossal).

Twisted History: Archival Photos Augmented with Surreal Animations

30 Aug

[ By SA Rogers in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

archival gif main

Black-and-white images and footage from the past, plucked from public domain collections, become absurd animations as moving elements are transposed on top of them in this series of images by artist Bill Domonkos. UFOs spin around a a curly-haired woman captured on film in the early 20th century, a running skeleton struggles to keep up with the camera on a blurry set of train tracks and television sets hover in Victorian living rooms. A fancy hairstyle becomes a journey into a forest, human eyes project beams of light and armless statues get prosthetics.

The fact that the moving additions are so suitably tailored to the original images is what makes the results so magical, not to mention their 3D appearance. Simultaneously funny and dark, the animations – which he presents in both GIF and video form – are each strange and unlikely in their own particular way, yet somehow still believable. Maybe that’s not too surprising, coming from a man who shot his own version of Valley of the Dolls as a child with a Super 8 camera.

“I view my work as a collision and recombination of ideas,” says Domonkos. “My process unfolds gradually and spontaneously – using found materials such as archive film footage, photographs, and the internet. I experiment by combining, altering, editing and reassembling using digital technology, special effects and animation to create a new kind of experience. I am interested in the poetics of time and space – to renew and transform materials, experiences and ideas. The extraordinary thing about cinema is its ability to suggest the ineffable – it is this elusive, dreamlike quality that informs my work.”

The filmmaker and computer animator is also the creator of an app called Stereopsis, collection of 40 3D stereo images and GIF animations that combine altered archive stereographs and 3D computer graphics. You can get a contraption called ‘Google Cardboard’ to enhance the effect. See more on his website and tumblr.

Animator Marty Cooper draws on the individual cels, holding them up for capture, but also displaces objects with which his creations seem to interact.

These creations, in turn, are brought to life to bounce on top of train cars, splash in pothole puddles oremerge from alleyway dumpsters to interact with their surroundings in clever ways.

Flash Tutorial: Growing Vines Flourish Animations Tutorial

09 Apr

In this tutorial we will use Flash to create the oh-so popular growing vines animation look. We will do it in two different ways; first, we will do a quick masked shape and shape tween under the mask after that we will do it the “right” way and build a frame-by-frame animation that makes this little flourish look like it is really growing. If you want to learn how to animate this effect, this is the tutorial for you. Enjoy! Follow me on Twitter! www.twitter.com Be sure to check out www.tutvid.com Check out the blog @ http

The sacroiliac joint dysfunction is a source of low back pain. Due to the proximity of the sacroiliac joint to the hip and the spine, pain of SI joint origin may be attributed to a hip or spine condition rather than the sacroiliac joint itself. SI joint pain is an unappreciated problem causing low back pain . Clinical and radiological evaluation is not usually reliable. The only reliable method for diagnosing SI joint pain is by injection.

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Animations or Video Displaying Poorly?

09 Oct

An old graphics card or poorly-implemented driver may be causing display problems for your PowerPoint 2010 presentations. Learn how to switch to software-based rendering for increased compatibility.

In some situations, a complex Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 presentation with videos, transitions, and animations may display poorly on a computer with an older or non-standard video card. This may be due to the fact that PowerPoint is trying to use the graphics card’s hardware-based acceleration features, but these are not implemented correctly.

If updating your video card’s drivers (if applicable) does not solve video and animation problems, you may wish to turn hardware acceleration off in PowerPoint. Note that doing so may slow down videos or animations, especially if you have other processes running….

3D Animations: Pink Floyd – “Terminal Frost”

20 May

The generalized Mandelbrot set with some of it’s various filled Julia sets. We can see the infinite divergence layers for each of them. “Those who dwell, as scientists or laymen, among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life.”–Rachael Carson Music, Pink Floyd, Momentary Lapse of Reason “Terminal Frost” is an instrumental from Pink Floyd’s 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. As with both parts of “A New Machine”, a live version was never officially released by the band. Because of Nick Mason’s lack of drumming while Pink Floyd had been on hiatus, the track uses a drum machine. The saxophones are played by Tom Scott and John Helliwell, the latter best known for being the saxophonist for the band Supertramp. Thanks to: www.3dfractals.com
