CHASING DORY is a portable, affordable underwater drone with 1080p video

If there’s one omnipresent trend in the drone industry, it’s this: manufacturers are thinking smaller. Companies are aiming to make unmanned aerial vehicles more compact while inserting as many premium features, found in their larger counterparts, as possible. The CHASING DORY underwater drone, which is currently in the midst of a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, is no exception.

Presumably named after the daffy but lovable fish from the movie Finding Nemo, at 18.8cm (7.4in) wide, the drone is smaller than a standard sheet of paper. It is the follow up to Shenzhen-based company CHASING’s GLADIUS MINI drone whose 2017 Indiegogo campaign ended with 1629% funding and a 100% delivery rate to backers. DORY is 56% lighter and 65% smaller than its predecessor which weighed 2.5kg (5.5 pounds).

An algorithm ensures photos remain vivid in all conditions.

DORY’s camera has an F1.6 lens with 1/2.9″ CMOS sensor capable of recording at 1080p, a 100° field of view, and a ±45° Tilt-Lock mode that allows you to scan the floor of a body of water or view its surface above. Two 250-lumen lights placed on the front of drone illuminate the area where its operating without overwhelming underwater inhabitants. CHASING’s color-restore algorithm keeps photos vivid in all conditions. 8 GB of internal memory means you don’t have to worry about losing any footage.

The lowest possible pledge available on Kickstarter will get you a DORY underwater drone, Wi-Fi buoy, tether, and charger. The Wi-Fi buoy helps your mobile device stay connected up to 15 meters (49 feet) away with the wired tether. An Anti-lost Warning is there to prevent any chance of getting disconnected. Depth Lock helps the drone remain stable so it doesn’t get tossed around. The charger takes two hours to power a 4800 mAh battery which will give you one hour of operating time. Unlike other underwater drones that require multiple components to be charged, only the drone needs it with the DORY.

DORY doesn’t come with a remote. Instead, a smartphone is all that is needed, along with the CHASING DORY app (available for iOS and Android), to control the drone. You can customize imagery with 19 different filters, share footage on social networks including Facebook and Instagram, and even stream live. The app also features Co-Play which enables one person to maneuver the drone while the other controls the camera.

As of this writing, there are 17 days left to back DORY on Kickstarter. The campaign has already raised over $ 120,000 of its initial $ 30,000 goal. If underwater exploration is your interest, this portable, affordable drone is an option worth considering.

Motorola One Action comes with ultra-wide action cam and affordable price tag

Ultra-wide cameras are a wide-spread feature among the current crop of Android phones but Motorola’s new One Action is taking a slightly different approach to most of its competitors. The brand new device’s ultra-wide camera has been designed to work predominantly as a GoPro-style action camera.

The 16MP camera has a field-of-view of 117 degrees (approximately 13mm equivalent focal length) and is installed vertically which means you can also hold the phone vertically while recording horizontal video for better control. Footage is recorded at 1080p resolution and electronic image stabilization should smooth out even bumpy sports action,

The main camera features a 12MP sensor with 1.25µm pixel size and F1.8 aperture. A PDAF system is used for focusing and in video mode 4K clips can be recorded at 30 frames per second. The triple-camera setup is completed by a 5MP depth camera for the simulated bokeh effect.

Other specs fall firmly into the mid-range category. The Android OS is powered by a Samsung Exynos 9609 processor and 4GB of RAM. 128GB of storage are quite generous for a device in this class and the battery offers a 3,500 mAh capacity. Images and videos can be viewed on a 6.3-inch FHD+ 21:9 display with a hole-punch design for the front camera.

The Motorola One Action will be available starting today in Brazil, Mexico, and some countries in the Euro zone for €259 ($ 287). Motorola says the device will be available in more regions across Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific, and will arrive in the US and Canada in October as an unlocked version.

Review: Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 lens for Canon – At just US$50 could this be the most affordable “nifty fifty”?

The 50mm f/1.8 lens, or as we call it, the ‘Nifty Fifty,’ is one of the most widely used lenses in the market. This is usually the first lens a modern digital camera owner desires to purchase after the kit lenses.

The reasons why this is the most popular lens are fairly simple – the first being affordability, and the second, the ability to produce pleasing bokeh.

In terms of affordability, the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 lens is ideally the cheapest Nifty Fifty. Priced at less than US$ 50, this is less than half of the Canon variant and works on APS-C as well as full-frame cameras.

However, the Yongnuo lens for Nikon costs around US$ 70 as it includes the focus motor. I recently bought one for my Canon 5D Mark iii, so I thought of sharing my views about this lens.

Build quality and ergonomics

The Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 lens looks exactly like the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens (discontinued version). The plastic used in the Yongnuo lens feels a bit cheaper though. Surprisingly, the rubber grip is smooth, and the ‘AF and MF’ switch is similar to Canon.

The construction of the lens consists of 6 elements in 5 groups and has 7 diaphragm blades – the same as the Canon variant. This Yongnuo lens is light to carry as it weighs only 120g – 40g lighter than its competitor. Overall the lens looks and feels good at this price point.

Focus speed and accuracy

I have been using this for almost a month now, during the day as well as night time. The focus speed is a bit slow as the lens hunts for focus, especially in low light conditions. If you are shooting stationary subjects, then it is fine, but if you want to nail the focus swiftly, then you might be disappointed.

Though the focus speed is not that fast, the accuracy is fairly good. It takes time to focus but when it does the focus is accurate. I would not recommend this lens for video shooters as it messes a lot with the focus. However, if you are a hobbyist and casually shoot portraits or still objects, this lens can do the job.

Sharpness and Image Quality

Before clicking photos using the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8, I had much less expectation from this lens. To my surprise, this lens produced amazing sharpness and image quality. I did not compare it side by side with its competitor lens, but I am sure it is on par with it.

The few image samples that you see are all shot at an event during the sunset/evening time. The images are tad sharp, and the colors also look natural. I had done a test on vignetting performance, and at f/4 it was almost gone. This lens worked for me when I was shooting stationary subjects as well as when shooting performing artists at an event.

For me, the bokeh shape was a bit unpleasant at f/1.8, and I’m not sure exactly why. I used this lens at f/2.8 and achieved sharp and crisp images with minimum vignetting and shallow depth of field effect.

Conclusion

This lens by Yongnuo is for someone who has just started with photography or has a tight budget but still wants to achieve the f/1.8 look at 50mm. The focus speed is something that might irritate you, but once it focuses the image quality is quite impressive. I would suggest this lens to someone who shoots still subjects or portraits without much movement. If you are a wedding, event or a professional portrait photographer, you might be disappointed.

How to Make Easy and Affordable DIY Food Photography Backdrops

In this helpful video by Joanie Simon of The Bite Shot, she explains how to do DIY Food Photography Backdrops that are both affordable and easy. Costing you less than US$ 30 per backdrop!

Before beginning, please be sure to use your spray paints outdoors and always paint in a well-ventilated area.

Things you will need:

  1. Laminated plywood
  2. Paint scraper/palette knife
  3. Joint Compound (used for drywalling)
  4. Oil-based spray paint
  5. Chalky finish acrylic paint
  6. Acrylic or oil-based metallic spray paint.

When you pick out your paint, ensure that you choose paint that has a matte finish to stop glare and reflection.

Stick to colors that are subtle so that your food is the star. For example, browns, topes, cool greys, mossy green, and robins blue.

Step 1:

Use the scraper/palette knife to apply the Joint Compound to the board. Allow it to be organic and textural. Explore cross-hatching and mixed textures for different boards.

Let it sit for a few minutes and drag the palette knife across the applied compound to flatten it a bit while still leaving interesting grooves and patterns.

Let it dry overnight (24hrs).

Step 2:

Apply your darker peak-through color first (oil based spray paint). There is no need to apply full coverage as the other colors will be overlayed.

Step 3:

Next, brush on your chalky finish paint. You can use a short blending brush. Brush, stipple, use circular motions to blend over the previous color so that the peak through color still shows through.

If you put too much on, you can use a damp cloth to wipe the acrylic paint back off.

Step 4:

Take your colored spray paint and just spray sections from a distance to give light coverage for extra tone and texture.

Step 5:

Spray a little water onto your board and spray your oil-based metallic paint over it. The paint won’t adhere to the areas of water. Wait ten minutes for the paint to dry and once it is dry, wipe the water off. You are let with a really cool effect.

Step 6:

Take your other boards and play around with these techniques using your different tones and textures.

Step 7:

Apply a matte finish spray to your boards to protect the surface. 2-3 coats will do the trick.

3 Legged Thing launches the affordable Patti tripod

British manufacturer 3 Legged Thing today launched a new affordable today. Despite an entry-level price point of $ 120, the company says its new Patti offers the same quality and versatility as the more expensive models in its Punks range.

A maximum payload of 10kg (22lbs) should be more than enough for most smaller DSLRs and mirrorless setups, and its ABS plastic flip leg locks instead of the more expensive models’ twist lock systems help keep the price down. The legs are made from aircraft grade magnesium.

The Patti features a removable and reversible single section center column, allowing for low angled shots and a minimum shooting height of 11cm (4.3″). Packed down the new model measures 45cm (17.7″) and extends to a maximum height of 1.63m (64″) when unfolded and set up.

The tripod is supplied with the company’s AirHead Mini head, a simplified version of its AirHead ball head variant. The latter comes with controls for the Arca Swiss style release plate as well as the ball head and panoramic rotation.

Tamron introduces affordable 17-35mm F2.8-4 full-frame lens for Canon and Nikon

Tamron has introduced its 17-35mm F2.8-4 Di OSD lens for full-frame Canon and Nikon bodies. This compact lens, which weighs just 460g (16.2oz), features 15 elements, including low-dispersion and glass-molded aspherical elements. Both ‘BBAR’ and fluorine coatings are employed, with the latter helping to fingerprints and moisture from adhering to this weather-sealed lens. The Optimized Silent Drive motor promises ‘excellent AF speed and drive noise reduction,’ according to Tamron.

The 17-35mm F2.8-4 Di OSD will be available in early September for Nikon FX bodies, with a Canon EF model to follow later. It will be priced at a very reasonable $ 599.

1. High-performance imaging for shooting vast landscapes in sharp detail
The optical construction (15 elements in 10 groups) uses four LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements to minimize axial chromatic aberrations that can occur with ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses. With two properly positioned GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lenses, distortion and other aberration can be satisfactorily corrected as well. Being the smallest and lightest in its class and dedicated to high quality imaging, the engineers have paid particular attention to size. The lens has also been carefully designed to allow peripheral point image reproducibility and thereby facilitate a high degree of sharpness and contrast. The Minimum Object Distance (MOD) for the entire zoom range is a short 11 in., so background blurring is still possible when opening the aperture and approaching the subject close-up with this ultra-wide-angle zoom.

2. Advanced coating technology along with proprietary ghosting analysis simulation technology enabled the high level of backlighting control
Resistance to backlighting is extremely important for wide-angle lenses as they are often subjected to strong light sources. The Model A037 has a high level optical construction that repeatedly employs comprehensive ghosting analysis simulation. The BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating is highly effective in reducing reflection, allowing ghosting and flare throughout the entire zoom range to be controlled.

3. OSD (Optimized Silent Drive) enables both excellent AF speed and drive noise reduction
The AF drive system employs an OSD (Optimized Silent Drive) to ensure quiet operation. Through the innovative optimization of the system that includes AF system speed reduction gear, Tamron could greatly reduce the drive noise in comparison to conventional AF types with built-in DC motors. AF performance and speed have also been vastly improved. Thus, even if silence is required, AF can be employed without having to worry at all about noise creation. The Model A037 can provide superlative AF precision for exact focus even when shooting moving objects, as well as outstanding trackability.

4. Circular aperture to produce a smooth-edged bokeh
A 7-blade diaphragm is configured to retain a smooth, circular-shaped aperture opening even when stopped down by two stops from the wide-open aperture. This produces a smooth-edged bokeh in background light spots and avoids rugged aperture geometry.

5. Moisture-Resistant Construction
Seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops to provide Moisture-Resistant Construction. This feature affords an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

6. Fluorine Coating
The surface of the front element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The front surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance. The coating also provides an enhanced level of durability, and will sustain its effectiveness for years.

7. Compatible with TAMRON TAP-in ConsoleTM, an optional accessory
The new A037 is compatible with the optional TAMRON TAP-in Console, an optional accessory product that provides a USB connection to a personal computer, enabling users to easily update a lens’s firmware as well as customize features including fine adjustments to the AF.

Xiaomi launches affordable Mijia smartphone gimbal

Modern high-end smartphones can shoot impressively smooth and stable video at 4K resolution, thanks to intelligent combinations of electronic (EIS) and optical (OIS) image stabilization. However, for a real steady-cam effect, you’ll need a gimbal.

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has launched an affordable smartphone gimbal option under its Mijia sub-brand which already offers a gimbal designed for action cameras. The new model can accommodate phones with a width of up to 86mm and a weight of up to 200 grams which easily covers even larger devices such as the Huawei P20 Pro or Google Pixel 2 XL.

The Mijia provides 3-axis stabilization and comes with a dedicated app offering 360-degree auto-tracking and a function for creating time-lapses

The gimbal is capable of supplying power to the phone via its built-in 5000 mAh battery, allowing for extended shooting sessions. If not used for charging the phone, the battery should last up to 16 hours. The gimbal itself weighs 476 grams and comes with a standard tripod-mount at the bottom.

The Mijia provides 3-axis stabilization and comes with a dedicated app offering 360-degree auto-tracking and a function for creating time-lapses. The new Mijia gimbal will be available in China from June 16 and set you back CNY 600 (approximately $ 95). There is no word yet on international availability.

The Chroma is a lightweight, affordable, easy-to-use 5×4 field camera

A UK photographer and custom-built camera maker has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a new 5×4-inch field camera that he intends to be lightweight, easy-to-use, unique, affordable and upgradable… as well as a bit funky. To that end, the Chroma will be made from brightly colored sheets of acrylic, laser-cut for accuracy.

Steve Lloyd has spent fifteen years creating custom cameras as one-offs, but decided to make a production 5×4 camera using modern materials and technologies.

The 3mm and 5mm acrylic sheets he uses allow cameras to be made in a range of colors—including Red, Pink, Blue, White, Green, Matte Black, Glossy Black, Purple and Yellow—while the lightweight nature of the material means the Chroma will weigh much less than a traditional wooden model. Even with the ground glass screen, the camera weighs just 1592g.

Here’s a quick intro to the colorful Chroma camera:

Lloyd has designed Chroma to provide a good range of movements in both the front and rear standards, with 40mm of rise and fall when both standards are in operation, and 30mm of shift in either direction at the front. Both standards allow 45° of tilt forwards and backwards, and Lloyd claims swing is limited only by the coverage of the lens in use and the ability of the bellows to flex.

The camera uses a clever back that is fixed with magnets built into the body, so it can be lifted off and rotated in seconds. The back is designed for standard 5×4 double dark slides, and Lloyd says he is working on designs for roll film and Graflok backs, as well as one for wet plate holders.

When fully extended the Chroma can stretch its bellows to 300mm, and it can be used with focal lengths from 65mm to 280mm. In the extended pose the camera measures 180x330x235mm, but it folds away to just 210x180x117mm.

The camera comes with a ground glass screen and a pin-hole lens to get new 5×4 photographers started. Users can choose Copal 0, 1 or 3 sized holes in a Linhof/Wista-style lens board, and those with existing Linhof/Wista boards will be able to fit them.

The Chroma starts at £250 (approx $ 350) for Kickstarter backers, and Lloyd says he expects to deliver between June and November 2018 according to the pledge you choose. Of course, no crowdfunding campaign is a guarantee, but given he’s already raised over $ 40K on a $ 13K goal, Lloyd is well on his way to a successful delivery.

Fujifilm’s MKX lenses bring affordable cinema glass to X-mount

Fujifilm has announced its Fujinon MKX 18-55mm T2.9 and MKX 50-135mm T2.9 cinema lenses for X-mount. These are essentially the same Super 35 lenses that Fujifilm released about a year ago in E-mount and are now available to users of the company’s own X-mount mirrorless system.

Combined, the two lenses provide coverage between 18mm and 135mm, a very useful range for video production. Based on the company’s much more expensive Cabrio line of cinema optics, the MKX series include properties typically found on much more expensive cine lenses.

Those features include little to no lens breathing, a phenomenon which causes a lens’s field of view to change slightly as it’s focused, a parfocal design, meaning that the lens will maintain precise focus while zooming and 200 degrees of focus rotation with hard stops in order to work well with a follow focus setup.

The Fujinon MKX18-55mm T2.9 and MKX 50-135mm T2.9 cinema lenses are X-mount versions of the MK series lenses released about a year ago for E-mount (shown here on a Sony FS7 camera).

Additionally, the MKX lenses are also matched to have the same exact weight, dimensions, gearing and 82mm filter threads, meaning that it’s possible to switch between the two lenses easily without making any modifications to your rigging, such as the position of tools like a follow-focus or matte box.

We provided a hands-on look at both the MK18-55mm T2.9 and MK50-135mm T2.9 lenses in E-mount when they were released, and since they’re the same lenses (except for the mount) those articles can give you a more detailed overview of both lenses.

The MKX 18-55mm T2.9 and lens will cost $ 3,999, while the MKX 50-135mm T2.9 will cost $ 4,299. Both lenses are expected to be available in spring or summer 2018.

The MKX18-55mm and MKX50-135mm are lightweight and compact; achieving advanced optical performance utilizing the short flange focal distance of X Mount. This feature reduces the number of people needed for the shooting process, ideal for small budget productions.

In addition, the lenses offer advanced optical performance across the entire zoom range. Achieving T2.9 aperture, they facilitate the bokeh effect with shallow depth-of-field eliminating the need to readjust lighting. Combined, these features not only lead to beautiful videos, but also shorten shooting time, making the MKX lenses a very economical choice for movie production. Further adding to its superior output, contact with an X Series camera corrects distortion, color, brightness and achieves Fujifilm’s various Film Simulation modes.

Featuring an Optical and Mechanical Design Ideal for Video Shooting

The optical and mechanical approach employed in these new MKX lenses allows for elimination of time lag that is usually experienced with electrical control systems. Manufacturing technology developed for conventional FUJINON cinema lenses was applied to control the optical axis shift while zooming. The front inner-focusing system controls lens breathing, allowing for smooth focus over an entire scene. Additionally, when zooming, focus shift is suppressed by independently driving the front focusing group and zooming group of lens elements away from each other.

Comfortable Operability Provided Through Dedicated Cinema Lenses

The MKX18-55mm and MKX50-135mm feature three fully manual rings for independent adjustment of focus, zoom and aperture, allowing for intuitive operation. The focus ring offers a rotation of a full 200 degrees to facilitate precise focusing even when shooting with a shallow depth-of-field where a high degree of precision is required. Further, all operation rings have a gear pitch of 0.8 m, allowing the use of all standard third party accessories for video production. With an iris that supports seamless adjustment, precise and silent exposure is achieved while preventing camera shake caused by clicking, making these lenses perfect for a wide array of shooting situations.

Standardized Design for Ease of Operation

Adding to their high quality video production, these MKX lenses are designed for ease-of-use. The gears for all three rings are positioned in the same place eliminating the need to re-position accessories when switching lenses. Only one matte box with an 85mm front diameter and one filter size with a filter thread of 82mm are needed between the two lenses. Equipped with a macro function that allows shooting close-ups to broaden the range of scenes that can be covered with one lens, optimum performance is achieved.
