Select Sony stores in Japan are giving away adorable mini camera kits with the purchase of a real kit

If you’re lucky enough to be in Japan at the moment, select Sony stores will give you a free — and downright adorable — mini camera kit if you purchase a Sony a7 or a9 series camera system.

The limited-time promotion is going on through November 30 at the Sony Stores in the Ginza, Sapporo, Osaka and Fukuoka Tenjin districts. The mini kit includes miniature versions of the Sony a7R II and either a 24–70mm F2.8 OSS or 100–400mm GM OSS lens.

The promotion appears to be limited to these stores, so unless you happen to be in Japan amidst this global pandemic or know someone who is (that’s also willing to buy an a7 or a9 camera for you), you might just have to keep an eye out on auction sites when people inevitably end up trying to sell these miniature mirrorless cameras and lenses online.

Japan’s space agency has an adorable ball-shaped camera drone on the ISS

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has a robotic ball-shaped camera drone called Int-Ball floating around the International Space Station, and for the first time ever it has released videos and images captured by the camera.

The drone, which measures 15cm in diameter and was delivered to the ISS on June 4th, was created using 3D printing technologies; with it, flight controllers and researchers on Earth can watch video from the ISS in real-time.

JAXA hasn’t detailed the type of camera used with Int-Ball, saying only that the robot features ‘existing drone technology.’ According to a report in The Japan Times, a dozen propellers enable Int-Ball to navigate in any direction while a variety of inertial sensors, ultrasonics sensors, and a camera make navigation possible.

JAXA says Int-Ball frees up about 10% of the ISS crew’s time for other tasks… so there is some use for it beyond adorable ISS drone marketing.

5 Adorable Pet Photos [and How to Make your Shots even Cuter]

Want to get photos of your pet that will make everyone say “aaawwww”? Here are five of my top tips for capturing cuteness.

1. Get down on their level

One of the easiest and most often overlooked techniques is to be on the same level as your pet! By being at eye level with them, you will create a connection which translates into a more intimate, engaging photo.

2. Use Props

Does your pet have a favourite basket, bed, or toy? If so, incorporate these into your photos. Make sure whatever prop you are using is one that your pet is happy and comfortable around, and don’t force any behaviour that makes them stressed or wary – this will show through in the photos

3. Engage in Play

A lot of pets have a sixth sense for when a camera is being pulled out, and will immediately turn their back or engage in a vigorous grooming session to avoid it. By engaging them with a fun toy, you will distract them from the camera as well as capturing some great natural expressions.

4. Get up Close and Personal

Want to create a more interesting shot of your pet? Focus in on the little things that make them so cute – whether it be their big puppy dog eyes, their magnificent whiskers, or their tiny little paws.

5. Let them be Themselves – and be Patient!

Your best shots will always come when you observe and capture their behaviour, rather than forcing them into unnatural poses. It may take ten minutes or an hour to get that perfect shot, so be patient and calm – pets pick up on your mood!
