Zhiyun-Tech adds zoom, smartphone control on its new Crane 3 Lab gimbal

19 Nov

Gimbal manufacturer Zhiyun-Tech has introduced zoom control as well as focus control for its new flagship model, the Crane 3 Lab. The new model, which is now ready to ship this month, will allow also feature a transmission system that will send full HD footage from the camera to a smartphone or tablet for more convenient monitoring of the footage as it is recorded.

The company has redesigned the grip of the gimbal with a second handle that extends from the rear of the device that makes working in the underslung position, and the process of getting there from the ‘normal’ upright position, much smoother. The second handle has an updated control panel for accessing menus as well as for controlling the gimbal and some of the features of the camera in use. The panel has an improved LED screen and the grip more buttons and physical control points so users don’t need to access the menu so often.

A bracket has been added to the main stem of the gimbal that is designed to hold a smartphone that can be used to help control the gimbal. With the camera connected via HDMI to the new built-in transmission box an HD preview of the footage being recorded by the camera is sent directly to a wirelessly connected smartphone.

Using the Zhiyun app on either Android or iOS devices the picture can be monitored and the gimbal itself can be controlled. The phone can be used as a motion control sensor so the gimbal will mirror the movements of the phone, or simple on-screen icons can drive gimbal rolls, tilts and turns. The focus and zoom of the lens attached to the camera can also be controlled via the app or by using a pair of wheels on the body of the gimbal.

Below is a demonstration of the Crane 3 Lab in action, captured and shared by Cinema5D:

Zhiyun says that it has made the arms of the gimbal a bit longer to allow it to accommodate large cameras, and the maximum weight it can shoulder has risen to 4.5kg/9.9lbs (minimum weight is 500g/1lb). New motors have double the torque of those in the Crane 2, and perform with half the noise and will much improved speed of response. The 2600mAh battery runs for 7.5hours and charges in 4, and has been repositioned from inside the main grip.

The Zhiyun Crane 3 Lab is due out later this month, and will cost $ 899. For more information see the Zhiyun-Tech website

Zhiyun Announces 2018’s Best DSLR Camera Stabilizer, CRANE 3 LAB

4.5kg payload, wireless image transmission, remote control, and synchronous zoom/focus

Shenzhen, China, November 14th, 2018, Zhiyun, the world’s leading gimbal manufacturer, is pleased to announce the all-new CRANE 3 LAB gimbal for professional DSLR and cinema-grade cameras. The CRANE 3 LAB is the most anticipated stabilizer of 2018 and revolutionizes the way stabilizers will be designed as it features a unique L-shaped design. Defining new features that make the CRANE 3 LAB stand out in the gimbal market are its wireless image transmission system and ViaTouch Control System to allow anyone to shoot the best footage with the CRANE 3 LAB, whether working alone or as a team.

The CRANE 3 LAB sports a protruded control stick which provides stability and comfort. It creates a natural and ergonomic way to hold your stabilizer in a traditional vertical manner, or underslung for low-angle shots. The handheld tripod at the base is used as an extra grip and can easily be removed for high-activity shots with the least amount of interference.

In underslung mode, the CRANE 3 LAB is perfectly balanced for one-handed use, a testament to its build quality and high-quality materials. Despite its low weight and light feel, the CRANE 3 LAB supports camera setups up to 4.5 kg / 10 lbs.

CRANE 3 LAB – The perfectly controllable stabilizer
The CRANE 3 LAB features an advanced control stick with a bright OLED display that shows vital information about the camera and the CRANE 3 LAB itself, such as shutter speed, ISO setting, aperture, as well as battery and connection status. It also features the most common settings buttons, a quick-select control dial, and gimbal joystick, all within a finger’s reach, making switching settings on-the-go a breeze. The hands-on control method works no matter at what angle the CRANE 3 LAB is used. Popular features from other Zhiyun products are also introduced, such as an easy Pan-Follow/Lock switch and the popular PhoneGo mode, which turns the motors into overdrive to film high-performance sports and action scenes.

Advanced wireless operation
As a part of Zhiyun’s premium LAB features, the CRANE 3 LAB is equipped with a wireless image transmission system that allows smartphones and tablets to function as a Full HD monitor, reducing the need for an external monitor. Beyond use as just an external monitor, the ViaTouch Control System allows for remote operation of the CRANE 3 LAB through any Android or iOS device running the ZY Play app. Controlling the CRANE 3 LAB can be done through a touch-interface or through motion-control. This allows for perfect framing of shots, even when the operator is not near the gimbal. Using ViaTouch allows for advanced features like follow focusing and object-tracking through a connected device, to allow a new level of footage to be shot with the CRANE 3 LAB.

Synchronous Zoom/Focus
The CRANE 3 LAB supports synchronous zoom and focus on almost all cameras with the TransMount Servo Zoom/Follow Controller Max & TransMount Servo Zoom/Follow Controller Lite. With the zoom trigger and the focus wheel, filmmakers have instant control of the zoom and focus which gives an instantaneous response of the actions performed by the filmmaker. This is a huge benefit over last-generation products that can only realize either one of zoom or focus function at a time. The TransMount Servo Controllers are available separately or through the Creator & Master Package.

CRANE 3 LAB bundles with TransMount accessories
The Creator and Master Package of the CRANE 3 LAB come with all the TransMount accessories to level-up your shooting experience. Included in the Creator Package are the TransMount phone holder with crown gear, servo focus & zoom combo kits, telescopic monopod (1.2m/4ft) with locking buckle, camera belt, quick release base plate, and quick setup kit, which adds quick-release options for the monopod or tripod. The Master Package adds a protective and durable gimbal backpack to the package.

Rethinking the DSLR camera stabilizer
The CRANE 3 LAB was developed based on the feedback of many users of Zhiyun CRANE products. For easier setup and maximum portability, each axis/motor has a locking-tab in bright red sturdy aluminum, to lock each axis in place for balance or during transportation. Additionally, each axis is longer and together with the stronger, aviation-grade engines, allowing it to operate with almost all best-selling DSLR cameras and lenses on the market. Power is provided by universally available 18650 batteries that can be easily swapped or charged through a USB port, for up to a promised 7,5 hours of runtime.

Pricing and availability
The CRANE 3 LAB will be available for preorder at major photo retailers including B&H for $ 899:

Epson adds textured paper to Legacy photo inkjet lineup

27 Oct

A new textured paper has been introduced to the Epson Legacy range of premium inkjet media that the company claims allows dense blacks, vibrant colors and ‘outstanding’ print permanence. Epson Legacy Textured Paper promises to ‘simulate old-world handcrafted watercolor papers’ with a heavily textured surface, according to Epson, and is aimed at photographers who exhibit and sell their work as art pieces.

No optical brighteners have been used in the paper, and Epson says that it will have excellent lightfast properties. Permanence figures are not quoted, as the paper is still being evaluated by Wilhelm Imaging Research.

The matte finish paper is 100% cotton, using randomly layered fibres to prevent curling in sheets as well as in long rolls, and will weigh 310 GSM. The paper is due to ship in December this year. For more information see the Epson website.

Epson Launches New Legacy Textured Paper

New Paper Provides Textured Surface and Matte Finish in Epson’s Distinguished Legacy Paper Line

Epson today introduced Legacy Textured, the latest addition to its sophisticated Legacy Paper line, offering the ultimate in quality and longevity for artists selling their work. Legacy Textured is comprised of a mould-made paper base that lays cotton fibers down randomly to virtually eliminate curl, and a heavily textured surface that simulates old-world handcrafted watercolor papers. In addition, Epson today announced that its popular Metallic Photo Paper in Luster and Glossy are now Signature Worthy® papers, moving into Epson’s line of paper designed for photography, art illustration and fine art prints. Both the Legacy Textured and the Metallic Photo Papers will be on display at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City from Oct. 25-27, 2018 at Epson’s booth, #707.

“A heavy, textured paper is what helps my images blur the line between photography and painting,” said Brooke Shaden, fine art photographer, author and motivational speaker. “Though my work is all photographic, having a painterly style has always been important to my aesthetic, and Legacy Textured provides that feeling of mixed media.”

Legacy Textured offers a heavily textured surface with a matte finish and is 100 percent cotton on a mould-made base. The 310 GSM textured paper is free of OBAs (optical brightening agents), delivers a high Dmax for deep blacks, an expanded color gamut volume, and accepts a high ink load. The cotton fibers are laid randomly to dramatically minimize curl in large rolls.

“Realizing the need for a heavily textured fine art paper, we collaborated with industry-leading photographers and artists to help develop a media that blends qualities of old-world handcrafted paper with the latest digital imaging enhancements,” said Jeff Smith, product manager, Professional Imaging, Epson America, Inc. “Designed to produce rich blacks and vibrant colors, Legacy Textured exhibits unparalleled qualities for artists looking to create and sell exhibition quality prints without compromising print quality.”

The Epson Legacy Textured paper is currently undergoing comprehensive eight-factor print permanence testing at Wilhelm Imaging Research (WIR), the world’s leading independent permanence testing laboratory. Testing includes color and black and white prints made with the current generation of improved-stability Epson UltraChrome® HD, Epson UltraChrome HDX, and Epson UltraChrome PRO pigment inks featured on Epson’s SureColor® P-Series printers. WIR is also testing Legacy Textured paper with high CRI (Color Rendering Index) museum-quality LED illumination. While final results are not yet available – the greater the lightfastness, the longer the test times – Epson is confident the new paper will exhibit outstanding print permanence.

Epson Professional Paper Line
Epson offers a complete line of professional papers to meet varying photography and fine art needs, no matter the finish or price point:

Standard Photo Paper: Available in multiple finishes, including glossy, semigloss, matte, semimatte, and velvet, Epson’s standard photo papers offer a solution for any photographer. Ricoh WG-60 rugged camera adds FlashAir card compatibility

25 Oct

The Ricoh WG-60 is a waterproof camera with solid rugged credentials. It’s waterproof to 14m (45ft), shockproof from 1.8m (11ft) and freezeproof to -10°C (14°F). It has a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 28-140mm equivalent lens, 2.7″ LCD and a built-in LED ring light.

The WG-60 is the replacement to the WG-50 and, from what we can tell, is nearly identical. The only difference appears to be support for FlashAir Wi-Fi SD cards, which is the camera’s only way to connect to mobile devices. If we discover other differences between the WG-60 and its predecessor, we’ll update this article.

The WG-60 will be available next month for £250 and will come in red or black. The camera will not be sold in the U.S.

Press Release:

Digital compact camera for underwater photography down to 14 metres, with waterproof, shockproof performance; available in two colours

London, 24 October 2018 ?RICOH IMAGING EUROPE S.A.S. is pleased to announce the launch of the RICOH WG-60 digital camera. This new model features a compact, lightweight body design, with exceptional waterproof and shockproof performance.

The superb waterproof design of the WG-60 means the user can easily take pictures outdoors with confidence. Despite a compact lightweight body, the outstanding specifications of the WG-60 means that it outperforms ordinary digital cameras and smartphones in demanding outdoor conditions. It is waterproof to a depth of 14 metres, shockproof against a fall from a height of 1.6 metres and freeze-proof down to temperatures as low as -10°C. It also comes equipped with an outdoor-friendly LCD monitor so you can instantly adjust its brightness to the lighting level in a particular shooting situation.

Main Features

1. Heavy-duty construction for underwater shooting down to 14 metres, for up to two hours.
Featuring a solid, airtight body waterproof down to a depth of 14 metres for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX 8 or JIS Class 8). Shockproof against falls from a height of 1.6 metres,* dustproof (equivalent to IPX 6 or JIS Class 6), freeze-proof to temperatures as low as -10°C, and crush-proof against weights up to 100kgf (kilogram force). ** Its heavy-duty construction ensures that the WG-60 performs superbly and dependably even in harsh, demanding outdoor conditions.
* Measured under RICOH IMAGING-original testing standards — from a height of 1.6 metres, onto a surface of 5cm-thick plywood — conforming to Method 516.5-Shock of the MIL-Standard 810F.
** Measured under RICOH IMAGING-original testing standards.

2. Exceptional image quality
The WG-60 comes equipped with a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which delivers excellent high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics and high-speed read-out of image data signals. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine, this image sensor delivers a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with approximately 16.0 effective megapixels. This model also provides advanced image processing functions, made possible by the latest super-resolution technology for sharp, clear, high-resolution images. It also offers such innovative features as Handheld Night Snap mode, which automatically captures several images of the same nighttime scene to produce a single, blur-free composite image.

3. 5X optical zoom lens with a 28mm wide-angle coverage
The WG-60 features a high-performance, five-times optical zoom lens with a focal-length coverage from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent to approx. 28mm to 140mm in the 35mm format) to accommodate a wide range of scenes and subjects, including landscapes. It also provides other convenient shooting functions, such as macro mode to capture dramatic close-up images from a minimum focusing distance of a mere one centimetre. An Intelligent Zoom function extends the zoom range to approximately 36 times (equivalent to 1008mm in the 35mm format) without compromising image quality, for superior telephoto photography and an interval-shooting mode, which comes in handy for fixed-point observation.

4. Six Macro Lights to assist close-up shooting, and a Self-Portrait Assist mode
By selecting the Digital Microscope mode, six LED Macro Lights ideally positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel for macro shooting, allow the WG-60 to provide bright, uniform illumination on a subject. ***The Macro Lights enable the user to clearly see a magnified view of the microscopic world undetectable by the naked eye on the camera’s LCD monitor, and effortlessly capture eye-catching close-up images. In order to minimize camera and subject shake, the Instant Illumination Enhance function allows the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the discharge level of the Macro Lights at the moment of shutter release. The Macro Lights also provide other useful functions, such as a Self-Portrait Assist mode, which uses the blink of an LED lamp to check if the subject’s face is captured within the picture frame, and the LED Lighting mode, which uses the Macro Lights as a lighting device in the dark.
*** When this mode is selected, the image size is fixed at 2.0 megapixels (at 16:9 proportions).

5. Underwater shooting mode
Specifically designed for underwater photography, the Underwater and Underwater Movie shooting modes optimize colour and contrast, based on the data of images actually captured under the water. These modes deliver sharp, true-to-life images by enhancing shades of red, which are lost in underwater photography, while effectively compensating for the loss of contrast caused by the diffusion of light in water. During Underwater mode, the Flash Off + Flash On option, allows the user to capture two images consecutively — with a single shutter release — one without flash and another with flash.

6. Full HD movie recording for extended shooting of high-quality movies
The WG-60 provides Full HD movie recording employing the H.264 recording format. Users can capture high quality extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16:9 proportions) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. To add some creative touches to movie recording, it also features a high-speed camera function**** for slow motion playback of captured movie clips and an interval movie function. A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also on the camera body for simultaneous output of Full HD movie clips and sound to external audio-visual devices.
**** When this function is selected, the recorded size is fixed at 1280 x 720 pixels.

7. Triple anti-shake protection to prevent blurred images in all applications
(1) Pixel Track SR mechanism
When recording still images, this advanced shake-reduction mechanism effectively compensates for camera shake by digitally processing affected images.

(2) Digital SR mode
When the camera detects low-lighting conditions in still-image shooting, this mode automatically raises the sensitivity up to as high as ISO 6400, making it possible to use a higher shutter speed and effectively minimize the adverse effects of camera shake and subject shake when dealing with poor lighting conditions.

(3) Movie SR mode
During movie recording, this mode effectively compensates for the misalignment of images caused by camera shake with exclusive software to produce beautiful, blur-free movie clips.
8. 2.7-inch LCD monitor with the Outdoor View Setting mode
The WG-60 comes equipped 2.7-inch LCD monitor with horizontally extended 16:9 proportions and approximately 230,000 dots. The monitor’s AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimizes annoying glare and reflections for a sharp, clear on-screen image even in bright sunshine during outdoor shooting. It also comes equipped with such convenient features such as the Outdoor View Setting mode, which easily sets the optimum monitor brightness level for a given lighting situation.

9. Other features
· A range of WG-series mount accessories (optional) to accommodate a range of shooting situations
· Compatibility with FlashAirTM wireless LAN SD memory cards
· Two remote control receptors (one in front and another in the back) to widen signal coverage
· Macro stand (included) to maintain a minimum focusing distance of one centimetre to the subject during extended observation and shooting of macro images
· High-speed Face Detection function to capture as many as 32 faces in focus in approximately 0.03 seconds (minimum); Smile Capture function to automatically release the shutter when the subject’s smile is detected
· Outdoor-friendly Style Watch function to display the time on the LCD monitor, using an extended push of the OK button when the camera’s power is turned off
· Delay-free, push button start of the playback mode, using an extended push of the playback button
· Auto Picture mode to automatically select the most appropriate shooting mode from 16 different scene modes
· A choice of 12 digital filters

VSCO adds new ‘Preset Views’ to its Android and iOS apps

17 Oct

Today, VSCO introduced Preset Views, an interface change within its mobile application that makes it easier to see how presets look on your photos.

The new feature provides three new viewing options when adding presets to your photos. In addition to the standard view, VSCO now lets you see previews of each preset in various sizes, from small thumbnail to full-width photos.

“The feature is designed to help creators continue to evolve their creativity by encouraging them to step outside of their comfort zones and experiment with different presets,” says VSCO.

VSCO also added a new grouping function that makes it easier to see what presets work best with certain types of photo. Until now, presets were only grouped in the various collections VSCO introduced. You could rearrange them as your needs desired, but it’s a time-consuming process. And you still have to know what presets work best for various types of photos.

Now, you can get a better feel for what filters work best for portraits compared to those more suited for landscapes or urban environments. It also includes groupings of filters such as “monochrome” or “vibrant” for images that would look better as black and white or those that could use a little saturation.

The new features should be live across VSCO for both Android and iOS smartphones. If you don’t have VSCO, you can download it for free for both Android and iOS.

Manfrotto adds new two-in-one tripod to its Befree lineup

14 Sep

Manfrotto has added a new two-in-one tripod to its Befree Live lineup — a tripod it calls ‘the most versatile model in the Befree range.’

Appropriately named the Manfrotto Befree 2N1, the contraption is both a tripod and monopod. ‘The Befree 2N1 is made to enable quick and easy switching from a tripod to a monopod,’ says Manfrotto. ‘After a half-turn anticlockwise, a red rubber ring will appear on the tripod leg, providing the user with visual feedback that the tube can be safely removed for use as a monopod.’

The Befree 2N1 comes in two versions: one with Manfrotto’s Quick Power Lock lever setup and one with its M-Lock twist setup. Both versions, which use Manfrotto’s 494 Ball Head with 200PL PRO Plate for mounting the camera to, hold up to 8.07kg/17.8lbs and fold down to 40.64cm/16in long. The legs extend using four dedicated sections and extends just shy of 152cm/60in for both models.

There’s also a kit version of the lever-lock Befree 2N1 that comes with Manfrotto’s fluid head and a dedicated case. This system is oriented more towards videography content capture.

Both versions of the Manfrotto Befree 2N1 tripods will retail for $ 220, while the video-centric kit version will retail for $ 240. You can pre-order all three models on B&H now. They’re set to ship later September 2018.

08 Sep

Pixelmator has announced an update to its Pixelmator Pro image editing software. Version 1.1.4 to brings new effects, a new AI-powered Auto Selective Color adjustment tool and more.

The Auto Selective Color feature uses machine learning to automatically apply selective color adjustments, improving specific colors in an images. A new Light Leak effect adds a vintage film look to your photos and the Bokeh effect simulates the shallow depth of field of a fast lens on a DSLR, similar to what we are seeing on many current smartphone cameras.

There is also a new Spin Blur effect which creates circular motion effects. The Noise effect is something we have seen before on other editing applications and simply lets you add grain to your images. Other new effects include Threshold, Mask to Alpha, Clouds, and more Tile and Distort effects.

Auto White Balance and Auto Lightness preserve skintones better and are 30 percent faster than in previous versions of the software

The Color Adjustments and Effects sub-menus now come with Copy, Paste, Reset and Flatten Adjustment options. In addition you can now use a new keyboard shortcut (O) to show the original image while editing.

You can find a full list of improvements and modifications on Pixelmator’s What’s New page. Pixelmator Pro can currently be downloaded for $ 29.99 from the Mac App Store. That’s a $ 30 discount off the regular price.
