Meike’s first autofocus lens is a new 85mm F1.8 prime that costs just $190

Budget optics manufacturer Meike has announced the release of an ultra-affordable 85mm F1.8 autofocus lens for Canon EF- and Nikon F-mount cameras that costs just $ 190.

The lens, which is the first autofocus lens Meike has produced, is constructed of nine elements in six groups, features an aperture range of F1.8-F22, has a minimum focusing distance of 85cm (33.5”) and uses a nine-blade aperture diaphragm. It also has a built-in microUSB port for updating firmware.

The lens measures in at 79mm long, 75mm diameter and weighs 420g (14.8oz). The 85mm F1.8 lens is currently listed as available on Meike’s online shop for just $ 190 (Canon EF, Nikon F). It comes with the lens, a lens hood, front/rear caps, and a microfiber pouch for transporting it in.

Sigma announces 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art for E-mount and L-mount

Sigma has launched its 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art, a fast portrait prime for Sony E and Panasonic/Leica/Sigma L-mount. The lens features 15 elements, including one aspherical and five SLD (special low dispersion). It has 11 aperture blades and its focus unit is driven by a high-speed stepping motor. The minimum focus distance of the 85mm F1.4 is 0.85m (34″) and the maximum magnification is 0.12x.

The lens’ aperture ring has a ‘click switch’, allowing users to choose between ‘clicky’ and smooth rotation, as well as a ‘lock switch’ to prevent accidental operation. As one would expect from a modern lens in Sigma’s ‘Art’ collection, it’s very well built and weather-sealed. Despite that, the lens weighs just 630 grams (1.4 pounds).

The 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art will go on sale later this month for $ 1199.

The AF motor system employs a stepping motor which is optimized for both phase detection AF and contrast AF. Hands-on with the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art is the latest in the company’s ‘DN’ (Digital Native) lens lineup, designed specifically for use with mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Like previous DN-series lenses, the 85mm F1.4 is available in two mounts: L (Sigma, Leica and Panasonic), and Sony E-mount.

New optical formula

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art might share a focal length and maximum aperture with the older 85mm F1.4 DG HSM Art (released in 2016) but the similarities end there. This is a completely new optical design, comprising 15 elements in 11 groups, with five SLD (super low-dispersion) elements and one aspherical element.

Sigma claims that this combination results in excellent sharpness at all apertures, and very well-controlled flare and ghosting: claims that appear to be born out in our initial shooting. Like all of the lenses in Sigma’s ‘Global Vision’ line (Art, Contemporary and Sport) each copy of the 85mm is tested using Sigma’s proprietary ‘A1’ MTF measuring system prior to shipping.

Smaller and lighter than previous 85mm F1.4 Art

Despite its ambitious optical construction, the new 85mm F1.4 is more than an inch shorter (94mm/3.7″, compared to 127mm/5″) and more than a pound lighter (635g/1.4lb), compared to 1.1kg/2.5lb) than the previous-generation 85mm F1.4 Art. Many of Sigma’s Art-series primes have felt rather heavy and bulky, but the new 85mm gives an impression of compactness and light weight, helped by its tapering barrel.

Build quality has not been sacrificed for the sake of weight though, and construction is in-line with what we’d expect: a mixture of aluminum and Sigma’s TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), complete with a brass mount. The lens is rated as ‘dust and splash-proof’.

Physical aperture ring

All of Sigma’s ‘DN’ lenses have been designed with video, as well as stills, in mind. As such, the new 85mm features a ‘clicky’ physical aperture ring, which can be ‘de-clicked’ if desired, for video use. If you’d rather adjust aperture via the camera, this ring can be locked in the ‘A’ position using a dedicated switch, to avoid accidental inputs.

This image also shows the lens’s ‘AF-L’ button, which locks autofocus by default, but can be customized via the menu system on a compatible camera.

Stepping motor for autofocus

The 85mm F1.4 is optimized for use with both contrast detection (Leica, Sigma and Panasonic) and phase detection (pretty much everyone else) autofocus systems, and uses a stepping motor, coupled with a small, lightweight focusing group. Unlike some other fast 85mm lenses we could mention, autofocus is fast, and it’s also quiet enough for use during video shooting. Although we haven’t been able to perform a side-by-side test, our impression is that focus is a little faster than the previous-generation 85mm F1.4 Art.

77mm filter thread and included hood

With the generously-sized hood attached, the 85mm F1.4 suddenly looks a whole lot bigger, but it can be reversed on the lens when you’re not shooting. The front filter ring is a very reasonable 77mm.

Sigma is aiming this lens at enthusiast and professional portrait photographers, and as such, it is equipped with 11 rounded aperture blades, to ensure circular apertures at wide-to-medium F-stops. Don’t plan on many closeups though: Much like its peers, minimum focus is 85cm (33.5″) and the maximum magnification ratio of 1:8.4 (0.12x) means you’re not going to be using the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DN for macro photography.

Compatible with Sigma USB DOCK UD-11

The L-mount version of the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN is compatible with Sigma’s UD-11 USB dock (not pictured). This mounts like a camera body onto the lens, and provides an easy way to update lens firmware and customize some aspects of operation.

The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN will be available later this month, in L and E-mounts, for $ 1199.

A mysterious firmware update turns the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 lens into an even faster F1.6 prime

The $ 400 Viltrox 85mm F1.8 lens is a popular choice for Sony E and Fujifilm X users due to its compelling blend of performance and value. Owners have remarked that the lens delivers sharp image quality even when shot wide open. It now appears that wide open can be made even wider with a firmware update allowing the lens to become an F1.6 prime.

Photographer Stefan Malloch has published a video tutorial, seen below, which shows how to use the USB port on the lens to update the lens. This update allows the lens to open its aperture wider, changing the maximum aperture from F1.8 to F1.6. With a simple firmware update, you can get an extra one-third of a stop of light gathering capability.

As PetaPixel notes, there are conflicting reports as to the origin of the firmware. Sony Addict reported that the firmware was released officially in China. FujiRumors, on the other hand, reached out to Viltrox and was told that firmware to turn the F1.8 lens into an F1.6 lens had not been released. All this is to say that installing (possibly unofficial) firmware into your lens is a risk with unknown consequences.

Supposing you still want to update your lens using Malloch’s video above, what can you expect from the Viltrox 85mm F1.6 lens? Malloch also published an overview video of the lens, including sample images.

As mentioned earlier, the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 (or F1.6) lens is available as a full-frame lens for Sony E mount or for the APS-C Fujifilm X system. The fast, autofocus-capable prime lens can focus as closely as 2.62′ (0.8m). The lens includes 10 elements across 7 groups, including 1 ED lens element and 4 ‘short-wavelength and high-transparency’ lens elements. The lens has a 72mm filter thread and weighs 636g (1.4 lbs.). Canon’s RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is ideal for close-ups and portraits

The Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is a relatively inexpensive telephoto prime lens that’s ideal for both close-up and portrait work. Ostensibly it appears similar in design to the RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM, and together with the RF 35/1.8, should make for a compelling package for wedding photographers wanting to shoot everything from groups to close-up portraits to macro detail shots. The RF 85mm can focus as close as 0.35m (13.8″) and offers a maximum magnification of 0.5x.

Optically, the lens comprises 12 elements in 11 groups, including one UD (ultra low dispersion) element to help reduce chromatic aberrations. On an EOS R or RP, the 85mm F2 offers five stops of image stabilization, but when you attach it to an EOS R5 or R6, with their built-in stabilization systems, Canon claims a benefit of eight stops thanks to the two-way communication between motion and gyro sensors in the camera body and lens. It uses a stepping motor to drive its focus group, so autofocus speeds are unlikely to be as fast as the company’s lenses with Nano USM focus drive systems, and it remains to be seen if focus drive is silent.

The lens is relatively compact, featuring a 67mm filter thread and weighing in at 500g / 1.1lbs. Nine aperture blades aid in producing circular out-of-focus highlights. The lens is not weather-sealed – you’ll need to step up (way up) to the F1.2 version for that.

The Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM will be available in October for $ 599.

Both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras have the ability to capture the action of a variety of fast-moving subjects with impressive accuracy and speed. When using the mechanical shutter, each can shoot up to 12 fps and up to 20 fps when using the completely silent shutter. Both cameras are the first to be outfitted with Canon’s advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II which utilizes up to approximately100 percent coverage of the AF area and EOS iTR AF X incorporating AF tracking algorithms using deep learning technology and enhanced readout speed of the CMOS sensor and processing speed thanks to the DIGIC X image processor. The 1,053 automatically selected AF Zones are made even more potent by the ability to detect the human eye, face or head as well as the eye, face or body of animals such as dogs, cats and even birds. The EOS R6 camera is well-equipped with a host of new features to push the limits of creativity for imaging enthusiasts. The combination of the EOS-1D X Mark III based 20.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and the DIGIC X image processor produces an ISO range of 100-102,400 and is expandable to 204,800. Internal video recording at 4K is capable up to 59.94 fps or 1080p up to 119.88 fps in 10 bit 4:2:2 Canon Log(H.265) or HDR PQ(H.265). The camera also features a built-in 0.5-inch OLED EVF with approximately 3.69 million dots and a 119.88 fps refresh ratevi. Additional features of the EOS R6 camera include:

Battery Accessory
The optional BG-R10 battery grip accessory will be available for both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras. The BG-R10 accommodates up to two batteries and is compatible with the new LP-E6NH, LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries. The convenient BG-R10 grip accessory can also improve handling for users while capturing portrait photography.

Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM
The Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is a high-performance and versatile super-telephoto zoom lens that will find its way into the bags of many photographers. The compact and lightweight lens features optical image stabilization of up to five stops* of shake correction with three different IS modes, including standard, panning and during exposure only. Two Nano USM motors are at the heart of this lens and provide users with high-speed, smooth and quiet auto focus with a minimum focusing distance of three feet. Additional features of the Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM include:

  • Rotation-Type zoom ring and torque adjustment allows for precision control and feel
  • Customizable control ring that enables photographers to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture or ISO

Canon RF600mm and 800mm F11 IS STM
The Canon RF600mm and RF800mm F11 IS STM lenses are the first fixed focal length super-telephoto RF lenses and are incredibly compact and lightweight. The portability of the new lenses is made even greater due to the ability for the lens barrel to retract and lock in place when the lenses are stowed away and not in use. Diffractive Optics technology helps to reduce the necessary number of lenses and greatly diminish the cost of the lenses, making them affordable for a broader group of photographers. Additional features of the Canon RF600mm and RF800mm F11 IS STM lenses include:

  • Lightweight – the RF600mm weighs approximately 2.05lb and the RF800mm weighs approximately 2.78lb, respectively
  • Compact size, RF600mm measures approximately 7.85inch and RF800mm with measures approximately 11.09inch when retracted, respectively

Canon RF85mm F2 MACRO IS STM
The third RF85mm lens in the RF lineup, the Canon RF85mm F2 MACRO IS STM is compact and lightweight, featuring a bright f/2 aperture helping to capture images that have exceptional bokeh. The lens features a maximum magnification of 0.5x and a minimum focusing distance of 1.15 feet, providing users with macro-photography capability. Additional features of the Canon RF85mm F2 MACRO IS STM include:

  • Optical Image Stabilization with up to five stops* of Shake Correction
  • Hybrid IS compensates for angular and shift camera shake during macro photography

RF Lens Extenders
Lens extenders have long been a practical and useful tool for a variety of photographers. That story continues with the introduction of the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x. The new lens extenders inherit the same high image quality, precision AF and reliability, such as being drip and dustproof, of EF lens extenders. When used in combination with the newly-released compatible lenses, the capturing range can be dramatically increased, providing consumers with additional use cases for their existing RF lenses.

Hands-on with Canon’s new RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM

Alongside a trio of telephoto lenses, Canon also announced a new 85mm this week. The RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is a compact, affordable alternative to the pro-oriented 85mm F1.2L, which can’t match the light-gathering power of its costly cousin, but adds optical image stabilization and a handy close-focusing ability. Not to mention it’s a whole lot easier to carry around.

Size and weight

At 500g (1.1 lbs) the 85mm F2 is far from a featherweight, but it’s less than half the weight of the 85mm F1.2. It’s nicely-balanced, too, and doesn’t feel heavy on an EOS R6. The filter thread is a very reasonable 67mm, so no need to hunt around for expensive, larger, less common filters.

Ergonomics

The RF 85mm F2 features a pretty clean, matte black, low-key design, with a broad rubber-clad focus ring in the middle of the barrel (manual focus is focus-by-wire, as we’d expect) and a customizable ‘clicky’ control ring at the front, nearest to the filter ring. The two rings are textured differently to help differentiate them by touch.

There’s a lot of polycarbonate in the body of the lens (our copy is made in Malaysia, for those who care about such things), and overall build quality seems very high. It should be noted, however, that Canon makes no claims about weather-sealing in this lens.

Optical construction

The RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is a lot less of a handful than the F1.2L, but it’s still a pretty advanced, complex design. Optical construction comprises 12 elements in 11 groups, including one UD (ultra low-dispersion) element for chromatic aberration control. A nine-bladed aperture ensures that out of focus highlights will be rendered as near-circles when the lens is shot near or wide open. Canon claims ‘beautiful bokeh’ from this lens, which should be a favorite of portrait photographers.

Close focusing

The ‘Macro’ in the full product name of this lens refers to its close focusing abilities, and its maximum reproduction ratio of 0.5X. Technically this isn’t true macro (that would be 1:1 reproduction) but manufacturers (not only Canon) have been playing fast and loose with that word for years, so we’ll forgive it. Especially since this kind of close focusing ability (you can focus down to 1.1 ft, or 35 cm) is so impressive in a lens of this kind. For (near) macro work, you can lock the lens’s autofocus to a range of 0.5m – 0.35m to prevent hunting.

We expect this macro capability will make this lens a handy kit – particularly when paired with the RF 35mm F1.8 – for portrait and wedding photographers who can quickly go close in for detail shots.

Speaking of autofocus, like its shorter focal length RF 35 cousin, the RF 85mm F2 uses a stepping motor to drive its focus group. Given our past experience with Canon’s STM motors, we expect autofocus speeds are unlikely to be as fast as the company’s lenses with Nano USM focus drive systems, and it remains to be seen if focus drive is silent.

Image Stabilization

The RF 85mm F2 features optical image stabilization, rated to five stops of correction (per CIPA, tested on an EOS R). Canon claims that when mounted on an EOS R5 or R6, photographers can expect a combined stabilization effect of up to eight stops with this lens, which will be hugely beneficial for the kind of closeup work that the lens is capable of. Regardless of what body it’s attached to, the 85mm F2’s ‘Hybrid I.S’ system is designed specifically to help with the kinds of rotational and up/down left/right movements that can create problems at very close focusing distances.

We’re unable to test stabilization performance (or autofocus, or image quality) in this pre-production sample, but these are all things that we want to try out when we get an opportunity. In the meantime, let us know what you think of Canon’s latest portrait prime lens in the comments.

Samyang/Rokinon Announces 14mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.4 Series II lenses

Samyang/Rokinon has now announced an update for two of its most popular pieces of glass:

The Samyang 14mm f/2.8 Series II

The 14mm f/2.8 and the 85mm f/1.4.

The Samyang 14mm f/2.8 and the 85mm f/1.4 are already highly-regarded among photographers looking to get strong images while keeping prices low (and who don’t mind full-time manual focus). The ultra-wide focal length of the 14mm is perfect for astrophotography, especially when combined with an f/2.8 maximum aperture. And the f/1.4 aperture on the 85mm is a great way to produce that gorgeous, creamy bokeh that portrait photographers want.

All for under $ 650 USD.

But now, with the announcement of the 14mm f/2.8 Series II and the 85mm f/1.4 Series II, Samyang/Rokinon has taken their product lineup a step further.

The 14mm f/2.8 Series II offers the same optics of the original Samyang 14mm, but now sports a focus lock; this allows you to set your point of focus and hold it in place, which is great for maintaining perfect focus in astrophotography, time-lapse, or other difficult-to-focus situations.

The Samyang 14mm Series II also features a “de-click” option, so that you can manually change the aperture along a near-infinite spectrum (rather than being forced to work in increments, which is the standard for most lenses). This is a great way to fine-tune your apertures in the field, and it also benefits video shooters who want to subtly alter exposure throughout a recording.

As for the 85mm f/1.4 Series II:

You still get the same excellent sharpness and bokeh, but Samyang has added a “de-click” feature to match the 14mm f/2.8 Series II.

And both lenses now offer weather sealing, which will be appreciated by astrophotographers, landscape photographers, and other outdoor shooters, and will make both lenses an easier sell for photographers that work in adverse conditions.

But perhaps the most enticing thing about the new Samyang lenses is the price:

You’ll be able to grab the 85mm f/1.4 Series II for just $ 400 USD, while the 14mm f/2.8 Series II will come in at $ 500 USD.

Sure, constantly using manual focus may come as a bit of a shock, especially if you’ve never used it before. But you’ll become an expert before long and, at such impressively low prices, these two lenses are hard to pass up.
