Atomos releases full Ninja V firmware update for recording 5.9K 12-bit ProRes Raw with Panasonic S1H

08 Aug

Atomos has announced the full firmware update for its Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables 5.9K ProRes Raw video capture from a Panasonic S1H.

It’s been just one week since the pre-release beta firmware was released alongside Panasonic’s S1H 2.1 firmware update, but the full version is up and ready to go. The full firmware update enables Ninja V units to record 12-bit ProRes Raw video over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. Also new is a 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode that makes it easier to record footage shot on anamorphic lenses.

To accompany the new recording options, Panasonic has released a new LUT that can be downloaded for free on its website. The Atomos Ninja V firmware update (AtomOS 10.52) can be downloaded from the Ninja V product page, under the ‘Support’ tab.

AtomOS 10.52 press release:

Atomos releases full free Ninja V update to enable 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW recording for the Panasonic LUMIX S1H

August 7, Melbourne, Australia: Atomos is thrilled to announce the dream of ultra-high resolution RAW video from a full-frame mirrorless camera is now a reality. Last week Atomos launched a Pre-Release Beta for Ninja V users to try out on their Panasonic LUMIX S1H. Today Atomos announces the full firmware update for the Ninja V.

From today Ninja V & Panasonic LUMIX S1H users will be able to record:

Simply stunning 12-bit RAW

The Ninja V captures the unprocessed highly detailed 12-bit RAW signal files directly from the full frame sensor of the S1H over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. These unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every detail from the S1H. The resulting ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows.

Anamorphic RAW

More and more cinematographers are now choosing to shoot with anamorphic lenses and the Ninja V and S1H combination caters to them with the new 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode. An even bigger world of cinematic opportunities opens up as the Ninja V and S1H can now be used as an A-camera or smaller B-camera on an anamorphic RAW production.

Improved color pipeline

LUMIX S1H ProRes RAW files recorded to the Ninja V can now benefit from an improved color pipeline in Apple Final Cut Pro X. Panasonic have published a new LUT based workflow that allows the enhanced potential of ProRes RAW files captured from the LUMIX S1H to be realised in the NLE software.

Ninja V advantage

The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple when the camera is attached with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the RAW image accurately in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing them to perfect their RAW video. The Ninja V then records the ProRes RAW data onto a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. When shooting is complete the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate offload and editing.

ProRes RAW the new standard

In addition to their ground-breaking combination of flexibility and performance, Apple ProRes RAW files are smaller than other RAW files – simplifying and accelerating file transfer, media management, and archiving. Even with the new higher 5.9K resolution, ProRes RAW files from the S1H can easily be edited on most modern Macs. ProRes RAW is fully supported in Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight and Grass Valley Edius.

This is available immediately; Ninja V users can download the free AtomOS update for their monitor-recorder directly from the Atomos website.

Over the past few months Atomos has created a series of content pieces with the Ninja V and Panasonic LUMIX S1H, from test footage, to setting up your Ninja V and S1H with PhotoJoseph, to hearing from creators like Stuart Morgan and Krzysztof Sieniawski and their experiences with the great combo of Ninja V & S1H. Panasonic announces 5.9K ProRes Raw video for Lumix DC-S1H

21 Apr

Panasonic has announced firmware V2.0 for the Lumix S1H that, alongside the usual bug fixes, adds the ability to output 5.9K or 4K Raw video data that can be captured as ProRes Raw when connected to an Atomos Ninja V recorder.

Raw video provides editors with more post processing flexibility than Log-encoded footage, including Panasonic’s own V-Log, and provides similar capabilities to Raw photo editing, such as the ability to set a new white balance after footage is shot.

Apple recently released a version 1.0 beta of ProRes Raw for Windows that added support to Adobe apps running on the Windows platform, including Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Availability on both Apple and Windows systems should make it easier for video shooters to adopt the codec.

Firmware V2.0 for the Panasonic S1H adds ProRes Raw video capture capability when paired with an Atomos Ninja V recorder.

The firmware, which doesn’t require a paid upgrade, adds 5.9K 16:9 capture from the full width of the sensor at up to 30p or 4K 17:9 capture from a Super 35 region at up to 60p. There’s also a 4:3 option for anamorphic Super 35 shooting. All modes are based on 12-bit output.

Unlike ProRes Raw capture on Nikon’s Z6, the Panasonic does not pixel skip to produce its Raw video data stream. Its viewfinder also continues to function when Raw data is being output, which is likely to be a benefit for anyone shooting hand-held footage.

A full suite of exposure support tools, including Wave Form Monitor, Vector Scope, Luminance Spot Meter, Zebra Pattern remains available.

Alongside Raw video options, a series of minor UI and handling improvements have been added, and a series of minor bugs fixed. The firmware will be available from May 25th.

Press Release:

Panasonic Releases Firmware Update Program for LUMIX S1H RAW Video Data Output over HDMI

Newark, NJ (April 20, 2020) – Panasonic has announced that the company will release the firmware update program for the LUMIX S1H Full-Frame mirrorless camera to enhance its performance and usability, as stated last September. In addition, it further complies with 3.5K Anamorphic 4:3. Panasonic commits to provide innovative solutions for professional film creation by enabling all S1H users to receive this firmware for free of charge.

The program will be available at LUMIX Global Customer Support website https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/ on May 25, 2020.

Canon announces C500 Mark II camera with 5.9K Cinema RAW Light recording

06 Sep

More than seven years after releasing the EOS C500, Canon has released its next-generation Cinema EOS System camera, the EOS C500 Mark II. The new camera builds upon its predecessors with an extensive list of new and improved features and technology.

At the heart of the EOS C500 Mark II is the same sensor found inside Canon’s EOS C700 camera, a5.9K full-frame 17:9 sensor, which Canon says offers more than 15 stops of dynamic range. Powered by Canon’s new Digic DV7 processor, the EOS C500 Mark II offers 5.9K internal Cinema RAW Light and 4K 4:2:2 10-bit XF-AVC recording. In addition to shooting 60 frames per second (fps) at 5.9K and 4K resolution, the EOS C500 Mark II can shoot up to 120 fps when dropped down to a cropped 2K resolution.

The EOS C500 Mark II also features Canon’s Dual Pixel autofocus technology, which covers roughly 80-percent of the image area on the sensors, and features user-changeable lens mounts with options for EF, PL and Cine EF mount. By unscrewing four hex screws located on the outside of the lens mount, it’s now possible to (comparatively quickly) switch from one mount to another without the need to send it in or make it a massive operation.

The camera, which weighs in at 1750g (3.86lbs), features built-in motorized ND filters at two, four and six-stop measurements that can be combined to achieve eight and ten stop levels as well. Media can be recorded to the two CFExpress card slots as well as an SD card slot for proxy media. Also new to a Canon EOS Cinema camera is a five-axis electronic image stabilizer.

The EOS C500 Mark II comes with the LCD LM-V2, a 4.3in touchscreen, as well as a user-removable 0.46in 1.77-megapixel OLED electronic viewfinder (EVF). Canon is also offering two extension units that add additional connections and ports for added versatility.

In addition to its new full-frame cinema camera, Canon also announced the DP-V3120, a 4K HDR reference monitor. The massive machine delivers 2000-nit HDR output and 0.001-nit full-screen black levels with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It features four 12G-SDI inputs for both 4K and 8K workflows and features a 17:9 aspect ratio, matching that of the EOS C500 Mark II.

The Canon EOS C500 Mark II is scheduled to be avaialble in December 2019 for an estimated retail price of $ 15,999. The DP-V3120 is scheduled to be available in November 2019 for a wallet-busting price of $ 39,000. You can find out more information on both products by visiting Canon’s EOS Cinema site.
