Laowa unveils $499 14mm F4 Zero-D lens for EF, F mount camera systems

16 Jul

Venus Optics has announced the release of the Laowa 14mm F4 Zero-D lens for Canon and Nikon DSLR camera systems.

The lens is constructed of 13 elements in 10 elements, including two extra-low dispersion ale nets and two aspherical elements. Like other Laowa ‘Zero-D’ lenses, the lens features near-zero distortion, despite its wide angle of view.

It’s also the first lens to get what Venus Optics called a focusing scale adjustment system, which allows you to calibrate the infinity point of the lens to ensure it’s exactly at the infinity mark based on the specific camera model you’re using it on. Venus Optics has shared the below tutorial showing owners what the calibration process looks like:

The lens features an integrated CPU for electronic control of the aperture with Canon EF mount camera bodies and an aperture coupling for Nikon F mount camera bodies. Other features includ a minimum focusing distance of 14.5cm (5.7″), uses a five-blade aperture diaphragm and uses a 67mm front filter thread.

Below is a gallery of sample images, provided by Venus Optics from a range of photographers:

As for measurements, the lens comes in at 72.5mm (2.85″) in diameter for both the EF and F mount versions. The Canon EF mount version measures 75mm (2.95″) long while the Nikon F mount version is 73mm (2.87″) long, while weighing 320g (11.3oz) and 360g (12.7oz), respectively.

The lens is available to order on Venus Optics’ website for $ 499.

Gnarbox 2.0 SSD is now available around the world starting at $499

03 Oct

MyGnar Inc. has announced worldwide availability of the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD. Originally funded on Kickstarter, the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD is now available to purchase from retailers around the globe and brings with it a few new features.

As detailed in our original coverage, Gnarbox 2.0 SSD is a rugged storage solution that works hand-in-hand with a collection of apps to make it easy to import, sort, edit and export multimedia content while on the go.

The Gnarbox 2.0 SSD offers a 2.4 Ghz Quad-Core processor, 4GB of RAM and up to 1TB of NVMe SSD storage. Photos and videos can be imported to the device using the onboard SD card slot (up to 75MB/s) or one of the two onboard USB-C ports (up to 350MB/s) and Micro HDMI port is onboard to show photos off on any HDMI comparable display. The battery inside is charged via USB-C and is rated for three to six hours of use.

Gnarbox has also announced two new features the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD supports. First, MyGnar has partnered with Camera Bits, Inc. to power its Gnarbox Selects App using Photo Mechanic’s image processing technology, Raw file support and metadata tagging tools. Additionally, the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD can now be connected to iPad Pro devices via USB-C if you prefer a tethered connection.

Although the specs themselves are impressive, it’s the connectivity that makes the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD shine. When used with iOS devices, the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD works seamlessly with Lightroom CC and video editing application LumaFusion, making it easy to edit media when out and about.

The Gnarbox 2.0 SSD is available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities for $ 499, $ 599 and $ 899, respectively. In addition to Gnarbox’s website, it’s also available at Amazon and B&H Photo.

12 Nov

US cellphone network AT&T will sell Samsung’s Galaxy Camera from November 16th at a price of $ 499. The Android 4.1 connected camera, which essentially adds a 21x zoom compact camera to a Galaxy SIII smartphone (with the omission of phone function), will cost the same amount with or without a data contract – rather than being subsidized by the carrier, as smartphones usually are. Anyone buying a Samsung smartphone at the same time can receive up to a $ 100 discount. The AT&T version of the camera will offer a HSPA+ connection, not the faster LTE system.
