Lexar release new ‘Professional’ 3-in-1 and ‘Compact’ 2-in-1 card readers

Lexar has announced a pair of new multi-card readers, the Professional Multi-Card 3-in-1 Reader and the Compact Multi-Card 2-in-1 Reader.

Professional Multi-Card 3-in-1 Reader

The Professional Multi-Card 3-in-1 Reader features slots for SD, microSD and CompactFlash cards, with transfer speeds up to 312MB/s for UHS-II SD and microSD cards, and up to 160MB/s for CompactFlash cards. The reader is also backward-compatible with UHS-I SD and microSD cards up to 170MB/s and features a USB 3.1 (Type C) port for connecting to your computer or mobile device.

The Lexar Professional Multi-Card 3-in-1 Reader, which comes with a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable, will be available to purchase later this month for $ 29.99 at authorized Lexar retailers.

Compact Multi-Card 2-in-1 Reader

Lexar has also announced the Compact Multi-Card 2-in-1 Reader built around a USB Type-A (3.1) connector that features maximum transfer speeds of 312MB/s through its two slots for USH-II SD and microSD cards. It too is backward-compatible with UHS-I SD and microSD cards with transfer speeds up to 170MB/s.

The Lexar Multi-Card 2-in-1 USB 3.1 Reader will also be available later this month for $ 19.99 at authorized Lexar retailers.

Lomography’s 3-in-1 Neptune lens system is officially on sale

After raising $ 585,085 through Kickstarter earlier this year, Lomography is finally ready to release its Neptune three-in-one lens system for sale to the general public. This odd system uses a single lens base that accepts three different front element groups to can create three individual focal lengths.

The Neptune system provides 35mm f/3.5, 50mm f/2.8 and 80mm f/4 optical configurations via the interchangeable front groups, and two switchable iris units. The kits are available in Nikon, Canon and Pentax mounts and cost £840/$ 990.

The kits come with all three front element groups—called Despina, Thalassa and Proteus—as well as a set of cut-out stops that influence the shape of out-of-focus highlights to create stars, discs and crosses, among others. A set of adapters is also available for MFT, Fujifilm X and Sony NX cameras that work with the Nikon F and Canon EF mount versions.

Alpine Labs’ Spark 3-in-1 camera trigger seeks funding on Kickstarter

Alpine Labs, the company behind the Pulse camera remote, is back on Kickstarter with a more powerful and versatile triggering device. The Spark camera remote allows for triggering your camera in three ways: you can either use it as an infrared wireless remote, control, plug it into your camera with a cable and use it as a wired remote, or connect it to your smartphone and a dedicated app via Bluetooth to unlock a variety of creative trigger options.

The app offers customizable settings and lets you shoot timelapses, HDR brackets and long exposures and can trigger up to three cameras at once. Using the infrared connection you can trigger single shots or capture time lapses at one-second intervals by holding-down the shutter button.

The cable connection offers more reliability and doesn’t require line of sight to your camera’s infrared sensor. According to Alpine Labs the button battery will work for over 2,000 hours of use. In addition the device works with a large number of cameras. The Spark Kickstarter campaign will be running until May 20. Until then you can reserve a Spark device for $ 44 which is 25 percent off the envisaged future retail price.

3-in-1 Cargo Shelters: Expandable Containers Triple in Size

Shipping container shelters combine the appeal of ultimate portability with rugged durability, but these structures add another dimension lacking in the default configuration: three times as much space thanks to their transforming designs. Below are four examples with varying degrees of technological sophistication for a wide range of applications.

The RDSS (Rapid Deployment Shelter System) shown above can be deployed by one person in less than two minutes, expanding into a 400-square-foot, rigid-walled shelter – all from a single 20-foot ISO (International Standards Organization) shipping container module.

While the same company offers a variety of similarly convertible solutions, the particular model in the video comes equipped with on-board heating and air conditioning systems and its own generator. The units can be sent by ship or rail, towed by trucks or flown by helicopters and stacked nine containers high.

Three-in-one cargo modules are made by a variety of manufacturers for deployment under various conditions, including military use, communications headquarters, medical triage, disaster relief centers, homes or offices – the one above is from Mobile Shelter Systems.

A soft-walled variant on the same theme of spatial expansion, the above patent-pending design unfolds two side panels that become floors with curved ceilings arcing overhead. A lower-tech approach, to be sure, but also one that could theoretically be done for much less money and in a do-it-yourself fashion for those inclined to create their own shipping container building.

While less suited for rugged outdoor use, any discussion of convertible shipping container spaces should include a mention of the Illy Push-Button House (which has both commercial and residential applications) designed by Adam Kalkin, the sides of which fold down to form an open-air living room area or temporary storefront space.
