Sony announces compact, travel-friendly a7C 24MP full-frame mirrorless camera

Sony has announced the a7C, a compact 24MP full-frame mirrorless camera. The company heralds it as the world’s smallest full-frame camera with image stabilization.

The a7C camera crams in most of the a7 III’s specifications, including 5-axis image stabilization, 10 fps shooting with autofocus, and oversampled 4K video into a body that’s smaller in every dimension than the existing camera. A one-piece magnesium alloy structure helps keep the weight down (22% less than the a7 III, at 509g / ~18oz).

Despite the size reduction, Sony has made room for a large NP-FZ100 battery, which powers the a7C to a rating of 740 shots per charge using the rear screen or 680 using the viewfinder.

The viewfinder is perhaps the most obvious area in which compromises to the specification have been made: the a7C uses a smaller-than-usual 1cm (0.39″-type) viewfinder panel. So although on paper, the 2.36M dot resolution is a match for the a7 III, the magnification ends up being a rather low 0.59x.

Alongside the a7C, Sony has announced a collapsible 28-60mm F4-5.6 kit zoom. It’s a manually extending zoom lens, that when retracted ensures a small camera/lens combination.

The a7C will be available in late October with a list price of $ 1799 body-only or $ 2099 with the new FE 28-60mm 4-5.6mm zoom lens.

Sony Electronics Introduces Alpha 7C Camera and Zoom Lens, the World’s Smallest and Lightest[i] Full-frame Camera System

SAN DIEGO, CA – September 14, 2020 – Today, Sony Electronics Inc. announced several additions to an already impressive imaging lineup — the Alpha 7C full-frame camera (model ILCE-7C), the FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 (model SEL2860) zoom lens and HVL-F28RM flash.

The Alpha 7C is the world’s smallest and lightest[ii] full-frame body with uncompromising performance, featuring advanced AF (autofocus), high-resolution 4K video[iii] capabilities and more. When paired with the world’s smallest and lightest[iv] FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 standard zoom lens, this versatile combination delivers an experience unlike any other, maximizing portability and versatility without sacrificing any of the power of full-frame imaging. The HVL-F28RM flash allows users to broaden their photo expressions with outstanding compactness, and an intelligent light intensity control linked to camera face detection[v].

New Alpha 7C: Uncompromised Full-frame Performance in a Compact Design
The new Alpha 7C combines Sony’s full-frame image quality, advanced AF capabilities and versatile video shooting functions in a stunningly light and compact design. The new camera features a 24.2MP (approx. effective) 35mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS sensor and BIONZ X™ image processing engine, offering high sensitivity, outstanding resolution, 15-stop[vi] wide dynamic range and high-speed image data processing.

Measuring only 4.9 inches x 2.8 inches x 2.2 inches (124.0mm x 71.1mm x 59.7mm) and weighing just 18oz (509g)[vii], the Alpha 7C is similar in size and weight to an APS-C camera[viii], with only 1 percent more weight than the Alpha 6600. The Alpha 7C achieves the world’s smallest and lightest compact body[ii] through upgraded 5-axis in-body stabilization and shutter units, and the utilization of magnesium alloy monocoque construction, often used in the bodies of cars and aircraft. Even in this compact body, the Alpha 7C features a 5-step[ix] stabilization effect that allows for shooting snaps without a tripod. Moreover, despite the compact body, the high-capacity NP-FZ100 battery provides enough power for long shooting durations and to capture up to an industry-leading[x] 740 images[xi] when using the LCD monitor, or 680 images[xi] when using the viewfinder.

Outstanding Full-frame Image Quality

Sony’s new Alpha 7C combines high resolution with low noise for excellent image quality at all sensitivities, offering the user stunning image quality for shooting everyday photography and movies such as nature, portraits, sports, street photography and more. Standard ISO extends up to 51,200 and is expandable from ISO 50-204,800[xii] for low-light environment captures with low noise. The Alpha 7C also supports 16-bit processing and 14-bit RAW output[xiii] for natural gradations.

Advanced Autofocus

Using AI-driven functions, the Alpha 7C’s Real-time Tracking[xiv] maintains accurate focus automatically while the shutter button is half-pressed. In addition, “Tracking On + AF-On” is now assignable to a custom key and can be activated at once while the AF-ON button is pressed. Moreover, the intended subject can be specified just by touching it on the monitor when “Touch Tracking” has been turned ON via the menu and is available for both stills and movies. The Alpha 7C’s AF functions also feature Real-time Eye AF for both humans and animals to achieve fast and accurate focus[xvi]. When using Real-time Tracking while “Face/Eye Priority in AF” is ON with a human subject, the subject’s eye and face is detected and locked on in real-time with extremely high tracking precision.
The Alpha 7C provides wide, fast, reliable AF that locks onto the intended subject instantly without losing focus, thanks to its 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system covering approximately 93 percent of the image area, with an additional 425 contrast-detection points to ensure reliable focus, even in busy environments.

The Alpha 7C also features continuous shooting at up to 10 fps[xvii] with AF/AE (autoexposure) by using a newly developed shutter unit and refined image processing system. It is also possible to shoot continuously at up to 8 fps[xvii] in live view mode, with minimal viewfinder/monitor display lag for easy, stable framing, even with intense subject motion. The Alpha 7C allows up to approximately 223 JPEG (Fine L) images, 115 compressed RAW images, or 45 uncompressed RAW images to be captured in one continuous burst[xviii], and achieves highly accurate and reliable AF precision in light down to EV-4[xix]. These features make it easier to capture fast moving subjects in challenging environments.

Expanded Video Capabilities

Full-frame full-pixel readout without the need for pixel binning makes it possible to capture more than twice[xx] the amount of data required for 4K video (QFHD: 3840 x 2160)[iii], which is then oversampled to produce high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. In addition, the Alpha 7C supports HDR (HLG[xxi]) and S-Log/S-Gamut profiles, Slow & Quick motion, high-speed full HD recording at 120 fps[iii] and other advanced video features for additional creative freedom.

Furthermore, the Alpha 7C features Real-time Eye AF (human) for video shooting. The eye is automatically tracked with high precision and reliability so that the operator can concentrate on the content rather than focus operation. Users can also customize AF Transition Speed in seven settings, and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity in five settings, in their preferences. Touch Tracking functionality is also available for movie shooting.

The Alpha 7C features a side-opening vari-angle LCD monitor, making it easy to record selfies, overhead shots, low ground-level shots or whatever the user requires. The MOVIE button has been positioned on the top of the camera making it easier to operate while recording in selfie mode. The new Alpha 7C not only records high-quality video, but also high-quality audio. A digital audio interface has been added to the camera’s Multi Interface (MI) Shoe, allowing the ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adaptor Kit can be connected to input digital audio signals directly to the MI shoe for cleaner, clearer audio recordings. Like other MI shoe accessories, no cables or batteries are required, providing unrestrained freedom for Alpha system moviemaking. Headphone and microphone jacks are also provided to accurately monitor recorded sound, and metadata attached to movie footage shot vertically on the camera allows the footage after transfer to the smartphone or similar device, to also be replayed and edited in the vertical position.

Designed for Reliable Operation

The Alpha 7C is designed with the user in mind. The touch panel LCD monitor is a large touch-sensitive 3.0 type with approximately 921 thousand dots, providing optimal visibility even in bright outdoor conditions, and supporting touch focus, tracking and shutter operations. The Alpha 7C also features a high-quality view mode for finer, more natural detail in addition to a 2.35 megadot (approx.) XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ EVF. The Alpha 7C offers functions that simplify operation during and after shooting, such as Fn button customizations and more. It is also dust and moisture resistant[xxii] to support shooting needs in challenging environments.

To simplify workflow needs, Wi-Fi compatible wireless-communication functions allows images and movies to be directly transferred[xxiii] to a smartphone or tablet for convenient sharing, viewing or saving. In addition to the conventional 2.4GHz band, support for the 11ac standard allows transfer via 5GHz band (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac)[xxiv] so that users can select that stable and high-speed transfer with low interference. A USB Type-C® connector that supports SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps (USB 3.2) is also provided, allowing fast transfer of images during PC remote shooting and power supply from external mobile batteries.

New FE 28-60mm F4-5.6: The World’s Smallest and Lightest[iv] Full-frame Zoom Lens with High Image Quality

The new FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 offers the world’s smallest and lightest[iv] form factor in a standard zoom lens, delivering high optical performance that achieves the high-resolution depiction of full-frame everywhere in the image. Optimal arrangement of the three aspherical lens elements effectively suppresses aberrations throughout the zoom range and realizes high resolution from corner to corner. A minimum focus distance of 0.99 foot (0.3m) (wide-angle) to 1.48 feet (0.45m) (telephoto) delivers close-up capability, making it perfect for everyday use or vlogging with a gimbal or grip.

At 5.9oz (167g) and 2.6 inches dia. x 1.8 inches length (66.6 mm dia. x 45 mm length), along with its mechanical and optimal optical design that features a retracting structure, the FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 achieves unrivaled compactness and lightness, allowing users to easily carry it all the time. From everyday shooting to scenery, portraits and travel, it’s the ideal lens for any type of on-the-go shooting in a wide variety of environments. When combined with the Alpha 7C, the combination achieves uncompromising full-frame performance with the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame camera and lens system[i]. Even with its compact size and light weight, the FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 is dust and moisture resistant[xxii] and accepts a variety of 40.5mm filters.

The FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 delivers high-speed, high-accuracy AF allowing for Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF, using a linear motor. In addition to Sony’s advanced AF capabilities, the FE 28-60mm F4-5.6 features an internal focus design which leaves the lens length unchanged with focus motion and close-up shots, enabling users to easily capture a wide variety of content from regular movie shooting to comfortable vlogging.

New HVL-F28RM: Compact Flash with Light Intensity Control Linked to Camera Face Detection[v]

The HVL-F28RM is a compact flash designed to match Sony’s mirrorless cameras for a compact, manageable system, and offers the type of reliable, stable performance that only a genuine Sony product can provide. When compared to the HVL-F32M, the HVL-F28RM features a 12 percent reduction in volume and 7 percent reduction in weight. This compact, easy-to-use flash unit delivers the capabilities and dependability to meet the needs of both professional and advanced amateur content creators.

The HVL-F28RM offers consistent GN28[xxv] light output, optimized light distribution and continuous flash performance that won’t interrupt the user’s workflow, as well as stable radio wireless communication and multi flash radio control. The new flash also features Sony’s newly introduced flash control linked to camera face detection[v] advanced technology. When used with a compatible camera, the balance between the light falling on the subject’s face and ambient light is evaluated to automatically adjust accurate white balance so that the subject’s face is rendered with natural, lifelike color. In addition, flash compensation, light ratio, and other detailed flash parameters can be controlled directly from a compatible camera[xxvi]. A camera custom key can be assigned to call up the flash parameter display so that adjustments can be made while looking through the viewfinder and gripping the camera. Flash parameters are shown in the selected camera display language.

A newly developed “Metal Shoe Foot with Rugged Side Frame”[xxvii] that also houses the unit’s electrical contacts offers improved resistance to physical shock and impact from all directions. The Multi Interface foot is fabricated from metal for higher strength. The HVL-F28RM also features a dust and moisture resistant[xxii] design. When the HVL-F28RM is mounted and locked onto the Alpha 7C, Alpha 7S III, Alpha 7R IV and Alpha 9 II, durability to dust and moisture is improved, even when used in challenging outdoor environments.

The HVL-F28RM also features simple, intuitive operation with minimal controls including +/- light level buttons, pairing button, test button and lock lever. Plenty of light is available for bounce applications. The flash angle can also be set as required via 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 120 degree click stops for easy positioning. The new flash also features a built-in wireless radio trigger for reliable flash triggering when mounted on a compatible camera[xxvi] and paired with an off-camera unit. When used as a transmitter, the HVL-F28RM can control up to 15 flash and/or receiver units in 5 groups[xxviii] at distances of up to 114 feet (35 meters)[xxix] for extraordinary lighting control and versatility. The HVL-F28RM is powered by two AA (LR6) alkaline or NiMH batteries. A fresh pair of alkaline batteries can provide power for up to 110 continuous flashes (1/1 manual flash with alkaline batteries)[xxix].

Canon’s 32MP chip marks the end of the 24MP APS-C era

The 32MP sensor in the EOS 90D not only tells us about Canon’s APS-C future but also puts pressure on other camera makers to move beyond the 24MP Sony Semiconductor chips that have underpinned so many models

If you’ve bought an APS-C camera in the past few years, there’s a reasonable chance it was built around one of the 24MP sensors from Sony Semiconductor. Since the first version arrived, back in the NEX-7 and a77, it’s been at the heart of a series of excellent cameras from Nikon, Pentax, Ricoh, Fujifilm and, of course, Sony itself.

But the arrival of two newer, higher pixel-count sensors, both of which outperform those 24MP chips in meaningful ways, is likely to herald the end of the 24MP era.

The sensor in the NEX-7 expanded on the excellent low noise, high dynamic range performance of the 12 and 16MP CMOS ‘Exmor’ chips but, especially in its later, copper-wired version, helped usher-in the era of 4K video shooting. But time and technology move on, and the impressive results we saw from Canon’s new 32MP sensor move the battle to higher resolutions, which will push other camera makers to demand more from their own suppliers.

Closing the gap

Canon’s own 24MP sensors closed much of the DR gap that had existed between their cameras and the Sony Semi-based ones, but our DR testing of the 90D suggests the disparity is now even smaller. There’s still a visible difference, but it’s getting small enough that it’d only keep you awake at night if you shot two cameras side-by-side.

And offering more

Having all but caught up in this previous area of weakness, the 32MP Canon pulls ahead in other respects: paired with a sharp lens, the new sensor will resolve recognizably more detail than a 24MP camera can. Its high ISO noise performance looks good, too, when compared at a common output size. And that’s without even considering the lower risk of artifacts that Canon’s dual-pixel design offers, compared with other on-sensor PDAF implementations.

Even scrutinized at 1:1 level (which isn’t necessarily the most natural use of 32MP), the 90D’s sensor can produce impressive amounts of detail.

4K keeps rolling

We were rather less impressed with the Canon chip when it comes to video. Its full-width output is noticeably less detailed than most of its contemporaries. Some of this may be down to overly conservative sharpening and a desire to avoid aliasing, but the resolution capture appears to be lower even when compared with cameras natively sampling a 3840 x 2160 pixel region, let alone the results from a chip that oversamples.

But this chink in Canon’s armor doesn’t leave room for the 24MP chip to strike back. Because, even in its faster, copper-wired iteration, the Sony Semiconductor sensor is starting to show its age. Rolling shutter is visible (often to an unpleasant degree) on many of the cameras that try to pull 4K from these 24MP sensors. However, it’s not just the Canon chip that they have to now compete with.

The 26MP sensor in Fujifilm’s X-T3 not only delivers 4K 60p, for those who need it, but it also delivers detailed 4K 30p with impressively low rolling shutter rates.

For video, the best APS-C chip on the market is arguably the 26MP chip in Fujifilm’s X-T3 and X-T30 model. These are almost certainly Sony Semiconductor products, too, capable of much less jello-prone oversampled 4K and even 4K/60p if you can live with a bit of a crop.

In some parallel universe, it would be the 4K-capable 28MP chip from Samsung’s NX1 that we’d be recognizing here. Sadly its low sales and Samsung’s withdrawal from the market meant the 24MP era lasted rather longer

With the 24MP sensors looking outdated in terms of both stills and video performance, it’s likely we’ll see more cameras moving to these newer, higher resolution sensors. Despite what you may have heard, the ‘megapixel race’ is far from over. And new cameras will be all the better for it.

Ricoh GR III, with updated lens, 24MP APS-C sensor and in-body IS to ship in March

Five months after its development announcement, the Ricoh GR III will be shipping this March for $ 899. Unlike the GR II, which was a very minor upgrade to the original, the major components on the GR III are all-new.

The controls have received a major shake-up as the GR III becomes the first in the series to use a touchscreen. The screen is a 3.0″, 1.04M-dot LCD, with all of the usual features like AF point selection, menu navigation and image review onboard.

It also gains image stabilization, with a 3-axis sensor-shift system offering shake reduction rated at up to four stops. This ‘SR’ system can also be used to simulate an AA filter for when moiré reduction is desired. And there’s now an ultrasonic dust reduction system for the sensor, which is perhaps a nod to the dust problems that some encountered on the GR I and II.

The GR III’s autofocus system has been overhauled, with the addition of on-sensor phase detection. This, along with a redesigned lens, gives us hope that the GR II’s autofocus will be quicker than its predecessors. Ricoh is yet to provide any technical details but says it will be ‘faster and more responsive.’

The GR III’s 28mm equiv. F2.8 lens has six elements in four groups, with two elements being aspherical. The lens can now focus as close as 6cm (2.4″), compared to 10cm (3.9″) on the previous models. The GR III continues to offer a built-in 2-stop ND filter.

The resolution of the GR III’s APS-C sensor has been bumped from 16MP to 24MP, with a fully expanded ISO range of 100 – 102,400. The GR III can now record 1080/60p video, but no 4K. Ricoh has added a Type-C USB 3.0 port on the camera (which can be used to charge the battery,) and connectivity options now include Bluetooth in addition to Wi-Fi.

Two things that the GR III lost are its built-in flash and a fair amount of its battery life. The latter has plunged from 320 shots to 200 shots per charge – a 38% drop – despite using a higher capacity battery. More than likely, the addition of in-body IS puts the biggest hit on battery life.

As mentioned above, the GR III will be yours to purchase in March for $ 899. A new 0.75x wide-angle adapter (GW-4) will also be available for $ 249.

Vivo V9 smartphone packs a 24MP front-facing camera and AI selfie software

Chinese phone manufacturer Vivo has launched a new flagship smartphone called the V9. This mid-tier model sports a design clearly inspired by the iPhone X, as well as one other very notable feature: a 24MP F2.0 front-facing camera. Whereas many smartphones still feature a low-resolution front camera, Vivo elected to put its higher-resolution camera on the front and pair it with its Face Access 2.0 security feature and AI-based Face Beauty selfie software.

As with previous Vivo models (and in case the front-facing camera resolution isn’t evidence enough), the V9 focuses on high-end selfies as a selling point. In this case, Vivo offers a feature called AI Face Beauty that is said to use machine learning determine things about the person featured in the selfie such as age and skin tone. That feature will ensure selfies “truly represent” the user’s beauty, according to The Verge.

The user will also have access to AR Stickers and will be able to unlock the phone using the front camera with Vivo’s Face Access feature.

On the back, dual 16MP + 5MP cameras, and inside there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SoC, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage. Finally, you’ll use the phone through its 6.3-inch 2280 x 1080 19:9 FullView 2 display, complete with much-maligned iPhone X-like notch.

The phone has launched in India where it is priced at Rs 22,990 / $ 355 USD / 284 EUR. Availability and cost in other markets isn’t clear at this time.

Sony launches a7 III: sub-$2000 24MP full frame mirrorless with a7R III’s advances

Sony has announced the a7 III, a sub-$ 2000 image-stabilized 24MP full frame mirrorless camera that incorporates many of the features and improvements brought in with the a7R III. Primary among these are the introduction of a BSI sensor, along with the larger capacity ‘Z’ battery, AF joystick and the EyeAF feature that impressed us so much on the 42MP model.

The company says the AF system is derived from the one in the a9 and performs twice as fast as the one on the a7 II. Its 693 AF points offer 93% frame coverage and are supported by 425 contrast-detection AF points.

The a7 III gains the same ‘Front End LSI’ pre-processor that enabled many of the feature and speed improvements in the a7R III. This includes 10 frame per second shooting that can be combined with continuous AF and a buffer of up to 177 JPEG images.

24p 4K video capture is taken from a 6K region of the sensor, while 30p shooting comes from a roughly 5K region with a 1.2x crop. The camera offers both S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma curves for shooting wide dynamic range scenes or Hybrid Log Gamma for playing back directly on high dynamic range displays without the need for post-processing.

Both internal video capture and HDMI output remain limited to 8-bit, which can limit the degree of processing flexibility for Log footage. Internal recording is up to 100 Mbps 8-bit 4:2:0, while HDMI out is 8-bit 4:2:2, meaning twice the color resolution. It can also shoot 1080/120p, which can be output either as normal-speed video or conformed down as slow-motion footage.

As with the a7R III, the a7 III inherits the same body shape and battery first introduced in the sports-orientated a9. This not only means a more comfortable hand grip but also the NP-FZ100 battery that gave a 2.2x increase in battery life on the high-res model. The Z-type battery allows the camera to offer 610 shots per charge (710 using the rear screen). This is a little more than double that of its predecessor an the most of any mirrorless camera yet.

The larger body also means the a7 III gains the AF joystick and button layout from the a7R III, including dedicated AF-On and Protect/Rate buttons. These, along with the revised menus, made the a7R III easier than ever to configure and work with, so should be a similarly big step forward for the basic a7 series. The a7 III also gains touchscreen control.

The a7 III uses the same 2.36m dot OLED viewfinder as its predecessor, giving a 1024 x 768 pixel view, rather than the higher-res version in the a7R III. However, updated optics mean the panel now provides a larger view with 0.78x magnification, up from 0.71x on the previous camera.

In keeping with recent Sony models, there is no support for the in-camera ‘Playmemories Camera Apps.’

The camera will be available from April at a cost of $ 1999, body-only or will be available in a kit with a 28-70mm lens.

Spectacular Full-frame Image Quality

The newly developed 24.2MPi back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor is paired with a front-end LSI that effectively doubles the readout speed of the image sensor, as well as an updated BIONZ X™ processing-engine that boosts processing speed by approximately 1.8 times compared to the ?7 II. These powerful components work together to allow the camera to shoot at faster speeds while also enabling its impressive ISO range of 100 – 51200 (expandable to ISO 50 – 204800 for still images) and an overall 1.5 stopix improvement in image quality. The camera also features a massive 15-stopii dynamic range at low sensitivity settings, ensuring outstanding overall performance at all settings and in all shooting conditions, with significant advancements in accurate color reproductions of skin tones and the vibrant colors of nature.

Significant Advances in AF Speed and Performance

The innovative new ?7 III full-frame mirrorless camera features a level of AF performance that has been largely improved over the ?7 II, including the addition of 4D FOCUS™ capabilities. The new camera has 425 contrast AF points that work with a 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system inherited from the acclaimed ?9 model. This innovative AF system covers approximately 93% of the frame, ensuring reliable focusing and tracking for even the most difficult to capture subjects.

AF response and tracking has also been greatly improved in the new camera, with almost 2xii the focusing speed in low-light condition and 2xii the tracking speed compared to the previous model as a result of the faster image sensor readout. This allows complex and unpredictable motion to be captured with far greater precision and accuracy.

The acclaimed Eye AF feature is also available in the new camera, even in AF-C mode, which is extremely useful for situations where the subject is turning around, looking down or otherwise obstructed. It also works when the ?7 III is being used with Sony’s A-mount lenses with an optional LA-EA3 adaptor[x]. Additional improvements in focusing flexibility include the addition of a multi-selector or ‘joystick’ for moving focusing points quickly, the addition of touch focusing capability, AF availability in Focus Magnifier mode, an ‘AF On’ button and much more.

Speed to Capture Every Decisive Moment

The new ?7 III is equipped with an updated image processing system that allows it to shoot full resolution images at up to 10 fpsiii with continuous, accurate AF/AE tracking for up to 177 Standard JPEG images, 89 compressed RAW images or 40 uncompressed RAW images[xi]. This high speed mode is available with either a mechanical shutter or a completely silent shootingiv, adding to the immense flexibility of the camera. The camera can also shoot continuously at up to 8 fpsiii in live view mode with minimal lag in the viewfinder or LCD screen.

For added convenience, while large groups of burst images are being written to the memory card, many of the cameras key functions are operable, including access to the ‘Fn’ (Function) and ‘Menu’ buttons, image playback and several other menus and parameters including image rating and other functions that facilitate on-location image sorting.

Additionally, if there is fluorescent or artificial lighting present in a shooting environment, users can activate the Anti-flicker[xii] function to allow the ?7 III to automatically detect frequency of the lighting and time the shutter to minimize its effect on images being captured. This minimizes any exposure or color anomalies that can sometimes occur at the top and bottom of images shot at high shutter speeds.

High Quality 4K Video

The new ?7 III is an outstanding video camera as well, offering 4Kvi (3840×2160 pixels) video recording across the full width of the full-frame image sensor. In video mode, the camera uses full pixel readout without pixel binning to collect about 2.4x[xiii] the amount of data required for 4K movies, and then oversamples it to produce high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth.

An HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)[xiv] picture profile is available on the ?7 III as well, which supports an Instant HDR workflow, allowing HDR (HLG) compatible TV’s to playback beautiful, true-to-life 4K HDR imagery. Further, both S-Log2 and S-Log3 are available for increased color grading flexibility, as well as Zebra functionality, Gamma Display assist and proxy recording. The camera can also record Full HD at 120 fps at up to 100 Mbpsvi, allowing footage to be reviewed and eventually edited into 4x or 5x slow motion video files in Full HD resolution with AF tracking.

Upgraded Build, Design and Customization

Sony’s newest full-frame camera is equipped with a variety of enhanced capabilities that were first implemented in the ?9 and then again in the ?7R III. These include dual media slots, with support in one slot for UHS-II type SD memory cards. Users have a variety of options for storing their content in each of the cards, including separate JPEG / RAW recording, separate still image / movie recording, relay recording and more. Battery life has been greatly extended as well – with a CIPA measurement of up to 710 shots per chargeviii, it offers the world’s longestvii battery life of any Mirrorless camera, as the new camera utilizes Sony’s Z series battery NP-FZ100 that have approximately 2.2 times the capacity of the W series battery NP-FW50 utilized in the ?7 II.

The new camera features “My Menu” functionality which allows up to 30 menu items to be registered for instant recall when needed. Users can also apply star ratings to their still images through the camera controls for easier image playback and review, and edit the first three characters of all still image files. Additionally, there is a total of 81 functions that are assignable to 11 custom buttons, and the camera is both dust and moisture resistant.[xv]

The ?7 III features high-resolution, high-contrast, fast-start XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ with approximately 2.3 million dots for extremely accurate, true-to-life detail reproduction. “Standard” or “High” display quality settings are also available for both the viewfinder and monitor as well. It also is capable of seamlessly transferring files to a smartphone, tablet, computer or FTP server via Wi-Fi®, while also offering a SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.1 Gen 1) USB Type-C™ Terminal for increased flexibility in power supply and faster image transfer speed during tethered shooting.

The ?7 III model also comes with Sony’s new software suite “Imaging Edge”, which extends the creative capabilities of the entire shooting process – from pre-processing to post-processing. “Imaging Edge” provides three PC applications called ‘Remote’, ‘Viewer’ and ‘Edit’, available for free download, which support live-view PC remote shooting and RAW development. In the latest Version 1.1, several improvements have been implemented including about 10%[xvi] faster data transfer speed for remote shooting from PC (PC tether shooting) and about 65%[xvii] improvement in the response speed for RAW image editing. Canon announces EOS M50 with 24MP sensor, 4K video and built-in EVF

Canon has taken the wraps off the EOS M50, a beginner-friendly mirrorless camera that’s the first in the company’s M-series to offer 4K video capture. It uses a 24MP APS-C sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus, a new Digic 8 processor and unlike its M100 sibling, provides a built-in electronic viewfinder.

First Impressions

The M50 is also the first camera to offer a new CR3 Raw format. It provides a standard “image quality priority” Raw setting as well as a “size priority” C-Raw that produces up to 50% smaller files with the same resolution, albeit with a slight drop in image quality.

Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth are also included, enabling a new option to automatically transfer images from the camera to a smartphone after each shot. The M50’s updated processor makes 1080/120p high frame rate video possible, and UHD 4K recording is available at 24p. Unfortunately, 4K also imposes a significant 1.6x crop and Dual Pixel isn’t available.

The camera’s 2.36 million-dot OLED EVF complements a 1.04 million-dot fully articulated touchscreen. With focus locked the M50 will shoot up to 10 fps; 7.4fps shooting is available in C-AF.

Dual Pixel autofocus provides improved coverage with certain lenses, including the EF-M 55-200mm, EF-M 18-150mm and EF-M 28mm F3.5. With one of these lenses attached, the M50 gives 88% horizontal and 100% vertical sensor coverage and up to 143 AF points. A large number of EF and EF-S lenses will also give the same level of AF coverage, while other M-mount and EF/EF-S lenses will offer up to 99 AF points and 80% horizontal/80% vertical coverage.

The Canon EOS M50 will be available in April for $ 780 body-only. It will also be bundled with an EF-M 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM for $ 900; a kit with 15-45mm and 55-200mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM will cost $ 1250.

Canon’s PowerShot G1 X Mark III is a 24MP APS-C compact with DSLR-like autofocus

Canon has introduced the PowerShot G1 X Mark III – the third and latest model in its premium G1 X-series. The G1 X Mark III borrows its 24MP APS-C sensor, Dual Pixel AF system and DIGIC 7 processor from Canon’s ILCs, such as the EOS 77D and EOS M5, but adds a fixed 24-72mm equivalent F2.8-5.6 zoom and combines them into a relatively compact body weighing just 400g/14oz. In other words, you’re essentially getting a fixed-lens version of the EOS M5 that fits in the palm of your hand.

We’re already familiar with the sensor and the Dual Pixel AF system and as such, we’re hoping for good results from both. The lens has nine elements, three of which are double-sided aspherical, a built-in three-stop neutral density filter and image stabilization with up to four stops of shake reduction.

The Mark III can shoot continuous bursts at up to 9 fps with AF/AE locked on the first shot or 7 fps with continuous AF. The buffer fills up after around 19 Raw or 24 JPEGs, depending on which mode you’re using. Battery life is disappointing, with a CIPA rating of only 200 shots per charge (which assumes you’re using the flash 50% of the time). So, while you’ll usually get more than this number from the camera, you’re still likely to appreciate a second battery or get used to constantly worrying about where your next top-up is coming from.

The Mark III moves away from the blocky design of its predecessors, and now looks nearly identical to its baby brother the PowerShot G5 X, which uses a much smaller 1″-type sensor. The G1 X III has an SLR-style design, featuring dials on the front and back, a built-in flash, an OLED viewfinder and fully articulating LCD. Canon says that the shutter release has been designed in such a way to make it feel similar to a DSLR. The body is sealed against dust and moisture.

Other features include 1080/60p and time-lapse video capture, Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth, and (long overdue in our opinion) a Panoramic Shot Mode.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark III is set to ship in November at $ 1299. Optional accessories include a dedicated lens hood ($ 59), underwater housing ($ 499) and leather case ($ 99).

Fujifilm X-E3 offers 24MP sensor and extensive touch control

Fujifilm has announced the X-E3, sporting a 24.3MP X-Trans sensor and 4K video capture. It updates the X-E2S, which was itself a fairly minor update to the X-E2, so brings a number of welcome upgrades.

The X-E3 borrows much of its hardware from the X-T20, including a 325-point AF system with a handy new AF Area All option that activates various modes as the AF point size is changed. The camera also uses and updated subject tracking algorithm that claims better success tracking smaller and faster objects. Its predecessor’s built-in flash has been omitted, but an EF-X8 accessory flash is included in the box.

Video recording at 4K/30p is offered, taken by the full width of the sensor. Full 1080 HD can be had at up to 60p. The X-E3 continues to offer Wi-Fi, and adds the option for a constant Bluetooth low energy connection to a smartphone.

The X-E2S’s fixed 3″ 1.04M-dot LCD has been upgraded to a (still non-articulated) touchscreen in the X-E3, and a new feature called Touch Function puts additional customizable touch controls at the user’s fingertips. The camera’s rear control panel loses the directional navigation buttons in favor of touch control, but gains an AF joystick.

The Fujifilm X-E3 is expected to arrive in September in three kit configurations: body-only for $ 900, with 18-55mm for $ 1300, or with 23mm F2 R WR for $ 1150.

Exceptional Autofocus Tracking and High-Speed Response
The FUJIFILM X-E3 features a large phase detection autofocus (AF) area and provides photographers with enhanced tracking performance for moving subjects. Equipped with a newly developed image recognition algorithm, the X-E3 is able to track moving subjects half the size, or moving twice as fast as previous models.

The X-E3 supports both Full HD and 4K video recording. Videos can be shot with Film Simulations in-camera to easily produce creative high-resolution footage.

The compact and lightweight X-E3 is perfect for quick snapshots, boasting high-speed response times including a start-up time of just 0.4 seconds, shooting interval of 0.25 seconds, shutter time lag of 0.05 seconds and autofocus speed as fast as 0.06 seconds.

Enhanced Connectivity and Intuitive Touchscreen Control
The X-E3 is the first X Series model to feature Bluetooth® low energy wireless communication. Providing photographers with enhanced connectivity, this feature offers the ability to pair the camera with a smartphone or tablet for easy transfer of pictures via the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote application.

The X-E3 features a high-resolution 3.0 inch 1.04M-dot static touchscreen LCD monitor to provide users with easy, intuitive operations in a variety of shooting and playback modes. When shooting with the X-E3, the touchscreen can be used to select the focus area, or focus on a specific point before taking a picture. For playback, users can enjoy the ability to swipe or scroll through images, double-tap to enlarge, drag an image once enlarged, along with pinch-out and pinch-in sizing. Ultra-Compact and Lightweight Body for Portability and Practicality
Making it the perfect companion for everyday shooting and travel photography, the new FUJIFILM X-E3 is the most compact and lightweight model with a viewfinder within the X Series interchangeable lens camera range. The X-E3 also features a Focus Lever positioned on the rear side of the camera that allows photographers to use joystick-type operations in eight directions to easily select a focus area.

The top plate features two precision-milled aluminum dials, giving the camera a premium feel and allowing users to easily adjust the shutter speed and exposure compensation while maintaining focus on taking a picture. The Exposure Compensation Dial now has the C position for exposure compensation up to ±5 stops. Updated X Mount Lens Roadmap Unveiled

New Firmware Updates Coming Soon

Canon launches EOS M100 with 24MP sensor and Dual Pixel AF

Canon has announced the successor to its EOS M10 with the EOS M100, bringing a 24.2MP sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus to the entry-level mirrorless range for the first time. A DIGIC 7 processor brings other improvements like a boost from 1080/30p to 1080/60p video capture and 4 fps burst shooting with continuous AF (6 fps with single AF) compared to the M10’s 2.2 fps with C-AF.

The Canon EOS M100 maintains its predecessor’s built-in Wi-Fi with NFC, tilting 3″ 1.03M-dot touchscreen, and pop-up flash. Bluetooth connectivity is also available, allowing for a constant connection between camera and mobile device.
