NiSi Optics’ new 150mm Explorer Collection ND filters claim to be twice as durable as other filters

06 Jun

NiSi Optics USA has launched its new 150mm Explorer Collection of square neutral density (ND) filters, which it claims are twice as strong as other glass filters on the market thanks to a ‘special glass hardening process.’

The 150mm Explorer Collection is identical to its 100mm predecessor in all but size and work with any of NiSi Optics USA’s S5 and Q system 150mm filter holders. Like the 100mm options, the 150mm Explorer Collection is made from B270 tempered glass and includes the following 2mm-thick filters: 10-stop ND1000, 6-stop ND64, 3-stop ND8, 3-stop ND8 Medium Graduated ND and 2-stop ND4 Reverse Graduated ND.

What sets the Explorer Collection apart from other glass filters on the market is their durability. NiSi Optics USA says it treats the filters via a ‘special glass hardening process’ that doubles the strength of the glass with ‘no visible loss of image quality.’ While that sounds like quite the claim, the above video appears to back up the claims.

Each of the five filters in the 150mm Explorer Collection retails for $ 198 and is currently available to purchase through NiSi Optics USA online shop and authorized retailers.

Press release:

NISI 150MM EXPLORER COLLECTION FILTER RANGE

Hardened Glass Filters Now Available for The 150mm System

NiSi Optics USA have just launched the brand new 150mm Explorer Collection of neutral density filters which are compatible with all of our 150mm filter holder systems including very popular S5 filter holders and Q filter holders.?

The new range of 150mm Explorer Collection filters include the 10 Stop ND1000, 6 Stop ND64, 3 Stop ND8, 3 Stop ND8 Medium Graduated ND and 2 Stop ND4 Reverse Graduated ND. The Explorer Collection range of filters can be used in combination with the 150mm optical glass range of neutral density filters. Each filter in the NiSi 150mm Explorer Collection is priced at USD$ 198.?

When it comes to durability, the NiSi Explorer Collection filters are stronger thanks to the special glass hardening process that makes them up to double the strength of typical glass filter. For photographers shooting in more adventurous situations and harsher landscapes, the Explorer Collection filters may be the better choice when compared to our optical glass filters as they offer increased durability that will provide a great investment over time.

While using the NiSi Explorer Collection filter range, there is no visible loss of image quality when compared to the NiSi range of optical glass filters. The proprietary manufacturing methods used by NiSi ensure there will be no impact on visible image quality when using the tempered glass within the NiSi Explorer Collection series of filters.

Irix 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 lens preorders arrive ahead of December release

07 Nov

IRIX has launched its 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 full-frame DSLR lens for preorder. The model measures 8.7 x 13.5cm / 3.4 x 5.3in, weighs 840g / 29.6oz, and features 12 elements in 9 groups, a 0.345m minimum focusing distance, 77mm filter size, focus lock, a detachable Arca Swiss lens collar, and a detachable lens hood.

The 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 lens includes a Neutrino coating to minimize ghosting and light flares resulting in improved color fidelity and contrast. IRIX used its Dragonfly finish for weather sealing against moisture and dust. As stated in late September when the lens was announced, IRIX claims its new lens has nearly zero distortion at 0.1-percent.

The new 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 lens is offered in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Pentax K mount options, each priced at $ 595 USD. The model can now be preordered from B&H Photo, where the shipment start date is listed as December 26, 2018.

IRIX announces 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1 lens with near-zero distortion

24 Sep

IRIX has announced a new full-frame telephoto macro lens, the 150mm F2.8 Macro 1:1.

The 1:1 reproduction lens will be available for Nikon F, Canon EF and Pentax K mounts and claims to have ‘close to zero distortion,’ according to IRIX — just 0.1 percent, thanks to the optical construction consisting of twelve elements in nine groups.

IRIX touts the telephoto focal length as a benefit noting ‘the possibility of being able to move away from the photographed object […] makes the operation more convenient than using lenses with a shorter focal length. No shadows are cast on the object and it is also possible to use lamps dedicated to this type of photography.’ Its internal focusing mechanism means the lens won’t shrink or expand when focusing.

The lens features select weather-sealing at various areas on the lens and has a rubberized focus grip with 270-degrees of rotation. There’s also Focus Lock and a removable Arca Swiss lens collar for easy shooting on a tripod.

The construction of the lens features IRIX’s new ‘Dragonfly finish.’ In Irix’s own words, ‘the aluminium frame has been enclosed in an external structure made of aluminium-magnesium alloys and composite elements. The combination of Firefly and Blackstone features gave the lens lightness and solidity while maintaining high mechanical strength and resistance in difficult weather conditions.’

Pricing and availability is yet to be determined.

Photokina 2016: Hands-on with Phase One 45mm F3.5 and 150mm F2.8 ‘Blue Ring’ lenses

Hands-on with Phase One 45mm F3.5 and 150mm F2.8

Phase One is showing off two new ‘Blue Ring’ lenses at this year’s Photokina tradeshow in Cologne, Germany. We visited the Phase One booth earlier and got our hands on them.

First up is the new 150mm LS F2.8 IF, which offers a focal length equivalent to 64mm on full-frame, making it a useful portrait prime. At first glance this is an enormous lens, but a lot of its apparent size is actually the detachable hood.

Hands-on with Phase One 45mm F3.5 and 150mm F2.8

F2.8 is fast for a medium-format lens, which should ensure nice shallow depth of field when used wide-open for portraits. Here’s a view straight down the front of the lens. See what we mean about that big hood?

Hands-on with Phase One 45mm F3.5 and 150mm F2.8

With the hood removed, the 150mm becomes a good deal smaller. The new lens can synchronize with flash at shutter speeds of up to 1/1000sec and can focus as close as 100cm/3.2ft. It uses 8 elements in 7 groups and accepts 105mm screw-in filters. It could be yours for only $ 6990/€5990.

Next up is the 45mm LS F3.5, which Phase One tells us will offer extremely good edge-to-edge sharpness, even wide-open. Aimed at landscape photographers, the 45mm (and indeed the 150mm) offers a simple auto/manual focus clutch switch. Shifting to manual focus is as easy as pulling the focus ring towards the camera.

Hands-on with Phase One 45mm F3.5 and 150mm F2.8

Like the 150mm, the 45mm features a leaf shutter inside the lens itself, and it can synchronize with flash at shutter speeds of up to 1/1600sec. Construction comprises 10 elements in 7 groups.

Hands-on with Phase One 45mm F3.5 and 150mm F2.8

Equivalent to a 28mm field of view on full-frame, the new 45mm F3.5 has a closest focusing distance of 55cm/1.8ft. It is available now for $ 5990/€5290.

Hands-on with Phase One 45mm F3.5 and 150mm F2.8

This is Lau Norgaard, VP of R&D at Phase One. He’s pretty pleased with his new lenses – what do you think? Let us know in the comments.
