Nikon Z-mount 1.4x and 2x teleconverters arrive in August

Nikon has announced that it will add two teleconverters to its mirrorless Z-series lineup this summer: the Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x. Both are weather-sealed, with fluorine coatings on front and rear elements to resist smudges, and retain autofocus capabilities with all AF points up to F11. The teleconverters will be compatible with ‘select’ Nikkor Z lenses, including the 70-200mm F2.8 VR S. It’s likely (but unconfirmed) that they’ll also work with the 100-400 and 200-600mm tele-zoom lenses currently on the Z-mount roadmap that should be released next year.

Both teleconverters are compact designs with a protruding front element meaning that, like recent F-mount equivalents, they cannot be ‘stacked’ or combined.

The 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters will sell for $ 550 and $ 600, respectively, and will go on sale in late August. They will be sold alongside the previously-announced but delayed Z 70-200mm F2.8 S, which is expected to become available in the same timeframe.

Canon introduces RF 600mm and 800mm F11 IS STM lenses, 1.4x and 2x teleconverters

Canon has announced a pair of super-telephoto fixed-aperture lenses: the RF 600mm F11 IS STM and RF 800mm F11 IS STM.

The use of gapless dual-layer diffractive optics and fixed apertures of F11 allowed Canon to reduce the size and length of the lenses compared to their EF equivalents. Canon also says the design of the DO elements also allows for much lower pricing than would otherwise be possible. Both lenses are collapsable, which reduces their stowed length by around 25%. Neither is weather-sealed.

The image stabilization on the lenses reduces shake by five stops on the 600mm and four stops on the 800mm. Canon does not claim any additional image stabilization advantage when using the IBIS systems in the newly launched EOS R5 and R6. Both lenses use stepping motors to drive their focus groups, so focus is unlikely to match the speeds and silence of the company’s lenses using Nano USM motors. When attached to the R5 and R6, AF coverage area is 60% x 40% (W x H).

The RF 1.4x and 2x will give the 600mm F11 and 800mm F11 even more reach

Canon has also introduced a pair of teleconverters alongside the RF lenses released today. The RF 1.4x and 2x will give the 600mm F11 and 800mm F11 even more reach. With the 2x teleconverter attached, the 800mm F11 becomes a 1600mm F22 – and yes, the R5 and R6 can maintain autofocus at that aperture.

The teleconverters are also compatible with the just-announced 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L. Note, however, that the 100-500mm must be set to 300mm or longer before the teleconverter can be attached, so the lens becomes either an effective 420-700mm or a 600-1000mm, depending on which converter you’re using.

The 600mm, 800mm and both converters will be available later this month. The 600mm is priced at $ 699, while the 800mm comes in at $ 899. The 1.4x and 2x converters will sell for $ 499 and $ 599, respectively.

The EOS R5 is a camera designed for professional applications featuring a new 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and uncropped 8K video recording up to 29.97 fps. The EOS R6 is geared towards advanced amateurs featuring a 20.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and 4K video recording up to 59.94 fps. Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6
Both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras have the ability to capture the action of a variety of fast-moving subjects with impressive accuracy and speed. When using the mechanical shutter, each can shoot up to 12 fps and up to 20 fps when using the completely silent shutter. Both cameras are the first to be outfitted with Canon’s advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II which utilizes up to approximately100 percent coverage of the AF area and EOS iTR AF X incorporating AF tracking algorithms using deep learning technology and enhanced readout speed of the CMOS sensor and processing speed thanks to the DIGIC X image processor. The 1,053 automatically selected AF Zones are made even more potent by the ability to detect the human eye, face or head as well as the eye, face or body of animals such as dogs, cats and even birds. Adding to the feature set is the 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilizer, having coordinated control with Optical Image Stabilizer in IS equipped RF lenses. This provides up to 8 stops of shake correction, a feature that many creators have long asked for from Canon. Both the EOS R5 and R6 cameras come with a new LP-E6NH battery with a higher capacity than the previous model.

As the new flagship model in the EOS R series lineup, the EOS R5 camera has features that pack a punch for a variety of users who create both still and video content. It has a powerful 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and is driven by the speedy DIGIC X image processor, giving wide dynamic range as well as boasting an ISO range of 100-51,200 that is expandable up to 102,400. In a camera full of eye-popping features, one that really stands out is the ability to record uncropped 8K RAW internal video recording up to 29.97 fps and 8K internal video recording up to 29.97 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). The camera can also record 4K internal video recording up to 119.88 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). External recording in 4K is also available up to 59.94 fps. When in DCI modes, the 8K and 4K video recording is uncropped and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II is available in all 8K and 4K recording modes. Additional features of the EOS R5 camera include:

The EOS R6 camera is well-equipped with a host of new features to push the limits of creativity for imaging enthusiasts. The combination of the EOS-1D X Mark III based 20.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and the DIGIC X image processor produces an ISO range of 100-102,400 and is expandable to 204,800. Internal video recording at 4K is capable up to 59.94 fps or 1080p up to 119.88 fps in 10 bit 4:2:2 Canon Log(H.265) or HDR PQ(H.265). The camera also features a built-in 0.5-inch OLED EVF with approximately 3.69 million dots and a 119.88 fps refresh ratevi. Additional features of the EOS R6 camera include:

Battery Accessory
The optional BG-R10 battery grip accessory will be available for both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras. The BG-R10 accommodates up to two batteries and is compatible with the new LP-E6NH, LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries. The convenient BG-R10 grip accessory can also improve handling for users while capturing portrait photography.

Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM
The Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is a high-performance and versatile super-telephoto zoom lens that will find its way into the bags of many photographers. The compact and lightweight lens features optical image stabilization of up to five stops* of shake correction with three different IS modes, including standard, panning and during exposure only. Two Nano USM motors are at the heart of this lens and provide users with high-speed, smooth and quiet auto focus with a minimum focusing distance of three feet. Additional features of the Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM include:

  • Rotation-Type zoom ring and torque adjustment allows for precision control and feel

Canon RF600mm and 800mm F11 IS STM
The Canon RF600mm and RF800mm F11 IS STM lenses are the first fixed focal length super-telephoto RF lenses and are incredibly compact and lightweight. The portability of the new lenses is made even greater due to the ability for the lens barrel to retract and lock in place when the lenses are stowed away and not in use. Diffractive Optics technology helps to reduce the necessary number of lenses and greatly diminish the cost of the lenses, making them affordable for a broader group of photographers. Additional features of the Canon RF600mm and RF800mm F11 IS STM lenses include:

  • Lightweight – the RF600mm weighs approximately 2.05lb and the RF800mm weighs approximately 2.78lb, respectively

1.4x and 2x teleconverters on the way for Panasonic S-series

Two teleconverters will be making their way into Panasonic’s full-frame S-system this July. The 1.4x and 2x teleconverters will be compatible with the current S Pro 70-200mm F4 OIS, as well as the 70-200mm F2.8 arriving later this year. The 1.4x converter will give each lens approximately a 100-280mm range, and the 2x converter will likewise extend the zoom range to 140-400mm.

The 1.4x converter comprises 7 lenses in 4 groups, and includes 2 Ultra High Refractive Index Lenses (UHR). The 2x converter is composed of 8 lenses (2 UHR) in 4 groups. Both teleconverters are dust and splash-resistant, and will go on sale in July, priced at $ 499 and $ 599, respectively.

Panasonic Announces New Teleconverters for LUMIX S Series Telephoto Zoom Lenses

Fujifilm releases 1.4x teleconverter and macro extension tubes for GF system

Fujifilm is set to ship three new lens accessories for its medium format GF system.

First is the GF 1.4X TC WR teleconverter, which is designed for the 250mm F4 R LM OIS WR lens also announced today. It boosts the 35mm equiv. focal range of that lens to 277mm, though the aperture increases by a stop. The teleconverter is weather-sealed and weighs in at 400g. It will be available in May for $ 849.95 USD / $ 1059.99 CAD.

Next are a pair of macro extension tubes, which increase the magnification ratio of any of Fujifilm’s GF lens. The MCEX-18G WR is 18mm long while the MCEX-45G WR is 45mm. Both are weather-sealed and are priced at $ 329.99 USD / $ 409.99 CAD.

Tamron announces new 1.4X and 2X teleconverters

Tamron has announced two new teleconverters, designed to be used with select telephoto Tamron lenses, starting with the company’s new SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 Di VC USD G2. The 1.4X and 2X converters are moisture and dust-resistant, and turn the 150-600mm into a 210-600mm or 300-1200mm equivalent zoom, respectively. Both teleconverters use Tamron’s BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings to reduce ghosting and flare, and the 2X converter uses a low-dispersion element to suppress aberrations.

The 1.4X and 2X converters will cost $ 419 and $ 439 respectively. They’ll be available in Canon and Nikon mounts starting September 23rd in Japan, with availability in the US soon after.

1. Increases maximum focal length
Although the maximum focal length is increased, the minimum object distance remains nearly the same, so the magnification ratio during close focusing is enhanced. Both teleconverters are carefully designed and constructed to preserve the original superior image quality of the lens. The 2.0x model uses one LD (Low Dispersion) lens element to suppress aberrations. BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings are deployed on both models to help minimize ghosting and flare.

2. Autofocus and VC features are retained with compatible lenses
Autofocus functions normally with compatible lenses (please refer to Compatible Tamron Lens List below). VC (Vibration Compensation) performance is maintained.

3. Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction
The new teleconverters are ideal for use in outdoor photography when matched with any lens that has a Moisture-Resistant Construction because special seals that are dust-resistant and moisture-proof are used at every joint and seam.

4. Sturdy, durable barrel design
The barrel frame of the teleconverters are made of die cast aluminum, except for some parts of the exterior finish, to maintain extra strength when used with large lenses. The design utilizes a bayonet mount made of brass on the camera side and stainless steel on the lens side to ensure excellent durability even with repeated mountings and detachments.

Fujifilm brings weather-sealed 35mm F2 lens, 1.4x teleconverter to X-mount

Fujifilm has added another lens to its X-mount, this one being a low-cost Fujinon XF 35mm F2 prime. This compact lens features a nearly silent internal AF system, 9-blade circular aperture, 2 ED elements, and is sealed against moisture and dust. Also announced is a 1.4x teleconverter, which is currently only compatible with the XF 50-140mm F2.8 zoom. It will, however, be compatible with future lenses, including the XF 100-400mm super telephoto lens expected next year. Nikon announces updated 400mm F2.8 telephoto and 1.4x teleconverter

Nikon has announced updated versions of its 400mm F2.8 telephoto lens and 1.4x teleconverter. The AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR promises improved autofocus, exposure accuracy and speed, while being 816g (nearly 2lb) lighter than its predecessor. Meanwhile the AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III  features revised optics, and a redesigned barrel for increased moisture and dust resistance. Fujifilm announces 1.4x teleconverter for X100/X100S

Fujifilm has formally announced the TCL-X100, a 1.4x teleconverter for the X100 and X100S that was first shown at CP+ back in February. The converter brings the focal length up to 33mm (50mm equiv.) and features an HT-EBC coating to reduce flare. Owners of the X100 and X100S will need to update their firmware in order to take advantage of the TCL-X100. The teleconverter will be available this May in your choice of black or silver for a price to be announced later.
