Charles Quiles is an American photographer & director from Puerto Rico. He divides his time between New York and Stockholm. Over the past 11 years, Charles has worked alongside some of the most recognizable celebrities and brands today, including: Lady Gaga, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Ricky Martin, Antonio Banderas, Rajiv Surendra (AKA Kevin G), Chris Crocker, Henry Holland, David Barton Gym, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, DOHC, Custo Barcelona, Mugler, Balmain, and Dolce & Gabbana.
He has had clients such as NY Magazine, Viacom, LOGO, LASH Magazine, Vogue Russia, Vogue Turkey, BULLETT Magazine, FIASCO Magazine, DSECTION Magazine, Collezioni Uomo and Creem Magazine and appeared on major television networks, including VH1 and MTV. Charles has an interest in humanitarian work and is currently the Creative Advisor for a non-profit, Care For Africa, leading their NYC office in 2014, with a book on its way to be released in 2015.
Charles incorporates his dark past and sensual personality into his work. His photographic style ranges from editorial to characteristic portraiture, all speaking from a personal truth. He is inspired by life experiences, personalities, and style and takes pride in having a hands-on approach in creative direction and constructing on the projects he takes on.
ArtNowNY is proud to present his latest project to the public – Charles Quiles’ first ever solo exhibition, entitled, Fais-Mois L’Amour, which translates to “Make Love to Me”. The exhibition consists of over 20 photographs and one new video installation chosen from his body of work within the fashion industry and his personal artistic projects, serving as a reflection of the noted photographer’s experiences over past 11 years – an intimate diary of the artist’s work.
For those of you who don’t know, ArtNowNY is a hub of creative genius in New York City, working with both established and emerging artists of different styles, disciplines and backgrounds. It creates an open forum between artists, community and collectors. Encouraging new opportunities for artists as well as creating dialogue between the artist and the collector, new and experienced alike, while educating the community in local and global artistic movements.
FaisMois L’Amour is an exhibition that is deeply personal. The video installation, first displayed to the public in this show, bares his acknowledgement and acceptance of a relationship ending. Almost half of the photos selected expose the inner life of the artist, featuring people who have influenced his journey, such as close friends, lovers and mentors like the photography legend, Mariano Vivanco, that have shaped the path to being an up-and-coming fashion photographer from Puerto Rico.
Displayed alongside the photos of loved ones are the faces of models and famous notables, such as Rajiv Surendra, the former Kendra Spears, Princess Salwa Aga Khan and Alejandro Salgueiro, who Quiles has worked with in his editorial work.Quiles’ photographs address the themes of beauty and sex appeal, reminiscent of his style, and uses the faces that enshroud the urban contemporary society, whilst paying homage to the pioneers of the genre, like Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts.
FaisMois L’Amour showcases the spans of intimacies in our own lives, ranging from the platonic to the carnal – a love letter to the flesh, muscles and memories that embody Quiles’ passion to his craft. Over a decade in the making, the final product is an exhibition that presents depicts the efforts of a young man’s ambition to capture moments, with full pride and in all its glory.
