Samsung’s new Galaxy Flip 3, Galaxy Fold 3 promise better performance, durability and more

Samsung has announced a pair of new foldable smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Fold 3. The Flip 3 is a clamshell design, harkening back to a classic flip phone design. The Flip 3 is compact when not in use and gets taller when you flip it open. The Fold 3, on the other hand, has a more typical smartphone footprint, and then it unfolds like a book to offer a massive display. Let’s look at each of Samsung’s new folding phones in turn.

Samsung Z Galaxy Flip 3

When folded, the Flip 3 is 106.7mm (4.2″) diagonally. It’s nearly square and has rounded corners. It’s sleek. It’s also more usable than the prior iteration, thanks to a much larger cover screen. The cover screen is just under 50mm (1.9″) diagonally, although the viewable area is slightly less due to its rounded corners. The Super AMOLED display has a 260 x 512 resolution. It’s not a large display, but it’s large enough to allow users to see and interact with notifications and preview images taken with the dual rear camera.

Speaking of selfies, due to the phone’s flip design, you can use what Samsung calls ‘flex mode’ to set up the phone, partially folded, to capture hands-free selfies. The dual rear cameras are both 12MP. The standard main camera has an F1.8 lens, includes optical image stabilization and can record HDR10+ video. The front camera is 10MP.

The main screen, which is usable when you flip the phone open, is a 6.7″ dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 2640 x 1080 resolution. The display has a 120 Hz refresh rate.

Samsung Galaxy Flip 3

The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Octa-core processor paired with 8GB of memory. The phone is available with 128GB or 256GB of storage. Unlike the Fold 3, the Flip 3 is not compatible with Samsung’s S Pen.

Samsung promises that durability issues that have plagued earlier Samsung foldables have been rectified. The Flip 3 features more durable materials. Samsung writes that its new Galaxy Z Flip 3 is built using its strongest aluminum frame yet and that the phone’s front and back covers feature Samsung’s toughest Galaxy Z glass. The Flip 3 is also the world’s first water-resistant foldable smartphone and includes an IPX8 rating, meaning it can survive in 1.5m of freshwater for up to 30 minutes.

The Galaxy Flip 3 is Samsung’s first foldable phone to start at under $ 1,000, with a $ 999.99 list price. The phone Z Flip 3 is available in phantom black, green, lavender, cream, gray, white and pink colorways and will begin shipping on August 27.

The Galaxy Fold 3 has a more typical smartphone form factor…and then you open it up. When opened, the Fold 3 has a 7.6″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 2208 x 1768 resolution. The display has a 120 Hz refresh rate. The cover screen is large, too, at 6.2″ with a resolution of 862 x 2268. By the way, unlike prior models, the cover screen is also 120 Hz.

While the display is the star of the show, there’s quite a lot going on inside. The Fold 3 has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Octa-core processor as the Flip 3, although paired with 12GB of memory instead of 8GB. The Fold 3 also has a larger 512GB storage option in addition to the standard 256GB. Further, the Fold 3 is compatible with the Samsung S Pen.

The Fold 3 is compatible with the S Pen due to Samsung using an 80% stronger protective film on the folding display. The cover screen is stronger, too, using Gorilla Glass Victus now for improved drop protection. Speaking of durability, the Fold 3 has IPX8 water resistance, like the Flip 3, and like Samsung’s other new folding phone, the Fold 3 includes better aluminum materials.

Looking at cameras, both of Samsung’s new folding phones include a pair of 12MP wide (the main camera) and ultra wide cameras. The Fold 3 also adds a 12MP telephoto camera with an F2.4 lens. This is the same basic camera setup as in the Fold 2, but the new phone’s tele lens has optical image stabilization. There’s also a camera under the display. It’s only 4MP, but it should work well for video calls and meetings. In their hands-on, The Verge says the pixels on top of the camera are noticeable.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is available for preorder now in three colors, black, green and silver. The device starts at $ 1,800 and will ship on August 27.

Samsung’s new 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD offers read speeds up to 7,000MB/s

Samsung has unveiled the 980 Pro, its newest high-end NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 drive, which pushes read and write speeds to ridiculous speeds.

The drive will come in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities at launch and features a PCIe 4.0 interface that, with a compatible motherboard, will offer maximum sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,000MB/s and 5,000MB/s, respectively. Even if you don’t have a PCIe 4.0 motherboard on hand (there aren’t a lot available at this time, as the interface is relatively new), the new 980 Pros can still reach maximum sequential read and write speeds of 3,500MB/s and 3,450MB/s, respectively on an M.2 PCIe 3.0 motherboard.

As tends to be the case with SSDs, the smaller capacity drives will feature slightly slower write speeds (read speeds are the same across capacities). While the 1TB version will top out at sequential write speeds of up to 3,450MB/s via PCIe 3.0, the 500GB and 250GB models will top out at 3,400MB/s and 2,700MB/s, respectively. As noted by The Verge, How-to Geek suggests the slower write speeds may be caused by there being fewer NAND channels in smaller SSDs.

While PCIe 4.0 motherboards aren’t exactly commonplace at this time, it’s nice to see a future-proof SSD that will still improve speeds on the more common PCIe 3.0 interface.

The three capacities will start shipping this month with the 250GB, 500GB and 1TB models retailing for $ 90, $ 150 and $ 230, respectively. There will also be a 2TB version out before the end of the year, but no price has been shared at this time.

Samsung’s new ISOCELL GN1 sensor features Tetracell tech, phase detection on all active pixels

Samsung Electronics has launched a new image sensor that is designed for use in the primary camera of high-end smartphones. Like other sensors from the the ISOCELL family, the ISOCELL GN1 comes with the company’s pixel isolation technology that creates a barrier around each pixel in order to reduce color cross-talk.

At 50MP the sensor´s native resolution is fairly moderate when compared to the 108MP juggernaut used in Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but has other tricks up its sleeve: it’s Samsung’s first image sensor to combine Dual-Pixel autofocus with the company’s Tetracell technology, allowing for increased light sensitivity in low light as well as precise and fast autofocus performance in all light conditions.

The GN1 comes with 100 million phase detection autofocus (PDAF) sites, meaning all of the sensor’s active pixels double as focus pixels, allowing for fast focusing in all light conditions and at all angles. Dual Pixel technology places two photodiodes side-by-side within a single pixel. When an image is captured the outputs from the two photodiodes are merged into a single pixel. Samsung also offers a software feature that can analyze light information from both photodiodes to compute image output that is comparable to a 100MP file.

Tetracell uses pixel-merging methods to increase light sensitivity in low light conditions. Four adjacent pixels are merged into one doubling the effective pixel size from 1.2?m to 2.4?m and quadrupling the light sensitivity at a 12.5MP output size. In bright light the sensor can operate as a standard Bayer sensor and capture full-sized 50MP images.

In addition the GN1 sensor offers a Smart-ISO function that ‘intelligently sets the optimal ISO value, and a real-time HDR mode. Electronic image stabilization uses data from the device’s built-in gyro to avoid shaky video and blurry images and video shooters can make use of an 8K video mode that can record at 30 frames per second.

Overall the GN1 looks like a very versatile image sensor that can adapt to a multitude of shooting situations. In bright light the 50MP resolution should allow for excellent detail. In dimmer conditions the Tetracell tech can deliver images with low noise and a wide dynamic range. At the same time the all-sensor Dual-Pixel autofocus system is making sure subjects are in focus, even in difficult scenes.

Samsung says mass production of the ISOCELL GN1 sensor has started this month. We’ll find out how it performs in real-life conditions once the first GN1-equipped devices make an appearance in the marketplace.

Xiaomi teases Mi Note 10 penta-camera smartphone with Samsung’s new 108MP sensor

Xiaomi has officially teased its new Mi Note 10, an upcoming handset, first teased in early August, that packs Samsung’s 108MP camera sensor inside.

The Mi Note 10 is the first smartphone to offer a ‘penta camera,’ according to Xiaomi, which has also included a 12MP portrait camera and 5MP 50x zoom camera in the same module. The model also features two other cameras on the phone’s rear that are isolated from the other three sensors: a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a tiny 2MP macro camera.

Xiaomi published an image (above) of the Mi Note 10 and its five cameras on Twitter this week, teasing the handset that will be detailed at an event later this month. The company has shared a couple of sample images captured with the 108MP camera on its Twitter account, as well:

Xiaomi also tweeted a brief video clip, indicating that it demonstrates the 5MP 50x zoom camera’s capabilities:

A pair of dual-LED flash modules are expected to accompany the five cameras. GMS Arena notes that the Mi Note 10 is a global version of the China-only Mi CC9 Pro model set to launch on November 5, which packs optical image stabilization for two of the cameras, as well as a 32MP front-facing selfie camera.

Other official details about the handset are lacking at this time, but based on a previous leak, the Mi Note 10 may feature a 6.47in Full HD+ OLED display. Xiaomi will fully detail the CC9 Pro variant on November 5 and the Mi Note 10 will be fully introduced on November 14.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 #SpaceSelfie satellite left hanging from tree on Michigan farm

Samsung’s campaign to promote its new Galaxy S10 5G smartphone came down to Earth with a crash this week when the high-altitude weather balloon central to the #SpaceSelfie promotion dropped out of the sky and was left dangling from a tree in Michigan.

The company had set up a microsite that allowed fans to post their selfies to a Galaxy S10 5G floating at the edge of the atmosphere. A picture of the phone displaying the selfie, overlaid on a real-time view of the Earth, would then be sent back to the sender for them to post on social media using the #SpaceSelfie hashtag. According to Samsung however, ‘weather conditions’ forced the balloon supporting the camera to drop back to Earth a little earlier than intended, where it ended up caught in a tree on a farm in Gratiot County, Michigan.

The Gratiot Country Herald reports that Nancy Welke heard a crash at around 8:45am, just as she and her husband were about to go outside to check on their horses. Upon going out to investigate they discovered the remains of the solar-powered apparatus in their field, with a parachute tangled in the branches of a tree. The balloon, which when inflated was half the size of a basketball court, was found a little further away caught in overhead power lines.

The Space Selfie campaign was launched on October 23 and was designed to demonstrate that the Galaxy S10 5G is so ruggedness it can be sent into space (almost). The balloon was sent to 65,000 feet above the Earth and actress and model Cara Delevingne was the first to ping a picture and have her face on the screen of the phone in ‘space’.

Of her 44 million Instagram followers 5m watched Delevingne’s teaser video of a spaceman delivering her phone, and at the time of writing 267,698 people had liked the resultant picture. The campaign was supposed to run to the end of this month, but on the loss of the critical device to make it all happen the Samsung/Spaceselfie microsite is now down too.

The #SpaceSelfie still managed to attract well over 6000 images on Instagram, though not all the pictures that appear under the hashtag are strictly related. According to Marketing Dive, the agency that ran the campaign for Samsung, the system used a combination of human and automated moderation to ensure no inappropriate images got through, though inevitably there are some random shots of a cup of coffee in the mix.

Report: Samsung’s upcoming Note 10 will have a ‘3-stage variable aperture’

Samsung guru and leaker Ice Universe claims Samsung China engineers have said the camera inside the upcoming Samsung Note 10 smartphone will feature a ‘three-stage variable aperture.’

As noted in the above tweet, Ice Universe says the camera on the Note 10 will offer three specific apertures as options: F1.5, F1.8 and F2.4.

Since the Galaxy S9, Samsung’s flagship lineups have featured dual-aperture camera systems, so it’s not new territory for Samsung. It is interesting though that Samsung is continuing to put an emphasis on the mechanical side of mobile photography when so many others, including Leica, are clearly doubling down on the computational side of it.

It’s unknown how the variable apertures will be implemented in the camera system, but the option alone is an improvement over other manufacturers and so far Samsung’s dual-aperture setup has proven itself.

A sample image from Samsung’s 64MP Quad-Bayer sensor has appeared online

In May, Samsung launched its 64MP Tetracell image sensor for use in smartphone cameras. Like the 48MP Sony equivalent that’s already inside several current flagship devices, the Isocell Bright GW1 is designed to produce full-resolution output in good light conditions and use its Tetracell technology to combine four pixels into one, for better detail, lower noise levels and increased dynamic range, in more challenging circumstances.

Like Sony’s Quad Bayer technology, Tetracell appears to duplicate the Bayer color filter pattern over groups of four pixels at a time, making it easy to combine their data for a lower-resolution, lower-noise image. On a device equipped with the Samsung sensor, this would result in 16MP images vs. 12MP files from the Sony sensor.

Samsung has even come up with the name ‘re-mosaic algorithm’ for the process of reconstructing a full-resolution image in well-lit conditions.

Now we are seeing the first sample image captured with the new Samsung sensor:

According to mobile industry ‘leaker’ Ice Universe, the 64MP sensor will not only be available in Samsung phones. This first sample image was captured by an unreleased Realme device, according to the tweet. Budget smartphone manufacturer Redmi (a sub-brand of Xiaomi) is also interested in the sensor, according to the same Tweet.

A higher-resolution version (4096 x 3072px) of the image has also been shared (h/t eno2). We are looking forward to testing the first production devices with the Samsung Isocell Bright GW1 sensor and comparing its image output against the Sony-equipped high-end rivals.

Samsung’s ISOCELL Plus promises better color accuracy and low light performance

Samsung’s ISOCELL smartphone image sensor technology was introduced in 2013. It uses physical barriers between neighboring pixels to reduce color crosstalk and expand the capability to capture light, compared to conventional backside-illuminated (BSI) image sensors.

Now the Korean company has launched ‘ISOCELL Plus’ which has been developed in cooperation with FujiFilm. It replaces the metal grid at the front of the pixels with a new ‘mystery’ material, providing even better separation between pixels.

This material reduces reflections and light absorption by the barriers between pixels, leading to increased light sensitivity of up to 15% and better color fidelity. According to Samsung the technology allows for the design of sensors with 0.8µm and smaller-sized pixels without a loss in performance. This is 1/3rd the size of the pixels in a typical 1″-type sensor and should allow smartphone sensors with a resolution of 20MP and higher.

“We value our strategic relationship with Samsung and would like to congratulate on the completion of the ISOCELL Plus development,” said Naoto Yanagihara, corporate vice president of Fujifilm. “This development is a remarkable milestone for us as it marks the first commercialization of our new material. Through continuous cooperation with Samsung, we anticipate to bring more meaningful innovation to mobile cameras.”

In combination with other new mobile imaging technologies, such as multi-frame stacking and multi-sensor camera modules, ISOCELL Plus should allow for the design of smartphone cameras with even better low light performance than we’re seeing in current models.

Samsung will be showcasing the new sensors at Mobile World Congress Shanghai come end of June, but for now there is no word on when to expect the new technology in a production smartphone.

Samsung’s PRO Endurance microSD cards can handle 43,800 hours of continuous recording

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a new line of microSDHC/SDXC cards called PRO Endurance. The lineup features 32GB ($ 30), 64GB ($ 50), and 128GB ($ 100) options, each with up to 100MB/s read speeds and 30MB/s write speeds. The South Korean company says the new lineup features “industry-leading endurance” capable of handling up to 43,800 hours of continuous video recording.

Samsung created the PRO Endurance line for video-centric applications, such as security, dash, and body cameras, though they can also be used with drones and other video camera products. In addition to its recording endurance, the PRO Endurance cards are water, temperature, x-ray, and magnetic-proof. Overall, Samsung explains this lineup has 25 times the endurance of its past speed-focused cards.

The PRO Endurance microSDHC/SDXC cards are available from Samsung now.

Samsung’s super fast 970 PRO and EVO NVMe SSDs offer ‘exceptional endurance’

Samsung Electronics has launched the 970 PRO and EVO solid state drives (SSD), aimed at tech enthusiasts and professionals. Thanks to very fast read/write speeds and large capacities they look like interesting options for anyone handling and editing large amounts of image or video data.

The new drives come in the M.2 form factor and with the latest PCIe Gen 3×4 lane interface, offering NVM Express (NVMe) bandwidth. The 970 PRO is capable of sequential read speed of up to 3,500 MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,700 MB/s. The EVO models offers the same read speed but a slightly slower write speed of up to 2,500 MB/s. In terms of write speed that equals a 30 percent improvement over the previous 960 generation.

Samsung has achieved this by implementing its latest V-NAND technology and an upgraded Phoenix controller. Additionally, the 970 EVO Samsung’s TurboWrite technology uses a buffer of up to 78GB to enable even faster write speeds.

That said, the new models aren’t only fast, Samsung also claims they are very reliable. Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard technology protects the drives against overheating through temperature monitoring, and a heat spreader and new nickel-coating on the controller lower temperatures further. Samsung’s warranty covers a 5 year period or up to 1,200 terabytes written.

The 970 EVO will be available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB sizes, the 970 PRO with capacities of 512GB and 1TB. Both drives will be available worldwide starting May 7th, 2018. The Pro model starts at $ 330, while the smallest EVO drive will set you back $ 120.

The sequential write speeds represent an enhancement of up to 30 percent over the previous generation3, thanks to Samsung’s latest V-NAND technology and the newly designed Phoenix controller. The 970 EVO, in particular, utilizes the Intelligent TurboWrite technology, which uses a large buffer size of up to 78GB4 to enable faster write speeds.

In addition to the advancements in performance levels, the 970 PRO and EVO deliver exceptional endurance and reliability. Featuring a five-year warranty5, or up to 1,200 terabytes written6 – 50 percent higher than those provided for the previous generation7 – the 970 PRO and EVO are built to last. The Dynamic Thermal Guard technology safeguards against overheating by automatically monitoring and maintaining optimal operating temperatures, while a heat spreader and new nickel-coated controller further lower the SSD temperatures.

The 970 PRO and EVO also provide greater system design flexibility for the high-performance computing systems. Offering a variety of high capacity options in a compact M.2 form factor – including the single-sided 2TB EVO model – the 970 series enables convenient storage expansion across a wide range of computing devices.

The 970 EVO will be offered in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB8 capacities, and the 970 PRO in 512GB and 1TB capacities.
