Before and After: Weekly Photography Challenge

13 Jul

This week your challenge is to take and/or process an image on the theme of ‘Before and After‘.

the before / after

This idea was submitted by a number of readers on our Facebook page recently and lends itself to you showcasing your post processing skills – but you’re welcome to take a different approach if you’d like and just photograph a ‘before and after’ of some other kind.

It is totally up to you – get your imagination into gear and have some fun with this challenge!

Once you’ve taken your ‘Before and After’ photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSBEFOREANDAFTER to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Once you’ve taken your 50mm photo upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

1To followup on our post earlier today on Low Light Photography we thought it might be a good topic for this weeks challenge.

So – your challenge is to take and share a photo taken in low light.

You’re welcome to take any approach to this that you like. You might want to try shooting some star trails (also check out this post on star trails) or night skies, do some candle light photography, do a night time streetscape or shoot some light trails – really it is totally up to you.

Once you’ve taken your Low Light photo upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSLOWLIGHT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Converging Lines challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

PS: Don’t forget Neil Creek’s Night Photography Course is 31% off this week – it’d be a great way to explore this topic.

Converging Lines: Weekly Photography Challenge

08 Jun

This week we published a tutorial on using converging lines in the composition of your photos so today we thought it might make a good theme for our weekly challenge.

Empty road

So – your challenge is to grab your camera and head out to find some converging lines to shoot – and then to share those photos with us.

You can see some examples of converging lines in shots in the post from earlier in the week but as you get out and about you’re sure to see them all around you – once you start looking you’ll be amazed how many they are.

Once you’ve taken your converging lines photo upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSCONVERGE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Critique Yourself challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

Windows of New York: Weekly Documentary Design Project

05 Jun

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

windows of new york

Fascination bleeds into fixation in this wonderful ongoing series of illustrations by a graphic designer who enjoys the nuances of fenestration in his favorite city.

windows art project

Each piece in the series specifies not only the neighborhood (Hell’s Kitchen, West Village, East Village, Lower East Side, Alphabet City, SOHO, Williamsburg and more) but the actual address so truly curious fans can map out routes to find the source material.

windows graphic design series

From creator Jose Guizar, “The Windows of New York project is a weekly illustrated fix for an obsession that has increasingly grown in me since chance put me in this town. A product of countless steps of journey through the city streets, this is a collection of windows that somehow have caught my restless eye out from the never-ending buzz of the city. This project is part an ode to architecture and part a self-challenge to never stop looking up.”

windows illustrations look up

There is a consistency to the visual language (from shapes to color palette) employed in each piece, which only serves to highlight the surprise differences between the various windows featured. Hacks and modifications make their way into the images as well, from protective metal grating and air conditioners to window-hanging flower boxes and curious cats. Even former windows, now filled in with bricks, or covered by doors, are candidates.

Critique Yourself: Weekly Photography Challenge

04 Jun

This week we published a post by Lynsey Peterson in which she shared 5 of her own images that she feels could have been better.

Look at me

It was a brave move by Lynsey to share that post and got me thinking about the topic of self critique.

My own experience of photography is that going through the process of critiquing your own work to see how you might improve is actually a very valuable process and as a result I’d like to encourage others to do the same as this weeks photography challenge.

Your challenge is to share a photo that you’ve taken recently and share with us how you’d improve it if you could shoot it again.

Would you change the composition, use different gear, pose your subject differently, shoot at a different time of day, use a different approach to lighting…. or something else?

There’s no need to write a long essay critique (although feel free). Just a few points on what you’d do to improve your shot next time is fine.

Once you’ve worked out which shot you want to critique upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSCRITIQUE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Spirit challenge – there were some great shots submitted.
