11 May

ZoeThis week your photographic challenge is to take and share a ‘headshot’ portrait.

You’re welcome to photograph a friend, family member (adult or child), a stranger or even yourself – but we’re looking for something framed around head and shoulders but not much more than that.

There’s no wrong or right way to take a headshot and we’ll suggest some tutorials and resources to check out below – the key is getting your camera out and experimenting!

Also don’t forget that Phil Steele currently is offering dPS readers 30% off his Headshots and Portraits Course.

Kitchens: Weekly Photography Challenge

20 Apr

Easter BreakfastKitchens – we all have one (or at least should have access to something resembling one) – so lets make our kitchens the focus of this weekends photography challenge.

The task is simple – take the best possible shot that you can in your kitchen.

Let your imagination run wild – you might snap a food image of something in your kitchen, you might take a shot out of your kitchen window, you may choose to sit a portrait subject in your kitchen, you could set up a still life shot on your kitchen table, you might try your hand at a self portrait in the kitchen….. anything goes.

Feel free to take a humorous approach, a serious one, or to be as creative as you’d like.

I can’t wait to see what you cook up (sorry)!

Note: We’re looking for ‘new’ shots – this is a challenge rather than a look through your archives for a shot!

Here are a few shots to get your imagination flowing:

Recently we published a post on how to improve your photography of Flowers which may serve as inspiration for those of you in the Northern Hemisphere for this weeks challenge but for those of us down south it could be time to look for some more Autumnal shots (I notice the leaves on the trees in our street this week are turning red).

So whatever the season where you are – grab your camera, head outside and try to capture the essence of what’s happening in Mother Nature in your part of the world right now.

Once you’ve taken your ‘seasonal’ image and have upload it to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to it or – embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

Today we thought it might be fun to make the exercise this weeks photographic challenge as it’s both simple to do and something that has the potential to teach you a lot (and all you really need to do it is a camera and a window (or even a door would do).

Vertigo - a building covered in buildingsThis week your photographic challenge is to shoot and share an image or two on the theme of ‘lines’.

‘Lines’ are all around us – they’re in architecture, they’re in landscapes, they’re in many of the things we use on a day to day basis.

In photography spotting lines and working with them can really help with composition and have a dynamic impact on an image – they’re also really helpful in leading the eye of people through an image. We’ve talked about using lines in composition numerous times in the past – check out these articles before you go shooting:

  • Using Horizontal Lines in Photography
  • Using Vertical Lines in Photography
