Nature: Weekly Photography Challenge

02 Mar

? The Drongo Love ? Happy Valentine's Day ?

Earlier today we published the first of two posts in a series on Wildlife photography so thought this week we might give you an opportunity to practice the tips in it by making our challenge on the topic of ‘Nature’.

It is a little broader than ‘wildlife’ because not every dPS reader is in a position to photograph animals in the coming week but if you’re able to we’d love to see what you can do.

Feel free to photograph any aspect of nature you like. It could be some macro photography of flowers or insects in your back yard, you might want to get out to the beach and do some seascapes or shoot a sunset, you might find yourself drawn to the countryside for some landscapes or you might head to the zoo for some zoo photography!

It is totally up to you.

Once you’ve created your Nature upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it or – embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSNATURE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the images posted in our last challenge – Diptych challenge where there were some great images submitted.

Weather: Weekly Photography Challenge

16 Feb

Twelve Days of Christmas (Day 11) ** EXPLORE No. 1 **Earlier in the week we featured an image set that contained 25 images that all had ‘snow’ as a feature. So today we thought it might be fun to do a ‘weather’ challenge as our weekly theme.

Your challenge is to take and share an image on the theme of weather.

As we have a global audience this should produce images with a real variety of types of weather. Aussie – we want you to show the world what summer is like for you right now. North Americans and Europeans – show us how winter is going?

We want to see rain, hail, snow, sun, storms, wind… you name it – we’d love to see some images that attempt to capture it. Feel free to tackle the topic with what ever type of shot you like, landscape, portrait, colour, black and white… anything you like – be creative!

Looking for inspiration – in addition to the Snow image collection we also have a Rain image collection.

Once you’ve taken and selected your best WEATHER shot upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it or – embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSCUTE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in our last challenge – Cute challenge where there were some beautiful shots submitted.

Natural Light Portraits: Weekly Photography Challenge

26 Jan

This week with the launch of our brand new Portraits eBook I thought it might be fun to run our weekly challenge with a Portrait theme but focus in on portraits that are ‘naturally lit’ – as it is a very accessible theme (all you need is a person… and some daylight).

Natural Light

Hopefully it’ll make a great practice exercise for those of you who picked up the eBook but also be a fun one for those who have not yet grabbed it.

Feel free to be creative with the theme – you might like to shoot shot of someone indoors by a window, to head into the great outdoors, you might like to shoot a headshot, or a full body shot – whatever you like.

Also remember that while you’re shooting with only natural light for this challenge that that doesn’t mean you can’t use some kind of reflector to help light your subject (as in the illustrating picture above by Ed McGowan.

Once you’ve taken and selected your best natural light portrait upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it or – embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSNATLIGHTPORTRAIT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in our last challenge – Best Shot of 2012 challenge where there were some beautiful shots submitted.

To help you with this challenge don’t forget to pick up the new Portraits eBook (do so this week and you get a free 2nd Portraits eBook). You might also like to check out our Natural Light eBook too which will have some relevant tips too.

Landscapes: Weekly Photography Challenge

19 Jan
Landscape-ForegroundPhoto by OneEighteen

This past week we’ve had a few tutorials on Landscape Photography so I thought it might make a good topic for this week’s challenge.

So – your challenge is to take and share a landscape photo.

Feel free to shoot whatever type of landscape image you like (and have available to you). For many of you it might be a snowscape, for others in the southern hemisphere it could be a http://digital-photography-school.com/5-quick-tips-for-coastal-photography“>beachscape, it could be a cityscape or anything else you like.

Also feel free to photograph your landscape in any way/style – black and white, HDR, sunset – it is totally up to you.

Once you’ve taken and selected your best landscape shot upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it or – embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSLANDSCAPE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in our last challenge – Best Shot of 2012 challenge where there were some beautiful shots submitted.

Environmental Portraits: Weekly Photography Challenge

15 Dec

This week your photographic challenge is to take an ‘Environmental Portrait’ (or a portrait that is as much about the surrounds of your subject as it is the subject themselves).

Untitled

The idea came from my post last week – ‘How to Create Portraits that Captivate and Intrigue‘ where I explored the idea of portraits often becoming more interesting when you pay a lot of attention to the background (and foreground) of your portraits and place your subject within an environment that adds to the image.

You might also like to take a look at my previous Introduction to Environmental Portraits tutorial.

"I Am..." An Engineer

The key is to take a great portrait – but instead of going for a background that is not distracting or blurred it out or zooming in to remove it – put that subject in a setting which tells something about your subject.

Perhaps you’d like to photograph someone at work, or a child in their bedroom, or someone in a sporting dressing room preparing for a game…. really it is totally up to you!

Proud X in his bedroom

Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘Environmental Portrait’ image/s that you’d like to share – upload them to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using our embed tool to do so.

Ricky's world

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSENVIRONMENTALPORTRAIT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.
