1 Subject 3 Shots: Weekly Photography Challenge

08 Dec

untitled.jpgThis week your photography challenge is to shoot the one subject in three different ways.

The idea came off the back of our recent post – Make Your Last Shot Your Best Shot – in which Anne McKinnell challenged us to not stop shooting after we get our first good shot but to look for new ways to photograph a scene or subject in the hope of making the followup shots even better than the first.

She showed some great examples (pictured) of how she went beyond the first ‘obvious’ shot in a scene to take some interesting shots from different angles and perspectives.

So here’s the challenge – choose a subject (it could be a portrait, landscape, cityscape, still life, glamour shot…. anything) and aim to take at least 3 different shots of the one subject.

You might like to add variety to your shots by:

  • shooting from a different angle or direction
  • shooting with a different focal length
  • changing up your settings
  • trying a new technique (panning, slow sync shutter etc)
  • changing the composition

Once you’ve taken your shots we’d LOVE to see them so please share 3 or so shots in your series and tell us a little about how you progressed them and changed things up!

Once you’ve taken and selected the ’1 Subject 3 Shots’ images that you’d like to share – upload them to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using our embed tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPS3SHOTS to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – Food challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

Family: Weekly Photography Challenge

24 Nov

This week your challenge is to take and share an image on the theme of ‘family’.

As we approach the end of the year and the holidays that come with it many of use are gathering to celebrate with family – and what better time to get your camera out.

Feel free to interpret the theme in any way that you wish. You might wish to take portrait of a family member – or attempt a family group photo – or photograph your family home – or perhaps be a little more abstract to do something symbolic about what family means to you or even to symbolise a family member who you miss.

Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘Family’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using our embed tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSFAMILY to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Portraits with Props: Weekly Photography Challenge

17 Nov

Szúrópróba

As a followup to our recent post on Adding Interest to your Portraits with Props we thought it might be fun to do one of our weekly challenges on the topic.

So this week your challenge is to take and share a portrait photo that has some kind of ‘prop’. Really it can be any kind of prop (subtle or not) that you like whether it be some element of clothing (a hat, scarf etc), an accessory (sunglasses), having your subject hold something (flowers, balloons, an umbrella) or do something (type on a computer, blow a bubble with gum, ride a bike) or anything else.

Have some fun with it!

Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘Portrait with Props’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using our embed tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSPROP to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – Backyard challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

Backyard: Weekly Photography Challenge

10 Nov

This week your photographic challenge is to take and share a photo from your backyard. If you don’t have a back yard – you’re welcome to substitute your front yard, a local park or some other outdoor garden type area.

The key is to explore an area that may not spring to mind as a great photographic location but which might contain some interesting subjects if you let your mind go there.

As those who follow me on Instagram know – I did this recently in my own yard with my iPhone and ended up attempting some macro photography of some bees buzzing around.

While I’d have had better results with my DSLR the challenge of capturing them with my iPhone was a fun challenge and the results were surprising.

You might like to try photographing insects, flowers or something else with some Macro shots – or perhaps you want to set up a portrait shoot, or shoot some still life objects or do something else. Anything goes.

Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘backyard’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using our embed tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSBACKYARD to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – Favorite Gear challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

Weekly Photo Tips DSLR Matte Box Pro Review…

09 Nov

www.WeeklyPhotoTips.com www.ThePhotographyPodcast.com Though I am not a “video guy” the gentleman who shoots all of the videos for Weekly Photo Tips is. So I asked Mark (who not only shoots all of our videos, he does extensive work on commercials and movies as well) if he would take a look at the Flashpoint DV DSLR Matte Box Pro that Adorama was kind enough to send us. And for those of us who know him, we know he is… well… particular about what he uses, it needs to bring something to his workflow or he doesn’t bother with it, so his gushing review of the Flashpoint DV DSLR Matte Box Pro surprised me, because he just not the gushing kind of a guy. As of the posting of this video this Matte Box is on special for only 0 with free shipping. Head over to the blog and learn more about and for links to where you can get it (with free shipping). See you over there! www.WeeklyPhotoTips.com www.ThePhotographyPodcast.com

In this video i show you the steps from taking the photos that will be used in a composite image. A composite image is one that is made up of a couple of photos or parts of photos. In this tutorial i have made a composite of 3 photos of myself that i edit into a single final image. The camera i use is not important nor is the lens. I uploaded the photos onto my computer via adobe lightroom 2 and then edited the images via the free software which is very much like adobe lightroom called GIMP (version: 2.6) from there i use tools like the lasoo tool and the layer mask. hope this helps and you get some creative ideas from it. If you enjoy my videos please post them on your Facebook page and let others know about this channel, please subscribe and share on Facebook and twitter. Also check out the links below. Weekly Photo Tips review of the Westcott 43″ Apollo Orb

07 Nov

You have heard us talk about the Westcott 28″ Apollo Speedlight softbox, and now it has a big brother, the Westcott 43″ Apollo Orb. And much like the smaller 28″ softbox, the new 43″ Apollo Orb shares many of the same features: 1. They are made to be used with Speedlights (or for you Canon shooters – Speedlites) 2. They are made on umbrella frames so they open and close quickly, easily, and are extremely portable 3. It’s 43 inches gives you an even bigger light and can easily accommodate multiple flash heads 4. You can rotate the flash inside the softbox 5. The front panel is recessed for greater (feathering) control of the light and something the little brother does not have: 6. You can purchase a 40-Degree grid accessory to further increase your lighting options

My Favorite Gear: Weekly Photography Challenge

03 Nov

Kodak Brownie Starlet, 1957 - my first cameraThis week your photographic challenge is a little different to normal – we’d like you to photograph your favourite piece of photographic gear and to share a few words on why you like it.

In some ways it is a little less of a ‘photographic technique’ challenge and more an opportunity to see the gear that the dPS community loves the most (and photographing products is a good challenge too).

Feel free to share a photo of your camera, a lens, a lighting accessory, a camera bag or any other photographic gear or accessory that you can’t envisage your photography without. It could be new or old gear, you can shoot it in any situation (including with you in the shot as a self portrait) – it is totally up to you!

Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘favourite gear’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using our embed tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSGEARILOVE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – Incomplete challenge where there were some great shots submitted.
