In Motion: Weekly Photography Challenge

21 Sep

This week your photographic challenge is to take and share an image on the theme of ‘In Motion’.

This gives you a great opportunity to practice a range of photographic techniques (like panning, zooming, slow sync flash) in a variety of settings – after all there’s ‘motion’ everywhere around us.

Before you head off to shoot your image – here are a few posts from our archives that might help with capturing some motion shots:

  • How to capture motion blur
  • 13 places to practice taking motion blur shots
  • A beginners guide to capturing motion in your photography

Once you’ve taken your ‘In Motion’ shots, upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our comments tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSINMOTION to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Available Light Portraits challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

Speedlight Lit Portraits: Weekly Photography Challenge

14 Sep

This week we’re continuing our themed challenges in the Portraits Direction to celebrate the launch of our Portraits: Lighting the Shot eBook by pursuing the theme ‘Speedlight Lit Portraits’.

Answer Me

So your challenge is to shoot and share a portrait image that is lit using a speed light flash (or more than one if you want to go that direction). While this might limit participation by some Speedlights are the most common type of lighting among our readers so hopefully it’s accessible to a lot of you.

Gina covers a lot of techniques that will be useful for you on this front in her eBook but whether you’ve got it or not we’d love to see your attempts shared in comments below!

Once you’ve taken your ‘Available Light’ photos, upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our comments tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSSPEEDLIGHT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Available Light Portraits challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

Available Light Portraits: Weekly Photography Challenge

07 Sep

This week we are celebrating the launch of our brand new Portrait Lighting eBook so I thought it might be fun to have a portraiture themed weekly challenge.

Bus People

Your challenge is to take and share a portrait image that only uses the available light in the setting where you’re shooting.

Giada

So if you’re outside during the day – shoot only using natural light. If you’re inside, only use the light in the room (window light, the normal artificial lights in the room etc).

golden light

So – you can use artificial light but no your speed light or any studio lights – just what is there in the setting you’re shooting in. I hope that makes sense!

Once you’ve taken your ‘Available Light’ photos, upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our comments tool to do so.

Soft Light: Weekly Photography Challenge

31 Aug

NewImageYour challenge this week is to take and share a photo on the theme of ‘Soft Light’.

Earlier in the week Andrew Gibson wrote a post on the topic of using Soft Light in a variety of types of photos to create a magic feel in your images.

Using soft light is a technique that can be used in many types of photography including portraiture, landscapes, macro and much more so you can submit any type of photo – as long as it was taking in soft light.

Note: also check out our article this week on taking natural light portraits in the shade which will also produce ‘softer’ lit portraits even on a bright day.

Once you’ve taken your ‘Soft Light’ photos, upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSSOFTLIGHT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Negative Space challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

This week we explored the idea of Negative Space in composing images so now it is time to put that into practice with our weekly photographic challenge.

NewImage

Your challenge is to take and share an image that uses Negative Space well.

NewImage

You can do this by taking a photo of any genre, portraits, macro, street or landscape… anything you like.

NewImage

If you’d like another tutorial on Negative Space check this one out too.

NewImage

Once you’ve taken your ’2nd Point of Interest’ photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

Secondary Point of Interest: Weekly Photography Challenge

17 Aug

Earlier this week we published a post on composition of images in which author Matt Dutile introduced the concept of adding a second point of interest to your photos to give your image a natural viewing progression.

Adding a secondary point of interest can not only add more interest in your image but reinforce a theme or perspective argues Matt.

NewImage

A number of people commented that they’d not considered this technique before so we thought this might be a fun weekly challenge – taking photos that not only have a single point of interest – but which have a second one.

Check out Matt’s post and then head out with your camera to practice the technique.

Once you’ve taken your ’2nd Point of Interest’ photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPS2NDINTEREST to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Black and White Landscapes: Weekly Photography Challenge

10 Aug

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been running ‘Landscapes’ challenges to celebrate the launch of our new Landscape Photography eBook – this week we’re going to continue that by nominating ‘Black and White Landscapes’ as the theme for your challenge.

Black & White

Once again – there’s a section on black and white landscapes in the eBook (see the screen shot of the first page of the section below) but whether you’ve read it or not – we think it’s a fun challenge because many photographers don’t think to take landscapes with out colour – to their own detriment.

Don’t believe us – check out these 27 great Black and White Landscapes for some inspiration.

So grab your camera and head out and shoot some landscapes in black and white. If you’re not able to get out – how about finding an older landscape to convert?

Once you’ve taken your ‘Black and White Landscape’ photos upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSBWLANDSCAPES to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks Leading Lines challenge – there were some great shots submitted.

Water Landscapes: Weekly Photography Challenge

03 Aug

Last week’s sunset/sunrise landscapes challenge was really popular with some beautiful images being submitted so we’re going to continue the ‘landscape’ theme going (to coincide with the launch of our Living Landscapes eBook) and this week are issuing the challenge of photographing a landscape image with ‘water’ in the scene.

So this week we’d love to see some shots with rivers, lakes, oceans, streams and waterfalls (or anything else you can imagine up).
