25 Images Using Framing in Composition – Weekly Inspiration

Framing in composition

This week I want to showcase some images that use framing in composition to create a successful image. It is one of the most difficult elements to master, but one of the most important in terms of create depth in your images. In a nutshell this is what frame is all about:

  • adding a foreground object into your scene that frames, or helps highlight your subject
  • sometimes involve stepping back from your original composition and looking for elements to use as a frame
  • usually using a shallow depth of field to put the foreground, framing element out of focus
  • the frame is there to set the scene, and draw the viewer into the image

Enjoy!

Using Framing in Composition – Weekly Photography Challenge

30 Nov

Framing is exactly as it implies:  seeing your image through something that frames it such as:  a doorway, a window, through leaves of a tree, etc.

Shot at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. To me the people in the foreground help tell the story.

Framing your subject within a another is a strong, graphical composition. It adds a three dimensional quality to your images, and creates depth. Using framing adds a foreground element that can help set the scene, tell the story, and lead the viewer’s eye into the image.

Start looking for ways to shoot through natural frames to highlight your subject.

HINT: back up and look through the doorway behind you.  Show the viewer exactly where to look.

To frame this Japanese temple in Hawaii I walked away from it until I had this overhanging tree to frame the image. It adds depth and dimension to your images when you use this technique.

Weather – Weekly Photography Challenge

24 Nov

This week your photography challenge is to capture the weather, good or bad!  Too many photographers pack up their gear when the weather turn inclement but some of the most spectacular images can be had in less than ideal conditions.

weather-photography-challenge-02

I noticed this big thundercloud rolling over the prairies from a shopping mall parking lot. I used the sign in the shot and capture the streaming rays of the last of the sun.

Keep in mind weather is ALL kinds of conditions including a lovely sunny day, or a bitter cold winter frost. So wherever you live in the world you do have some kind of weather. Give yourself a challenge to show it and use it to your best advantage and share your images.

Don’t be afraid to get out and get dirty, just make sure your gear stays dry!

This is a closer version of the same storm, minutes later. The sun just hitting the horizon made for dramatic lighting. The lighting that happened 10 minutes later was also pretty dramatic! People were shooting this with their ipads in the parking lot out their car windows.

The thing with storms and crazy weather is you have to be ready. I had  my camera and tripod in the car with me so was able to capture these images. “They” say (they say a lot don’t they?) that the best camera is the one you have with you. So even if it’s your Smart phone, grab some shots. Better yet carry your camera with you, always, and be ready.

Once you’ve taken your ‘weather’ shots we’d love to see them in comments below. Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section as pictured below) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSWEATHER to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last week’s  Show us your Gear challenge – there were some fantastic shots, many self portraits, submitted.

Happy shooting and have a great weekend!

Cheers,

Backlight: Weekly Photography Challenge

28 Sep

The Stories

This week we explored the technique of back lighting subjects in a blog post so thought it might make a good challenge topic.

Paris Saint Germain

Backlighting is something that can add impact to many types of photography – portraits, landscapes, wildlife etc and it can be done with both natural and artificial light – so you should have lots of scope to take some great shots this week.

There's a light that never goes out

Once you’ve taken your ‘Back Lighting’ shots, upload your best ones to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our comments tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSBACKLIGHT to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.
