Weekly Photography Challenge – Circles

28 Nov

Do you see circles everywhere?

The world itself is a circle, they naturally occur in nature, and man-made objects are full of them.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Circles

Your assignment for the weekly challenge is to actively look for them and photograph circles. When you train your focus, attention and eye on one thing you will see more of them than ever before.

Take a photo walk and see how many circles you can photograph!

Weekly Photography Challenge – Wind

21 Nov

Earlier I shared a set of images that represent wind here.

Garry Knight

By Garry Knight

It is one of those tricky concepts or subjects to photograph because it’s sort of invisible. So what can you do to capture an image of it? How about these ideas:

  • Sailing or sailboats
  • Kites
  • Trees, flowers or grass blowing in the wind
  • Flags
  • Clouds moving quickly across the sky
  • Windmills or turbines
  • A person’s hair blowing off or across their face
  • Weathervanes

Weekly Photography Challenge – Wind

Your challenge this week is to go and photograph something that shows the viewer it is windy. Use your imagination and get creative with it.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Water

If you haven’t participated in the weekly themed challenge before, using the excuse, “I don’t live near that” – you can’t use that reason this time. You can literally find some water anywhere you live. Turn on the tap, find a river or stream, or even a fountain in the middle of your city will work. But do take on this challenge and go photography some water. Here are some ideas:

  • Ocean
  • Lake
  • Pond
  • Swimming pool
  • Puddle
  • Tap water
  • Dew on a flower or spider web
  • A glass of water
  • Running water like a river or stream
  • A waterfall
  • Even ice is water
  • A fountain
  • A splash
  • Water drops in mid-air

Get creative!

Weekly Photography Challenge – Light Trails

31 Oct

This week since it is the week of goblins and ghouls and spooky things, let’s do some photography in the dark! You can check out these image of light trails to get some ideas.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Light trails

Light trails is about long exposures in the dark, capturing something that is illuminated and moving. The result is a trail of light through your image, without seeing the original subject.

Nicolas Michaud

By nicolas michaud

That could be cars moving along a darkened city street, sparklers, a flashlight, or anything that lights up. You could even get creative and try moving the camera to create light trails from a stationary object.

Here are some articles to help you out:

Your job this week to go shoot some scary stuff. Make us quiver in our boots, cry like babies, scream like a little girl.

Maybe you can find a creepy ghost town and do a shoot at night. Or get your kids to help you with some light painting and make some spooky patterns. Set up a jack-o-lantern, or do some funky make-up, get creative with it.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Negative Space

17 Oct

Composition is one of the keys to creating a strong and effective image. One compositional element you can use is negative space. Basically simplification to the highest level, and making the subject isolated with lots of empty space around it. Here are a few examples.

I tell my students all the time – get closer, simplify!

David

Weekly photography challenge – negative space

Often I see new photographers trying to cram too much stuff into their images, and they just end up being confusing, and ineffective. By simplifying and removing everything except the subject the viewer has no choice but to see it. Taking it a step farther and composing so as to have space around the subject, room for it to move or breathe, allows the image to take on a feeling.

Negative space can add a feeling of loneliness, solitude, quiet, peace, serenity, or even movement. What do these say:

If you are like me and live in the northern hemisphere it shouldn’t be too hard to find some yellow in all the fall colors. The trick is to make an image using it that works, isn’t overpowered by the bold color and still grabs the viewer’s attention.

Using complementary colors to add contrast can help like these:
