Weekly Photography Challenge – The Dinner Table

20 Feb

Photos of food, when done well, serve to make the viewer hungry or at the very least make the food in the photo look appetizing. Often food is photographed right at the table.

Weekly Photography Challenge – The Dinner Table

Your goal for the photography challenge this week is to photograph some food. It could be your meal, or like this image of mine I shared previously, someone else’s that looked appealing.

This is actually my photo taken of someone else's sandwich in Trinidad, Cuba. It just looked so amazing!

Interpret the theme – the dinner table – however you want. It could be even just the table and place setting, maybe a candle or two, or an entire spread of food. Include people eating and enjoying the food, or for scale and perspective. Get close up on one item, or shoot the whole plate. The choice is yours.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Time

14 Feb

Time – it just keeps on ticking and there’s nothing we can do about it.

Except maybe try and capture the concept of time in an image – like these images I shared earlier.

Niko Knigge

By Niko Knigge

The hands of time can be taken quite literally, as in the image above – or more figuratively such as the images below:

Weekly Photography Challenge – Time

As always we have a weekly challenge and this week it all about time. Finding time, time warp, hands of time – however you want to interpret it is up to you. Take it literally and photograph a time piece like an interesting watch or clock, or perhaps a sundial like above. Or get more out there and think about time as in long exposures, star trails, car light trails, a moment frozen in time, etc.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Warm Fuzzies

06 Feb

Earlier today I shared a collection of images that represent cuddly.

A good hug, a snuggly puppy or kitten, a father with his newborn son – all things that give us warm fuzzies inside.

Wei-Hang Chua

Weekly photography challenge – warm fuzzies

So your challenge this week is, you guessed it, photograph something that either is warm and fuzzy, or gives you that feeling. So that could be many different things:

  • Your bedroom slippers
  • A favorite sweater
  • A pet
  • Parent and baby
  • Kids hugging
  • Someone doing a good deed

You get the idea.

Weekly photography challenge – something shiny

What can you see near you that’s shiny? Look around, what do you see:

  • A crystal
  • Chrome
  • A watch
  • Jewelry
  • The sun

Your job this week is to photograph something shiny, and make it stand out. Make sure it glistens and sparkles in your image. Lighting is key.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Big and Heavy

23 Jan

Previously I shared 26 solid images of heavy items done by other photographers. Things like:

  • trains
  • planes
  • automobiles
  • machines
  • large animals
  • things made of steel and metal
  • heavy metal bands if you want to stretch the meaning

You get the idea. We know this thing is heavy! On the arms and the pocketbook!

Nathan Rupert

Weekly Photography Challenge – Heavy

I’ve given you some ideas below but put your own spin on interpreting this one. It could even be heavy hearted, a footprint impression in the sand, you name it. Just go out with the idea of finding something to represents the them of heavy and photograph it in its best light, composition, and make it stand out.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Lightweight

16 Jan

Each week we try and come up with something interesting and different for the weekly photography challenge here on dPS. The images I shared earlier of: 25 Floaty Images of Lightweight Objects might give you a hint! If you haven’t already seen them, take a look.

U.S. Army

By U.S. Army

Weekly Photography Challenge – Lightweight

You could take the term literally, like the image above of lightweight boxers, or figuratively – the choice is yours. Get creative. What things around your own home could be considered lightweight? Something soft and fluffy like a kitten, a tissue, or a feather – or perhaps something even lighter like puffy clouds on a nice day, or marshmallows.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Panoramic Photos

Weekly Photography Challenge – Panoramic Photos

If you have never done a panoramic photo now it your chance to try it. The simplest way to create one is to just crop a regular image into one that is really long and narrow. Make sure the subject fits the format and you aren’t cutting off anything important to the composition.

The other, more complex way to make a pano is to shoot a series of images and stitch them together, usually using Photoshop. We have a few articles here on dPS on how to do that if you need some tips:

  • How to do Landscape Panoramic Photography
  • How to Shoot Panoramic Photos
  • Getting Started in Panoramic Photography (beginner)
  • Step By Step How to Make Panoramic HDR Images (advanced)
  • HDR Vertorama Photography – How to Create Mind-bending Images (advanced)
  • Step by Step Using Merge to Panorama in Lightroom (beginner)

Weekly Photography Challenge – Holiday Lights

19 Dec
Tracy Sigler

By Tracy Sigler

Photography of lights at night can be fun. There are many things you do and techniques to enhance photos of lights:

  • Shoot at an aperture of f/11 or smaller to make star points on the light sources
  • Use long exposures to shoot light trails
  • Use a zoom technique to create a unique effect
  • Or just shoot them straight up at night

Weekly Photography Challenge – Holiday Lights

Your job this week is to photograph some lights. If there are no decorations near where you live try some car trails, or street lights. Just try some shooting in the dark, or a new technique you haven’t tried before.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Kids

05 Dec

Kids! Gotta love them. I don’t have any myself but I enjoy being around them, and taking in their energy and freedom they exhibit. They say what’s on their mind and aren’t afraid of what other people think when they dance, sing, do art, etc. We adults can learn a lot from them.
