Weekly Photography Challenge – Urban Decay

30 Apr

If you live in a city now is your chance to get out and hunt for some run down, dilapidated, crumbling buildings that say urban decay to you.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Urban Decay

You can handle this challenge and subject however you wish to approach it. Shoot or convert to black and white, try some HDR, how about doing some light painting at night? The choice is yours. Go find a good subject, take a friend along too, and shoot away!

NOTE: As always though – please put your safety and taking the proper precautions to ensure you aren’t trespassing on private property or endangering yourself or anyone else in the process of getting your photos. Safety and getting proper permissions come first!

Weekly Photography Challenge – City Skyline

16 Apr

Whether you live in a big metropolis or a small town, your urban center will have a skyline of some kind. The outline of the buildings that make up the main part of town make up the skyline.

Weekly Photography Challenge – City Skyline

You can see 25 more example of city skyline photos here.

If you browse online for skyline photos you may notice a common thread among the images – many of them are shot at dusk, or at night. That’s because cities look great just as daylight is fading away and the lights of the city illuminate. It’s the magic of blue hour.

You get to decide how you want to tackle this week’s challenge and shoot your city’s skyline. Maybe go out a few different times during the day and see how the light changes.

If it’s a city near a body of water, try and capture a reflection of the lights at night. Or make your own reflection by finding a large rain puddle and a low camera angle.

If you live in a city that’s been photographed a million times like NYC or San Francisco, try something different like:

  • Shoot with a fish-eye lens
  • Convert to black and white
  • Shoot straight up and get just building tops
  • Put something in front to frame the city with

Weekly Photography Challenge – Panning

09 Apr

If you want to see action and motion, check out these 30 moving panning images.

Panning is the technique of moving your camera to match the direction and speed of an object that is moving in front of you, while shooting at a slow shutter speed. The result will blur the background, and make the subject relatively sharp. The trick is to get your speed and timing just right – it takes a bit of practice so now is a good time to do just that!

Weekly Photography Challenge – The Light of Dawn

02 Apr

This set of images of dawn shared earlier are great examples of using the magic light of dawn to take stunning images.

Susanne Nilsson

By Susanne Nilsson

Weekly Photography Challenge – the light of dawn

Your challenge this week is to get up early , get out of your comfy bed, and photograph with the first light of the day, dawn. Sunrise photography can be tricky as you’re usually heading out in the dark. So you may need to plan ahead and scout some locations and shots the night or day before.

Get there early so you can capture the first light – it’s magical. Landscapes are the obvious choice for this challenge, but there are so many other subjects you can work with – so think outside the box a little. What about some macro photography? A blade of grass with morning dew, for example. Go urban and hit the city streets to see how the light plays off the buildings and early risers heading to work. There are a ton of possibilities.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Round and Round

12 Mar

Each week here on dPS we give you a new challenge, something to sink your teeth into and go out and photograph. Last week it was Modes of Transportation and I see many of you have participated in that one.

If you’re following along, this week we have a new one, and I shared some examples to wet your appetite already for shooting circles.

We humans have many ways of getting ourselves from point A to point B, methods of transportation, or vehicles, such as:

  • Planes
  • Trains
  • Car/automobiles
  • Bus
  • Bicycle
  • Motorcycle
  • Boat
  • Scooter
  • Sailboat
  • Cruise ship
  • Skateboard

That leaves it pretty wide opened for you this week. You could shoot traffic on a busy street, try some panning, freeze or stop the motion by choosing the appropriate shutter speed, take a bus or train and shoot from inside, just for a few ideas.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Square

Weekly Photography Challenge – Square

There are many ways you could choose to approach this week’s challenge. You could take it literally and photograph:

  • Things which are square shaped
  • Images cropped into a square format
  • Patterns that include squares

Or you could take it a bit more off-beat and go for:

  • Squares as in city parks or plazas, and things that take place there
  • A person or thing which is a bit odd as in the old hippy phrase “He’s a square”
  • Something that happens directly, or shooting square on to the subject
